WORDS FROM OUR SHEPHERD

Of the Seven Sacraments of the Catholic Church, I believe the Sacrament of Reconciliation is one of the Sacraments that some of us tend to receive less often than others. Outside of Eucharist, Reconciliation is

probably offered the most. Yet as compared to Eucharist, Reconciliation is a far distant second. Is the amount of sin down in the world? Not at all! There is more sin present in the world than ever before. Are the people in the world treating each other better? I do not think I have to answer that question, because the answer is quite prevalent. Then what is keeping us from the Sacrament of Reconciliation?

Here are three reasons, I think, why people have stopped going to Reconciliation:

1. There is no such thing as sin.

I think it was Pope Pius XII who stated that “God does not take sin as lightly as we do.” We are led to believe that sin does not exist in the world any longer. That is the commentary that society—pushing their agenda on whatever we want to do is not a sin—no matter what the church says. (a) We have been led to believe that attending Mass is optional; (b) Living together as a married couple, outside of marriage, is fine; and (c) The world is all about me—is how we should live. As Catholics, we know those three comments are false and that we need to go to the Sacrament of Reconciliation prior to receiving Communion.

2. With everything out in the open, we have been bombarded by so many sinful things, we think it is normal and have now become immune.

February 20, 2022 Page 3

We cannot watch television, check out the Internet, read or hear about the latest news without hearing about violence, war and the inhumane things being done to people. The movies or television shows we watch have more sex and violence than one person could imagine. So, we believe that if it is “out there,” it cannot be sinful.

3. That Reconciliation (Confession) is passé. We have been led to believe that Reconciliation is not needed since we can talk to God directly from the forest or at the beach! We can talk to God from any location. Unfortunately, for a serious sin to be forgiven, one must go to a priest. I wonder if part of the reason there is an increase in the number of people seeing mental health professionals is because we need to get sinful things off our chest?

Have a Blessed week! Fr. Bill

LOVE AS GOD LOVES

Our  Gospel  today  con nues  Jesus’ Sermon  on  the  Plain,  in  which  we  heard Luke’s version of  the Bea tudes. This week, Jesus gives us new “commandments,” telling us  how  to  live  and  act  in  the world  as  his disciples,  rooted  in  the  radical  love  of  God for  humanity.  It  reminds  us  of  his  later speech about loving one another as he loves us,  in other words with a God‐like  love,  the kind  we  see  in  today’s  psalm  about  God’s mercy. How else could we do as Jesus tells us by  loving  our  enemies,  which  seems impossible,  un l  we  remember  that  God gave us the example of Jesus, who is like God but  also  like  us?  David  understands  this merciful  love when he  spares  the  life of his enemy  in  the first  reading. Finally, Paul  tells us that we will become like Jesus if we act as he did, as God does. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

This  week’s  calendar  appears  at  first  to have a feast day for a piece of furniture: the Chair of Peter.  In  fact,  it  func ons as a kind of  ecclesial  “Presidents’  Day.”  The  church day  points  to  Peter,  but  just  as  Presidents’ Day  began with Washington’s  birthday  and now  includes  all  presidents,  this  day  cele‐brates the Petrine ministry: Peter’s apostolic presidency passed  down  in our  tradi on  as an essen al aspect of Catholic iden ty. May‐be the day should be sub tled “Popes’ Day.” As  for  the  “chair”  itself,  it  can be  traced  to the  house  of  Priscilla  and Aquila  in  ancient Rome. Peter sat there to instruct the faithful and  to  receive  the  newly  bap zed.  When Chris anity  became  legal,  the  house  was transformed  into  a  place  for  public  prayer, and  soon  the  chair was  transported  to  the tomb  of  St.  Peter  on  the  Va can  hill. Over the  centuries,  the  hill was  leveled,  but  the tomb and the chair were preserved.   Today,  it  is  said  that  the  chair  from  that ancient  Roman  community  is  raised  high above  the altar  in  St. Peter’s,  clearly  visible just  beneath  the  oval window  showing  the descent of the Holy Spirit. The symbol of the chair  reminds  the  current  occupant  of  the Petrine office of his du es  to  shepherd  the flock  by  clear  teaching  and  by  building  up the  unity  of  the  Church.  Last  year,  on  this very  day,  Pope  Benedict  XVI  named  fi een new cardinals as an expression of this pasto‐ral care for the unity of the Church, drawing them  from a variety of cultures everywhere around the globe.  —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
