ЗБИРАННЯ ДРУЖБИ НА КАВУ

Ласкаво Запрошуємо всіх після Служби Божої до парафіяльної залі на солодощі, каву і товариство. Так відбуватиметься кожної неділі після Святої Літургії, якщо не буде якихось поминальних чи парафіяльних обідів. Дякуємо всім тим хто готував, або буде готувати цю перекуску.

Нам Потрібні Добровольці для приготування кави і перекуски після Служби Божої. На стіні біля кухні є листок для

реєстрації бажаючих. Чоловіки та жінки можуть брати участь у цій важливій справі, оскільки це надає можливість всім членам парафії збиратися разом і мати добрий час. Сестрицтво має в наявності тарілки, чашки, столові прилади та серветки. Ми також забезпечуємо каву, чай, вершки, цукор та масло. Добровольцям не потрібно приносити ці речі.

СОБОР СВЯТОГО АРХИСТРАТИГА МИХАЇЛА

Наш церковний рік це наче прегкрасна мозаїка, яку творять Господські, Богородичні свята та велика кількість свят мучеників і святих. Осередок цієї величної мозаїки — це Господь Наш Ісус Христос, як Бог і як Чоловік. На землі день і ніч славить Його Церква-паломниця, а в небі вічну славу співає Йому Церква прославлена: превеликий хор ангелів і святих. Святі ангели це одвічний Божий хор слави, це Божа сторожа і Божі слуги. Ангели сповняють також велику роль у відкупленні людського роду.

Перш ніж Господь Бог схотів створити людину, Він спочатку створив ангелів. Це невидимі, безсмертні, дуже досконалі і чисті духи, які мають бистрий розум і свобідну волю, їхня кількість безмірно велика. Пророк Даниїл бачив у видінні престол Бога, де "тисячі тисяч йому служили, і силенна безліч перед Ним стояла" (7, 10). А святий Йоан Богослов у Книзі Одкровення каже: "Потім я бачив, і чув голос ангелів багатьох навколо престола, і істот і старших; і було число їх — множини множин і тисячі тисяч" (5, 11). Сам Ісус Христос говорить у святому Євангелії про легіони ангелів (Мт. 26, 53).

Від Псевдо-Діонісія Ареопагіта (V ст. ) в Церкві започатковано звичай ділити всіх ангелів на три чини, по три хори кожний, тобто разом дев'ять ангельських хорів: серафими, херувими і престоли; господства, власті і сили; начала, архангели й ангели.

Господь Бог після створення ангелів схотів їх випробувати й тоді велика частина їх збунтувалася проти Нього. Святий Йоан Богослов говорить про війну на небі (Од. 12, 7). На чолі добрих ангелів став архангел Михаїл і переміг Люципера і його ангелів. Через це свята Церква, коли почитає ангелів, то ставить святого архангела Михаїла на першому місці.

Святі ангели мають подвійне завдання: щодо Господа Бога і людей. Головне завдання ангелів у небі — це вічно прославляти Господа Бога.

Стосовно людей ангели з волі Божої є нашими опікунами й хоронителями. На основі Святого Письма святі Отці вчать, що не тільки кожна людина, але й кожна громада, Церква й народ мають свого ангела-хоронителя.

Святкуємо Собор святого архангела Михаїла в листопаді, бо колись давно, рік починався з березня. Тоді цей місяць був дев'ятим у році, тож має символічне відношення до дев'яти ангельських хорів.

Головна мета свята — звеличити і прославити святого архангела Михаїла, а з ним й инших ангелів. Прославляють його тому, що в обороні Божої чести він став на чолі добрих ангелів, коли бунтував сатана. Звідси і його почесний титул архистратига, що з грецької значить "начальний вождь". З тієї причини й іконографія представляє його як озброєного полководця: шолом на голові, вогненний меч у руках, а під ногами в'ється змій — символ сатани.

