AtomicAtomic received their second Norwegian “Grammy” (Spellemannprisen) for Best Jazz Album for their 2006 CD Happy New Ears! (Jazzland, 2006) which was a follow-up to 2005’s release of the triple-CD live set The Bikini Tapes (Jazzland, 2005).

Recorded at Bugge’s Room Studios in Oslo, Norway, Happy New Ears! features material written by Ljungkvist and Wiik, with Broo contributing the stellar piece “St. Lureplass”. The very essence of what makes Atomic’s unique style and sound wholly recognizable can be found in the obsessive chewing tobacco tribute of “Two Boxes Left” or in the hauntingly beautiful “Closing Stages”. A listening to Happy New Ears! reveals why the band garnered its second Best Jazz Album award after only four album releases!

Even though initially thought of as a sort of rebellion to the quaintness of the “Scandinavian Sound” which had become exemplified by Norwegian artists on labels such as ECM, Atomic found themselves developing a unique sound on their own. After their first two studio albums Feet Music (Jazzland, 2002) and Boom Boom (Jazzland, 2003), both their growing audience and music reviewers alike began to perceive them as an original flavor with an entirely individual energy that few Scandinavian jazz groups could match. An explosive blend of American free-jazz with European characteristics is how some reviewers have described them. Or better yet, “part academic lecture, part a fun night out on the town”, is how the band describes themselves, and is what makes their sound truly Atomic.

“Debut of the year!” wrote John Fordham in The Guardian (UK), describing Atomic as “One of the most exhilarating new groups on the European circuit!” Formed in the spring of 1999, these five

young musicians from the adventurous jazz underground of Sweden and Norway quickly forged a strong group identity without sacrificing their individual freedom of expression. Taking their first album title Feet Music from a composition by Ornette Coleman, Haker Flaten says, “The music is groovy. In a way, it needs people, and it’s searching for human contact -- it’s not introverted music. We see our music as being for extroverted people and hopefully they see it that way, too”.

Atomic’s second album release Boom Boom resulted in their first Norwegian “Grammy” award for Best Jazz Album of 2003.

While they make no secret of their admiration for leading American jazz musicians such as Archie Shepp, Charles Mingus, George Russell and Keith Jarrett, the music of Atomic is also mixed with an equal love of European free jazz from the 1960s. They regard the American and European jazz traditions as an inspiration rather than a restriction, as a springboard to set their own direction and position within jazz music.

This also shows through their collaboration with the Chicagoans, Ken Vandermark and Jeb Bishop, in the band “Atomic School Days” which released their first album “nuclear assembly hall” in 2003. A live recording from the acclaimed Chicago club “Green Mill” with the same lineup is expected to be released in 2008.

No strangers to the touring circuit, Atomic were on the road almost as soon as they were formed, shaping and refining their sound. They have already toured Europe, Scandinavia, North America and Japan several times.

With Happy New Ears!, Atomic successfully returns yet again with a resounding successful album, and further

sets the path for future conquests for those who like their jazz with both content and a sense of exhilaration.

Ralph Bowen with the Chris Andrew TrioSaxophonist Ralph Bowen has made his mark on the New York jazz scene for over two decades while bringing his “casual perfectionism” to clubs, concert halls, and festivals worldwide. He has performed with dozens of the finest jazz musicians and singers on the scene – Johnny Griffin, Renee Rosnes, Paquito d’Rivera, Michael Brecker, Freddie Hubbard, Rob McConnell, Maria Schneider, Chucho Valdes and Tony Williams. His discography of over 50 titles includes collaborations with Orrin Evans, Michel Camilo, and Horace Silver. As an Associate Professor of Jazz Studies at Rutgers University, composer/arranger, and performer, Bowen’s impact on audiences continues to expand.

Many Yardbird Suite patrons will remember his 1994 visit with the Free Trade group which toured in support of their Juno award winning recording of the same name.

Making his first appearance in Edmonton will be bassist Steve Kirby. His career of over 25 years includes performances with many jazz greats including two years with the Elvin Jones Jazz Machine, four years with the Cyrus Chestnut Trio. Steve has also toured, recorded or performed with Wynton Marsalis and the Lincoln Jazz Center Orchestra, Abbey Lincoln, Regina Carter, Jacky Terrason and James Carter. Since 2003, he has been the Director of Jazz Studies at the University of Manitoba. Kirby has been instrumental in rejuvenating the jazz scene in Winnipeg.

Ralph Bowen plays Selmer Paris saxophones exclusively.

Ralph Bowen plays Vandoren mouthpieces, reeds and ligatures exclusively.

“I could take that band [the Rutgers University Jazz Ensemble, Ralph Bowen-Director] on the road with me starting tomorrow.”

