Officials at The Engineering Society of Detroit announced that a Christmas toy drive, spearheaded by the American Society for Quality Greater Detroit Section 1000 and joined by ESD, the ESD Affiliate Council, and Hartland Insurance of Auburn Hills, was a great success.Nearly 200 toys were collected for orphaned children in the Port Huron area and other needy children in the Southeast Michigan area. The drive featured Santa Claus – actually, Santa’s helper, Steve Leggett, ASQ Fellow and former section chair -- who took in the toys at various collection points, and distributed them at several area churches and shelters, including Salvation Army locations.Toy drive officials said that while all children involved were on Santa’s “nice list,” he did encounter a few adults on the “naughty list” and left a few lumps of coal.Officials with the Toy Drive say that while they receive more toys in the drive every year, the drive also receives more requests for help every year. The need is great, so ASQ will be asking for more toys at Christmastime 2018.

Greetings to all ASQ Detroit Section Members!

We had a great year in 2017 and I wanted to reflect on some of the highlights with you, the members!

We held certification courses on existing ASQ certifications and added a new course on the recently released Certified Supplier Quality Professional certification (CSQP).

We started meeting with students and faculty at Wayne State University (WSU), in addition to students at Lawrence

Tech University (LTU) in 2016. We hope that we will be able to have regular meetings on campuses in the future and bring many of the students into the Detroit Section as members. Please welcome them if you see them at the meetings and seminars, get to know them and share your quality work experiences with them so they can grow in the quality profession together along with us.

We had two programs covering the recent changes in the ISO 9001:2015 and IATF 16949:2016 quality standards. Denis Devos spoke with us about ISO 9001:2015 Risk Based Thinking and Cherie Reiche led a Seminar on the new IATF 16949:2016 quality automotive standard. Both General Membership Meetings were well received and packed full of details needed for practical implementation.

Bennie Fowler, Group VP at Ford, shared with us at our Fall Joint Kickoff meeting about the quality improvements that have been made at Ford over the last few years. We enjoyed an excellent presentation from David Butler, Chair of the ASQ Automotive Division, on the automotive industry with trust

issues that developed due to recalls in recent years. It will take time to rebuild the trust between the automotive OEMs and their suppliers as well as trust between consumers and automotive companies, but we are confident this trust will be rebuilt.

We held an Automotive Core Tools overview training workshop, led by JD Marhevko, ASQ Fellow and recipient of the Shainin Medal, which gave everyone a great refresher on the Automotive Core Tools and wetted our appetite for more training on individual tools in the future. Two other seminars were held, one on Quality Tools in Healthcare, led by Ruan Varney, and the other on Concepts of Variation, led by John Methot.

Other outstanding meetings were held on Cyber security with author Barbara Ciaramitaro, Value Stream Mapping with Dennis Sergent in a joint meeting with Michigan Lean Consortium, Digital 4.0 Transformation with John Fleming, retired Ford VP, and Managing Health over Healthcare with Bev Havens of DST Health Care. It will be tough to top this year’s programs but we are already working on some great programs for next year. Stay tuned for more details!

My thanks extend to all of the volunteers that have helped this past year in programs and for the section leadership in different functions who have been working behind the scenes to keep the Section going. I hope that this year has been a good one for you, both professionally and personally. With best wishes for you! Looking forward to seeing you again in 2018!

On Monday, April 30, 2018, Kush Shah will present, “Building and Sustaining a Continuous Improvement Culture at a Global Company,” at the World Conference. Kush’s presentation is from 1:30-2:30 pm.

Presentation description

Continuous improvement initiatives are often launched with a lot of excitement & enthusiasm but they fizzle over time. We will share a success story of building & sustaining culture of continuous improvement at a large multinational Fortune 10 company. We used innovative methods & proven solutions to build on the culture of improvement to drive breakthrough sustained results. The team recognized the “antibodies” to change and developed strategies to overcome. The team integrated various continuous improvement techniques such as Lean, Six Sigma, Design for Six Sigma, Shainin Red X to accelerate and integrate continuous improvement in all functions globally - including finance, marketing, sales, engineering and manufacturing. We also overcame challenges of implementing and sustaining continuous improvement in over 20 countries like China, Korea, India, Brazil, Germany, Italy, Egypt – with different cultures.