Богослуження цього дня оспівує велич відзначення святого Михаїла перед Божим троном, його ревність і вірність Богові та опіку й заступництво за нас. Ось деякі похвальні строфи зі стихир вечірні й утрені: "Ангельських хорів, воєводо", "Воєвода вишніх сил, Михаїл начальний вождь божественних чинів", "Михаїл архистратиг вишніх сил", "Ти перший поміж безплотними ангелами", "Ти воєвода й поборник, і ангелів начальний вождь, Архистратиже", "Посеред полків ангельських ти найстарший", "Для християн ти спасенний заступник", "Михаїле Архистратиже, тебе оспівуємо вірно як сильного заступника, охоронця і визвольника лю дей". У дні свого свята він усіх нас взиває до спільного собору-зібрання з ангелами, щоб віддати належну славу Богові: "Як верховний вождь небесних божественних сил, (Михаїл) днесь скликає людські хори, щоб один світлий празник з ангелами укласти, празник їхнього собору божественного, і разом Богові трисвяту пісню заспівати" (Стихира хвальна)

.

ВЕЛИКОМУЧЕНИК ДИМИТРІЙ СОЛУНСЬКИЙ

Святий Великомученик Димитрій народився в Греції, в місті Солунь в четвертому столітті. Походив з багатої віруючої в Христа родини, де батько був проконсулом – начальником області. Після народження сина батьки одразу охрестили хлопця в домашньому храмі, і прагнули виховувати його в дусі християнської побожності та смирення. Юнак дійсно, виріс розумний та побожний. Не дивно, що після смерті батька саме Димитрію випав жереб продовжити його працю.

Однак, не варто забувати, що це був час неймовірних гонінь на правдиву віру. Окрім того, що в обов’язки проконсула входив захист області від зовнішніх ворогів, імператор-поганин Максиміан вимагав від усіх своїх ставлеників ще й рішучого викорінення християнської віри. Безперечно, йому швидко донесли про те, що проконсул в Солуні є ревним християнином. Повертаючись із чергового походу проти сарматів Максиміан побажав зупинитись у місті. Для Димитрія, у випадку впертої непокори, це означало безумовну смерть. Не бажаючи зрадити Ісуса Христа, молодий проконсул заздалегідь роздав усе своє майно бідним, після чого, в молитві та пості чекав смерті. Так і сталося. Озвірілі вояки спочатку кинули Димитрія у в’язницю, а потім за наказом імператора знущались, поки не вбили його. Вони проколювали тіло великомученика гострими списами, вимагаючи зречення від Бога, але як мужній воїн Христовий він не зрадив віри батьків. Уже мертве тіло Димитрія вояки кинули звірям, але християни Солуні таємно викрали та поховали його.

За давнім християнським переданням вже закривавлені ризи та перстень мученика мали чудотворну властивість зцілювати хворих. Імператор-християнин Костянтин Великий на могилі Димитрія побудував храм, а згодом там було віднайдено і святі нетлінні мощі великомученика. До речі, нині базиліка св. Димитрія перебуває під охороною ЮНЕСКО, як історична архітектурна цінність. Неймовірна кількість зцілень від мощів святого продовжується і до нашого часу. З VII ст. з раки із мощами святого почало витікати чудотворне миро. За те, що святий Димитрій переніс перед смертю неймовірні

страждання, Церква називає його Великомучеником. А за те, що його святі мощі й до цього дня виточують чудотворне миро, Димитрія називають також Мироточивим. Дар чудес, нетлінність тіла та мироточивість стають джерелом великого й широкого культу св. Дмитра не лише в Греції, але й по цілій Слов`янській землі. До його гробу з року в рік з усіх країв йдуть сотні й тисячі паломників. Він допомагає в кожній біді та потребі. Воїни обирають його за свого опікуна і покровителя.

