Cultural Dinner Event

On Saturday, July 28th we participated in a cultural exchange of ideas focused on religion and fasting at the Turkish Cul-tural Center in Buffalo. The Muslim community reached out to the parishion-ers of St. Nicholas during Ramadan, their time of great fasting, in order to share a cultural meal with their friends and neighbors as part of their tradition. The St. Nicholas community was met with a very warm welcome as they shared tables, exchanged conversation; expressed reli-gious viewpoints and ideas, and even ‘broke bread’ together as they enjoyed traditional Turkish cuisine. Both Turks & Ukrainians (we) shared in this lovely dinner following a presentation on the ne-cessity of fasting as part of developing our own relationship with God. For people of two different cultures and walks of life, it was truly fascinating to realize just how much we all have in common. Both of our religions utilize fasting as a type of medi-tation and personal sacrifice to help us develop a deeper and more meaningful relationship with God. Certainly we be-lieve in Christ and read scripture in the Holy Bible, while Muslims follow the teachings of Mohammad and the Koran, but we were delighted to find that many of our underlying beliefs in meditation, prayer, and fasting somehow keep us connected to those of different faiths when it comes to developing and express-ing our religious faith and traditions. We are looking to host them at St. Nicholas

When we think of everything that the Mother of God endured in order to play a vital role in our salvation and the beautiful serenity of her na-ture, I often think of the oyster and the pearl of great sacrifice. Through the everyday events of our lives, God reveals simple lessons to us, and not that long ago, while I was on vacation near the seashore with my son, we decided to take a walk. We came upon a little open-air stand called ‘The Oyster Shop.’ Inside, an older lady stood with a big bucket of oysters. She said that each oyster had a pearl and, for five dol-lars, the children could choose one. She would open it for them, and whatever was inside would be theirs. Next, she began a slide presen-tation and explained the story of how a pearl develops. The woman told us that, at some time in the course of the oyster’s development, a foreign substance such as a grain of sand gets into the little muscle and irritates the oys-ter. In response, the oyster covers that irritant with a secretion. The longer the irritation is there, the more the oyster coats it. Pearl oysters vary in size and can be quite rough and ugly. Yet what is happening inside is a combination of rainbows, moonlight, and bits of flame. Once the oyster accepts the irritation as part of itself, the pearl begins to develop. The worst storms, gales, even hurricanes will not dislodge it. As time goes by and this oyster is finally pulled up from the bed where it has been for many years, it is opened only to reveal a beautiful pearl. Later, when I had time to think about, I medi-tated on the story of how a pearl forms and it reminded me of how something comes into our spiritual life; it comes because the Lord has chosen us to do something special that we may offer our own pearl up to God. Thinking about other details of the pearl, you realize that the longer the pearl stays in the oyster the more valuable it becomes. Therefore, the longer we

stay committed and the more we do for God, the more beautiful will be the pearl that each one of us can give. It is through our own per-sonal hardships that we find the strength to be-come the people of faith that God intends us to be. It comes from years and years of steadfast obedience to God in spite of our hardships and the everyday irritations of life. Somehow, we too develop something beautiful inside of us. The Pearl is just one more analogy of how God can take our brokenness and turn each of us in-to something beautiful -- if we let Him. And there was no greater ‘Pearl’ in the entire world then the one who came through the Most Holy Mother of God.

нинішного Євангеліоя почасто і ми не вміємо прощати, а бажаємо Господнього прощення. Христос нам готовий простити усі наші провини, якщо ми не пам’я-татимемо провин тих, що нас образили, що з нас сміялися, що нас очорнювали, що нас у який небудь спосіб кривдили.

Отець небесний наказує сонцю сходити на злих і на добрих, і посилає дощ на пра-ведних і неправедних, читаємо у 5-ій главі Матея. Коли ми провиняємося проти інших, у нас є бажання, щоб вони нам простили. Рівно ж, коли приходимо до церк-ви помолитися, нагадаймо собі, чи хтось має щось проти нас. Каже Господь: «Залеши свій дар перед жертовнико, іди і помирися, а тоді прийди назад принести своій дар». Жертва Господеві не можи бути мила, якщо нема спокою у нашому серці. А спокою не буде, якщо не живемо з усіма у мирі. Постановім отже помиритися, наладнати, просити про-щення і простити.

