Although the opening lines of today's first reading claim that the Lord knows no favorites (Sirach 35:15) and is not undu-ly partial toward the weak (35:16), the remainder of the pas-sage makes it clear that the Lord does indeed pay special attention to the weak, the oppressed, and the orphans and widows. The psalmist reiterates: The Lord hears the cry of the poor (see Psalm 34:18). In the Gospel, Jesus claims that a tax collector is more justified in his prayer for mercy than the Pharisee, whose prayer was an account of his own right-eous deeds. Jesus point could not have been clearer: tax col-lectors in the Jewish society of Jesus day were not just low-ly; they were considered outcasts and cheaters. They collect-ed taxes for the hated Romans and almost certainly collected enough to assure a generous income for themselves. THE PRAYER OF THE LOWLY PIERCES THE CLOUDS When Jesus was teaching or preaching, he would regularly upset assumptions about how the world works, especially the world of religious observances. Moreover, just when we think we've figured this out, we get caught off guard yet again--disorientation layered over surprise. The Pharisees of Jesus's day emphasized the observance of Mosaic Law in everyday life, providing a path of righteous-ness for people unable to attend temple sacrifices. However, some of them also took pride in their own observances, looking down on others and becoming self-righteous. Jesus addressed this parable them, to those who were convinced of their own righteousness and despised everyone else, like tax collectors. But didn't they have a point? Tax collectors were among society's outcasts; didn't this one just admit his own sinfulness? How could a tax collector be justified (that is, made right) before God, while the Pharisee was not? Why would God even listen to the prayer of a tax collector? This surely was a surprise, upsetting common assumptions about righteousness. BUT WHO ARE THE LOWLY ? There is another layer of assumptions that gets exposed here: tax collectors could hardly be considered lowly. Wid-ows, orphans, those who suffer--these are truly lowly ones for whom the Law commands kindness, and obviously God hears their prayers. But tax collectors? They collected reve-nue for the pagan Romans; they were outcasts, objects of scorn. How could they be considered among the lowly ? For that matter--what is a tax collector doing in the temple any-way? Here the parable might be more than surprising; it might even be disorienting. What if the people we cannot imagine being justified before God, embraced by God’s mercy, are the ones whom God sees as lowly? What if the parable challenges us to question whether we ourselves un-consciously categorize people as either worthy or unworthy, either like us or one of them ? Además, justo cuando pen-samos que ya lo resolvimos, otra vez nos toman por sorpresa, desorientación una sobre otra asombrosamente. Los fariseos en el tiempo de Jesús enfatizaban el cumplimiento de la Ley de Moisés en la vida cotidiana, ofreciendo un camino de virtud para las personas que no podían asistir a los sacrifi-cios del Templo. Sin embargo, algunas de esas personas se sentían arrogantes cumpliendo los preceptos religiosos, miran-do de arriba abajo a los demás y se creían lo que llamaríamos hoy uno santurrones. Jesús les contó esta parábola sobre al-gunos que se tenían por justos y despreciaban a los demás , co-mo a los recolectores de impuestos. Pero, ¿eso indicaba algo? Los recolectores de impuestos estaban entre los marginados por la sociedad; ¿acaso este recolector de impuestos no acaba de reconocer su propia maldad? ¿Cómo podía un recolector de impuestos ser justificado (es decir, justo) ante Dios, mientras los fariseos no? ¿Por qué Dios escucharía la oración de un recolector de impuestos? Por seguro esto era una sorpresa, mo-lestando las creencias comunes acerca de la justificación. ¿PERO, QUIÉNES SON LOS HUMILDES ? Hay otra serie de suposiciones que se exponen aquí: los recolectores de impuestos difícilmente podían ser considerados humildes . Las viudas, los huérfanos, las personas que sufren, ellos son los verdaderos humildes para quienes la Ley exige generosidad y obviamente Dios escucha sus oraciones. ¿Pero los recolectores de impuestos? Ellos recaudaban ingresos para los idolatras romanos; ellos eran los marginados y sujetos de desprecio. ¿Cómo podían ser considerados en medio de los humildes ? De hecho, ¿qué hace un recolector de impuestos en el Templo en todo caso? Aquí la parábola podría ser más que sorprendente, incluso po-dría ser desorientadora. ¿Qué pasa con las personas que pen-samos no pueden ser justificadas ante Dios, abrazadas por la misericordia de Dios, son aquellas a quienes Dios las ve como humildes? ¿Qué pasa si la parábola nos desafía a preguntarnos si nosotros categorizamos inconscientemente a las personas como dignas o indignas , o bien como nosotros o una de esas ? ¿Qué pasa si tomamos seriamente la idea de que el amor de Dios es para ellos tanto como lo es para nosotros ? Marriage: Call the parish office at least six (6) months (strongly recommend one (1) year) in advance to make arrangements. Anointing of the Sick: Please call the parish office. To schedule a visit by a priest, we highly recommend that you call early in the illness. Quinceañeras: Call the parish office at least six (6) months in advance to make ar-rangements. The young lady must have received the Sacraments of Baptism and First Eucharist. It is highly recommended that the young lady be enrolled in Confirmation.

FIRST FRIDAY IS NOVEMBER 1

Mass will be at 8:15am. Eucharistic Adoration will be continu-

ous from after Morning Mass until Benediction at 12 midnight.

Confessions will be from 6:00pm - 7:00pm.

We will be collecting food to make our Thanksgiving and Christmas food baskets at all masses beginning 11/2 through 11/17. This has been a successful parish out-reach project and we hope that this year is no exception. Items needed for the baskets are listed below.

CANNED FOODS Spaghetti sauce, tomato sauce, diced tomatoes, soups, stews, vegetables, fruits, chili beans, pinto beans, black beans, refried beans, pork & beans, tuna, chicken, spam/luncheon meats, spa-ghetti o’s, ravioli's, beef a roni.

BOXED & PACKAGED FOODS Sugar, flour, bisquick, pancake mix/syrup, cake mixes/icing boxed stuffing, instant potatoes, cereal, oatmeal, peanut butter, jelly, instant jello, pudding, snack pack, macaroni & cheese, macaroni noodles, spaghetti noodles, rice, dries beans

SUNDRY ITEMS Blankets, toothpaste, soap, toilet paper, shampoo, deodorant hand lotion, laundry soap

Monetary donations and gift cards for food are welcome. Make checks payable to OLPH and write FOOD BASKETS on the memo line. If you would like to donate a turkey, ham or other perishable items please call to make those arrangements.