На наших землях вшанування цього святого прийшло одночасно з хрещенням Руси-України. Тут було зведено чимало церков та монастирів на честь святого Димитрія. Традиційно пам’ять святого Димитрія Солунського пов’язана з подвигом воїнів, патріотизмом і захистом рідної землі. Захисту святих завжди потребували князі, воїни і мандрівники, які виїжджали в дорогу або ішли на війну, тому часто віддавали себе св. Димитрієві під опіку. Свої перемоги українські полководці пояснювали саме небесним покровительством цього святого.

ЦЕРКОВНА ЗАПИСКА (ГРАМАТКА).

Це особлива книжечка, куди записують імена живих і померлих, і яка подається під час богослужіння з метою поминання. Ці книжечки помя’нників можна придбати у нашому храмі.

Пам’ятайте: поняття "здоров'я" включає не лише фізичний стан людини, але і його духовний стан і матеріальне благополуччя. До записки слід записати всіх, кому ми бажаємо здоров'я, порятунку і добробуту. Адже Слово Боже вчить, що кожному необхідно молитися не тільки за себе, але й за інших: "моліться один за одного". На цій спільній молитві «один за одного» і вибудовується Церква.

Пишуться імена батьків, своє ім'я, імена членів своєї родини, близьких і рідних. Кожен повинен молитися про здоров'я та благополуччя своєї родини .

Друга записка, яка подається нами, - "За спокій". У ній ми пишемо імена померлих родичів, знайомих, вчителів, доброзичливців, всіх, хто нам дорогі.

Як ми молимося про живих, так повинні молитися і за померлих - і не тільки за найближчих родичів, але й за увесь свій рід, за всіх, хто зробив нам добро в земному житті, допоміг або навчив. Померлі, хоча й відійшли від нас, хоча й перебувають плоттю в землі, а душею у Господа, не зникли, а продовжують жити невидимим для нас духовним життям перед очима Божими

Після прочитання кожного імені, зазначеного в записці, священнослужитель виймає частку просфори, говорячи: нехай згадає, Господь і вказує написане нами ім'я. Потім усі записки складаються в храмі у певному місці (дискосі). Це велике й святе місце! Частинки, що лежать в своєму порядку на церковному дискосі, символізують всю нашу Церкву Христову. Ось чому необхідно здійснювати поминання живих і померлих саме в Церкві, під час літургії - адже саме тут відбувається очищення Кров’ю Христовою вчинених нами щоденних гріхів. Жертва, принесена Господом нашим Ісусом Христом на Голгофі і щодня під час літургії що приноситься на святому Престолі, є повною і вичерпної платою за наш борг Богу. І лише вона, подібно до вогню, може спопелити в людині всі її гріхи.

Обов'язково потрібно подавати записку за здоров’я в дні народження і хрещення вашої дитини. За цим повинні ретельно стежити матері, бо турбота про дитину - святий борг.

Записки треба подавати до початку Літургії.

Вписуючи імена живих і померлих, пам'ятайте процес написання має йти від щирого серця. Записка повинна містити не більше десяти імен. Якщо ви хочете згадати багатьох своїх рідних і близьких - подайте декілька записок. Імена повинні бути написані в родовому відмінку (відповідати на запитання "кого?"). Крім того, всі імена повинні бути подані у церковному написанні і повністю (наприклад Олександра, Миколи, але не Саші, Колі). В записках не вказуються

прізвища, по батькові, звання і титули, не наголошується ваша спорідненість (брат, сват, кум…). Дитина до 7 років у записці згадується як немовля - немовляти Іоанна.

І нарешті, у записках "За упокій" покійний протягом 40 днів після смерті іменується як "новоспочилий". Допускається в записках "За упокій" написання перед іменем "убитий", "воїн", (день смерті, день іменин покійного).

This month we are focusing on gathering food and money for the Food Shelters. The boxes will be located in front of the Bulletin Board in the hallway. Please follow instructions below for the food donations. If you prefer to donate money, there will be a collection at the coffee hour. We will also be gathering toys for a Christmas toy campaign. There will also be a box by the Bulletin Board.

