For many of the people affected by Irma, a meal, a tarp, some water, clothing and toiletries are luxuries

of the times – and spirited bands of Marco YMCa volunteers continue weeks later to provide supplies to ease their recovery. through this natural disaster, the greater Marco Family YMCa found new meaning for its recently launched initiative – togetherhood – by helping storm victims not only in east Naples and on Marco, but also in goodland and farther afield in everglades City.Within two days of Irma blowing through the region, board member allyson Richards and volunteer leaders such as lorraine Corva went door to door in the lake Park and auto Ranch Roads section of east Naples where some of the county’s most economically-vulnerable residents live.

“We distributed food door to door for two weeks,” Richards said. “We gathered supplies from [people and organizations] including the Marco Island Police Department, the Marco Patriots, Our Daily Bread Food Pantry, the american Red Cross and the salvation army.

On top of these mercy missions to neighborhoods traditionally served by the Y, Richards and teams of helpers, which included many Y instructors, found themselves drawn

to goodland and everglades City to do the same thing. among the many volunteers were Joan Pernice, Michelle Jordan, terese glaser and Nancy Phillips, just to recognize a few.

“In everglades City we helped set up a pantry,” she said. “We took water to goodland and food, toilet paper and water to the over-55 Westwind mobile home community off U.s.41.”

“this is where the community comes together with the whole relief effort and cleanup,

helping our families in need,” says Y CeO Cindy love.

Quick to resume its afterschool educational programs at three off-campus sites in Collier County, the Marco Y has been working hard to create a sense of normalcy for kids and families who were severely affected by Irma.

the sites, at Manatee and Parkside elementary schools, as well as in everglades City, all cater to lower income families.

Charlene garcia, the Y’s school age Manager, was astonished at how many parents – most of whom live in the hard-hit east Naples area between U.s.41 and Collier Boulevard – declined help by saying there were people who needed it more.

the Y youth programs are a hub for offering free cases of water, fruit and food packs to families most affected by Irma. this is all thanks to community partnerships with Meals of Hope, United Way, the Community Foundation of Collier County, st. Matthews House, Habitat for Humanity and the

Naples Children & education Foundation (NCeF) who are regularly bringing supplies to the Marco Y for distribution.

garcia herself lives in the area, and suffered extensive damage to her manufactured home. You wouldn’t think so, however, watching her showing concern for parents as they arrive to take their children home. “I’ve cried all my tears,” she said before getting back down to all that multi-tasking.

the Naples Children & education Foundation (NCeF) and the Richard M. schulze Family Foundation largely provide funding for the outreach educational programs, garcia said. But there is always a need - now more than ever, she added.

One recipient is single mom Flor lenaris, a six ls Farm resident who is camping outside her damaged home, showering at a neighbor’s home and cooking on an outdoor grill. “they say we’ll be getting power and water back in about 10 days,” said lenaris, who works at Fresh Market in Naples and commutes each day in her small utility truck. “I didn’t work for 11 days, but I look at the people who are working so hard to get our power back, and I’m thankful,” she said.
