This issue has come to you amidst an auspicious occasion of Bada Dashain, the biggest Nepali festival in and literally translated as "ten days of celebration". It is believed that Goddess Durga defeated a demon king “Mahisasur” in a fierce battle which lasted nine consecutive nights referred to as Nawaratri”. The day of victory, the tenth, is hence known as “Vijaya Dashami”, and is the main day of this festival. While colourful kites in the sky and Nepali swing called “ping” hint on its arrival, crowded markets and busy streets justify its significance. Dashain is not only limited to pilgrimage to various temples over the period. Nor is it only limited to a symbol of victory of virtue over vice, good over evil or light over darkness. It is an insignia of togetherness when family members get together to receive blessings in the form of Tika, (rice mixed with vermilion powder) and Jamara (sprout of barley or corn planted on virgin soil contained in a holy water vessel), from their elders. Widely celebrated by all in Nepal, it is also a right occasion to wish near and dear ones with the very best. Far away from our native homes and from family members, we have gathered to replicate the significance of this grand festival. Editorial on Dashain It is an honour for Nepalese Canadian Association of Ottawa to bring you the seventh issue of its biannual newsletter "Ottawa Chautari". This issue has come to you amidst an auspicious occasion of Bada Dashain, the biggest Nepali festival in and literally translated as "ten days of celebration". NCAO Activities Third Annual General Meeting & Nepali New Year Celebration The Third Annual General Meeting (AGM) of NCAO was held on April 17, 2004 and was attended by over a hundred members. An open discussion session was organized to generate views and ideas for the betterment of the association. Sixth issue of NCAO’s biannual newsletter “Ottawa Chautari” was also released on this occasion along with the presentation of annual financial report. A fifteen-member executive board was elected and the portfolios were distributed later in the first board meeting of the newly elected board members held on April 28, 2004 as follows.

Nepali dance by Adarsha Mehta and her team along with music by Philemon Rai, Rajendra Rana and Robin Subba stole the show. Ray Folkins resigned weeks later and Puspalata Rai also submitted her resignation recently due to their personal commitments. This occasion, which also coincided with the Nepali New Year 2061, was celebrated by the community with a variety of food and cuisines prepared by Nepalese families. NCAO’s New Bank NCAO bank accounts were transferred to CIBC. Nepali Language School Established in 2002 with an aim of promoting Nepali language, this school has had a very fruitful year so far. With over twenty students registered, another class was added and currently there are two classes running simultaneously on Saturday mornings from 9 to 11:30 am.

School Students and Volunteers with Teachers

During this school year, quiz contests were also organized. There was also active participation from our students in a drawing competition organized by Spanish classes. Saugat Ghimire came second in the contest. Upon requests from majority of parents, it was decided to move the school to D. Roy Kennedy Public School at 919 Woodroffe Avenue. Admission is possible during any time of the school with registration fee of $10 for Ontario residents. Following the end of contract of Geeta Dhakal Upreti as a schoolteacher, fresh applications were called for. The committees formed for the selection of new teachers unanimously selected Anita Shrestha and Suren Upreti.

Tulip Outing It was the first event organized by the new executive board on May 17. About thirty people including children enjoyed the blooming tulips that created a colourful atmosphere around Dows Lake. Supported by a pleasant weather and crowded with people trying to capture the beautiful flowery scenery, the day-long outing was most enjoyed by children who also got free balloons from one of the sponsors.

Visit to the Museum of Nature Some families took an opportunity to visit Museum of Nature on Saturday, June 12. Since most families were out of town, the turnout was not as expected. Of many interests of life sciences, a documentary shown on octopus was informative. Survey and Proposal NCAO also participated in Ottawa Mosaic’s asset mapping survey meant to identify the assets of the various community organizations in Ottawa. In an attempt to get funds, a grant proposal was sent to “Arts Presentation Canada – Fresh Start Grant” for a possible funding of Dashain Cultural Program. NCAO has not heard of the decision as of yet.