Please donate only non-perishable food such as canned goods or boxed staples such as rice, noodles, cereals, etc. All Food

Should Be Within the Expiration Dates Otherwise It Will Be Thrown Away.

Clothing Should Be Either New or Gently Used. Currently we are collecting spring and summer clothing. You can also donate linens and household supplies. YOUR SUPPORT IS GREATLY APPRECIATED.

ST. MICHAEL’S NAME DAY CELEBRATION

On Sunday, November 18th, we will be celebrating our parish’s Name day. There will be Great Vespers on Saturday at 4:00 and Divine Liturgy at 10:00 on Sunday. After Liturgy, there will be a banquet and a short program. Everyone is encouraged to participate on the special occasion.

ST. OLGA’S SISTERHOOD

Starting in November, the Sisterhood will hold its meeting every FIRST (1st) SUNDAY OF THE MONTH AT 12:30 P.M. AFTER LITURGY IN THE CHURCH HALL.

If you are not currently a member, please consider joining us for fellowship with people you have grown up with, fun and working together for the parish that provided our parents and us as youths with sustenance, fellowship, and a relationship with the Ukrainian Orthodox church.

The Sisterhood and Brotherhood will be sponsoring a Friendship Evening on Friday, November 30, 2018. Everyone is invited to meet old friends, catch up on events and just have a good time. Bring your children if you wish – they are also having a great time.

ARTS AND CRAFTS FAIR

On December 15th, 2018, we are sponsoring an Arts and Crafts Fair in our parish. Local artists, jewelry, embroidery, pottery and crafts will be featured.

Thanks to our hostesses, Helen Regan and Jackie Pawluk, we enjoyed bratwurst, hog dogs sauerkraut, spaetzle, potato salad and delicious deserts. FELLOWSHIP COFFEE HOUR –

Everyone is invited to the church hall each Sunday after Liturgy for refreshments and fellowship with exception on the Sundays when memorial services or church dinners are planned. If you want to volunteer to host a coffee hour you may sign up on the chart by the kitchen in the Parish Hall. Many thanks to those who have volunteered in the past and to those who will volunteer to host future coffee hours.

We need volunteers to man and prepare the Coffee hour after the services. Men and women can both participate in volunteering for this very important service, since it provides fellowship for all parish members to get together and share with each other.

Sisterhood will provide plates, cups, flatware and napkins. We are also providing coffee, tea, cream and sugar and butter. Volunteers do not need to provide these items

THE MEMORIAL BOOKLET (GRAMATKA).

This particular book, records the names of the living and the dead, and is given before the service for the purpose of praying for our loved ones. These booklets can be purchased at the church

Remember: the concept of "health" includes not only the physical condition of man, but also his spiritual condition and material well-being. The booklet should record all to whom we wish health, release from troubles and welfare, because the Word of God teaches that each one of us needs to pray not only for

ourselves but also for others: "pray for one another." This joint prayer "one by one" builds up the Church. One should include the names of parents, their own name, the names of the members of your family, loved ones and relatives. Everyone should pray for the health and well-being of your family.

The second booklet commemorates those who have passed away and prays for their peace. In it we write the names of dead relatives, friends, teachers, well-wishers, all who are dear to us.

As we pray for the living so do we need to pray for the dead – and not only for immediate family members, but also for all those who were dear to us, for humanity, for all who helped us or taught us. The dead, even though they are no longer with us are part of the Community of God and continue the invisible, for us, spiritual life before the eyes of God.

After reading each name specified in a booklet, the priest takes out a fraction of the prosfora, saying: “let the Lord remember and the written name”. Then all prosfory are placed in the sanctuary in the diskos, which is a great and holy place! The particles that are on the holy diskos, symbolize our entire Church of Christ.

