On this occasion of the old ZAF Board being replaced by a vibrant and young new ZAF Board, Jo Ann and I, being on the ZAF Board for the last 4 years, were blessed with the kindness, hospitality, generosity and overall goodwill of the whole ZAF Membership!

We will always remember these 4 years as one of our highlights of our lives! In that spirit, the Dastur, Hodge and Simmons families wish to express our sincere gratitude to the ZAF friends and their very hard working, forward looking, progressive new ZAF Board Members for putting our South Florida mark on the Sands of Time of North America! Thank you for giving a distinct identity to our miniscule community and wish ZAF to lead us to higher and higher Community goals and achievements.

May the Flame of Fellowship, Love, Charity and Tolerance burn ever eternal in our

ZAF Initiates Recognition of New Navar/Martabs/Mobedyars

In North America & Indian Subcontinent

We believe that the training and ordainment of young persons with origins in North America or the Indian subcontinent, leading to meet the approved standards of religious qualification as a NAVAR, MARTAB or MOBEDYAR, are absolutely critical elements and processes for the future of the Zarathushti way of life. Such initiatives are to be encouraged and supported by our community; especially in our new homeland where the Zarathushti population is growing.

In recognition of this acute need, ZAF undertook the initiative on both fronts for the years 2011 & 2012:

a) To sponsor a needy candidate on the Indian subcontinent by providing funds for training and completion of ordainment as a Navar (Approx. = $1300) or a Martab (Approx. = $600). One such candidate (Ervad Zubin Pochkhanavala, son of Kashmira and Sarosh Pochkhanavala of Pune at the Cama Baug Adariyan in Mumbai on May 24th 2011) was sponsored and has been ordained as reported in the ZAF newsletter Zor & More (Special Edition, July, 2011). Funding has been reserved for a second such candidate and the search is underway through various contacts in India.

b) To encourage and recognize person(s) of North American origin, after being ordained as Navar, Martab or Mobedyar, by a modest cash award (e.g., $501).

On September 7, 2012, the following message was received from Ervad Kobad Zarolia, President of the NAMC:

“Please convey our sincere thanks to ZAF Board and its members for donating this amount. More than the money, it is incredible that a small Anjuman like yours even thought about donating Scholarships towards the expense of a new NAVAR, Martab in NA. On behalf of all Mobeds and NAMC I thank you from bottom of my heart for making this donation.” Ervad Kobad Zarolia, President, NAMC

We wish to gratefully acknowledge the valuable input from the ZAF Board members; especially the Charity Committee (Behli Hansotia-Chair, Mina Dubash, and Katya Hansotia), and our Board member Ervad Dr. Soli Dastur for his invaluable help and guidance in this regard. The funds have been remitted to the North American Mobeds Council (NAMC), for verification of the qualifications of the ordainments and administration of the disbursements. On September 10, Ervad Solibhai wrote the following to his fellow Mobeds in North America:

“We want you all NA Mobeds to help us in recognizing such young Mobeds who are ordained Navar, Martab, or Mobedyar during 2012 - 2013. Please convey their names to Kobad Zarolia, our NAMC President”..…..”This may be the first time a small FEZANA Association has started such a noble initiative and is quite commendable.”…….”As a ZAF Board Member and an NAMC Mobed, I congratulate ZAF for such a wonderful initiative and hope that other FEZANA Associations take up such a noble cause!”

ZAF Maidhyoshem Gahambar

On Sunday, November 4th, 2012, ZAF celebrated the annual Gahambar at the Palace Restaurant hall, Davie, FL. About 85 adults and eight children attended. ZAF President Jahanbux Daruwala welcomed the congregation and introduced the host family. The event would not be possible without the thoughtful and generous contribution from our members and well-wishers, Dr. & Mrs. Darayes & Goher Mobed, Mrs. Freny Kharas and family. The ZAF community is indeed fortunate and grateful for their kindness to keep the tradition of prayer and getting together alive. Thank you from all of us!. The event began with an invitation by Ervad Soli Dastur to the hosts Daraius & Goher Mobed to come forward; with Mrs. Freny Kharas, lighting the deevo (lamp).