Summer Picnic On July 10, NCAO organized an annual outdoor summer picnic at Andrew Haydon Park. Over 125 members and guests participated in the potluck with joy and enthusiasm. There was plenty of specially prepared food to satisfy every palate. While tent-setup for the Food Drive caught eyes of any passer-by, delicious food brought by participants and the barbeque kept all mouths watering throughout the day. It turned out to be a perfect occasion for ladies to color their hands with the various designs of Mehndi (Henna). While children exclusively enjoyed the thrill of spoon-marble race, Tim bits hunt, find the coin, “Haandi Phod” (break a clay pot), tug-of-war, volleyball, and soccer were enjoyed by all with equal zeal. In tug-of-war between the East and the West sides of Ottawa, East side clearly dominated the game.

Food Drive for the Ottawa Food Bank

The Second NCAO Food Drive was successfully organized on the

same day and venue as annual summer picnic. This was an excellent opportunity for the participants to contribute to a good cause while enjoying the family event in a beautiful outdoor setting. There was plenty of specially prepared food to satisfy every palate. With support and generosity of NCAO members and picnic participants, NCAO collected approximately 350 pounds of food for the Ottawa Food Bank. The collection of non-perishable food was twice as much collected last year. Beside the non-perishable food, the NCAO also collected a total of $240 from its 50/50 draw. Fifty percent of the collected money was distributed among the four winners of the draw and the remaining 50% ($120) was donated to the Food Bank. Overwhelming support and feedback received from members and other organizations were highly encouraging. The success of this event combined was another example of cooperation and harmony in the community. With such joint efforts, we can make NCAO food drive an outstanding community and charitable event. It can also serve as a source of inspiration and pride for all of us.

Summer Sports Day On a beautiful sunny afternoon of July 24, finest athletes of our community took over the fields of

Mother Teresa High School to showcase their athletic skills. Soccer match kicked off with younger folks on one side and elders on the other. Eye-catching moments of the match were parents competing with their children while the latter clearly dominated the entire play. Volleyball match among adults followed the soccer match. Condolence Meet Following the brutal killing of twelve innocent Nepalese in Iraq by the militants of the Army of Ansar al-Sunna, NCAO organized a mourning meet on Saturday, September 4. About twenty-five members of the community including John P. Melville of OCISO attended the meeting. One minute of silence was observed and condolence message collected was sent to Royal Nepalese Embassy in Washington DC. Press releases were then emailed to Ottawa Citizen, Nepalnews, Kantipur Publications and Nepal Samacharpatra. Volunteers for Child Haven Rasna Sherchan and Samikshya Rai performed excellent Nepali dances in a fund raising event organized by Child Haven at Perth on October 2. On this occasion our community members Chiju Gautam, Lata Karki, Mira Singh, Radha Basnyat, Shiva Ghimire and Tara Upreti also provided volunteer services at the event. Upgrading of NCAO Web Site Effective milestones were achieved in making NCAO website www.nepalese.ca more attractive, more member-oriented and more interactive. Databases and automated mailing lists were added to the existing ones resulting in eye-catching NCAO announcements, members’ corner to bring up member related news, showcase for members to submit pictures of their choice, moderated forum for discussions, calendar to remember important days and notifications of users online at a given time. Complements have come from different parts of the world including Nepal.

Ojeshwi Pandey came to Ottawa to join an undergraduate program in Public Affairs and Policy Management at Carleton University. Sudikshya Acharya came to Ottawa to join an undergraduate program in Integrated Sciences. Send us information about new arrivals, departures, newly born and graduation, in our community.

Farewell Bhadreshwor Upadhyaya who lived in Ottawa for about a year went back to Nepal with his wife Laxmi Upathaya. Graduation The following youths from Nepali community graduated from their schools this year: Aditya Bhandari graduated from Aurora High School, Aurora, Ontario and joined York University this year. Kristina Shrestha graduated from McCrae High School and is now doing Honours in International Development at University of Ottawa. Reecha Nepal graduated from Mother Teresa High School and is now doing Honours in Biopharmaceuticals at University of Ottawa. Stuti Bhandari graduated from Aurora High School, Aurora, Ontario and is now studying Life Sciences at University of Toronto, St. George Campus. Lava and Kusha are twins. They are in the third grade. Friday the class will vote for the class president. “Who will you vote for?” Lava asks Kusha.

