HOLY FAMILY OF JESUS, MARY AND JOSEPH PAGE 2

PASTOR’S COLUMN

Dear Community of Our Lady of Perpetual Help,

“God sets a father in honor over his children … a mother’s authority He confirms over her sons and daughters …” Sirach

Our parents are a gift from God. Their value is priceless. They mark our lives. That is why people that do not have parents or have parents that are not good suffer from so many traumas. Our parents are not perfect, but when they strive to do good, they form us in the marvelous ways of God. The goodness that comes forth from us was brought to birth by the love of our parents.

Our families are not perfect, but they are sacred since God’s presence is accessible to all families. Families choose to invite God into their life or they can also not allow God in.

Let us pray for our parents, our families!

“Let the peace of Christ control your hearts … whatever you do … in word or deed … do everything in the name of Jesus …” Colossians

Let us always go to the Holy Family and ask them to bless us.

Monsignor Lorenzo

New Year’s Resolution: Become a mandatory reporter

Even if the legal requirements for mandatory re-por ng may not cover your specific posi on, as Catholics, we are called to protect the vulnerable at all mes, and that may mean repor ng on inappro-priate behavior that puts a child at risk. PAPAL INTENTION FOR DECEMBER

For those suffering illness, and those in need of our prayers Carole Kelly Rodolfo Sanchez Fernando Aguilar Eulalio & Victoria Delgado Mike Goodes Fredis Granados Daniel Elizarraras

For those who have gone before us Catalina Franco Cay Evans Rosa Felipe Rodriguez Herrera

Esaul Delgado

Lord, Hear our prayers.

Today we celebrate the Feast of the Holy family. But we all need to know that the feast of the Holy Family is not simply for perfect families, with 2.5 children and a nice house, where figh ng and discord are absent. Ra-ther, this feast is for the divorced, for those who struggle to love a parent who has done something atrocious, for those who long for children but cannot have them, for those who are forgo en and unloved, for single moms and single dads, for those who have le their homeland and families behind to send money to feed spouse and child, for those who are single but don’t want to be, and on and on. Even here, especially here, in this messiness, the Word wants to become flesh and dwell among us. And for our families, the goal is not to become merely like the Holy Family. Rather, it is to become like the Word made flesh himself. To enter into the sorrowful places of the world, the places where neither obliga on nor love is found, and to offer the gi of love that is the heart of Christmas. This is the feast of the Holy Family, this is a feast for all of us.

GOD’S TIMING

Some mes it seems like no ma er how much we pray God doesn’t hear us. It can be temp ng to give up hope, but remember, God always answers prayer in His me. Each day, decide to trust God; His ming is perfect.

“But God, who is rich in mercy, because of the great love he had for us, even when we were dead in our transgressions, brought us to life with Christ” Ephesians 2:4-5

HANNAH AND MARY The story of Hannah and her son Samuel in to-day’s reading from 1 Samuel was especially im-portant for Luke’s Gospel. The passage describes the presenta on of young Samuel to the priest Eli as part of the story of the faith of Hannah. Hannah had been in great suffering, as she had long desired to have a son, and saw this as central to her voca on and iden ty. Hannah’s deep honesty with God dur-ing her distress, together with her confident persis-tence in prayer, reveals her as a model of faith. Luke links Hannah to Mary through the Magnificat song in Luke 1, which mirrors Hannah’s joyous song in 1 Samuel 2. Luke links young Samuel to Jesus, through the presenta on in the Temple in Luke 2. Luke is sugges ng that God is up to something big. Just as Samuel ini ated a turning point in Is-rael’s history, Jesus is about to open a new chapter in human history. Their stories are rooted in the re-markable faith of their mothers, Hannah and Mary. WEAVING THE STORY Today’s passage from Luke is the only story about Jesus in the Gospels that occurs between Jesus’ in-fancy and his adult ministry. Luke uses the story to weave these elements together. This story, like all the infancy passages, emphasiz-es that Jesus was born Son of God. Jesus’ first spo-ken words in Luke conclude with “I must be in my Father’s house.” God is his Father, and Jesus speaks as God’s Son. Luke connects the future ministry of Jesus with the scene at the temple with the teachers. Jesus’ listeners are astounded at his wisdom. This an ci-pates similar scenes as an adult. Luke also subtly hints at Jesus’ resurrec on, with details such as the ques on “why were you looking for me?” similar to “why do you seek the living one among the dead?” Luke invites us to see his Gospel as an integrated whole, weaving together Jesus’ birth, life, death, and resurrec on.

2. Read the Bible every day to understand God’s character and his ways. “For the Word of God is alive and ac ve. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and a tudes of the heart” (Heb 4:12).

3. Encourage others to start or con nue their journey of faith. “Finally, brothers and sisters, rejoice! Strive for full restora on, encourage one another, be of one mind, live in peace. And the God of love and peace will be with you” (2 Cor 13:11).

4. Invite at least one person to church each week. “But encourage one another daily, as long as it is called ‘today”, so that none of you may be hardened by sin’s decei ulness” (Heb 3:13).

5. Join a Bible study. “I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you” (Ps 119:11).

6. Commit to a community outreach for one season. “He defends the cause of the fatherless and the wid-ow and loves the foreigner residing among you, giving them food and clothing” (Deut 10:18).

7. Volunteer at my church. “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as ransom for many” (Mark 10:45).

8. Open my home to mes of fellowship and disciple‐ship. “Do not forget to show hospitality to strangers, for by doing so some people have shown hospitality to angels without knowing it” (Heb 13:2)

9. Commit to iden fying the needs vs. wants in my budget and increasing my charitable giving. “And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow? They do not labor or spin” (Ma 6:28).

10. Keep a journal to daily or weekly document the progress of my resolu ons. “This observance will be for you like a sign on your hand and a reminder on your forehead that this law of the Lord is to be on your lips” (Ex 13:9a).