В молитві «Отче Наш» так говоримо: «Прости нам провини наші, як і ми прощаємо тим, що провинилися проти нас.»

Повищі слова відмовляємо кожного разу коли молимося словами якими Христос нас навчив. Оцю молитву, як зрештою усі молит-ви потрібно молитися з роздумуванням над словами яких відмовляємо, щоб це не було переливання з пустого у порожне, щоб це не було механічне повторювання. Молитва є розмовою з Богом, а кожну розмову слід вести свідомо, з повною увагою, головно коли наш співрозмовник сам Бог Отець – Створитель, який усім повсякчасно опікуєть-ся, сам Бог Син – Відкупитель, який за нас помер і воскрес, що постійно з нами перебу-

ває, охороняє нас і сам Бог Дух Святий –Уті-шитель, який нас завжди освячує і прова-дить нас дорогою справедливости.

Прощати кривди, це одна з характерис-тичних рис Христових послідовни-

ків. Не пам’ятати зло, не відпла-чуватися за нього, що більше – добром віддавати за образи, незалежно, які вони були б для нас тяжкі.

Коли Христа на хрест розпи-нали, Він молився за своїх во-

рогів, які для Нього у тій хвилині і не були ворогами: «Отче прости їм,

бо не знають що роблять». Первомученик Степан, коли його камену-

вали отак так просив : «Не візьми їм цього за зле».

Коли б Христос нам не прощав наших про-вин, то не булоб жодної надії та нічого іншо-го не залешилоб ся, як цілковите наше зни-щення. А ми призначені до чогось вищого, до участи у царстві Божім, до вічного перебу-вання з Господом.

Кров Степана і його поведінка, превили до навернення Савла, який став Павлом, і поши-рив Хритстову науку на цілий тоді знаний світ.

Наше прощення преверни до нас навіть найбільш завзятих противників. Від ворож-нечі перейдемо до приязні, від ненависти до любови.

Наші вороги перестають нам бути ворога-ми, коли ми їм покажемо свою любов і про-щення, і покажеться, що властиво, нема во-рогів. Бо як покажемо любов, вона нам вер-ниться. Якщо простимо, одержемо прощен-ня, а коли б навіть від людий і не одержали, то одержемо його від Небесного Батька.

У задумі оновити східно-християнське благочестя Слуга Божий Андрей зак-лав основи для відроджен-ня і росту монашого жит-тя за Уставом св. Теодора Студита. Невтомно тру-дився на цьому полі його рідний брат, бл. п. ігумен Климентій, страдний і смиренний сповідник віри. Від них обох, боговгодних Бра-тів, перебрав я їхню спадщину і їхні в передчутті смерти висловлені про-хання: рятувати монаший Чин Бра-

тів Студитів. Гос-подь Бог поміг мені виконувати їхню волю: в Ук-раїні, попри уда-ри, росло Студит-ське братство, а серед Албанських гір народилася Студитська Лав-ра з Архімандри-

том на чолі. І в далеких країнах вже миготять вогнища студитських ос-трівців.

Студитська Лавра і її дочки-монас-тирі будуть збирати тих, що, покида-ючи життя в світі через любов до Христа і до Його Святої Церкви, йдуть служити світові у відреченні від нього, в посвяті і молитві. Йдуть

йому служити не як себе-любні чи слабодушні втіка-чі зі світу, але як невтомні працівники і молитвеники за нього, за весь світ, за свою Церкву, за свій Нарід ... На островах монашого життя всі ті, що там збира-ються, стають зберігачами і різьбярами рідної україн-ської християнської духов-

ности, що виявляє себе у Святій Лі-тургії, обрядовій чистоті, в східнохри-стиянській богословській думці і мо-нашому житті за зразком стародав-нього східнохристиянського благо-честя. Вони також співчувають тим, що стоять у боротьбі з лукавим сві-том, вони своїм життям стають нат-хненниками для духовних покликань до служіння своїй Церкві!