This is why it is necessary to memorialize the living and the dead, in the Church during the liturgy-it is here that Christ's Blood cleanses us of daily sins. The sacrifice of our Lord Jesus Christ on Calvary and daily, during a liturgy, is transfigured on the altar, and completely and sufficiently pays our debt to God for our sins. And only it, like fire, can cleanse a person all their sins.

Be sure to include the names of your children on the days of the birth and baptism as a prayer for their health. This should be carefully monitored the mother - for taking care of the child is a holy duty.

NOTE: You must submit the Booklets before the beginning of the liturgy.

When writing, the names of the living and the dead should come from the heart. The booklet should contain no more than ten names. If you want to include more relatives and friends-please submit a few booklets. Names should be written in the genitive

case (answer to the question "who?"). In addition, all names must be submitted in writing and with their full Christian name (for example, Alexander, Nicholas, but not Sasha, Kolya). In the booklets do not indicate the surname and patronymic names, ranks and titles, or their relationship to you. Children up to 7 years in the booklet are referred to as baby- “baby John”.

And finally, in the booklet for the 40th day memorial of a newly deceased after his death, it is allowed to include the way they passed before the name - "killed", "warrior"- and the day of the their death and birth.

FEAST OF ST. ARCHANGEL MICHAEL

We celebrate the glorious feast of the lightning-like Archangel Michael and all the heavenly bodiless powers. Let us talk of the boundless world of the angels; of their nature, of their hierarchy, and of the infinite mercy of God which has added us, Orthodox Christians, to this angelic host and has a formed a single Church made of angels and men; and subsequently of our responsibility to venerate them in a worthy manner and try to emulate them as our future compatriots in the celestial homeland; for which we earnestly pray to God, our common Creator.

St. Cyril of Alexandria says: If our earth, which serves as a focal point between two worlds, carries upon itself such a countless multitude of people and various other creatures, then how many times greater is the number of denizens inhabiting the immaterial heaven, which is so immense and incomprehensible to the mind?

The angels have a spiritual, immaterial, subtle, and immortal nature, free of all corruptibility, but limited, not like that of the Lord Himself, the Spirit – existing everywhere and unique, without beginning and all-encompassing. He brought forth the angels from nothingness into being, sanctified them with His word, and for their steadfastness against evil confirmed them in the Holy Spirit (i.e. they can no longer fall into sin); their nature is full of wondrous, ever-shining light, holiness, goodness, beauty, wisdom, power, immortality, and an ardent love for their Creator, for each other, and for mankind, over whose salvation they rejoice, and whom they wish to have as their eternal compatriots in the kingdom of eternal light and incorruptibility,

peace and joy. St. Dionysius the Areopagite, a disciple of the Apostle Paul who had been raised by the Holy Spirit to the third heaven, heard from him the mysterious teaching on the angelic world, recorded it, and passed it on to the Church.

The angelic world is divided into nine orders, and these are divided into three ranks each. The leading radiant angels (Michael and Gabriel), as the shining dawn of the Most-holy Trinity, stand directly before the fiery throne of God, are illuminated by His light, and pass on the illumination and the knowledge of God’s mysteries to the lower ranks, and the lower ranks are ruled by the higher ones. This heavenly citizenry, this universal, holy, radiant, and blessed assembly of celestial denizens is known as the heavenly hierarchy.

Let us contemplate with wonder God’s all-benevolent and wise providence, His immeasurable bounty, which has destined us for eternal co-habitation and bliss with the angels in our future homeland, and which established a single Church composed of radiant and incorruptible angels, and chosen and worthy humans. What humanly indescribable bliss awaits Christians who are loyal to God, if they remain true to their Christian calling to the very end. In order for us to be worthy of eternal co-existence and blissful life with the angels in heaven, we must honor them, follow their example of holiness, modesty, love, absolute loyalty to God, and loftiness of thought; and we must live in abstinence, prayer, fasting, charity, compassion for one another, and ardent mutual love.

