A Note From The Pastor… I hope that you all had a Happy
New Year. This weekend we
celebrate the Solemnity of the
Epiphany. The word ‘epiphany’
comes from the Greek word
epiphaneia, meaning manifesta$on:
Jesus is being manifested to the
whole world represented by the
Magi. Just who were the Magi?
What were their names, and why are
they some!mes referred to as Kings
as in the hymn “We Three Kings”? I
thought I would share some
interes$ng insights from Polish Author Grzegorz Górny’s book, “Three Kings, Ten Mysteries: The
Secrets of Christmas and Epiphany”:
• We don’t actually know what the Magi were called. The tradi!onal names of Caspar,
Melchior, and Balthasar have their origins in the sixth century. Each name is derived from a
word meaning “king”: Caspar derives from the La!n Caesar, and shares an etymological
root with the German Kaiser; Melchior is derived from the Hebrew melech; while Balthasar
stems from the Greek basileus.
• These kingly appella!ons appeared in large part due to Chris!an teaching, which in the sixth
century began to reconstruct the Magi as monarchs. It is quite likely that this occurred as a
result of theological interpreta!ons of Psalm 72, which contains the following messianic
prophecy: “May the Kings of Tarshish and of the Isles render Him tribute; may the Kings of
Sheba and Seba bring gi"s! May all Kings fall down before Him, all na!ons serve Him.”
(10-11). The idea that wise men from the East were Kings has its’ basis in this text. In
addi!on, they symbolized the extent of the known world: Tarshish was likely a Phoenician
Colony that some scholars place in southern Spain. Sheba is thought to have spanned
modern-day Ethiopia and Yemen.
We will have a Holy Hour this Sunday, January 8th, at 3PM in the Church, concluding with
Benedic$on at 4PM. Please see the bulle$n for addi$onal details. All are Welcome.
Fr. Charles has arrived. He will be saying some Masses for me as I will be on retreat. Be
assured of my thoughts and prayers this week.
Please con$nue to remember in your prayers Kathryn Hoffman, and our former Pastor, Fr. Tom;
he celebrated his Mother’s Funeral Mass this weekend on Saturday, January 7th.
God Bless,
Fr. Paul
