IS OTTERBEIN RIGHT FOR ME?

Choosing a college is a lot like trying something on to see how it fits.

You’ll discover as you explore your options

that this one feels TOO BIG or that one feels too far......................from a BIG CITY

And then suddenly this one—well,

this one feels just right.

Of course, you have lots of other questions

to get answered before you make a choice.

That is what this book is all about. Giving

you some of the important answers to help

you decide whether or not Otterbein might

be your perfect fit—or, at the very least,

WHAT MAKES OTTERBEIN STAND OUT?

How you learn matters and Otterbein’s curriculum is regarded as one of the BEST models in the country. Our commitment to hands-on learning experiences also ranks Otterbein among the nation’s leaders.

FROM THE EXPERTS

WHY OTTERBEIN?We think this place is incredible —and for good reason. But we thought you might want to read what some other folks have to say about it, too.

?Otterbein is more than just a

friendly, welcoming place. If you are ready to learn, to make a difference and to be accepted, recognized and

valued for who you are and what you alone have to offer...

You belong at Otterbein.

“I’ve been impressed by our Otterbein interns’ ability to think on their feet, their

level of professionalism, well-rounded educations and skill in working with a

diverse group of personalities.”NEAL O’BRIEN ’87

Investor and Co-Owner of Resolute Athletic Complex, Columbus, Ohio

A PLACE TOBELONG.

THE SMARTEST WAY TO LEARN.

“Community engagement is a way of life at Otterbein.”

“8 GREAT SCHOOLS FOR COMMUNITY SERVICE”

from HuffPost Impact (2012)

“Few institutions can recognize the kind of activism, the kind of empathy, the kind of history that Otterbein can.”

SENATOR SHERROD BROWN (D-OHIO)from 2014 Commencement address

Don’t just find a career.Find your calling—

something you believe in. Otterbein wants you to be

ready to go out into the world knowing you are

prepared to be successful.

Otterbein provides:Individual attention. A supportive campus. People who want you to succeed. All of that gives you what you need to get from where you are to where you want to be.

Otterbein students don’t just think things could be better. They do something about it. Service, volunteerism, research and community engagement— It’s about advancing the common good at Otterbein.

THE OPPORTUNITY

TO REALIZE YOUR PERSONAL BEST.

YOU WILL BE PREPARED TO LEAD A

LIFE OF PURPOSE.

THE VALUES TO SERVE THE

COMMON GOOD.

“I think the sort of integrative work you do in your general education program is often what our association says ‘we hope people will work

towards this’ and you’re already there.”CARYN MCTIGHE MUSIL

Former Senior Vice President of the Association of American Colleges and Universities on Otterbein’s

Integrative Studies curriculum

“The Honor Roll schools should be proud of their work to elevate the role of service-learning on

their campuses … I hope we’ll see more and more colleges and universities following their lead.”

EDUARDO OCHOAU.S. Department of Education’s Assistant Secretary for

Postsecondary Education on Otterbein and other schools named to the President’s Award for General Community

Service Honor Roll

from 2013 Commencement address“...a college degree is a great accomplishment. It’s

an achievement reached by less than a third of Americans. Graduating from a university with

the standards and history of Otterbein makes the achievement loftier still.”

MEG CROFTONPresident of Walt Disney Parks & Resorts Operations,

United States and France

“The people at Otterbein really care about you and are excited about helping the students. Kayla has

benefitted immensely and has absolutely blossomed. Her college experience has been so much better than I

could ever have dreamed.”ED WALSH

Parent of Otterbein freshman, Kayla Walsh, who received a spot at the Fulbright Summer Institute in London

Page 6: Otterbein University Viewbook 2014

WHY IS OTTERBEIN THE SMARTEST WAY TO LEARN??INTEGRATIVE WHAT?Some schools call it general education. But at Otterbein, our required Integrative Studies (IS) curriculum is anything but general. In fact, experts call Otterbein’s curriculum the model they hope other schools follow.

Think of it like this: The problems we face in the world—like poverty and hunger or global economic turmoil—aren’t specific to any one discipline. Solving them requires true global thinking—comprehension that crosses culture and discipline. Integrated thinking.

Learning this way—as our alumni will tell you—truly prepares you for the complexities that await you in your professions and your communities.

WHAT ARE THE FIVE GOALS OF INTEGRATIVE STUDIES?

To inspire intellectual curiosity about the world;

To assist students in cultivating intercultural knowledge;

To promote active and critical reflection on the human self and its place in the world;

To challenge students to critically examine ethical responsibilities; and

To encourage purposeful public engagement and social responsibility.

The Honors Program also gives you the opportunity to live in the Honors residence hall and participate in exclusive off-campus study experiences.

HOW DO YOU DESCRIBE THE VALUE OF EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING?From a professor:“ I have the goal of students publishing papers, students presenting at conferences and that does happen here. WILL THE FIVE CARDS PREPARE ME FOR A CAREER OR GRAD SCHOOL?In a 2012 survey of graduating seniors, students who participated in the Five Cardinal Experiences* were more likely to have a job prior to graduation or to be accepted into graduate school.

In that same survey, nearly 50% of the students surveyed reported they had finalized their plans for employment or graduate school before graduation.

*See page 25-26 for more information on the Five Cardinal Experiences.