Ray Charles, War Memorial Hall, Trenton, December, 2000

“Bowen is an impressive (and impressively underrated) player with lyrical as well as technical skills. (He) extemporizes with harmonic savvy and rhythmic surefootedness one would expect of a good post-Coltrane, post-Brecker tenor - but unlike many of his peers, he’s rarely trite. So to call him a post-anything is actually doing him a disservice.”

Nate Chinen, Jazz Times Magazine, January, 2003

Ralf Buschmeyer QuartetCD Release EventBorn in Ontario, Ralf was drawn to music by the Blues and R&B stylings of Ray Charles, Eric Clapton and Booker T & the MGs. He picked up his first guitar at the age of 13 and shortly afterwards got his first live experience playing hard rock in Southern Ontario club bands.

Dedicated to becoming a fully-rounded musician, Ralf took up studies at Hamilton’s Mohawk College where he studied weekly for 3 years with Toronto jazz great Lorne Lofsky. During this time he served as musical director and composer for Rogers Cable TV show ‘The Metal Mike Show’. Fate took Ralf touring the country with country acts for 3 years following college which resulted in finding a new home in Calgary.

In 1998, Ralf became an alumni of the Banff Center For The Arts Jazz Workshop as well as an endorsed artist for Godin

Guitars. He is currently co-leader of the contemporary jazz quartet Terrain, co-leader of the bebop jazz ensemble Manic Thematic Trio, on the faculty of Mount Royal College’s Jazz Diploma Program, and a popular choice as a freelance guitarist for live engagements, recordings and as a composer-for-hire. In 2004, Ralf won the TD Canada Trust Jazz Festival Writers Commission Award and his collaborative effort with Richie Pollack’s ‘Stew’ earned them a WCMA nomination.

Live performance credits include P.J. Perry, Ingrid Jensen, Eric Marienthal, Bobby Shew, Peter Appleyard, Frank Mantooth, Guido Basso, Ralph Bowen, Amy Sky, The Platters, The Swinging Bovines, Johnny Tilotsen, Johanna Silanpaa, Jack Semple, Hugh Fraser, Phil Nimmons, Curtis Grambo, TR3, Kevin Turcotte, Steve Slagle, Mike Tomaro, and Tim Tamashiro.

Dino Dominelli QuartetOne of Edmonton’s younger generations of jazz artists, Dino Dominelli has been immersed in many forms of jazz. He also has a keen interest in traditional and ethnic music foundations and has applied these musical concepts into a newer style for his jazz arrangements of standards and original compositions.

Dominelli’s influences have come from a wide array of musicians and composers such as Charlie Parker, Warne Marsh, Lee Konitz, Ornette Coleman, Cannonball Adderly, Dexter Gordon, Sonny Rollins, John Coltrane, Joe Henderson, Michael Brecker, Jerry Bergonzi, Bob Berg, David Sanborn, Grover Washington, Courtney Pine, Keith Jarrett, Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, Miles Davis, Duke Ellington, Billy Strayhorn and Chris Potter.

Dino lived in Toronto from 1995 to 1998 and again from 2002 to 2004 where he spent most of his time performing around the area and studying with

Canadian jazz legends saxophonist Pat LaBarbera and multi-instrumentalist Don Thomspon.

He has shared the stage with internationally-renowned musicians such as Piano Seven of Switzerland, Charles Blenzig Trio of New York City, Roberto Zayas, Lito Gonzales, Xioa Bai of Taiwan, Robbin Harris of Hong Kong and Arturo Sandoval. In Canada, Dominelli has performed jazz concerts with Don Thompson, P.J Perry, Bernie Senensky, Jake Langley, Greg Pilo, Simon Fisk, Earl Seymour, Bob Mover and Norman Marshall Villeneuve.

Fieldtrip with guest Jim HeadFieldtrip is a Montreal-based jazz trio with an extensive and diverse repertoire comprised primarily of original compositions and reinterpretations of music from a variety of genres including jazz, folk, hip-hop, rock and popular music. All of their music serves as a vehicle for spontaneous self-expression and interaction through the energetic and trusting relationship they have fostered since their formation in September, 2005.

In 2005, Fieldtrip was awarded a professional development grant by the Prince Edward Island Council of the Arts to record an album of their original works. This album features a diverse array of compositions by double bassist Pat Reid written in response to his experiences volunteering and traveling in Uganda, Rwanda, Kenya, Tanzania and Ethiopia in the winter of 2006. This exciting debut also features celebrated Canadian saxophonist Chet Doxas as a special guest.

Most recently, Fieldtrip was selected and awarded scholarships to attend the prestigious Winter Career Development Residency at the Banff Centre for the Arts in 2008. There they will be preparing

for their Canadian tour, scheduled for this spring, where they will be presenting their debut album of original works.

