June 28, 2020 Our Lady of Good Counsel Parish , Methuen ~ Lawrence Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Dear Parishioners, The words Jesus speaks to us this week in the Gospel of Matthew at first blush might seem hard to under-stand. "Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me, and whoever loves son or daugh-ter more than me is not worthy of me; and whoever does not take up his cross and follow after me is not wor-thy of me. Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.” What is Jesus trying to tell us? Are the First and the Fourth Commandments concerning loving God and honoring our parents at odds with each other? In fact, Jesus is teaching us about the radical demands of discipleship and the awesome rewards that follow for the faithful. There is no room for half measures here; Jesus makes extraordi-nary demands. He wants full and absolute allegiance to him, even in preference to the closest blood relatives and one’s very self. But why? Jesus, remember, is God and His call to discipleship is a call to enter the life of God, which is love. The love we have for our parents and children is an expression of God’s love for them. Jesus understands love, and knows that when we love others, we are completing the circuit bringing the love we have received from God to others, just as He did when He came to us. This is discipleship, and the de-mands that it makes on us may be overwhelming, but ultimately lead to love, life, happiness, and peace. Achieving this union with God in this life not only makes our time on earth sweeter but is also a foretaste of the Heaven planned for us. Jesus knows all this, so calls us to love in the proper order; God first, and above all, because He is the source of the Love that you are called on to share with others. It is not a selfish call, but rather the path to a generous love modeled for us by His own suffering and death. St. Jose Maria Escriva wrote “People who are constantly concerned with themselves, who act above all for their own satisfaction, endanger their eternal salvation and cannot avoid being unhappy even in this life. Only if a person forgets himself and gives himself to God and to others, in marriage as well as in any other aspect of life, can he be happy on this earth, with a happiness that is a preparation for, and a foretaste of, the joy of heaven” (St Josemaría Escrivá; Christ Is Passing By, 24). Discipleship is not easy, but necessary for eternal life. Clearly, Christian life is based on self-denial: there is no Christianity without the cross. Jesus did not shy away from the cross Himself, and He would not have us do so either. Not because He wants us to experience pain and suffering, but because He knows that pain and suffering, when experienced for another, can become something redemptive, something that saves, and the highest form of love that we can show to another.
God Bless, Fr. Chris

Please note that we had to remove all of the missalettes, cards, and papers from the Church. The reason for that is that what one person handles at a Mass cannot be left behind for you to handle when you come because it can be a source of transmission of the virus which can live
on surfaces for a while. If you like to have the readings in front of you, there are several ways to do that. Smart
phones can access the internet and bring up the USCCB.org
website, where you can click on the date and the read-ings for that day will be available. There are also sever-al apps like “Laudate” that provide access to the read-
ings and other prayers. Below you will find the links to “Magnificat” and “Word Amount Us”. Magnificat is
also available at your local Catholic bookstores.