WILL I GRADUATE ON TIME?Of all proud 2013 Otterbein Cardinal graduates, did so in FOUR years.

Otterbein is consistently in the top 20 of Master’s (Midwest) Universities in “America’s Best Colleges” by U.S. News and World Report.

Otterbein has been recognized by the White House for eight consecutive years on the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll with Distinction.* * This is one of the highest awards a school can achieve for its commitment to service-learning and civic engagement.

Otterbein has a 167-year commitment to being inclusive and is one of the nation’s leaders in co-education. Women served as faculty and were admitted as students from Otterbein’s founding in 1847 .

Otterbein was one of only six schools nationwide chosen to serve as a site for the Association of American Colleges and Universities’ project* on experiential learning. * Otterbein, Tufts and Georgetown are part of the AAC&U’s national “Bringing Theory to Practice” project.

Students are valued leaders at Otterbein where they are voting members of two critical governing bodies: the University Senate and the University Board of Trustees.

HOW WILL OTTERBEIN’S MISSION SHAPE ME AS A LEADER?Otterbein’s mission is to educate the whole person in a context that fosters the development of humane values.

What does that mean? It means Otterbein helps you become the kind of person who not only cares about making the world better—you’ll also know how to solve problems and offer innovative change to actually make it better. Some people call this being a change agent. We just call it being an Otterbein Cardinal.

WHAT ARE THE FIVE CARDINAL EXPERIENCES?

Experiential learning is hands-on. It gives you the chance to take what you’ve learned in class and put it to work in real-world situations. We believe this is an important way to learn. You can showcase your work in an e-portfolio and earn an experiential transcript to distinguish yourself as an Otterbein graduate.

WHAT ARE THREE FACTS THAT PROVE OTTERBEIN’S “COMMON BOOK” IS UNCOMMONLY GOOD? 1. Through years of experience, one of the

oldest "Common Book" programs in the nation has also grown into one of the best.

2. Students, faculty and staff choose from some 50 books each year to find a contemporary selection that welcomes new students into Otterbein’s intellectual community. (Thanks to a visionary alumna, you'll get your copy of the Common Book free of charge.)

3. Not only will you hear from the book's author in person—you’ll have a year’s worth of event and programming examining the book's themes and issues from different perspectives and through multiple disciplines.

WHAT IS BIGGER THAN EVER BUT ITS FOOTPRINT IS THE SMALLEST IT HAS EVER BEEN?The collection of resources, knowledge and information you have access to at the Courtright Memorial Library, which includes:

• More than 300,000 items in physical form

• 500 current print serial subscriptions

• More than 10,000 electronic subscriptions

• OhioLink, which gives Otterbein students full access to 89 college and university libraries and their 48 million books and scores of other library materials

(BTW, got a multi-media project due? The library loans equipment like laptops, webcams, camcorders, flip cams, digital cameras and voice recorders.)

CAN I AFFORD OTTERBEIN’S EXCELLENCE?We know it’s a big number. But this page begins to help explain how many families are able to afford Otterbein. We believe in supporting students. We invest in talent and we invest in families who need support. That is why 82 percent of Otterbein students receive some form of merit and/or need-based aid.

ARE THERE OTHER STUDENT FEES NOT REFLECTED IN THE TOTAL ABOVE?There are no hidden student fees. You have access to the recreation center, fitness classes, tickets for home athletic events and all arts events, student organizations, the health center, washers and dryers and printers in computer labs, among other things, at no additional charge.

You will, however, have to cover costs for your participation in travel courses, or study abroad programs. And some specialized offerings, like private music lessons and art, equine and nursing courses, do have additional costs. (Those additional charges are noted in the schedule of classes and the course catalog.)

WHAT ARE MY OPTIONS FOR PAYMENT?Semester Payment Plan: Payment is due the first day of the term.

Monthly Payment Plan: With Otterbein’s e-pay, families can sign up and manage their own payment plan.

WHAT KIND OF AID PACKAGE CAN I EXPECT?Otterbein’s Affordability Estimator helps you predict the type of aid you might receive. Simply plug in your test scores, your G.P.A., and some other basic financial information and you’ll get an estimate of the aid package you will likely be offered. Explore how varying test scores affect your package to determine if it might be worth taking a standardized test once more.

MERIT-BASED SCHOLARSHIPS $5,000 to $31,424 (full tuition)

TALENT AWARDS* Up to $20,000

OTHER SCHOLARSHIPS** $1,000 to $5,000

* Talent awards are available through audition and competition in music, theatre and communication. Award amounts are inclusive of any other merit scholarships.

WHERE CAN I FIND OTTERBEIN’S AFFORDABILITY ESTIMATOR?

WHY SHOULD I APPLY FOR AID?Every family’s situation is different. In fact, Otterbein awards need-based aid to families with higher incomes than most public universities do. The FAFSA also guarantees families access to low-interest student loans.

Take a look at how aid was awarded to the 2014-2015 entering class of new students*.

HOW DO OTTERBEIN FAMILIES PAY FOR SCHOOL?

AREN’T PRIVATE SCHOOLS MORE EXPENSIVE?What many families don’t realize is that Otterbein works tirelessly to offer scholarships and competitive financial aid packages that bring a private school education closer to the cost of a state school.
