EXPECTING THE UNEXPECTED

I f it ever crossed your mind that Jesus was some-what lacking in a sense of humor, today’s Gospel should belie any such

notion. Jesus’ story of the five wise and five foolish bridesmaids is downright hilarious. The circumstances of the story were surely fa-miliar to Jesus’ listeners, just as they are—if we think about it—to us. Weddings never, ever start on time. There’s always a delay. Buttons pop off at the last minute. Flowers wilt. Cars full of wedding guests get caught in traffic. Soloists contract laryngitis. Brides or grooms or priests show up late! So the only reasona-ble way to approach a wedding is with a sense of humor, to realize that something probably will go awry, and, when that happens, to smile about it. Jesus tells this funny story to encourage us to be watchful, yes; to be ready, yes. But he doesn’t tell it to make us dour and somber. The heavy-hearted tremble, waver, lose sight of their place and purpose, and fall asleep. The lighthearted know that the unex-pected will happen—is bound to happen—so they are awake in their place and ready in their purpose when it comes. -Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

GETTING TO KNOW YOU

A t the end of today’s Gospel, when the foolish virgins return from the quick shop with the oil, they are locked out of the wedding. The

groom answers their pleas, not with a question, “Why weren’t you ready?” but with the statement, “I don’t know you” (Mt 25:12). Now that sounds kind of odd, if the bridegroom represents the Lord, because God knows everything, and everybody. In Matthew’s Gos-pel, this phrase seems to imply that “because you made no effort to know me, I don’t know you.” In oth-er words, the oil in the parable stands for knowing the Lord. Or at least making an effort to know him. So what am I doing to get to know Jesus? One way to know someone is to act like them. Actors who portray a real person try to watch videos of that person to see how they talk, walk, relate to people, what kind of posture they have, how they dress, etc. We can act like Jesus by following his example of care for the poor and the sick, forgiving people who have done wrong, teaching people about God’s love, feeding the hungry, and giving God the credit for what we do. Another way to get to know someone is to talk to them. The more we pray, the more we get close to Jesus. We can praise God for Creation, we can thank God for all the giving (and forgiving!) We can ask for help for those we love and for God’s strength in our weakness (2 Cor 12:9). But we don’t get to know someone if we do all the talking. Our prayer can in-clude time to be quiet and listen to the Lord. We also listen to God by reading God’s words in the Bible. And God can speak to some people in art, song, or poetry. The advice and wisdom of friends and rela-tives can also be God speaking to us. This anxiety may manifest in new fears, such that a child becomes reluctant to try new things, or it may exac-erbate existing fears, such that a child becomes even more anxious than before. Parents can help their chil-dren with anxiety by practicing techniques for deep breathing, ensuring regular exercise and talking hon-estly about feelings and concerns. ESPERAR LO INESPERADO

L a Si alguna vez se te pasó por la mente que a Jesús le faltaba un poco del sentido del humor, el Evangelio de hoy destierra esa noción. La

parábola de Jesús sobre las cinco jóvenes precavidas y las cinco jóvenes descuidadas es sumamente chistosa. Las circunstancias de la parábola sin duda resultaban familiares a los que escuchaban a Jesús, como lo son para nosotros. Las bodas nunca, nunca comienzan a la hora. Siempre hay un retraso. Botones que se caen al último minuto. Flores que se marchitan. Vehículos llenos de invitados atascados en el tráfico. Solistas que con-traen laringitis. ¡Novias, novios o sacerdotes que lle-gan tarde! Así que la única manera razonable de en-carar una boda es con buen sentido del humor, cons-cientes de que algo va a salir mal, y, cuando eso suce-da, sonreír. Jesús cuenta esta historia chistosa para alentarnos a que seamos vigilantes, sí; a estar preparados, sí. Pero no nos la cuenta para que nos amarguemos y nos ensombrezcamos. Los apesadumbrados tiemblan, titu-bean, pierden de vista su lugar y propósito, y se que-dan dormidos. CONOCERTE

A l final del Evangelio de hoy, cuando las vírge-nes insensatas regresan de la tienda rápida con el aceite, quedan excluidas de la boda.

El novio responde a sus súplicas, no con una pregunta: "¿Por qué no estabas listo?" pero con la afirmación: "No te conozco" (Mt 25,12). Ahora, eso suena un poco extraño, si el novio representa al Señor, porque Dios lo sabe todo, ya todos. En el Evangelio de Mateo, esta frase parece implicar que "porque no hiciste ningún esfuerzo por conocerme, yo no te conozco". En otras palabras, el aceite de la parábola significa conocer al Señor. O al menos haciendo un esfuerzo por conocerlo. Entonces, ¿qué estoy haciendo para conocer a Jesús? Una forma de conocer a alguien es actuar como ellos. Los actores que interpretan a una persona real inten-tan ver videos de esa persona para ver cómo habla, camina, se relaciona con la gente, qué tipo de postura tiene, cómo se viste, etc. Podemos actuar como Jesús siguiendo su ejemplo de cuidado. los pobres y los en-fermos, perdonando a las personas que han obrado mal, enseñando a la gente sobre el amor de Dios, ali-mentando a los hambrientos y dando a Dios el crédito por lo que hacemos. Otra forma de conocer a alguien es hablar con él. Cuanto más oramos, más nos acerca-mos a Jesús. Podemos alabar a Dios por la creación, podemos agradecer a Dios por todo el dar (¡y perdo-nar!) Podemos pedir ayuda para aquellos que ama-mos y por la fuerza de Dios en nuestra debilidad (2 Corintios 12: 9). Pero no llegamos a conocer a nadie si hablamos todos. Nuestra oración puede incluir tiempo para estar en silencio y escuchar al Señor. También escuchamos a Dios leyendo las palabras de Dios en la Biblia. Y Dios puede hablarle a algunas personas a través del arte, la canción o la poesía. Los consejos y la sabiduría de amigos y familiares también pueden ser Dios hablándonos. que ocurre hoy y lo que pasará en el futuro, puede ser trans-mitida a nuestros hijos, pon-iéndolos ansiosos también. Esta ansiedad puede manifestarse en nuevos miedos, los cuales pueden llevar a que los niños se nieguen a probar cosas nuevas, o puede agravar sus miedos existentes, poniéndolos más ansiosos que antes.
