The prophets – we have the examples

of Isaiah and John the Baptist in today’s

readings — were in no doubt that people

sinned and that the people of God had fallen

into sin. Yet, when they call the people ‘to

repent’ they start looking forward not

backwards. To repent is to start anew, to make sure that the former ways

disappear, that a new way of living appears. The repentance is the act of

preparing the way for the Lord to come along. Repentance is change so

that in the future all can see the salvation of God. Christians have never been in doubt that humanity had fallen into

sin and needed a redeemer. But to say it needed a redeemer is to look

forward. God’s justice was not the destruction of the sinful people, but to

send his Son. When Jesus came he was not here to punish for the past,

but to be the redeemer who would open up the future after sin and its

effects. Jesus called us to a new way of living, he did not come ‘to call to

account’ for the past. As we look forward to the celebration of the coming of the saviour

we have produced some handouts for you to take and give to someone

you know who might be ready to receive Christ into their lives this

Christmas. Be their John the Baptist! Encourage them to come with you

to Mass. You may change their lives. Continue to remember in your prayers Fr. Jackson Sebastian as he

preparations to receive him and make him welcome.

NOT A MILK BOTTLE TOP!

In the milk-bottle top box in the church porch I found a yale-type key

with a key fob "Birkbeck, University of London". I assume it wasn't

meant to be thrown out so please let me know it's been dropped

inadvertently and I'll put it on the lost property shelf.

TAKE SOME TIME TO REFLECT THIS ADVENT Advent is a very special season of the year – and yet it can sometimes

pass us by, because we’re so busy preparing for Christmas. For the

past couple of years, our diocesan Spirituality Commission

has produced a series of short daily emails, to help us focus on the

true meaning of Advent. These have been very well received, so we

would like to make more people aware of them. To sign up, please

visit www.southwarkdsc.org.uk

THANK YOU FROM THE FOODBANK!

Leslie Holland, who spoke after Mass last Foodbank Sunday, would

like to extend her sincere thanks on behalf of the Vine Foodbank for

the very generous donations from our parishioners! Amongst the

donations was a Study Experience blue lanyard with a small key

on it - please contact the parish office if it belongs to you!
