DEAN’SPAGEDear Colleaugues in Dentistry,

Welcome to 2015! You may actually be reading this in familiar old 2014, but it’s time to think ahead about a new year and new possibilities. Our Office of Continuing Education — in collaboration with UT Health Science Center at San Antonio Dental School, Tufts University School of Dental Medicine, and the UTSD Alumni Association — is currently taking reservations for a July 17-26, 2015 trip to Ireland that will offset the necessity of continuing education with the excitement of travel.

“The Connection between Periodontal Health and Systemic Well-Being: What Do They Mean to My Practice?” will be presented by Brian L. Mealey, DDS, MS. Drs. Todd Ehrlich and August De Oliveira will delve into digital dentistry with “Summer of CEREC” for those who opt for this course. And two additional three-hour courses will be available online to round out the offerings.

The travel will take you from Dublin to Kilkenny, Kilarney and Cong, then to Ashford Castle before heading home. Full details and registration information are available at http://go.uth.edu/Ireland.

The University of Texas School of Dentistry at Houston serves hundreds of dental professionals every year and welcome your ideas, comments and suggestions for continuing education topics. Please contact CE Coordinator [email protected] or 713-486-4028 to provide feedback.

And maybe I should add, “Tell us where you want to go.” Dental education should never be boring. (And that’s no blarney).

Sincerely,

John A. Valenza, DDSDean William N. Finnegan III Distinguished Teaching Professor in the Dental SciencesThe University of Texas School of Dentistry at Houston

Visitors Bureau Board of Directors. She also currently serves on the Arlington Arts and Tourism Council and is a proud season supporter of the Texas Rangers baseball team. Ms. Gunn is a certified fraud examiner, which enables her to investigate, interview and provide complete reports for prosecution and civil suit purposes toward embezzlement.

Presented by: Susan Gunn

Course Description:Do you have the gut feeling that all is not safe and secure in your practice? Is your hard-earned money walking out the door – without you? You’re a smart person, but can you be deceived? This unique course explores practice vulnerabilities that may encourage dishonesty in the people you trust most.

In an interactive environment, attendees study hair-raising (and eye-opening) facts revealed in a nationwide embezzlement survey, gaining insight into your own potential problem areas. Through this hands-on, lab-type “round table” experience, participants will evaluate embezzlement case studies to see practice flaws that enable embezzlement. This half-day course with limited attendance received rave reviews at the 2007 Texas Meeting.

Learn easy ways to weave accountability “threads” throughout your systems and procedures, and how to implement practical safeguards to avoid becoming a victim of financial dishonesty or deceit.

One recent attendee implemented suggested safeguards only to discover he had been embezzled.

“[This is] immediately applicable material.” - Robert L. Mitchell III, DDS, Austin, TX

Periodontology 2015:Science, Evidence and Clinical Excellence from a High-Performance Private Practice and Clinical Research Network

Quick-and-Easy Registration 713-486-4028

About the Presenter: E. Todd Scheyer, DDS, MS received his bachelor’s degree in biology, with honors, from Arizona State University and attended dental school at The Medical College of Virginia at Virginia Commonwealth University, where he graduated magna cum laude while earning clinical and research awards. Dr. Scheyer received his degree in periodontics, a certificate in conscious sedation and a master’s degree from The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio Dental School and School of Biomedical Science, clinically focusing on perio-prosthetic

reconstruction. He is a diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology and served as Senior District 5 Trustee for the American Academy of Periodontology. He is a past president of the Southwest Society of Periodontists and president of the Texas Society of Periodontists. He is in a private practice limited to periodontics and implant dentistry in Houston, Texas.

Presented by: E. Todd Scheyer, DDS, MS

Course Description:With all of the technology advances in dentistry, it is difficult for the clinician to be fully aware of the available alternatives to historical treatment methods that may provide improved outcomes and reduce morbidity in simple and complex treatment scenarios. Our periodontal and dental implant practice has been involved with clinical research associated with dental implants, guided bone-regeneration, tissue-engineering and growth factors for periodontal hard- and soft-tissue reconstruction. Because of our involvement in clinical research, we are also exposed to innovative technologies that have yet to meet the marketplace. We are involved with FDA-level studies that allow product approval and entry to the marketplace. This lecture will expose you to new technologies in periodontics and implant dentistry. With the use of some of these new technologies, we can offer our patients treatment alternatives that will allow for more robust healing, shorter healing duration, and less morbidity — all with evidence-based support. However, the clinician must know the limitations and “learning curve” of each new technology and understand how to implement these with proper informed consent and patient referral to the appropriate provider. Most important is understanding how to appropriately assess clinical outcomes in the short- and long-term for optimal patient care. Our research center strongly believes that the influence of biologics and other new technologies will have a great impact on the way we treat our patients now and in the future, with more rapid healing, improved outcomes and patient satisfaction.

