From the Pastor’s Desk Dear Parishioners:
Happy Feast Day! This weekend we celebrate our patronal feast! Yes, you may know that the actual feast of Our Lady of Sorrows is September 15. However, since it is our patronal feast, the Church gives it the rank of a “Solemnity” and permits us to move its celebration to the nearest Sunday. Thus, the 25th Sunday in Ordinary Time defers to Our Blessed Mother. Let us then honor her under this great and ancient title—Our Lady of Sorrows. Let us implore her maternal intercession and loving protection upon every member of our parish and upon its every endeavor. How appropriate that our celebration of her feast continues with our parish’s annual picnic. Thanks to all who organize and help to make the picnic such a great family event! Our feast coincides with Catechetical Sunday and the opening of our Religious Education Program. How grateful we are to our director, Mrs. Mariyam Francis and our dedicated catechists—all volunteers! May our young parishioners and their teachers have a good year as they come to know, love, and serve the Lord. In his reflection on the “Mother of Sorrows” Cardinal Basil Hume wrote:
There will be times when, like Our Lady, we are puzzled and bewildered. Sometimes there will be periods when we must walk through life groping, like blind people. When we are experiencing that kind of situation, we must stick at it, be faithful, keep going, knowing that God allows this for one reason alone: that we learn to trust Him. It is quick easy to trust when things go well, when we see clearly. But it is quite different when we have to walk in the dark and go on trusting. When the sword pierces our hearts, we remember that this was Our Lady’s experience too, and because it was hers, there should be a part of us that can say “thank you” when we are called upon to undergo the same. She is there—in the background as mothers often are—but there nonetheless.
With affection, Msgr. Gervasio

Se pou jen pawasyen nou yo ak pwofese nou yo pase yon bon lane kote yo pral aprann renmen aksevi Granmet la! Nan refleksyon li sou "Notre Dame des douleurs", Cardinal Bazil Hume te ekri:
Pral gen des moman kote, Kom Manman Mari, nap perplexes e dezoryante. Pafwa ap gen des peryod kote nap vle mache nan tatonnen lavi a tankou yon avèg. Le nou ap fe eksperyans ki kalite sitiyasyon, nou dwe kenbe fèm, rete fidèl, nèt ale, konnen ke Bondye pemet sa fet pou yon sel rezon: ke nou aprann a fe L konfyans. Li fasil e rapid pou fe L konfyans lè tout bagay ap mache byen, lè nou wè klè. Men li toutafè diferan lè nap mache nan fenwa. Loske epe a pèse kè nou, nap sonje eksperyans Manman Mari a tou, e paske sa te rive L ta dwe gen yon pati nan nou ki kapab di "Mesi" lè se tou pa nou pou nou sibi menm bagay sa a. Li la—nan bakground nan kom anpil manman fe eksperyans lan—men konpletman diferan.

Fr. Carter’s Celebration…. A fond, prayerful, and joyful farewell!
Thanks to all who helped organize and carry out such a wonderful “send-off” to our dear Father Todd Carter last Sunday! The Mass brought us together to pray for him as he assumes the pastoral care of Holy Innocents Parish, Neptune. Afterward, many joined us in the hall for a reception. Thanks to everyone who attended and all who helped us offer this act of thanksgiving to Father Carter who served us so well!

Disaster Relief Drive this Weekend Monetary donations are being accepted this weekend (September 17-18) to assist with disaster relief in Louisiana where 13 people died and more than 10,000 residents were forced into shelters last month. More than 100,000 homes were damaged by the catastrophic flooding, considered the worst natural disaster in the United States since Hurricane Sandy, which affected many within our own diocese just four years ago. A second collection is being taken up at during Masses at St. Anthony, while donations may be deposited in the green containers found at all entrances at Our Lady of Sorrows. Please make checks payable to OLS-SA. The Diocese of Trenton will collect the donations from our parish and others, and then forward one check to the Diocese of Baton Rouge Disaster Assistance Fund. Free will contributions to relief efforts can be made directly to:

Thanks for considering supporting this charitable outreach to the victims of this disaster. Catechetical Sunday—September 18
Today we celebrate Catechetical Sunday and impart a special blessing to our catechists as they begin a new year. How grateful we are that so many of our parishioners devote themselves to this important ministry of the Church—to share the faith with our young members. The 2016 Catechetical Sunday theme is Prayer: The Faith Prayed.

-----“A life not lived for others is not a
life.” Blessed Teresa of Calcutta
We have the opportunity to assist the needy within our own parish through the donations you make to the St. Vincent DePaul Conference. At Saint Anthony Church Permanent “Poor Boxes” are found at the doors of
the church. At Our Lady of Sorrows Church A collection is taken up on the 2nd and 4th
Sundays of the month. Green donation containers are found at the church doors.
Donations may also be made by placing a gift in the collection basket along with your parish contribution. It should be in a separate envelope that is clearly marked Poor Box. Checks should be made payable to OLS-St Anthony.
Have You Enrolled Your Preschooler or Kindergartener in "Cherubs?"
What is Cherubs? Cherubs is the name of our early childhood religious education program for three-, four-, and five-year-olds.
When are classes? Cherubs sessions are held on Sunday mornings from 9:30 to 10:30 from October to May.
Where are the classes held? Cherubs classes are held in the parish elementary school building in ‘age appropriate’ classroom settings.
What about class size? Cherubs class sizes are usually small (8-12 children) so learning opportunities are optimal.
Why send my child to this program? Children who attend early childhood religious education classes are better prepared to begin formal religious education classes in first grade. During Cherubs classes, the children are introduced to Scripture stories, songs, prayers, and practices, as well as fun-filled, faith-filled crafts and activities.
Where do I sign my child up? The Religious Education Office of the Parish has all the details. Please call 587-4372 to obtain registration forms or download them from www.ols-sa.org.