“Myself. I want to be the president.” Kusha tells everyone, “Vote for me as the president.” Bossy Kusha tells Lava, “I want you to help me. Go get some cookies and pass them out. Say they are from me. Also I want to help everyone with his or her homework and tell them it was my idea.” Lava doesn’t like being bossed around but she does love her sister. So she bakes cookies and hands them out to the class. The class likes the cookies so much Kusha asks Lave to bring them every day. During recess and after school Lava helps other students with their homework. It bothers Lava that Kusha is so bossy but Lava keeps working hard for his sister. Lava works so hard that she almost falls asleep in class. Kusha doesn’t do any work. She only sits on the swing talking and laughing and eating the cookies that Lava made. Meanwhile, Lava works hard to make Kusha the class president. Finally, it is Friday. The teacher says, “It is time for the class to vote.” Everyone waits to see who gets most votes. The teacher says, “The class president is..... Lava!” Lava wins because the class thinks he is a kind person and a hard worker. My Dance Experience Patricia Rana

Well, it all started when my mom was watching a Russian program on Mix TV and there was a commercial for the “Matryoshka” (Russian Festival 2004) “Be A Star Mini Look-A-Like” Contest. So when it was done my mom told me, “Patricia you are going to participate in the contest and you are going to work hard to win the first prize.” So I said, “Ok, but I want to dance to an Indian song.” Then my mom called the organizer of the show and said that she would like to register me. They said ok, and asked for my name, the kind of dance

I was going to perform, my age, where I lived and my phone number. For the next few days I was going through the DVDs we had and thinking of which song I should dance on. Then my mom and dad finally decided that I dance the way one of those Bollywood stars Aishwarya Rai does in her movies. But the question was which one? So one night my mom and dad went through the DVDs my dad had bought from Nepal titled “Blue Eyes Aishwarya Rai”. The dance we thought would be nice was “Dayya Dayya Dayya Re”. It was unique, not too hard and above all it was a good song and a great dance. The problem was which costume should I wear? As you know in Indian dances they change clothes every time it’s a new scene. It had to be an Indian costume. My dad told me that he would arrange a “Lehnga” (a typical Indian dress) and some sets of bangles. The Lehnga that was chosen was a torques coloured one, which was pretty heavy at first, because it had a lot of designs and embroidery.

Now, to get to Toronto was another story. My mom and I had to ask my dad over and over again, until one fateful day he said he would take me there. Once we were in Toronto I

practised at least five times a day. According to the contest requirement I had to wear a dress similar to Aishwarya Rai’s and look like her and dance like she does. I took a five-day course with choreographer to make my dance better and worked on my eyes. We hired a professional beautician to do my make-up. She put so much make-up on me that I could not even recognize myself. Then the most wonderful day of my life came. It was the day I was going to perform on a big stage packed with thousands of audience. There were fifteen finalists and I was the sixth one to perform. My mom was so nervous and she wasn’t even the

one who was performing. Unlike my mom I wasn’t nervous, instead I was excited! Five persons who were performing ahead of me had gone, and it was now my turn. My name was called, and I went onto the stage - confident, excited and happy. After it was all done and they were announcing the winner, that’s when I started to feel nervous. They were announcing the contestants that won the prizes from the sponsors. Almost everyone was getting a prize or two. Finally they announced the participants who won the third and second place. When they were announcing the winner my mom was like, “And... and….” It was the most intense moment of all. And they finally shouted out, “Patricia Rana dancing Aishwarya Rai!” My mom was so happy and my dad was shocked. My baby sister Beatrice Rana told my mom, “She won because I had my fingers crossed!” And my mom laughed her head off! Along with two trophies, I received $1000 and a gift certificate good for two hundred dollars for Barkley Optical. And that was how I won the first prize for “Matryoshka 2004 Be a Star Mini Look-A-Like Contest”. When we got back from Toronto I was asked to do an interview on Chin Radio 97.9 Ottawa FM about my performance. I was also in the Russian newspaper “Nasha Gajeta” twice - once where they were showing the finalists and the other time on the front page. Apart from that I was also on TV. A Trip to Manokamana Temple Kanchan Gautam