Son of Ahura Mazda …….may it be a Petromax…….…….or a deevo ………….. we came together with the host family

Zor & More, Issue # 4, December, 2012. Page 5 of 16

It was followed by a presentation by Ervad Dastur explaining the significance of lighting a deevo and a Hum-Bandagi (praying together) of Cheraag roshan; both reminiscent of his own home where the family lit the Petromax lamp and other lanterns every evening and prayed together after lighting them. “Cheraag roshan, Mushkel Aashaan, Muraad Haansul,

Tandoorasti, Nek Muraad Haansul” “The lamp is lit, all difficulties will be solved,

all wishes will be granted. Good health, all good wishes will be granted”

Hum-Bandagee Explanation

The Cheraag Roshan was followed by all reciting Khshnaothra Ahurahe Mazdaao, Ashem Vohu Vahistem Asti, Ushtaa Asti Ushtaa Ahmaai Hyat Ashaai Vahishtaai Ashem!... and then we greeted one another with a “saahebjee” (salute). What a simple way to recognize “Aathro Ahurahe Mazdaao Puthra”, The Fire, the son of Ahura Mazda!

Thank you Solibhai and Jo Ann for being there for the community year-after-year, month-after-month and occasion- after-occasion..…we all are deeply indebted to you! Amen!

Our Board member & Charity Committee Chair, Behli Hansotia showed a brief documentary about how the Operation-Eye-Sight, initiated by ZAF last year, is helping the needy around the world to see better. This was followed by a superb appetizer [Mongolian pakoras] and Parsi Bhonu (meal) [chicken dhaan-saak, brown rice, kachuber, veg-stew, sali-boti, & kesri chicken] served on the traditional kera-na-paatra (banana leaves) by our smiling community volunteers: Khushroo Daruwalla, Rustonm Deboo, Shahveer Dhatigara, Kaizad Hansotia, Furrokh Irani, Merzy Karanjia, Jimmy Major, Danny Mobed, Anahita & Nash Patel, Casey Raja & Burjis Shroff. Many volunteers also helped to arrange the tables, spread table-cloths and the banana leaves: The

We do also acknowledge the help of Mr. Rakesh Raina of Palace Restaurant for the full cooperation from him and his staff. No dhaan-daar is ever good without proper masalas; thanks to Hootokhshi Hansotia for helping out with a large bag-full of the authentic spices. We wish to extend our heartfelt thanks and gratitude to Daisy & Mehar Mehta for volunteering to prepare the delicious Custard for all. Without any hesitation or questions, they were ready and willing to help and bring it to the gathering.

Point slides of selected topics are sent in advance by Ervad Dastur to all pre-registered participants. On the day of the class, participants from all over North America dial-in through a toll-free tele-bridge number and listen to the presentation while following the slides on PC in their homes. Time is also allowed for limited Q&A. There have been 10 classes so far and the usual attendance has been about 100 per class. The classes are also recorded on Video U-Tube and are available on the web-link www.zoroastrians.net.

Children’s Z-Club: Under the energetic leadership of our Aban Kavasmaneck, the Z-Club continues children’s classes and cultural gatherings, meeting at different parents’ homes, approximately 8 - 10 times per year. Preservation of Avesta Script – Caligraphy Paghdi-Feta Making Happy B’Day to Nicolai The third in the series of educational DVD-Movie & lunch gathering was held at 12:30 pm, Sunday, October 14th, at the Arista Park clubhouse, Davie, FL. It was attended by 34 persons. We thank Jimmy & Farida Major for helping with the hall reservation. The theme was: “Zarathushtra’s Struggles and Preserving Our Culture”. Our Ervad Soli Dastur and Kersi Munshi worked hard on developing the selections for this showing. Each section was preceded by an introduction by Ervad Dastur:

On Wings of Fire Excerpts: Rousing introduction with the theme from 2001: A Space Odyssey conducted by Zubin Mehta, and Introduction to the film (4 minutes)

On Wings of Fire Excerpts: Zarathushtra’s Life and Struggles to Propagate His Religion (18 mins.): excerpts from this film of Zarathushtra’s life and struggles to spread his religion in the court of King Vishtaspa. The enactment of these episodes was quite good and very worthy of viewing.

Revival of Zarathushtri Culture: Introduction, setting Gathas to Western Music, Avesta script Calligraphy, Parsi Paghdi/Feta-making, and Summation (15 mins.) In 1998, Dr. Homi Dhalla founded the World Zarathushti Cultural Foundation (WZCF) to preserve Zarathushti heritage and culture. WZCF has started many projects for this preservation. We saw some of them in this viewing.

The Menu: A delicious lunch: Bhel-Puri, Chicken Biryani, Chicken Kheema, Tarka Daal, Gulab Jamum, Naan; followed by a birthday cake. We all sang a Very Happy Birthday to Nicolai Hansotia! A big vote of thanks is due to all who helped with shopping, reservations, serving and clean-up.

The Z-Club (by Aban Kavasmaneck)

As we reflect upon the blessings of Thanksgiving, we remember to be grateful to our Lord Ahura Mazda, for his wonderful gift of our children! Indeed, our Z-Club children are worthy and deserving of our admiration and praise for their hard work, active participation, and love for our community.