Бажанням Сл. Б. Андрея і благан-ням моїм, спадкоємця його заповітів, є, щоб усі наші монаші Чини і Згро-мадження, яких значення і праці для добра душ ніхто не применшує, зма-гались між собою не за впливи і вла-ду і не за те, щоб сподобатися людям, але щоб суперничали між собою за ріст в особистій святості і за ревне і чесне служіння Христові і рідній Ук-раїнській Церкві. Тому благаю всіх монахів і монахинь: не соромтеся свого рідного, дорожіть своєю духов-ною спадщиною! Яка ж вона, ця на-

ша духовна спадщина, цінна і багата! Вона ніяк не заслуговує на те, щоб погорджувати нею! „Не давайте свя-щенне собакам, ані не кидайте перел ваших перед свиньми, щоб не топта-ли їх ногами і, обернувшись, вас не роздерли" /Мт. 7, 6/. Нехай наша ду-ховна спадщина пройме ваші душі, запалить вогонь у ваших серцях, щоб її зберігати і плекати! На цій спадщи-ні освячуйте ваші душі благодаттю і дарами Святого Духа!

*** В часі мого прибуття

до Рима відбувався II Ватиканський Собор. Як і в минулих століт-тях, починаючи від Пер-шого Апостольського Собору в Єрусалимі, Собор є збором верхов-них пастирів Христової Церкви, які дають свід-чення віри і життя вві-рених їхньому учитель-ському і пастирському служінню Церков. Отці Собору свідчать перед Церквою і перед усім світом.

Свідомий вагомости такого свід-чення, у своєму Слові до Отців Собо-ру дня 11 жовтня 1963 року загово-рив я не про свідчення своє, – воно ж було відоме, – але про Свідчення на-шої Української Церкви: про свід-

чення її віри в Христа і Його Єдину, Святу, Соборну й Апостольську Цер-кву, свідчення, підтверджене крива-вою печаттю безстрашного сповід-ництва, терпіння, мучеництва і гора-ми наших жертв. Щоб висловити пе-ред усім світом вдячність, признання й особливо щоб заявити про співчут-тя страждальцям і надати їм мораль-ну підтримку, вніс я прохання-пропо-зицію: піднести Києво-Галицьку Ми-трополію і всієї Руси до патріярхаль-ної гідности.

Це вперше в усій істо-рії нашої Церкви ідея її Патріярхату була прого-лошена привселюдно, ясно і на такому всесвіт-ньому форумі, як Все-ленський Собор, хоч са-ма ідея не нова: Київські митрополити, хоч не но-сили патріяршого титу-лу, керували Церквою наче патріярхи, користу-ючись патріяршими правами на зразок ін-

ших Східних Церков. Вони були сві-домі, що Патріярхат Церкви – це ви-димий знак зрілости і самобутности помісної Церкви та могутній чинник в церковному і народному житті.