On 30th June 2004 (Asar 16th 2061), I woke up early at around 5am, as I was conscious about our plan on that day to visit Manokamana temple in Gorkha district. After a cup of tea, Shuva, Anil and I headed off to the bus stop. The bus after three and half hours drive from Kathmandu dropped us off to the entrance of the Manokamana cable car station Kurintar. It was an exciting trip to leave a crowded and smoke-rich air of Kathmandu and arrive to a quiet and nature-rich environment of Kurintar. The road ascending to Nagdhunga, descending to Naubise, and then along the side of Mahadev Khola upto Galchhi and then along Trishuli river was really memorable. We met Bikram (motor-biked from Kalyanpur Chitawan), Basanta and Shital (both came by bus from Sepako-bagaincha, Tanahu). It was not sure until we all met that whether all of would be able to arrive here as the road condition from Narayangadh was not reliable and the trip from Sepako-bagaincha was equally undependable due to the flood situation in Chundi Khola. All of us arrived on time from three directions after crushing all hurdles, signalling good start of the day. We went to ticket counter and bought the tickets. Return fare for the students was Rupees 600. I forgot to take my student card, moreover, I had not thought they will consider the student card from overseas and I had not bothered to carry this card with me. They charged me full price while Basanta got student price showing his student card from UK. We got to Manokamana Temple by cable car in less than fifteen minutes time whereas (according to my parents) my previous trip (when I was few months old) had taken more than three hours tough walking to get to the wish fulfilling goddess. The cable car has reduced the time to reach the destination of the advocates of the goddess Bhagwati, drastically increasing the number of tourist for past five years. The ride in a cable car from Kuringhat was spectacular one out looking Trishuli River and couple of ridges. The water in the river sparkled with the reflection from the sunlight.

Once we got off the cable car on the top of the hill, we followed a track that led us to Manokamana Temple. On our way to Manokamana Temple, we bought two male goats as we had a plan to sacrifice them to goddess Bhagwati by keeping our promises in a hope to get good luck. There was no time of boredom as we walked to the Manokamana Temple as we encountered people who welcomed us to their hotel afterwards for lunch in most friendly manner. After we finished worshipping in the temple, we headed to one of the restaurant in the village. I was really surprised with the amount of fascinating restaurant as we walk down to the track leading to the cable car station. We had our lunch in one of the restaurant that had shed with little umbrella on the top of each table. We had nice daal (lentils), bhat (rice) and goat meat that we sacrificed a part of it to the god. We headed to cable car station to get down to where we came from at first. As we walked by, we came across lots of little shops that sold lots of souvenir of Mankamana temple. We bought some souvenir at a good price. The temple “Manokamana” is situated in the top of the hill with the height of about 1300 m above sea level. The deity in the temple is of Hindu Goddess Bhagwati who is believed to fulfill the wishes of the pilgrims who come-by to worship there. Manokamana seems to be a great place especially for trekkers. If you want, you can return by walking down the former well-used track down from hilltop ridge through forest and paddy to its exit on the Gorkha road, just 1 km north of the town of Abu Khareini. We got into the cable car and down we went to the cable station on Kuringhat in the highway. It was nice scenic ride again with incredibly natural view. We could see the Gorkha district right down us from the cable car. I would recommend anyone to go there and enjoy not only riding the cable car but mostly the greenery view that is observable through cable car. I was very much amazed with the facility and everything of the cable car. I was really impressed with the person who actually implemented the impeccable idea of inventing

such cable car in such a remote place where it was almost impossible to reach even after two hours of tough walking. It was perfect day to travel. The wind experienced from the window was cool enough to make us awake despite our sleepiness. We could hear some sounds made by water from the waterfall on our way back. On our way back to Kathmandu, all the buses heading towards Kathmandu were jammed up due to the security check at the Thankot. Shuva suggested that it would be quicker for us if we walk up one hill to get to Thankot than sitting in the bus and waiting for it to be checked by security personnel. Thankot was just one hill walk above us. So, we decided to walk one hill, as it would be one kind of exercise. Finally, we walked up to Thankot. We were completely exhausted when we got to the top of the hill but it was indeed a great experience. We stopped into a dairy to buy ice cream and cold drink made out of yoghurt. We were really craving for it after a long steep hill walk. Then we took another bus from Thankot and arrived home. We had a long good night sleep after dinner. It was a really interesting and awesome day accompanying enjoying beautiful sceneries and long walk.