The holy divinely-inspired observers of God’s mysteries and angelic visions – the prophets and the evangelists – saw the angels constantly turning to one another and with one accord singing the praises of the Holy Trinity. This teaches us, too, to treat each other with ardent love and to live in concord, earnestly serving our mutual Creator.

Glory to God’s immeasurable bounty, which prepared for us an eternal kingdom, a kingdom of radiant light, peace, and immovable bliss, together with the countless hosts of angels!

ECUMENICAL PATRIARCHATE THE ECUMENICAL THRONE AND THE CHURCH OF UKRAINE - THE

DOCUMENTS SPEAK

At its formal session on April 20, 2018, His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew and the Holy and Sacred Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople voted to proceed with taking the necessary steps for granting autocephaly to the Orthodox Christians of Ukraine.

Various opinions have been formulated—even by representatives of official institutions—expressing misgiving about the canonical prerogative of the Church of Constantinople to proceed with such an act. The principal argument proposed in this regard is that Ukraine “constitutes the canonical territory of the Patriarchate of Moscow” and that, consequently, such an act on the part of the Ecumenical Patriarchate would comprise an “intervention” into a foreign ecclesiastical jurisdiction.

This decision was made after extensive study and discussion based on the responsibilities and rights of the Ecumenical Patriarchate as enumerated by the sacred canons, and the historical reality that in 1589 when the Church of Russia received its status as a patriarchate from the Ecumenical Patriarch, the Metropolis of Kiev, the capital of Ukraine, was not included but remained under the jurisdiction of Constantinople. Additionally, within the Patriarchal and Synodic “Praxis” (act) of 1686 there is further affirmation that the Ukraine remained under the

Ecumenical Patriarchate.

The historical reasons in support of the Ecumenical Patriarchate’s involvement in seeking a canonical resolution to the ecclesiastical anomaly in Ukraine have been analyzed and elaborated in a number of places:

As is generally known, the Ukrainians—and, indeed, all descendant people of the ancient Rus’—owe their Christian faith and Orthodox roots to the Ecumenical Patriarchate. The

Ecumenical Patriarchate constitutes the mother Church of the entire Ukrainian people—just as it does for all Russians, Belarusians and other peoples in the broader region.

The Metropolis of Russia is recorded in the ancient official charters of the Patriarchate of Constantinople, as the sixtieth eparchy of the Ecumenical Throne. Originally, it was united under the name “Kyiv and all Russia,” with Kyiv as its see.

Following the elevation of the Metropolis of Moscow to the status of Patriarchate by Ecumenical Patriarch Jeremiah II (1589), the Metropolis of Kyiv continued to function under successive Ecumenical Patriarchs, who exercised a supervisory role either through their delegated Exarchs or else personally.

When in 1654, under the reign of Peter and Katherine, Ukraine was conquered by Russia, the matter of the ecclesiastical integration of this region with the Patriarchate of Moscow also began to be raised. Nevertheless, the 6 metropolitans, bishops, clergy, nobility and all the people of Ukraine intensely rejected this integration. Even the efforts of Russia in 1684 to acquire the Metropolis of Kyiv from Ecumenical Patriarch Iakovos proved futile.

In 1685 Gideon was convinced to accept ordination by Patriarch Joachim of Moscow. This action of the Patriarch of Moscow constituted a grave canonical offence. The elevation to metropolitan of a bishop belonging to a foreign eparchy, without the consent of the local patriarch, is a violation of the sacred canons.

By ordaining Ukrainian metropolitans, Moscow, for all purposes, annexed the independent Ukrainian eparchy as part of their eparchy. The seizure of a foreign eparchy is explicitly condemned as a violation of the ancient prerogatives of Churches in the canons.

