Pastor’s Corner

“Me and my household…We will serve the Lord; We will serve the Lord…Me and my household!”

It is a longstanding tradition in our Catholic faith to dedicate the month of May to the Blessed Virgin Mary. This practice seems to have begun in the medieval times when a 30 day devotion to Mary was transferred from August 15 – September 14 to the month of May, as a way to “Christianize” certain secular feasts that were popular during the springtime.

During “Mary’s Month” it is common to increase our praying of the Rosary, especially in a communal setting and to celebrate a ‘May crowning’ of a statue of our Blessed Lady.

In our parish we hold the May crowning after our young parishioners receive the Sacrament of First Eucharist (First Communion). This provides an invitation for them to participate in this devotion to the Mother of God who brought the “Bread of Life” into our world; for it was her body and blood that nurtured the Christ Child in her womb so that we can be fed by the Body and Blood of Christ in the womb of the Church.

This year is a special time for a particular Marian devotion. 2017 marks the 100th anniversary of the apparitions of Our Lady of Fatima, when the Blessed Mother appeared to 3 peasant children in a rural part of Portugal. The message given to the visionaries can be summarized by three actions: penance, prayer and devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary.

These appearances of Our Lady began on May 13, 1917 and continued on the 13th of the month until October of that year. Therefore, our parish will celebrate this centennial milestone of Our Lady of Fatima with a communal praying of the rosary at the Marian grotto on our St. Nicholas property on the 13th of each month for six months at 6:30 pm. The members of our parish’s Altar and Rosary Society have volunteered to lead this devotion each month and I encourage you to attend and participate in this tribute to Our Lady.

Also during the month of May a pilgrim statue of Our Lady of Fatima will be displayed at both our Church sites; at St. Nicholas from 5/1 – 5/15 and then at Assumption Church for the rest of the month. This is another opportunity to ‘sit’ with Mary and reflect on the reason God would allow her to visit Lucia, Jacinta and Francisco and why He encouraged devotion to her Immaculate Heart. But we, in our parish know the answer: so that we can grow in our discipleship, “emulating the humility and service of Mary – the first disciple and our Mother.

Peace, Fr. Nick

Dear Friends,

We begin this month of Mary with our traditional Crowning of the Blessed Mother. On Friday, May 12th, our second grade students will lead us in our monthly Mass at 9:00 am. Upon completion of the liturgy, the student body will process to the school where the First Communion and Confirmation students will crown the statue of Mary in the school gymnasium. All are invited to attend this seasonal devotion to Mary.

Thanks to all for your continued support. God bless you,

Mary Ellen Schurtz