In September, the Z-Club children learned the meaning and significance of our Navjote prayers in preparation for our doubly precious gems, Anisa and Ariana’s Navjote. The children’s enquiring minds probed into our religion’s ethical and philosophical dimension with an amazingly mature perspective and we had a wonderful discussion on the impact of our religion on our daily lives. The meeting was hosted by Jasmine and Rustom Deboo who served a gastronomic array of Parsi and American dishes.

Then in October, we had a fabulous Halloween Party at Carol and Pallan Katgara’s house. All the Z-Club kids and their parents dressed up in some unbelievingly interesting costumes. We played games involving drawing pictures of Zoroastrian memorabilia, events, and ceremonies, and then describing their significance. Everyone had a ball, and Carol and Pallan had a banquet feast fit for our young princes and princesses, (and Kings and Queens!)

In November, the Z-Club’s annual outing was a picnic at the John Lloyd State Park/Beach by the ocean in Hollywood. Everyone brought the most fabulous food items ranging from hotdogs, chutney sandwiches, Jamaican patties, to wantons and watermelon, to name a few. The Z-Club kids and parents played games which were a tremendous hit

At this time we also thank our ZAF Board and the entire Zoroastrian community for always supporting our Z-Club. It is because of our Z-Club parents and all of you that our children shine and light up our lives with their energy and joy.

Anisa & Arina Deboo Twins Navjote

Anisa & Ariana with With the Deboo family With the Unwalla family Explaining responsibility as Ervads Perry & Rayomand Unwalla the new Zoroastrians On November 24th, the twin sisters Anisa and Ariana, daughters of the proud parents Jasmin & Rustom Deboo, had their Navjotes performed in grand style by Ervads Perry Unwalla and Rayomand Unwalla respectively, at the lovely home of the grandparents under a florally ornate white canopy, with an even brighter and cheerfully sunny afternoon in Boca Raton, FL. The occasion was graced by many relatives and guests, including a large and loving contingency from Michigan...the former home of the Deboos. The twins recited the prayers eloquently with inspiring confidence. As gracious as the sisters themselves, the parents hosted a superb reception and dinner for the ZAF community and guests at the local Yacht Club. While the children played musical chairs, the adults enjoyed the gracious hospitality of Jasmin & Rustom; followed by an absolutely beautiful and eloquent reading by the sisters about the responsibility they now have as new Zoroastrians. Our hearty congratulations and best wishes to Anisa, Ariana, Jasmin & Rustom and the very proud and loving grandparents Freny & Jimmy Deboo and Nellie & Darabsha Unwalla for their superb organization, training of the sisters and for being warm and loving hosts for all.

Perry Unwalla (in black shirt)Marathon Run: Congratulations Perry!! On December 2, I did something I never thought I’d do, run a full 26.2 mile marathon.

After 22 weeks of training and 500 miles of running, it was a truly memorable experience! The original plan was to run the NY City marathon on Nov. 4. My friend

Michael and I each raised over $3500 for charities just to gain retry into the race. It was cancelled due to the storm, Sandy. As per our plan-B, we ran the marathon of

the Palm Beaches in FL. Even though it started at 6:30 am, the temperature soon reached to 79F, too hot for a marathon and things got crazy. Cramping up at mile 13 and

all the way to the end, I had a tough time finishing, but did finish at 5 hrs. & 15 mins. At the finish the paramedics said I needed to go with them to get 2 liters of fluid! Crazy, but felt much better afterward. At the height of being overheated and miserable, out of nowhere pops our very own Maneesh Sheth, who himself is a marathoner. He found me and talked, ran, and coached me through the last 4 miles, which are the absolute hardest; he was a Godsent! Thank You Manessh for getting me through it. Regarding New York: For all who made donations to the two NYC marathon charities, we thank you again and want you know that all of it was applied immediately so it can start helping others. Thank you so much for all your support!

North American Zoroastrian Religious Tele-Class by Ervad Soli Dastur

Attendance: For Class #10: About 25 ZAF friends attended in the conference room and about 40+ people joined in by calling a Tele-meeting phone number. For Class #11 there were about 38 callers with multiple people listening together in some homes. The people were from both Canada and USA, from NY, Dallas, Los Angeles, Montreal, Toronto to Miami. The class material was a PowerPoint Presentation sent ahead of time to all participants in PDF format.

Class # 10: Sunday, September 23, 2012, 11-12 am. Topic: Parsi & Irani Wedding Ceremonies.

