Let’s Continue the Christmas Celebration Continuemos la Celebración Navideña

We sometimes forget that Christmas is not a day, but an entire season. It is a short season, but celebrates not only the Nativity of the Lord (Christmas), but the Holy Family, the Epiphany of the Lord, and the Baptism of the Lord. To continue the Christmas celebration, I would like to have a special “display” on the Feast of the Holy Family: a special display of our Nativity Scenes. Do you have a special Nativity set that has been passed on for generations? Is your Nativity set handmade in ceramics or wood? Is your Nativity set from somewhere around the world and is quite unique? Do you have two or more? I hope that at least 25 of our families will participate and help make the Feast of the Holy Family a memorable time for all of our Holy Families. Of course, I would love to have many more. Please call me, Theresa Wood at 725-3066 or email me at [email protected] if you’d like to help me honor our Holy Family by displaying your Nativity Set. If you’ll fill out your name, number, or email below and turn it in to the collection basket, I will call or email you. Thanks for your consideration AND participation. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Beloved, here’s our Final Reflection on the Second Definition of Evangeliza-tion by Pope Paul VI in Evangelii Nuntiandi: “In one sentence… the Church

evangelizes when she seeks to convert, solely through the divine power of the message she proclaims, both the personal and collective consciences of people, the activities in which they engage, and the lives and concrete milieu which are theirs” (Paragraph, 18). This final line is a great message for ADVENT: “the Church evangelizes when she seeks to convert, solely through the divine power of the message she proclaims.” This message is not a theory, a lesson, a philosophy, an ideology or an opinion. It is the

Word of God; the Person of Jesus Christ Himself. It is THE TRUTH (cf. John 14:6). Only the Truth can save (cf. John 12:32); it is the Message of Salvation. So we evangelize the world, not with personal opinion, political ideal or ideolo-gy, but by aligning with the Word or Message of Jesus. According to Pope Paul VI, “Jesus Himself, the Good News of God, was the very first and the greatest evangelizer” (Evangelii Nuntiandi, 7). We only do His work through His grace, not with our own power. In the words of St. Paul, “For Christ… [sent] me… to preach the gospel, and not with eloquent wisdom, lest the cross of Christ be emptied of its power” (1Cor 1:17). Thus, we rely ONLY on the power of the Cross of Jesus (His Passion, Death, Resurrection and Ascension) – the Mystery He accomplished at His First Ad-vent. Thus, Advent is about the beginning of a new relationship with God in Christ Jesus – the Center of human histo-ry and the Lord of our lives (cf. Phil 2:9-11). Through His Cross, He cast the fire or light of divine love into people’s hearts and many repented: their lives, consciences and activities they engage in are all transformed by the Holy Spirit. They become the children of God. BIBLE VERSE OF THE WEEK: “But to all who received him, who believed in his name, he gave power to become children of God; who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God” (John 1:12-13). Our Catholic Appeal: It’s almost the end of the Year; may God grant us the grace and resources to redeem our pledges. Through Christ our Lord. Amen! Thanks for your generosity!

Treasure From Our Tradition Years ago, the trick question on religion quizzes would be to name all the liturgical colors, or the colors of the vestments worn at Mass. Rose is a color seldom seen, used at most two days a year. Today, “Gaudete Sunday,” is one of those days. The name of the day is drawn from an opening verse in the old Latin Mass texts: Gaudete is Latin for “Rejoice!” This year’s Gos-pel certainly reflects that mood as Elizabeth feels her infant within her leaping for joy at the presence of Mary. Mary’s visit to her aged cousin is an act of com-passion between women, as two kinswomen who are bearing children into the world share their joy. Some churches retain the custom of having the priest wear rose vestments today, and many will use a rose candle in the Advent wreath. Violet is the official color for Advent and Lent, but many parishes employ different hues for each season, trying to keep them dis-tinct. In medieval times, dye was costly, and poor par-ishes used unornamented plain cloth for vestments. Dyes were expensive and some colors, particularly pur-ple, difficult to achieve. In England, purple dye was made from mollusks, yielding at best a deep indigo or blue and not the desired violet. Thus, the color of Ad-vent in the British Isles has long been a deep blue, re-minding many people of Mary’s presence at the heart of the Advent mystery. That theology is largely un-planned: it’s all because of the clams! —James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

—Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright © J. St. Peter Canisius—December 21 was a renowned Dutch Jesuit Catholic priest. He became the first Dutchman to join the newly founded Society of Jesus in 1543. Through his preaching and writings, Peter Canisius became one of the most influential Catholics of his time. He supervised the founding and maintenance of the first German-speaking Jesuit colleges, often with little resources at hand. At the same time he preached in the city and vicinity, and debated and taught in the university. Due to his frequent travels between the colleges, a tedious and dangerous occupation at the time, he became known as the Second Apostle of Germany.

REJOICE! Today has traditionally been called “Gaudete Sun-day.” The Latin tag is derived from Paul’s appeal in the second reading to “rejoice always in the Lord,” and the Latin Mass text based on that reading. The irony and par-adox of this Christian joy is underlined by the fact that Paul wrote those words in prison. But from there he could see the progress of God’s work. Is it obvious to us? We feel that this is not the time for joy when there is so much suffering and moral evil. It is interesting, then, that the first reading is from the prophet Zephaniah, who is almost exclusively concerned with gloomy visions of Judgment Day. Today the Church selects the only optimistic text in Zephaniah, in which the prophet has been touched by the spirit of joy. This, we are assured on all sides, is “the season of joy.” Let us recapture that feeling of joy in our lives and reflect it to those who are joyless. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