The subjection of the Metropolis of Kyiv occurred “in a manner of acquiescence” because of specific historical circumstances of that period. At that time, Ukraine was occupied by Moscow and the Ecumenical Patriarchy was also going through turmoil.

As gleaned from the Patriarchal and Synodal “Act” of 1686, the meaning of the “subjection” of the Metropolis of Kyiv to the Patriarch of Moscow essentially lay only in the permission to ordain the Metropolitan of Kyiv: that the Patriarch of Moscow can ordain the Metropolitan of Kyiv in the name of the Ecumenical Patriarch alone, and requires every Metropolitan of Kyiv to commemorate the Patriarch of Constantinople “among the first” in the Divine Liturgy.

This act was considered to be temporary until circumstances changed The permission granted to the Patriarch of Moscow to ordain the Metropolitan of Kyiv and only him, after the latter is elected by the clergy and laity of the Eparchy of Kyiv, implies a significant degree of autonomy and self-sufficiency for the Ukrainian eparchy… Moreover, this autonomy is not granted by the Patriarch of Moscow as the supposed overlord of this region in question, but rather the Patriarch of Moscow is compelled to accept this as a condition stipulated by the Ecumenical Patriarch and which the Patriarch of Moscow is obliged to respect.

The requirement for every Metropolitan of Kyiv to commemorate “among the first” during the Divine Liturgy the name of the Ecumenical Patriarch constitutes the clearest evidence that the Eparchy of Kyiv was not granted to the Patriarchate of Moscow as its canonical territory.

What occurred after 1686 is well known. The Patriarchate of Moscow never adhered to the conditions of the Patriarchal and Synodal “Act” either with regard to the manner of election of the Metropolitan of Kyiv (by the clergy and laity of that region) or again with regard to the commemoration “among the first” of the name of the Ecumenical Patriarch by each Metropolitan of Kyiv during the Divine Liturgy.

In this way, but especially through the autocratic abolition of the commemoration of the Ecumenical Patriarch by each Metropolitan of Kyiv, the de jure dependence of the Metropolis of Kyiv (and the Church of Ukraine) on the Ecumenical Patriarchate was arbitrarily rendered an annexation and amalgamation of Ukraine to the Patriarchate of Moscow. The Ecumenical Patriarchate was always aware of this despite the fact that, “on account of the

circumstances of the time”, it tolerated the arbitrary actions by the Patriarchate of Moscow.

The Ecumenical Patriarchate never ceded the Metropolis of Kyiv in order for this to constitute the canonical territory of the Patriarchate of Moscow. The Metropolis of Kyiv is not contained within these boundaries.

The permission for the Patriarch of Moscow to ordain the Metropolitan of Kyiv was granted “for the present need… this permission involved a temporary character and was enforceable so long as the reasons for which it was granted still prevailed.

The Patriarchate of Moscow knew all this, of course, which is why it arbitrarily violated these conditions and never adhered to them precisely because it sought to capriciously incorporate the Metropolis of Kyiv (and Ukraine) into its canonical jurisdiction. Failure to adhere to the terms of any Act renders this Act invalid in its entirety.

Therefore, the Ecumenical Patriarchate is entitled and obliged to assume the appropriate maternal care for the Church of Ukraine in every situation where this is deemed necessary.

ARCHBISHOP DANIEL ORDAINS DEACON IVAN TCHOPKO TO THE

HOLY PRIESTHOOD

Deacon Ivan Tchopko will be answering an even deeper inner calling and embarking on a life-long journey; for His Eminence Archbishop Daniel, spiritual father of the Western Eparchy of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA will be ordaining him to the Holy Priesthood.

His Eminence Archbishop Daniel explained that today, witnessing the ordination of Deacon Ivan, we are to remember that we all are called to the priesthood. Each of us has a calling. While we are not all called to be priests in the Church, we are all nonetheless, called to be priests in our lives and help those around us. Anointed at our Chrismation we too have a responsibility and a role to play in life. Whether we toil in the kitchen, cooking, cleaning, so others can enjoy a meal; or

whether we build things, or simply listen to others, we all have a vital role to play in the life of the Church and the world. We are all called to be the Light of Christ and to bring that Light to the darkened society.