Place: At the kind invitation of our friends in ZAF, Miami/Ft. Lauderdale/Boca Raton and surrounding areas, this time the Tele Class was broadcasted from a conference room in Quality Inn, Sawgrass Conference Center, in Plantation, FL 33322. Coverage: This Class covered the details of the Parsi and Irani wedding ceremonies. It was pointed out that the oldest reference in our scriptures about weddings is given in his own poetic verses by none other than our own Asho Zarathushtra in his Vahishtoishti Gatha Yasna 53.3–7 at the auspicious occasion of the wedding of his youngest daughter Pouruchisti to Jamaspa Hvogava! This was followed by the coverage of the details of Parsi wedding customs and ceremonies using Roshan Bharucha and late Mrs. Perin Hormusji’s Gujarati booklets.

Zor & More, Issue # 4, December, 2012. Page 12 of 16

The Customs and Ceremonies of the Irani Weddings were then discussed. He was greatly helped by respected Dasturji Mobed Mehraban Firouzgary of Tehran and his nephew Mobed Ramin Shahzadi and his wife Mobedyar Parva Namiranian. Dasturji has been helping Soli over a long period in many subjects related to our religious practices in current Iran. He gave a detailed description of the Irani wedding and Ramin and Parva sent photos and video clips of their wedding performed by Mobed Mehraban. He expressed his deep indebtedness to them for helping with the materials for this Tele-Class. Ashirwad Prayers of Parsi and Irani wedding ceremonies were described and their meaning in English was also covered.

Agenda Slide with Discussed Topics Mobed Firouzgary, Mobed Shahzadi, Mobedyar Namiranian Irani Style Aachhu Michhu?!

Finally, as it is becoming our custom, the final prayer in English, from Dr. Dhalla’s book: Homage Unto Ahura Mazda: “Ashirvad sanctifies the union of two hearts”

was recited by all together ending with our signature Zoroastrian greeting of: “Hamaa Zor, Hamaa Asho Bade” (May we be united in righteousness) performed by all attending the Class, a cyber Hamaa Zor all over North America!

As always, the Tele-Class video has been uploaded on YouTube in 8 Segments. Our very good friend Yazdi Tantra placed them on his excellent website: www.zoroastrians.net which he graciously accomplished and here is the link for this on his website: http://zoroastrians.net/2012/09/25/20120923-all-na-z-tele-class-10-parsi-irani-weddings-on-youtube/

Class # 11: Sunday, December 2. 20112, 11-12 am. Topic: Zoroastrian Core Beliefs

Place: The class was held by Tele-conference from Hira Villa, Jo Ann & Soli’s home in University Park, FL. Coverage: This Class covered the basic Zarathushtri Religion Core Beliefs. Soli presented a 30 minute interactive discussion of the same subject at the North American Zoroastrian Congress (NAZC) held in Rye NY. He used a question/answer approach between six young Zarathushtris, three males and three females, representing the six Amesha Spentas. This class was an expanded version of this talk and covered one hour. Soli started the class off by thanking all the participants especially FEZANA President Katayun Kapadia and Vice President Homi Gandhi, who took time of their busy schedule to attend and support our Tele Classes.

The Agenda included a Unique Hum Bandagi after listening to the first part of Atash Nyayesh by our own Mobed Ervad Kobad Jamshed with the peals of the bell ringing out! This was followed by our traditional Hama Zor greeting among all participants in Cyber Space! The agenda topics are shown in the slide below: Who do we profess to be? Our Core Beliefs are the original teachings of Zarathushtra; Our basic Core Beliefs of today; Core Beliefs and Amesha Spentas! In the end, Soli pointed out how Zarathushtra wanted to work in harmony with his people to follow the Zarathushtri Religion (Hoshbam Prayer). In order to explain the origin of our Hama Zor Greeting, he explained the first few Paras of Ardafravash Afrin which teaches us to work in harmony with all Mazdayasnian Zarathushtrians.

_Editorial: by Jahanbux Daruwala_

A Retrospective View with the Future in Sight

As our term comes to a close, we must take this opportunity to do some introspection and ask what was accomplished and what implications it may have, at least in our view, for the future. At the very core of ZAF’s foundation as a not-for-profit body in 1994, was the constitutional desire of the founders and the community to be Associated as Zoroastrians in this part of Florida; with the purpose of promoting cultural, educational and social activities. Indeed that aim materialized.