Hutchinson Andrew TrioCD Release EventThe Hutchinson Andrew Trio is a unique voice on the Canadian Jazz Scene. Over the past 5 years this acoustic piano based trio has been bringing their own Western Canadian flair to the Canadian jazz landscape. They are excited to release their new album “Music Box” at the Yardbird Suite this January. “Music Box” is a beautiful mosaic of original compositions written primarily by pianist Chris Andrew. This album takes the group in a new direction from their critically acclaimed debut album “Lost but not forgotten”. As Tommy Banks commented upon hearing the new album, there is a “new maturity in the original tunes”, and the trio has “become even closer in their understanding of each other”.

The Hutchinson Andrew Trio’s music can be categorized as contemporary acoustic jazz. They mix elements such as contemporary swing, Latin, and acoustic groove to help form their own distinct sound. Kodi and Chris list artists such as Brad Mehldau, David Kikoski, Robert Glasper, and Kenny Werner as some of their influences.

Their debut album “Lost but not forgotten” (2005), reached CKUA radio’s top 10 for over a month and reached #3 on Calgary’s CJSW radio for over three months. In addition, CBC Radio put the album on their regular rotation as well as recording them live for air at the 2006 inaugural Canmore International Jazz Festival. The composition, 3 Corners of Emotion, was also featured in the Decidedly Jazz Danceworks production, ¡Bulla!, which toured Canada over the summer of 2005. The album garnered a 2006 Western Canadian Music Award

nomination in the Outstanding Jazz Recording category. More recently, the trio competed for the Galaxie Rising Star Award and GM Grand Prix Award on the mainstage at the 2006 Montreal International Jazz Festival.

The Hutchinson Andrew Trio has become a regular fixture on the Western Canadian jazz scene. They have performed to enthusiastic crowds at the events such as the Montreal, Medicine Hat, Calgary, Canmore and Yardbird Jazz Festivals, as well as headlining for the C-Jazz Festival. They are very excited to release their album at the Yardbird Suite in Edmonton the January.

“...they are a group that is committed to building on their view of the beautiful history of this art form called jazz with a keen sense of contributing, in the most positive way, to the future of this music from their highly personal and deeply committed musical relationship.”

Hugh Fraser, Jazz TrombonistProfessor of Jazz Studies, UVic

“...the trio combines the creativity of jazz’s heyday and the sensibility of contemporary pop culture.”

Kenna Burima, CJSW Radio and FFWD Magazine

“Pianist Chris Andrew proved capable of seducing phrases as easy to absorb as Bill Evans...[that]...evolve almost unnoticed into a more complex buildup...into something resembling Brad Mehldau’s more intense live trio dates.”

Mark Sabbatini, Live Concert

Review for AllAboutJazz.com

“...one of the strongest Canadian recordings of 2005. There is a high level of technicality displayed that is used in very imaginative and creative ways that draw the listener in and takes them on a most interesting journey.”Lyle Rebbick, Medicine Hat Jazz Festival

Brett Miles QuartetBrett began playing in Edmonton in the 1980’s, before moving to New York in 1984. While there he performed and/or recorded with Buddy Miles, Taylor Dayne, Mick Jagger, Sample This, Milo Z, Jomanda, Sam & Dave, Ivan Neville, Granddaddy I.U., Kid Capri, and others. Brett’s saxophone is featured on the extended EP vinyl version of Mick Jagger’s “Sweet Thing,” Jomanda’s maxi-cassette single, “I Like It,” Granddaddy I.U.’s “Represent,” and Sample This CD, “Sample This.”

Besides accompanying many other artists, multi-instrumentalist Brett Miles also fronts his own extremely danceable, funky and energetic band, Magilla Funk Conduit.

Andrew Glover QuartetAndrew Glover is an accomplished pianist and composer. His huge body of work has been performed in Europe and the U.S., as well as here in his home town of Edmonton.

A talented pianist and composer, Andrew graduated from the Grant MacEwan Community College, and studied solo piano with Adrian Chornowol and Charlie Austin. Andrew worked with Mike Rud, Jack Semple, Kennedy Jensen, Dianne Donovan, the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra, Scott Hamilton and Sheena Easton among others. For over ten years he toured extensively with the Big Miller Band.

In addition, many artists have performed and recorded Andrew’s compositions. Six of the eleven compositions on Jack Sample’s “Grey and Yellow” CD were

written by Andrew, as well as four songs for Dianne Donovan’s release “Yes or No”. He was also a principal writer for Edmonton’s ‘Pazzport’. Andrew’s compositions and arrangements have been performed or recorded by John Abercrombie, Anna Beaumont, Caroline Mae Johnson, Jacek Kochan, Pat LaBarbera, Theresa Lightfoot, George McFetridge, Don Thompson, Jean-Pierre Zanella, and Alfie Zappacosta.

Modo Trio with guest Wayne HorvitzEdmonton based Modo Trio was founded in 1999 by trombonist Craig Brenan and bassist Jeff Johnson to explore their mutual interest in African and Spanish music, as well as the drum’n’bass music that was reaching Western Canada at that time.