Course Objectives:Upon completion of the course, you will be able to:• Discuss current and coming clinical applications of matrices and growth factors used in hard- and soft-

tissue regeneration• Improve your evidence-based approach to clinical decisions• Become empowered by the digital revolution in implant dentistry

The Visiting Professorship in Periodontics was created in July 2008 by Claude L. Nabers, DDS, MSD, and his wife, Blanche Eaton Nabers, of San Antonio. Dr. Nabers (UTSD Class of 1946) has directed that the “Nabers Lecture” be made available to students and faculty, as well as private practitioners. This lectureship continues Dr. Nabers’ own commitment to continuing education, which has included lectures in 26 states and 14 foreign countries, as well as postdoctoral studies in 15 separate dental schools and regional associations. Dr. Nabers was the 1980 Outstanding Alumnus of UT School of Dentistry at Houston and has been included in six different Who’s Who publications, relating to America, Medicine and Healthcare, and in the World. The 2015 lecture continues this lasting tribute to Dr. Nabers and his love for his profession.

Her research into endodontics diagnosis and treatment of young permanent teeth has been published in leading dental journals.

Presented by: Rebeca Weisleder, DDS

Course Description:Diagnosis has been defined as the art of identifying a disease from its signs and symptoms. It is the most critical component of the dental treatment. The collection of the medical and dental history, chief complaint, signs and symptoms, as well as clinical examination, objective testing and radiographic interpretation, are paramount for developing an accurate treatment plan that will contribute to the ultimate goal — the resolution of the disease. The dental professional should be able to discern between different entities and arrive at a correct diagnosis, thus providing an appropriate treatment plan.

Geriatrics: Our Future PatientsAlternatives in Dental Practice

Quick-and-Easy Registration 713-486-4028

Course Objectives:Upon completion of the course, you will be able to:• Review changing demographics in the U.S. and the potential impact on dental practice in future

decades• Examine changes related to aging that affect oral health; identify strategies for addressing these; and

view cases• Discuss oral disease risk factors for elderly adults and identify possible interventions• Identify physical, mental and medical conditions common to elderly adults as related to dental care,

with an emphasis on Alzheimer’s disease• Identify possible interactions of medications and their contraindications for dental procedures• Recognize signs of elder abuse and mistreatment, and understand the dental team’s professional

responsibility for reporting• Outline a protocol for expanding your current dental practice into geriatric facilities, including:

• necessary equipment and supplies• adequate manpower• legal and state board requirements

Presented by: June M. Sadowsky, DDS, MPH

Course Description:The focus of this workshop is on the oral health of elderly adults, who will soon comprise the majority of dental patients treated in the United States. Members of this cohort expect to maintain their teeth for a lifetime and are more likely to demand long-term dental care. Demographers predict that greater numbers of the elderly will be institutionalized in the future, and their oral health will need to be addressed by private dental practitioners in non-traditional ways. The course explores these demographics and reviews clinical challenges, including risk assessment for oral disease, patient management, common oral problems, non-dental changes related to aging that affect oral health, and common physical, mental and medical conditions and pharmacotherapy considerations. Additionally, elder abuse and neglect are on the increase, and dental professionals are obligated to recognize and report suspected cases. This course also will help dental professionals better understand the dynamics and signs of elder abuse. The second portion of the course will outline and direct dental practitioners on steps for establishing a dental program for geriatric facilities that will prove both rewarding and profitable.

About the Presenter: June Sadowsky, DDS, MPH is an Associate Professor and Dentist Geriatrician at The University of Texas School of Dentistry at Houston. She joined the faculty in 2006 and is a graduate of UT Health Science Center at San Antonio Dental School. In 1993, she completed a fellowship in geriatric dentistry and earned her MPH in 1995. Dr. Sadowsky has more than 10 years’ experience treating residents of Texas nursing homes, and she is the former Dental Director of the Richmond (Texas) Supported Living Center, where she also treated patients. Dr. Sadowsky