As the years passed, the ZAF population grew from 40-50 homes to now over 80, bench-marking began to occur: by design, by coincidence and by the sheer fact that North American continent is the only region in the world where the number of persons of our faith is growing significantly. Beyond anecdotes, the commonly held view is that this is where the flame of the faith has a better opportunity to prosper. I vividly remember as a board member in 2005-6, that the ZAF logo contest was held and the “flame” design was chosen by a panel of relatively young ZAF persons, from amongst many other symbolically traditional designs that were presented. I remember asking the panel for their selection-rationale. They replied: “it is the flame (in Florida) that matters”… and hence, the flame was enshrined in our logo, surrounded by sun and water; so symbolic of who we are and where we live. As I write this, it just occurs to me that at ZAF’s educational DVD & lunch program in January, the title of the movie shown was “People of the Flame”… the title inspired and arrived at, by the sight and dedication of the Zarathushti people that so impressed the independent Australian Journalist (David Adams) who filmed it in Iran.

With the passing of time, as all responsible leadership entities must, it is necessary to periodically re-evaluate the purpose of our Association while keeping the core beliefs of the flame intact. As a part of this thinking, the 2009-10 Board voted to apply for the IRS tax-exemption status to enable the Association to be on sound footing and be aligned in purpose with the rest of the 27 North American Zoroastrian Associations, representing ~25,000 Zarathushtis. In this process, but not necessarily because of it, the purpose statement in the Constitution of the Association was revised, with 100% approval of the ~40 homes that responded, to incorporate the core values of charity and religious/educational pursuits that are so inherent and intertwined with the original tradition bound socio-cultural foundation. The requisite accounting, IRS and FL State registration processes were brought up-to-date. The revised Purpose statement in the Constitution now has no geographic boundary for the pursuit of the faith while preserving and enhancing the Zarathushti identity.

Since 2009, a transformation of ZAF into a multifaceted and balanced organization has been happening that is prepared to set the pace and direction for the future. It has involved and enhanced not only many of the already ongoing vibrant activities (Nowruz, Picnic, Z Club, Pateti-New-Year, Gahambar) with increasing attendance and fiscal support, but also the introduction of a number of new initiatives and “firsts” that deserve depiction with meaningful implications for our future.

As our good fortunes would have it, we are associated with the time and place when our own Ervad Soli Dastur received the R. Rivetna Outstanding Zarathushti of the Year Award in 2010. In our endeavor to bring the Florida communities together, we had a very successful joint New-Year function with sister groups of Tampa & Orlando area; and their “news” is always included in our newsletters. The all-FL Muktaad prayers were initiated with the help of the Dasturs four years ago and participation is growing. The Tele-classes by Ervad Dastur; assisted by Jo Ann Dastur have set a new standard and technical modality of spreading the knowledge of history & religion to the North American audiences. Educational DVD-Movie with luncheon was introduced two years ago that has become a favorite forum for socializing while being “educated” about our history and culture.

Very symbolic of the desire to belong and support, almost all of the ZAF’s quarterly Newsletters (Zor & More) are fully funded with sponsorships, goodwill messages and “ads” by our readers. As one member said, we may not attend all functions, but we are happy to know that ZAF is there and belong to something that we care about.

The increasing generosity of our community in the last four years reached a point where during the last year, a Charity Committee was formed and guideline was established to systematically review various charitable initiatives in a responsible and balanced manner; while assuring that the next Board inherits more than what we started with. For the first time in ZAF’s history, we have been in a position to proactively ask what ZAF can do for others and delivered the same, consistent with the very essence of charity, one of the core Zarathushti values. The charitable initiatives have reached multifaceted purposes, such as those for: Iranshah, Surat Panchayat, Parsi General Hospital, sponsoring Navars/Martab candidates, critical assistance, food for poor Parsis in Gujarat and non-Zoroastrian causes; such as, feeding the hungry at Thanksgiving & Doctors Without Borders. Non-cash drives; such as, the used eye-glass collection and shoes for the poor have also been successfully initiated.

None of these could have been done without you, the people of ZAF. You have helped to place our tiny community in this part of America on the national map; while striving to enhance the traditions and the Zarathushti way of life. We wish that Ahura Mazda grants to this small, but precious collection of Humdins (those who share the faith), the wisdom, courage and good fortune to flourish and prosper following the legacy of Asho Zarathushtra.

On a very personal note

The experience of having had the privilege to be associated with the Board members and serving the community has been a rewarding one. The dedication, help and teamwork have been the driving and inspirational forces; not only within the Board, but more importantly, for the results that have been collectively achieved for ZAF; may they be in the realm of good governance, social events, religious pursuits, charity, or enhancing connections with our North American Zoroastrian community at-large. We fervently hope that the efforts have, in some small way, left a positive and lasting legacy for the community and its future Boards in Florida and beyond. As I depart company as a formal Board member, Nancy joins me in sincerely thanking the Board, their spouses and the community from the bottom of our hearts. The friendships built shall go beyond the term of office.
