S S E “I I ”

This past Thursday, we celebrated the Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord. The celebra on of the Paschal Mystery con nues and our hope to live in the presence of the Risen Lord is a great cause for joy. The Lord Jesus has returned to the right hand of his Father and now heaven and earth are closely connected by the presence of the Eternal Word of God, Jesus Christ, having taken on our human flesh, seated at the right hand of God. Following the great feast of the Ascension, we have arrived at the Seventh Sunday of Easter. The Easter season concludes next week with the celebra on of the Solemnity of Pentecost. During these days we pray for a new outpouring of the Holy Spirit to confirm us in our witness to Jesus Christ.

In our reading from the Acts of the Apostles for this week’s liturgy, we meet Saint Stephen and Acts shows how closely Stephen’s death was parallel to that of the Lord Jesus: “Stephen, filled with the Holy Spirit, looked up intently to heaven and saw the glory of God and Jesus standing at the right hand of God, and Stephen said, ‘Behold, I see the heavens opened and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God.’” (Acts 7:55-56). As Stephen is stoned by an angry crowd, he prays: “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit” (Acts 7:59). Just as Jesus prayed at the moment of his death on the cross: “Father into your hands, I commend my spirit” (Luke 23:45) Stephen u ers the prayer of trust in the love and mercy of the Father. As Stephen’s life and death mirrored the Lord’s so must ours. The way of discipleship is not easy, o en, more o en than not, it involves the way of sacrifice and self-giving. Our Holy Father, Pope Francis, noted:

The faith itself enables us to see beyond the limits of our human sight, beyond the boundaries of earthly life. It grants us to contemplate ‘the heavens opened,’ as St Stephen says, and the living Christ at God’s right hand. Dear friends, let us keep the faith we have received and which is our true treasure, let us renew our faithfulness to the Lord, even in the midst of obstacles and misunderstanding. God will never let us lack strength and calmness.

As we celebrate Mother’s Day on this Sunday we are reminded that we have had the very best examples of what it means to give and not count the cost in our own mothers. They teach us that love is of God and that we serve God best by seeking to do his will and by living as the Lord Jesus did when he walked among us in the power of the Holy Spirit who dwells in our hearts and guides us. This Sunday is a me of intense prayer that we observe in imita on of the Virgin Mary and the apostles. Together we pray for the outpouring of the Holy Spirit so that we might be faithful to the mission that Christ has entrusted to us. We honor our mothers and we pray for the intercession of the Virgin Mary, Mother of God, for them, and we also ask for the grace to live in imita on of their self-giving love.

In our second reading from the Book of Revela on we hear encouraging words: “I, John, heard a voice saying to me: I bring with me the recompense I will give to each according to his deeds. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end” (Revela on 22:12-13). Jesus Christ is the key to history and me; he is sovereign over all of created reality and anything that we do in his name will return to us as a blessing. That is our consola on in mes of suffering and difficulty. From the beginning, a degree of suffering is associated with our following of the Lord and with holding fast to the faith that he gives to us.

Being faithful to the gospel is an arduous task and there are mes when we become overwhelmed by difficul es and even be tempted to think it to be a waste of me or a fu le pursuit. The gi of our self-giving love, and other-centeredness that we especially learn from our mothers, is a gi that gives praise to God and is a return of the goodness that God shares with us.

Our gospel for this Sunday is once again from John’s gospel, the gospel of the Easter Season, and we find Jesus praying aloud to his Father – he prays aloud so that his disciples might hear firsthand the nature of his rela onship with his heavenly Father: “Holy Father, I pray not only for them, but also for those who will believe in me through their word, so that they may all be one, as you, Father, are in me and I in you, that they also may be in us, that the world may believe that you sent me” (John 17:20-23). Jesus prays for his followers: “Father, they are your gi to me. I wish that where I am they also may be with me, that they may see my glory that you gave me, because you love me before the founda on of the world” (17:24). Jesus makes us one with him and through life we, his followers, share in the divine life that he shares with his Father. Jesus is not only speaking to the disciples, he is also speaking to all of the believers who will come a er them and will have received the faith through their apostolic witness. The preaching of the apostles has given us the gi of our faith. It is our voca on to also make sure that the message of the gospel goes out to all the world. Through the power of the Holy Spirit they are consecrated in the truth and empowered to carry on his mission in the world. As Jesus glorifies the Father through carrying out the mission entrusted to him by the Father so, too, must we.

Pastor’s Message (...continued from Page 4)

Continued on Page 6...

Pope Benedict XVI, spoke of the significance of the farewell discourse of Jesus and the prayer that we are privileged to listen to today:

In his farewell discourses to the disciples, Jesus stressed the importance of his ‘return to the Father,’ the culmina on of his whole mission: indeed, he came into the world to bring man back to God, not on the ideal level - like a philosopher or a master of wisdom - but really, like a shepherd who wants to lead his sheep back to the fold. This ‘exodus’ toward the heavenly Homeland which Jesus lived in the first person, he faced solely for us. It was for our sake that he came down from Heaven and for our sake that he ascended to it, a er making himself in all things like men, humbling himself even to death on a cross and a er having touched the abyss of the greatest distance from God. For this very reason the Father was pleased with him and ‘highly exalted’ him (Phil 2:9), restoring to him the fullness of his glory, but now with our humanity. God in man - man in God: this is even now a reality, not a theore cal truth. Therefore, Chris an hope, founded on Christ, is not an illusion but, as the Le er to the Hebrews says, ‘we have this as a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul’ (Heb 6:19), an anchor that penetrates Heaven where Christ has gone before us.