News from Your Parish School
As they say, "That's a HOT one!" Yes, the first week of school sure was a hot one, but through the support of our parish the children at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic School were able to stay cool. The air conditioning allowed us to enjoy full days of school, and everyone happily returned to a schedule of learning and friendship. The upcoming week holds ever more excitement and opportunities for gathering as a school community.
On Monday and Tuesday, September 19 and 20, we welcome everyone to our Back to School Nights. Families have an opportunity to meet our current School Board members, as well as visit their children's classrooms. Each family will have the time to enjoy their child's individual schedules and spend some time with each of the core teachers as well as special areas of Computer Instruction, Art, Music, Physical Education, and Spanish. This is the second time that new families will be joining together. Amidst the heat of the first week, our newest OLS family members were invited to a "Get to Know You" dinner. Our middle school students did an outstanding job of transforming the cafeteria and serving each of the families. The PTA provided the pizza, salad and desserts! It's great to be a part of a lively and loving school family. Many thanks to the many volunteers that made this welcome party take shape.
The children of OLS will be planning their second prayer gathering on Wednesday, September 21. Many thanks to Mrs. Emde and the students in Grade 8! They planned our opening gathering Mass on September 9, and will also host the St. Matthew Student Prayer Service on 9/21. Please consider stopping in to join our Student Prayer Service. These gatherings are held in the gym at 9 a.m. It's a wonderful way to begin a day, and see the best of your parish school joining in a prayerful gathering. All are welcome!
Of course, our teachers model the behaviors we support with our students! On the afternoon of September 21, our teachers will be gathered in prayer at our Faculty Prayer Service. Each month, a group of teachers plan a gathering allowing us to renew our commitment to the mission of Catholic school. After the prayer gathering, we gather for our business meeting. We begin and end all things in prayer. Discover the excitement of Our Lady of Sorrows School for your family. It's really never too early to begin to consider your child's education. The door is always open to you! Don't be a stranger, stop by to say hello! Promise, we'll make you feel right at home!
Seniors’ Activities
Senior Club #1 The next monthly meeting for Senior Club #1 will be held on Wednesday, October 12, at 1:00 p.m. in St. Anthony Church hall. Please plan to join us for lunch and bingo.
Senior Club #2 Senior Club #2 will hold regular meetings in the Church Meeting Room at 1 p.m. on the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays of each month. The next few meetings are scheduled for September 20 and October 4 & 18.

The bus leaves the OLS parking lot at 9:30 a.m. Any one age 21 or older is invited. The cost is $35, and you get back $25 in casino credit. If you're interested, please call Doreen Napoleon (706-6169).
New members are welcome to join our clubs. Are you someone, or do you know someone, who…
Has expressed an interest in becoming Catholic?
Has a child over the age of seven who has not been baptized?
Was baptized Catholic as a child, but has not celebrated the Sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist?
The Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults may be for you. In this process, we offer an opportunity to come together in a small group to learn more about our faith. Sessions focus on the teachings and experience of Church and prepare individuals to celebrate the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist during the Easter season. You are welcome to participate in the process with your questions, your insights, and your faith story in a warm, accepting setting. Our first class is on Tuesday, September 20, at 7:30 p.m. in the Church Meeting Room. If you are interested, please call the parish office (587-4372).

Lord Jesus Christ, Word of the Father, we turn to you.
Watch over our plans. Enliven our service to the Church.
Sustain our labors. Guide our steps in search of the best ways to
proclaim your Gospel. Our poverty is great.
We do not place trust in ourselves but only in you. Encourage us, reassure us, give us your blessing. You, who with the Holy Spirit, live and reign in us
and in your Church forever and ever. Amen.

OLS-SA Boy Scouting Programs to Hold Recruitment Night
OLS-SA Cub Scout Pack 38 would like to invite you to an open house on Friday, September 23 at 7:00 p.m. in the Church Hall. Cub Scout Pack 38 is the oldest part of our parish scouting history, dating back about 55 years Traditionally, to join Cub Scouts, boys had to be in the first grade or age 7, and can participate until they complete 5th grade. New this year is our Lion Program, part of Pack 38 for boys in Kindergarten. So Kindergarten students can now participate in Cub Scouts! Cub Scouting is a family oriented activity designed to promote character, citizenship, family ties, pride and teamwork, as well as develop both mental and physical fitness, all in a caring and FUN environment. OLS-SA Boy Scout Troop 38 would like to invite you to come to our Troop Court of Honor on Sunday, September 25 at 6:30 p.m. Boy Scouting programs are designed for young men in grades 5-12, and Troop 38 has been around more than 20 years. The troop meets once a week throughout the school year, and has monthly outings which usually involve weekend camping trips and/or canoe or rafting trips or hikes. Each year, we spend a week away during the summer. For more on our programs, please contact: Cubmaster Damian Bomm ([email protected]) or Scoutmaster Jay Scheaffer ([email protected]).

The Celebration of Mass with the
Anointing of the Sick
7:00 p.m. Tuesday, October 18
Our Lady of Sorrows Church By the sacred anointing of the sick and the prayer of the priests, the whole Church commends those who are ill to the suffering and glorified Lord, that he may raise them up and save them.” (CCC 1499)
Who may receive this sacrament?
Those awaiting a surgery of a serious nature.
The elderly who are notably weakened, even if not seriously ill.
Sick children may be strengthened through this anointing.
Our parish invites all those Catholics who may be ill to this sacred encounter that they might know that Christ, who often visited and healed the sick, loves them in their illness.