Results so far have been beyond initial leadership expectation of over $2B impact on company’s bottom line, 1,500 projects completed, 3,000 individuals trained in two years.

engineering society of detroit (esd) sponsors the 23rd annual michigan regional Future City Competition

www.asqdetroit.org

CCongratulations go to the winning team this year, st. John lutheran school, rochester, for developing the “best City of the Future!”

Future City is a cross-curricular educational program where middle school students imagine, design, and build cities of the future, utilizing STEAM (science, technology, engineering and math + architecture) to meet benchmarks. For over 4 months, students work as a team with a teacher champion and engineer mentor to design a virtual city model using SimCity software, research and compose an essay addressing this year’s theme, build a scale model of their city using

recycled materials, and complete a project plan using project management principles and the engineering design process. Perfecting their presentation skills to judges are also factored in, all tools they will need in the real world. Their future city models are complete with infrastructure: including transportation, communication systems, power plants, residential, health and safety hospitals and clinics, water systems, and green spaces. Student teams address important issues such as accessibility, sustainability, pollution, population density, water resources, traffic flow, and budgets. This year’s theme is “The Age Friendly City”.

This year’s challenge asks participants to identify an age-related challenge that exists in today’s urban environments and engineer two innovative solutions that allow their future city’s senior citizens to be as active and independent as they want to be.This is where you, our Detroit Section members come in – Volunteer Special Award Judges are always needed at this event. The need for judges for next year’s competition will be communicated. On January 22 at the Suburban Collection Showplace in Novi, teams presented their cities before a panel of judges at a Regional Competition. Congratulations to winner St.

First Place: St. John Lutheran School, Rochester, 2018 Michigan Regional Future City Competition. Right: Winnin model. Students will travel to Washington D.C. and compete in the national competition during Engineers’ Week.

Understanding the Problem is Half the Solution Metallurgical Failure Analysis When a designed component fails, either during production, or later in service, the risk of additional failures creates great concern. Diagnosing the precise cause of failure is needed to develop solutions to best contain and prevent repeat failures. Lab-based failure analysis is a useful tool for supporting manufacturing and quality issues by providing details of metallic component failures otherwise not available. This presentation will summarize the laboratory resources and methods used to diagnose steel component failures plus the types of information provided from such analysis.

Shane graduated with a Bachelors degree in Engineering and a Masters in Materials Engineering from McMaster University, Canada. He has performed failure analysis for various employers including: Dofasco, Bodycote and Liburdi Turbine Services. In 2009, he founded Steel Image, an engineering company specializing in failure analysis and on-site material evaluations. Considered an expert in these fields, he has worked around the world supporting automotive, mining, and oil industries. He is the past Chair of the Ontario American Society of Materials.

Current publications include: ISO 9001:2015 Memory Jogger IATF 16949:2016 Memory Jogger The Risk Based Thinking Workbook The Leader’s Journey

Changing the Role of the Modern Quality ProfessionalWithin IATF Through Auditing for IATF

This presentation focuses on how a quality professional, typically seen as an “academic”, can become a valued member of the business and seen as an asset through the focus on creating their own value and creating the mindset of thinking like a contractor and changing the language they use from “I NEED” to “I PROVIDE”. The speaker will explore the concept felt to hold the most non-value added activity in most organizations… INTERNAL AUDITING, and subsequently break down the entire process of auditing and transform it into an asset to the facility vs. a cost.

From the program to the individual audits, also to the auditors themselves, the speaker will tackle the soft leadership side and the hard, technical side, leaving you with a roadmap to totally revolutionize your system and audits to achieve bottom line financial results within your business. From the research, to the planning, to the execution of the audit we place the objective at the center of the activity and align it with the way your business runs. This takes auditing from a non-value added cost and translates it into a tool to drive financial return. A simple walk through template, real life case study and research from various other leadership authors is used.

Jeremy is a professional Speaker, Trainer, Author, Artist, Leadership Consultant & business owner who focuses on the business and financial case for leadership and creativity in systems thinking. He works as a technical expert and trainer with Plexus International where he focuses on Core Tools, GD&T and Systems (ISO 9001, 14001, IATF, AS) with a specialization in plant and operations and executive development.

Jeremy received his B.S. with dual specialization in Organizational Management and Corporate Finance, and further expanded his career with a MBA with a focus in Quality Management where he did his Master’s thesis on blending Six Sigma for Service with Systems Management. Additionally, he holds numerous ASQ certifications.