Teej in Ottawa: An Experience of Teej Celebration in a New Country

Chiju Gautam I attempt here to present about the Teej festival based on knowledge gained from my past followed by recent Teej-celebration experience in Ottawa. Teej: Teej, also known as Haritalika, is very important festival for Nepali women. Though the ‘Teej’ falls on the third day (Tritiya) of the moon’s waxing phase in Bhadra (August or September), Teej festival includes three parts observed a part per day for three days- Dar Khane, Teej and Rishi Panchami. We can smell Teej in the rural areas of Nepal from the day of Krishnashtami (birthday of Lord Krishna), i.e. eleven days before Teej. Women in the village assemble after evening meal and practice singing and dancing, as preparation or rehearsal for Teej. It is customary for married women and girls who have reached puberty to observe Teej ritual. Married women usually go to their parents’ house for Teej, and so it is good occasion to meet the friends from their childhood. Dar Khane is the first part of Teej, which is observed on the day before Teej. On this day the women assemble at one place in their best (mostly red) apparel and start dancing and singing devotional songs. In the evening the program goes with the extensively delicious meal that normally goes on till midnight or sometimes until before dawn. Teej, the second part of the festival, celebration starts from dawning the day after Dar Khane day, commencing 24 - hour fasting. Teej is the fasting festival for women, and some women are rigid and fast without a drop of water while others take liquid and fruit. Traditionally, it is told that goddess Parvati observed fast and prayed wishing to be the wife of Lord Shiva, and her wish was granted. Goddess Parvati, in gratitude sent her messengers to preach and disseminate this religious fasting among women, promising prosperity and longevity with their family.

Probably based on such tale, the married women observe fast and pray for their husbands’ long life and a happy conjugal life, while the unmarried women fast and pray for suitable matches. The women in red clothes and jewels gather at various places, houses, cross roads and engage themselves in merrymaking by dancing, during which they sing the songs filled with misery relating to their daily lives. Large numbers of women visit the temples of Lord Shiva, such as Pashupatinath temple in Kathmandu, and celebrate the festival in high spirits singing songs and dancing in the temple environ. Recent Teej songs also reflect the sufferings of people from different causes in the country. Rishi Panchami, the last part of Teej festival, is observed on the day after or a day after teej depending upon the lunar calendar. In the morning, women brush their teeth with 365 pieces of 'datiwan' (twigs of a plant) at rivers and ponds and take ritual baths with soil from plow-blades, kush and tulasi, and worship the Sapta Rishis (seven saints). It is believed that all unknowingly committed sins are washed away from such worship. Once the worshiping is complete, women break their fast eating gaba, rice, ghee, pickle of okra (lady’s finger) and bitter-melon , and the Teej is said to be over. Teej in Ottawa:

Dar Khane day celebration was organized in the evening of 17th September at 450 Laurier Ave West in downtown Ottawa. Over 40 people attended the programme. Women mostly in red saris sang traditional Teej song and performed dances, and CDs and Cassettes of Nepali song were very helpful for such dances. Besides dal, bhat, tarkari and achar, potluck dishes included khir, dhakani, pakoda, rasbary, barfi, pulau fragranced the hall. On the day of Teej (19th September), a special offering program was organized for Nepali women at Hindu temple in Bank Street. We gathered round 6.30 pm and a priest conducted the offering proceedings that lasted for about an hour. After the puja, we all sang Teej-songs and performed dances outside the temple. Some of the songs sang are phrased in the following: सयपऽी फलू फ योु ढकमक बार मा टपम ् यारे भगवान ्सनकोु थाल मा। सके त भगवान ् तॆ ैसवाे गर ला नसके भगवान ्शरण पर ला। तीज आयो भ छन ्सबै माइत जा छन ्हामी चले परदशमाे कसको माइत जाम॥् ूजात ऽ
