Our confession to the solar technology

The shortage of fossil com -bust ibles worldwide, the adopti-on of the Renewable-Energy-Bill EEG and finally also the positive atti tude of users and consumers re gard ing the environmentally comp atible energy generation ini tiated in the last few years an enorm ous boom in the photo-voltaic industry.

„Nothing is more environ-ment-friendly than receiving energy directly from the sun. This is our confession to the solar tech no logy.“Siegbert Lapp – Chairman technical manage-ment board.

As an environmental-orientated com pany and one of the leading supp liers for the wind and solar industry, Lapp Kabel also wants to take part in this trend. In July 2005 the new photovoltaic plant on the roof of the logistic centrum 1 of the company headquarter in Stuttgart was inaugurated. With this we want to express our philosophy and to promote the rethinking regar-ding renewable energies.

The 1092 solar modules which are installed on a roof area of 4.500 m2 have an output of 168 kWp and nearly 160.000 kWh of energy per year.Additionally the annual saving of toxic carbon dioxide (CO2) amounts to approximately 94.000 kg.

The key data speak for themselves!

All PV-components are con-nected and installed with Lapp products like SKINTOP® cable glands, EPIC® connectors, SILVYN® conduits and LAPPTHERM® SOLAR cables – a longtime use and a safe func-tion of the photovoltaic plant is guaranteed at any season.

On the following pages we want to introduce products which were especially developed in co-operation with users from the photovoltaic branch. Let it be weather resistant cable installa-tions, safe cable entries or the interconnection of single solar

LAPPTHERM® SOLAR cables

Our LAPPTHERM® SOLAR cables are tested and certified regard ing their use in the course of national and international ap provals by our own labora tory and by independent testing institutes. Our international all-rounder LAPPTHERM® SOLAR XL multi combines for instance the TÜV type approval and further UL/CSA approvals

in just one cable. All of them are „UL-listed“ according NEC (USA/Canada). Not every UL approval suits to photovoltaic applications!

What does „UL-listed“ mean ? Some solar cables offered on the market are just „AWM-recog-nized“. This limits the use to in door electrical equipment and

The right approvals – that counts!

Energy generation by using the power of sunlight is a global issue. Photovoltaic systems are in stalled in different climatic zones all over the world. Due to the quite different environment-al conditions, especially regard-ing on the temperature- and

UV exposure, Lapp Kabel uses only high quality insulation- and outer sheath compounds for the LAPPTHERM® SOLAR product range which is manufactured ac cord ing the lat est processing tech no logy.

New methods in the cabling of solar systems

EPIC® SOLAR cabling system

EPIC® SOLAR is a new cabling system, optimized for the requirements of photovoltaic technology. EPIC® SOLAR is available as a pre-assembled and industrial injection moulded cord set with connector. It’s rugged and durable and available in numberous variations.

The field mountable connect ors are optimized for the require-ments of the installers. Simple assembly, two manageable parts minimize the possibility of mistakes in the field and the breakdown of the system.

Equipped with a SKINTOP® cable gland, which has proven its resistance for many years in millions of applications, EPIC®

SOLAR is the optimal solution in Photovoltaic-Systems.

Built in sockets, Y- Splitter, LAPPTHERM® SOLAR cables, SILVYN® cable conduits and FLEXIMARK® marking systems completes the cabling system.

EPIC® SOLAR is quickly plugged together, fast and easy, catch hooks lock the connector reliably. Based on a new turning mechanism, the connector can be unlocked by an easy turn. Unintentional interruption of the power generation is prevented in this way. The EPIC® SOLAR cabling system is continuously extended, new customer needs will become implemented.

International standards

EPIC® SOLAR has been developed according the latest international standards. The user’s safety is the main concern.

Touch protection class II and the safety requirements for connectors according IEC 61984, as well as special requirements for photovoltaic systems according DIN VDE 0126-3 are considered to the full extent.

Requirements for the use in photovoltaic systems like IEC 61215, IEC 61730 and UL 1977 and UL 1703 are complied with accordingly. The conformity to these standards will be confirmed by TÜV Rheinland and the American UL (Underwriter Laboratories Inc.).

EPIC® SOLAR cabling system pre-assembled

• The choice of best plastics with excellent UV resistance, a high degree of weather-proofing and resistance to a wide range of environmental influences makes EPIC® SOLAR extremely rugged in outdoor use

• The industrial injection over moulding technique perma-nently connects to the cable. The connector is forever inseparable and permanently connected to the cable

• All cord sets are tested. This ensures the lowest transfer resistance for maximum power transmission and a high efficiency of the power plant

• The sealing concept and the production technology offer the maximum dirt and water protection

• Two symmetrical catch eyes engage clearly. They hold EPIC® SOLAR together, pro-tecting against unintentional opening. The connector is unplugged easily by a clock-wise rotation

• Many small contact lamellas provide for the best electrical connection with lowest trans-fer resistance and thus a high plant efficiency.

Solar modules are provided with pre-assembled cord sets for a fast safety and easy assembly on site. EPIC® SOLAR is a cabling system produced by an industrial injection moulding process. The cord sets are over moulded with plastics,

absolutely leak proof, rugged and unseparable. Moisture has no chance to penetrate the connection and to affect the effi-ciency of the solar system by increasing contact resistance.

EPIC® SOLAR cabling system field mountable

• The choice of best plastics with excellent UV resistance, a high degree of weather-proofing and resistance to a wide range of environmental influences makes EPIC® SOLAR extremely rugged in outdoor use.

• The sealing concept combined with a SKINTOP® cable gland offers the maximum dirt and water protection IP68.

• The lamella claws of the SKINTOP® gland offers the highest strain relief for a safe operation in the sun and also in addition with rain and storms.

20

With the EPIC® SOLAR „field mountable“ connector the LAPP group technical designers developed a system which is proven its stability and robustness for many years in millions of applications.

The connector consists of two pre-mounted components. It will be crimped on the solar cable and the appropriate SKINTOP® gland screwed down. The sealing is pressed strongly against the cable and the lamella claw keeps the cable also with traction force in the connector. The weather and UV resistance plastic materials are optimally suitable for external use in solar plants.

1. Insert the EPIC® SOLAR connector into the locator. The product is kept safe in the crimping tool.

2. Feed in the stripped LAPPTHERM® SOLAR or similar cable type into the pre-assembled contact.

3. Press the crimping tool completely together to unlock the crimp mechanism. Take out the connector.

4. Fast screw the second component, the SKINTOP® neck.

5. Fast screw the cap nut for cable seal-ing. Now the EPIC® SOLAR connector is ready assembled for the durable transfer of Energy.

Product advantages

Assembly steps

• The pre-assembly of the EPIC® SOLAR connector reduces assembly errors by forgotten, lost or wrongly selected components.

• Two symmetrical catch eyes engage clearly. They hold EPIC® SOLAR together, pro-tecting against unintentional

opening. The connector is unplugged easily by a clock-wise rotation.

• Many small contact lamellas provide for the best electrical connection with lowest trans-fer resistance and thus a high plant efficiency.