The group solidified its current lineup when drummer Bill George joined the group in 2003, and has continued to evolve its approach, bringing inspirations such as dub music into its already eclectic sound. Defined by Brenan’s rare use of harmonizers and loops to augment the sound of his acoustic trombone, Modo Trio has been called “a fascinating mix of exotic contemporary grooves and improvisation” (Roger Levesque, Edmonton Journal). They have toured across Canada and appeared on Canadian television.

SHOWiNFORMATiON • PERFORMERBiOS10

Prior to their latest release The Uninvited, the group self-released two recordings, including 2005’s You Are Being Probed, which received extensive airplay on Canadian radio.

Modo Trio’s latest recording project involves collaboration with one of the most creative musicians of U.S. scene, Seattle- based Wayne Horvitz. Horvitz is a composer, pianist and electronic musician who has performed extensively throughout Europe, Asia, Australia, and North America. He is the leader of Zony Mash, Pigpen, The Four plus One Ensemble and co-founder of the New York Composers Orchestra. He has performed and collaborated with Bill Frisell, Butch Morris, John Zorn, Robin Holcomb, Fred Frith, Julian Priester, Philip Wilson, Michael Shrieve and Carla Bley among others.

He has received commissions from the NEA, Meet The Composer, Kronos String Quartet, Seattle Chamber Players, Mary Flagler, BAM, Earshot Jazz and others. Collaborations with choreographers include work with Paul Taylor with the White Oak Dance Project, Liz Lerman Dance Exchange, and Crispin Spaeth. Film work includes music and sound design for three PBS specials and Gus Van Sandt’s Psycho. He was the 2001 recipient of the Artist Trust Fellowship (Seattle) and the 2002 recipient of the Rockefeller Foundation MAP Grant.

“The delightful mix of tones and textures is almost a sufficient reward in itself, but Horvitz is also a damn fine musician with an ear for a groove. This disc is way more happenin’ than most of the techno on the racks right now.”

Bill Tilland, Alternative Press on Wayne Horvitz’ solo CD “Monologue”

Darren Sigesmund QuintetCanadian trombonist and composer Darren Sigesmund is rapidly becoming an established voice on the Canadian and international music scenes. Based in Toronto, he is gaining extensive touring experience after having recently led his quintet on whirlwind tours of Australia, Asia and Canada. Darren is a versatile and gifted trombonist who projects a warm brass sound through imaginative compositions.

Darren has studied and performed at the internationally renowned Banff Centre for the Arts Jazz Workshops with acclaimed artists such as Dave Holland, Kenny Wheeler, Julian Priester, Richie Beirach, Dave Liebman, Steve Coleman, Don Thompson, Pat LaBarbera, and Hugh Fraser. He has studied trombone with many of the great masters including Michael Davis (New York), Ian McDougall (University of Victoria), Jerry Johnson (Stratford Festival) and Gord Sweeny (Toronto Symphony). Since attending the University of Toronto for Jazz Performance, Darren has honed his composition skills under the tutelage of Frank Falco, one of Canada’s finest instructors in composition.

“Incredibly well crafted pieces [and] fantastic vehicles for improvisational exploration… I give my highest recommendation.”

Tim Ries, Rolling Stones Saxophonist

“Sigesmund, with a sound as warm as the purr of a Rolls Royce, is a thoughtful player… The beauty of Sigesmund’s tone and the agility of his technique led to a subtlety in his improvising, which went beyond good chops and good schooling to genuine communication.”Steve Pedersen, Halifax Chronicle Herald,

“smooth and sophisticated trombone work and ingenious compositions”

Geoff Chapman, Toronto Star, July 28 2005

“Chorale and Solemn… resonated with a subtle, dark beauty. Chorale featured some gleaming horn voicings and a series of evocative, song-like changes… [Solemn] included an alluring trombone solo from Sigesmund, whose warm, melancholic vibrato glistened with quiet intensity.”

Jessica Nicholas, The Age, Melbourne AU, Aug. 29, 2005

“Darren is a very naturally gifted musician. He is a fine trombonist and a composer of some fascinatingly original music. His working quintet contains some of the brightest talent in Canadian Jazz. This is a group that has the potential to become a major force in Canadian Jazz.”

Don Thompson, Canadian Jazz Veteran

“Darren Sigesmund’s first CD, Strands, demonstrates a composer of real promise, weaving together jazz, Latin and impressionist elements with a strong sense of both colour and drama. The same thoughtfulness extends to the sometimes subtle, lyrical approach he takes to trombone. Best of all, Sigesmund has assembled an unusually imaginative group to execute his vision, including tenor saxophonist Quinsin Nachoff, guitarist Reg Schwager, bassist Jim Vivian and drummer Anthony Michelli.”