Glory to Jesus Christ! Glory Forever! August 19, 2012 A.D. Dear (say your name here for your very own personal letter), I was right….remember what I said last week about going to “the Fair” with the little Martelli kids and seeing everything through their eyes? Well we did go, it was a fantastic time, and for sure, everything looks different and new when viewed from their perspective. Our Erie Co. Fair is 173 years old and everything was new and exciting! Arriving early Thursday morning, just as the gates opened, we were able to stay till the middle of the afternoon. It would have been a longer outing, if there weren’t so many tired adults to deal with. Know what I mean??!! ☺ We covered most of the grounds and stopped at the really, really important things, for example, the pig barn, the chicken house and of course the “mookies.” (that would be dairy cattle) About that stuff… the unanimous decision of the kids was: “That’s stinky! ” Everything was great and wonderful, but besides ‘Thomas the Tank Engine’ and lunch, everyone agreed the Fireman’s Building was a definite thumbs up. The building contained fire trucks and rescue vehicles, from brand-new to vintage, and there was also a remote controlled fire dog named Sparky. Every kid who entered into “Sparky’s territory” was immediately mesmerized by this cute little talking puppy. Baby Natalia fell in love with the thing and had to go back and give him a great big hug before she left. It was one of those special days that made memories for the rest of the year, if not for the rest of our lives. I know we all have those great memories of ‘The Fair’ and of summer. Yep, we were at the Fair! Maybe we’ll make it back one more time yet this year. The great baseball player, Lou Gehrig once said, “I’m the luckiest man alive.” I don’t know about luck, but I’m certainly one of the most blessed! Thanks and glory to God for all things! “Let the little children come unto me, for such is the Kingdom of heaven!” They truly are heaven on earth. I hope you, too, are enjoying the little ones in your life. (The big ones too!) The next important event on our calendars will be the marking of Ukraine’s independence, which was declared on August 24, 1991. Ukrainians, those of Ukrainian descent, and those who wish they were Ukrainian, will soon celebrate that great day throughout all the world. There will be festivities and commemorations in our churches and communities during this coming week, and especially next Sunday, August 26. We will remember those long years of struggle, suffering and persecution. We will remember those who carried the light of freedom during those terrible dark days. We will remember those who gave their lives so that freedom would once again come to that beautiful land of Ukraine. How they struggled! How they fought! And all the while, never losing hope; never losing sight of the great goal of freedom from the oppression of the Soviet yoke. That vision ultimately became a reality on August 24, 1991, twenty-one years ago. Glory to God who heard the prayers and pleas of so many and showed His great mercy! There will be many activities and much food on this great day, and that is as it should be. However, we must never forget those who made this freedom possible. We must never forget what August 24 is all about. As we say here in America, “Freedom is not free!” It is paid for with blood, sweat, tears and constant vigilance. The battle for

freedom never ends. There are and always will be those who want to exert power and rob us of our rightful heritage. Yes, celebrate the day, but remember those heroes, both living and reposed, and pray their victory was not in vain or was not just a brief time of freedom. Let them be an example for us here in the United States of America, and in any place where our cherished freedoms are threatened! May that freedom reign forever in that great land of Ukraine and throughout all the world! Praise to our God, and congratulations to the Sisters Servants of Mary Immaculate on their very successful pilgrimage at Sloatsburg, NY last weekend. It was their 58th annual pilgrimage, and according to their website, it was attended by over 3500 people. The pilgrims, priests and bishops from near and far gathered under beautiful summer skies for that annual time of renewal of soul and body. This event, too, is one of the milestones of every summer and I’m sure is a source of strength and energy for the rest of the year for our churches when the pilgrims return to their various parishes and appointments. Pilgrimages are good. Pilgrimages are VERY good! Keep up the good work, Sisters! One of these years I’m going to make it again. Last time I was there it was with my dear Mother, of blessed memory, who loved to make the journey each year. That was a very long time ago. The Olympic games are over and the USA did great – total medals; total golds. Our West Seneca native, a member of the volley-ball team, came home a bit disappointed. The team was favored to bring home a medal, which everyone thought would be gold, but they were knocked out of the competition by the Italian team and never even got to the medal rounds. The other locals, however, did bring home medals, gold in pole-vaulting and silver in archery competition. Those athletes can and should be examples for all of us as we look at them and see only dedication and hard work. Oh we’re not gonna go jumping over any hurdles or shoot any arrows, but we certainly want to receive the crown of victory just as they did. They are crowned with a crown of earthly honor, a medal, some money and many, many accolades from their community. Our message in all this is to simply look at them and see all that they do to get this stuff. If they dedicate all that time, energy, expense to attain these earthly treasures, how much more should we dedicate and commit ourselves to receiving “that crown that will never fade.” Many of the medal winners, and those who did not receive a medal left the games promising to return again in four years. They have immediately picked up the challenge to strive for perfection in their sport. Let us also take up the challenge of “the race that lies before us.” Let us continue our struggle and fight for the “Crown of Eternal Life.” Exercise your Faith, become strong in your duties and place in life. Be ready to do battle and be prepared “to take home the gold!” Happy Summer to all! Hopefully you are enjoying the things of the season and are enjoying some of God’s beautiful creation and also getting in a little “R & R,” which is a very good thing.
