RCIA CANDIDATE— JO-EL PHILLIPS

My name is Jo-el. My fiancé and I are getting married this year and we feel that our faith is an important part of our lives. For me, learning more and making the decision to become Catholic is a journey I have enjoyed. To become baptized is an integral part of this journey and I look forward to receiving my First Communion. Many thanks to Our Lady of Grace and St. Albert the Great for being so wonderful and helpful to me.

WORDS FROM OUR SHEPHERD!

Punxsutawney Phil predicted on February 2nd that spring was going to come early this year. As you can tell, he was wrong. So I guess I won’t get my hopes up too soon to be able be out in the sun. But on the bright side… the pitchers and catchers have reported for spring training. GO TRIBE!!! Hopefully it will thaw out soon so those that couldn’t make it to Mass on the weekends because of weather will return. But for those parishioners who are home-bound because of illness for a long period of time, or even permanently, please call the office in order for us to keep in contact with you. We can even arrange for you to receive Communion at least on a monthly basis. Thanks to all of you who took part in the Catholic Charities Appeal last weekend. Your contributions truly help those individuals and families who are less fortunate than ourselves. Amy from Bethlehem gifts wanted me to thank all who stopped by their tables to purchase or even browse the religious items from the Holy Land.

Have a blessed week!

Fr. Bill

FAMILY PERSPECTIVES In many families, even when we are home together, we find ourselves going in different directions, separated by the things that clutter our lives. We acquire more and more “stuff,” yet we can still feel empty. Today’s gospel suggests that those who avoid all this “stuff,” who are poor and hungry now, are better able to concentrate on the things that lead to happiness: times spent together and shared memories.

OUR FRIENDS THE SAINTS Blessed John of Fiesole—Are you an artist? The patron of Christian artists, especially painters, is Blessed John of Fiesole, better known as Fra Angelico. He was a great painter of the early Renaissance who was also a Dominican Friar. Born near Florence, Italy in the late 1300’s, he was baptized Guido. In their mid-twenties, Guido and his brother joined the Dominicans at Fiesole. His brother took the name Fra Benedetto and Guido took the name Fra Giovanni (John). Both were skilled artists who had studied under a local painting master and both were assigned the task of illustrating religious books and manuscripts. Fra Giovanni continued his studies and became well-known for his frescoes. Among his early works were the Madonna of the Stars, and The Last Judgment. His most famous paintings are The Annunciation and the Descent from the Cross as well as frescoes that are in the monastery of San Marco in Florence. Fra Giovanni was called Fra Angelico (Angelic) by his fellow Dominicans, probably because of the subjects of his art, and also due to the great devotion and reverence which he had toward his heavenly subjects. He was a very holy friar who prayed when he painted and was known to have said, “To paint the things of Christ, one must live with Christ”. He used broad brush strokes to paint lifelike figures with devout facial expressions and used vivid color to heighten emotion. Michelangelo who lived several generations after Fra Angelico greatly admired his work and carved a statue of the risen Christ to place on Angelico’s tomb and said, “He has gone to meet those whom he painted.” Fra Angelico died on February 18, 1455. He was beatified by Pope St. John Paul II on October 3, 1982. His memorial is February 18.
