Education System Is it Producing Leaders or Followers

From the perspective of Namit Sinha

Methodologyof

our education system1. Teach 2. Test 3. Mark

Drawbacks of our

education system• Getting high marks is the only positive feedback you

can get.

• Rote learning where

History = learning Dates…

Language = learning Poems…

Math = learning formulas.

Our Teaching Methods are boring

What our system is doing is creating

Blind Followers • Most of them are trained to follow orders

• Get a decent 9 – 5 Job

• Still India manages to become 3rd largest base for

startups in the world in 2015

How we are trying to abate the problems

• Use of Audiovisual aids in classroom

• Focus more on teaching practical knowledge

• Use of Internet

• Use of MOOC’s (coursera , nptel , eDx)

• Live lectures streaming on Youtube.

How we are trying to abate the problems

No

they are not going to work !

This will revolutionize education

• Nothing has been said that often and as incorrectly

as that sentence.

“ Motion picture would revolutionize education ”

In 1922 Edison said

Then Came The Radio• In 1930’s there was radio which was destined to

revolutionize education

Then Came The Radio• In 1930’s there was radio which was destined to

revolutionize education

But it too Failed to produce any

Quantifiable results

Finally Came the internet • In 1980’s computers were the revolutionary solution

to our educational problems.

• Researchers suspected that if we taught kids to

program , say “how to move a turtle on the screen”

it would improve their problem solving and

reasoning skills.

Finally Came the internet • The children’s became good at programming the

turtle but their reasoning and problem solving skills

remained the same.

• We still did not learnt from failures of our past

predictions.

What does a revolution looks likeAt least not like this

1960’s 2015’s

What about Audio/Visuals• Do animations help better to understand a topic as

compared to a static ?

• Does a video promote learning better than a book?

• Are live lectures more effective than televised

lectures ?

What about Audio/Visuals

No Significant difference

Why do we need Teachers101001001...Information

Why do we need Teachers• Fundamental role of a teacher is not to deliver

information .

• It is to guide

To inspire To ExciteTo challenge

Their student to want to learn

Technology does helpin the process of

learning But using Technology is at best a evolution

Not a revolution

The most important gear in the clock of learning is the teacher who inspires the students To learn instead of scaring them by bombarding information
