Ellerslie brings Weta Workshop to Christchurch Ellerslie International Flower Show is bringing Weta Workshop to Christchurch, with their fantasy sculptures featuring in former All Black Andy Ellis and landscape architect Danny Kamo’s gold medal winning entry from the Singapore Garden Festival. The international award-winning garden by design duo Kamo and Ellis has been adapted and will provide the stunning setting for Johnny Fraser-Allen’s The Gloaming exhibition, curated and presented by Sir Richard Taylor and Tania Rodger from Weta Workshop. Fraser-Allen, a senior sculptor and conceptual designer at Weta Workshop, created the sculptures for the popular exhibition that ran in Wellington late last year. The sculptural portraits are based on Eurocentric and Pacific mythological creatures and will be located within the native bush garden. “It’s exciting to be part of Ellerslie and quite a change for me. I already knew quite a lot about the show though as my mother and grandmother live in Christchurch and go along every year to check it out,” Fraser-Allen says. Kamo and Ellis are thrilled their garden – that won gold in July last year at the Singapore Garden Festival against 15 of the world’s top garden designers – has been given a new twist. It will still feature the cave that was created by Weta Workshop previously, but the shaking movement has been removed. “This is something really different that we are sure will transport young and old alike into a world of fantasy. It is great to be able to adapt the garden and work on something new for the show,” Kamo, of KamoMarsh Landscape Architects, says. Fraser-Allen is particularly happy the children of Christchurch will have the opportunity to see ‘The Gloaming’ in person. “My goal is to make the fantastical more realistic for kids, as well as inspire adults to imagine the stories that surround them.” This amazing feature garden exhibit will not be judged – it is there to entertain and delight and is a fantastic opportunity for Christchurch to have Weta Workshop right here in the Garden City. Ellerslie International Flower Show will be held in North Hagley Park from 6 – 10 March. Johnny Fraser-Allen’s ‘The Gloaming’ exhibition, curated and presented by Sir Richard Taylor and Tania Rodger from Weta Workshop, will feature in a garden at Ellerslie International Flower Show. For tickets go to: www.ellerslieflowershow.co.nz, all open Christchurch City Council Service Centres, Mitre 10 Mega Stores in Christchurch, Ashburton and Timaru, Terra Viva and Nichols Garden Centres. www.summertimes.co.nz Christchurch City Council will open applications for the annual grants funding round to support community groups from Friday 15 February. The application opening and closing dates are: ∙ Strengthening Communities Fund (grants of over $5000) Applications open on Friday 15 February and close on Sunday 31 March 2013 ∙ Small Grants Fund (grants of $5000 and under) Applications open on Tuesday 16 April and close on Friday 31 May 2013. The Council will hold grants funding information sessions to ensure community organisations have the opportunity to seek information and have all their questions answered before they submit their applications for community funding. The Council’s community funding information sessions begin on Thursday 31 January and run until Tuesday 23 April. The information sessions will be held at a number of venues throughout in the city. Council Community Support Unit Manager Carolyn Gallagher says the Council annually allocates a significant amount of grants funding to community groups via the Strengthening Communities Fund and the Small Grants Fund. “These funds play a key role in the building of strong communities. Applicants apply for funding and they are then assessed using a number of criteria. The Council’s Community Support Unit staff then make a recommendation to the Council (for metropolitan projects) or Community Boards Early Bird Tickets Community grants funding to open next month (for local projects) - who then make the funding decisions. “The Council granted funds of $6,915,566 to over 700 community groups in the 2012 / 2013 funding round for the Strengthening Communities Fund and the Small Grants Fund. These grants funded a range of community projects including a grant from the Small Grants Fund for the ‘Shine in the park’ community fun day in Shirley and a grant from the Strengthening Communities Fund which contributed to a ‘social connectedness’ programme to reduce social isolation for the elderly,’ she says. For further information visit www.ccc.govt. nz/cityleisure/communityfunding or call the Council’s Customer Call Centre on 03 941 8999 or 0800 800 169. The stories from some of the long-term residents in the Fendalton Waimairi area have been captured forever as part of an oral history project. Fendalton Waimairi Community Board commissioned Christchurch oral historian Dorothy McMenamin to gather stories from residents who had lived in the area in their youth or for at least 40 years. “I spoke to 11 people in total,” Mrs McMenamin, who herself lives in the area, said. Only one person was under 75 years of age, the oldest being 102-year-old Nancy Duxbury, who moved to the area from Banks Peninsula when she was seven after her father died. At least three of the contributors had amazing photographic memories, one of whom was Miss Duxbury. “Her recollections were so vivid.” One of the memories Miss Duxbury shared was how, at age 21, she took out a mortgage to pay £1,000 for a family home on Fulton Avenue – where she lived with her widowed mother and sister. Other residents shared stories about their families’ market gardens and orchards, located between Papanui and what was then little Harewood airport. They recalled the days before piped water and sewage systems, when windmills were pumped on their sections for running water and the ‘night soil men’ visited regularly. As children some lads had to milk cows before setting off on bikes or walking to school each morning. Others described tram trips to the end of Fendalton Road and how Burnside Road changed from being a road-to-nowhere to become Memorial Avenue. Fendalton Waimari Community Board chair Val Carter is thrilled with the final results of the project. “The board felt this was a very important project to fund. This area has already changed so much – and we are sure it will continue to change. We wanted to capture the history of the area for future generations, to make sure that knowledge is not lost.” The oral recordings, with summary transcripts and photographs, will be archived by the Council’s Library Digital Content Team.