His Eminence continued later, once ordained to the priesthood, Father Ivan will be able to administer all the Sacraments, starting today with the Eucharist. Vladyka encouraged those present to partake of Communion as often as they possibly can. While many people claim that going to Communion once or twice a year will suffice, Vladyka stated that the benefit we reap from partaking of the Body and Blood of Christ is beyond explanation, and encouraged everyone to partake as often as possible. He asked that we do not deprive ourselves, or ignore the Lord when He offers us His Gifts. Vladyka continued by asking how a wife would feel if she cooked all day to prepare dinner for her family. Having set the table and lit the candles, she eagerly awaited the arrival of her loved ones. However, when they entered through the door they decided they weren’t hungry, or aid they would come down later. How must she feel? How does God feel when we reject His Gifts?

Dwelling on their hierarch’s words, the faithful watched as Deacon Ivan censed the icons one last time as a deacon. In preparation of the Great Entrance, the Aer which is the outermost cloth that covers the Chalice and Diskos, was removed and placed atop Deacon Ivan’s head as he exited the Altar, walked past the faithful and stood at the back of the church with his head covered. The Aer represents the swaddling clothes of the Christ Child, and later His burial shroud. The Gifts are covered by the Aer in preparation for the Mystical Sacrament of the Eucharist, and as such, the Deacon Ivan, a candidate for the holy priesthood, stood covered by the same veil that had just been covering the Gifts, in order to signify that he offers his life to the service of the Holy Mysteries of the Body and Blood of Christ.

At the conclusion of the Great Entrance, two deacons exited the Altar and taking Deacon Ivan by the elbows, they lead him forward to the Altar. Stopping to make three prostrations along the way, Deacon Ivan finally arrived at the Royal Gates, where his escorts pronounced, “Command! Holy Master, bless him who

is before thee.” With these words the Aer was removed and placed once again over the Gifts which rest on the Altar Table, as the candidate was led around the table three times by priests, stopping to kiss each corner. As they reached the Northwest corner, Deacon Ivan kneeled before the sitting Archbishop and kissed his Epigonation/Palitza, which is the diamond shaped cloth that hangs from his right hip, and denotes him as a "soldier" of Christ, and symbolizes the Word of God, fighting the wiles of the enemy.

With three rotations completed, Deacon Ivan kneeled at the Southwest corner of the Altar table leaning his head upon his hands which rested on the table. Vladyka Daniel covered his head with his Epitrachelion and his right hand, as he read the Prayers of Cheirotonia over him. He then raised up Father Ivan and presented him at the Royal Gates to the faithful, exclaiming “Axios”, which means “worthy”. The hierarch then removed the deacon’s stole and presenting each item of the priestly vestments to the faithful proclaiming “Axios” and vested the new priest who was then presented to the public as Father Ivan. Vladyka explained that when single men are ordained their flocks become their families. Therefore, he asked that we all remember Fr. Ivan and all the clergy in our prayers, that Lord will guide them, protect them and bless them to carry out His work.

As the Liturgy continued, the newly ordained Father Ivan now picked up the Aer that had just covered his head, and waved it over the Gifts as His Eminence prayed with head bowed during the Creed. Thus the Divine Liturgy continued with the new priest shining in his new white vestments leading the way, supported by the senior clergy.

Unseen by most of the faithful, a very poignant moment took place as following the consecration of the Holy Gifts, the Archbishop called the new Priest to the front of the Altar and handed him the consecrated Lamb saying: “Receive thou this pledge, and preserve it whole and unharmed until thy last breath, because thou shalt be held to an accounting therefore in the Second and Awesome Coming of our Great Lord, God, and Savior, Jesus Christ.”