As the Easter season draws to a close we con nue to give praise and thanks to God for the gi of his Son, Jesus Christ, who has won for us victory of sin and death and who invites us to share in his divine life. We pray for a new outpouring of the Holy Spirit into our hearts so that we might be faithful followers of the Lord Jesus. We can take great confidence and hope in our ability to be faithful to the gospel because the Lord himself is seated at the right hand of the Father and intercedes for us.

H M ’ D

Today we honor our mothers and we ask God to bless them for the gi of life that they share with us and for the countless sacrifices that they make on our behalf. We should honor and be grateful to our mothers every day but it is important that we take this special day to let them know how deeply we care for them and value not only what they have done for us but our love for them for who they are: the ones who make us who we are. Our mothers share the gi of faith with us and they teach us how to selflessly love. It is always reassuring to know that our mothers are in our corner no ma er what comes. This is the day to honor our mothers, grandmothers, great-grandmothers, and all those who serve as spiritual mothers to others. We keep our mothers in our prayers today and we pray that God will give them the reward of their faithfulness. To mothers who have gone home to the Lord we pray that they will know the gi of peace, happiness, and light in the presence of the Risen Christ. We pray for the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God, and Our Lady of the Holy Angels to intercede for our mothers and through her powerful intercession to give them strength, peace, and joy. Happy Mother’s Day!

F E G !

We pray for all of the young people of our parish who received First Holy Communion last weekend. First Holy Communion is one of the greatest days and one of the most joyful days in the life of a parish. First Communion Day is filled with joy for them, for their families, and for our parish. We pray that God will bless them and that they will always remain close to the Lord in the Eucharist so that they will con nue to be joyful followers of the Lord Jesus. It was a great joy to see so many family members celebrate with our First Communicants. The life that they receive from the Eucharist began last week. The gi of the Body and Blood of Christ that we receive in the Eucharist is a gi that our young people should receive every week. Par cipa ng in Mass is a gi and a responsibility.

Thank you to the parents of our young people for entrus ng them to our religious educa on program and for allowing our parish to par cipate in their faith forma on. We are grateful to the parents of our First Communicants for giving us the privilege of assis ng you in handing on the faith to your children. When your children were bap zed you promised that you would hand on the faith to them and you have been true to your word.

Thank you to Mrs. Paula White and all of the catechists who have worked in preparing our young people for their First Holy Communion. Please keep these wonderful young people in your prayers as they receive the Lord in the Eucharist for the first

me. Thank you to Ms. Trish Filiaci for all that she does to direct and organize our Faith Forma on Program which is a monumental task! We are grateful to Trish for all of her devo on and hard work.

Pastor’s Message (...continued from Page 5)

Sincerely in Christ,

Monsignor T. Mark Condon Pastor

T T T !

Thank you to all of those who made our annual Tricky Tray, held at The Bethwood on May 4th, such a success. I want to especially thank Ralph and Brenda Miller, Valerie Arrabito and all of the members of the Tricky Tray Commi ee for their hard work and dedica on to this important parish fundraiser. A special word of thanks to our confirma on candidates for helping us to distribute the prizes won to the recipients on the night of the Tricky Tray. They did a great job! A special word of thanks to:

Commi ee Valerie Arrabito – Donna Bradley – Kathy Bruno – Carol Cullen

Mary Fierro – Sue Ann Jones – Anne e Kostroski Brenda and Ralph Miller – Janet Lee and John O’Donnell

Volunteers Amy Ambrosio – Sue Bertsch – Silvio Cinquino – Joanne Hoffman

Susan and David Mallonee – Rich Molteni – Gloria Papciak – Lisa Papciak Kathy Ragan – Donna Rojas – Mary Rose Stevens

Jackie White – Paula White

It takes a great deal of work, countless hours, and blood, sweat, and tears to make fundraisers like the Tricky Tray happen. I am indebted to all the members of the Tricky Tray Commi ee who spend countless, countless hours preparing for a wonderful evening that really helps us to meet our parish budget. These are the unsung heroes of the parish who work quietly and faithfully to keep us going. It is not too much of an exaggera on to say that without them we would not be here. Of course it is a constant struggle to keep the parish afloat financially, you know that, and you are always generous and I am always grateful. There is no subs tute for the involvement of parishioners in making events like the Tricky Tray happen. If there is a failure in recrui ng new members for such endeavors the fault is all my own and it is really a failure of my own leadership. And so I ask you to please be in touch with me if you would consider serving on the Tricky Tray Commi ee. If you were to compare this year’s list of commi ee members and volunteers with last year’s you would no ce that this year’s list is markedly shorter. Your help is needed so please think of being part of this commi ee where you will meet wonderful people and where you will be ac vely involved in keeping the parish alive and vibrant. There is only so much me and energy that people have. I know that. But if there are many people involved, the work is lighter and it is much easier to accomplish. Please give this request some serious thought.
