As we celebrate the Third Sunday of Easter we hear the beau ful account of the two disciples who had met Jesus on the road to Emmaus now joyfully sharing this news with the eleven who had remained in Jerusalem. Following the crucifixion and death of Jesus these two disciples were cres allen and heartbroken – as were the eleven; all of their dreams were at an end. Or so they thought. As they are making their explana on of the events of Emmaus, Jesus stands in the midst of the eleven and delivers his recurring Easter message: “Peace be with you” (Luke 24:36). Naturally, the disciples were terrified at the sight of Jesus; Luke tells us that the disciples thought: “they were seeing a ghost” (24:37). Jesus asks the disciples to have faith in what their eyes are showing them – they are seeing the risen Lord: “Why are you troubled? And why do ques ons arise in your hearts? Look at my hands and my feet, that it is I myself. Touch me and see, because a ghost does not have flesh and bones as you can see I have” (24:38-39). Jesus makes certain that the disciples know that they are not seeing a ghost and so he asks them: “Have you anything to eat?” (24:41); the disciples “gave him a piece of baked fish; he took it and ate it in front of them” (24:42). Jesus shows his disciples that he has no inten on of abandoning them. Because of his resurrec on from the dead he rescues the disciples and all of us from death. As he did with the two disciples on the Road to Emmaus, Jesus explains to the eleven the meaning of all that had taken place: “These are my words that I spoke to you while I was s ll with you, that everything wri en about me in the law of Moses and in the prophets must be fulfilled” (24:44). Jesus explains to them that his passion and death was not just something that happened because of unfortunate events, rather his saving death was the fulfillment of the law and the prophets and part of God’s plan of salva on. Benedict XVI commented on the gospel for this Third Sunday of Easter in this way:
In the Easter Season the liturgy offers us manifold incen ves to strengthen our faith in the Risen Christ. Today, on the Third Sunday of Easter, for example, St Luke tells how the two disciples of Emmaus, a er recognizing him "in the breaking of the bread" (Lk 24:35), returned to Jerusalem full of joy to tell the others what had happened to them.
And just as they were speaking, the Lord appeared, showing them his hands and his feet with the signs of the Passion. Then, in the face of the Apostles' disbelief and wonder, Jesus had them give him some broiled fish and ate it before their eyes (cf. Lk 24:35-43).
In this and in other accounts, one can discern a repeated invita on to overcome incredulity and believe in Christ's Resurrec on, since his disciples are called to be witnesses precisely because of this extraordinary event.
The Resurrec on of Christ is central to Chris anity. It is a fundamental truth to be reasserted vigorously in every epoch, since to deny it, as has been, and con nues to be a empted, or to transform it into a purely spiritual event, is to thwart our very faith. St Paul states: "If Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is in vain and your faith is in vain" (1 Cor 15:14).
In the days that followed the Lord's Resurrec on, the Apostles stayed together, comforted by Mary's presence, and a er the Ascension they persevered with her in prayerful expecta on of Pentecost. Our Lady was a mother and teacher to them, a role that she con nues to play for Chris ans of all mes.

Pastor’s Message (...continued from Page 4)
As we con nue our joyful celebra on of the Easter Season we pray that we will be open to the gi of peace that the risen Christ gives to us. As Jesus explained the meaning of his passion, death, and resurrec on to his disciples he does the same for us: “Thus it is wri en that the Christ would suffer and rise from the dead on the third day and that repentance, for the forgiveness of sin, would be preached in his name to all the na ons, beginning from Jerusalem. You are witnesses to these things” (24:46-48). We pray that the Blessed Virgin Mary, Our Lady of the Holy Angels, will strengthen us in our call to be witnesses to the resurrec on and the gi of peace that the Lord promises to his disciples.

Our second collec on is for Maintenance. The needs of maintaining our parish plant; with as many buildings and structures that our parish has, is an ongoing and constant work. The Maintenance Collec on helps us to a end to the many unexpected repairs and improvements that become necessary in the course of the year. In these past two weeks we have had to make major repairs to the steps of the school and we have also installed a security system to provide for the safety and security of our parish church. Attention 2nd Grade Parents: As weekly mass is an integral part of our lives as Catholics, it is important that our children attend weekly mass. This is especially important as they prepare for the Sacrament of First Eucharist and equally important after they receive their Sacrament. While our parish offers many masses during each weekend for us to attend, during the next several weeks, we require that all children who will soon receive the Sacrament of First Eucharist, attend the Sunday 9:30 AM mass together as a group. Attending mass together shall begin on Sunday, February 25, 2018 and continue through each of the remaining weekends of preparation.
These dates that your children will be attending 9:30 AM mass together are as follows:
4/15, 4/22, 4/29
We require at least one parent or guardian to accompany and stay with the child during Mass. When you arrive, please sign the attendance form that will be located at the front and rear entrances of the church. After Mass please bring your child to their respective classroom for their weekly instruction.
Thank you for your cooperation and support. We Are STILL in NEED of Catechists! Our ability to provide effective programming for so many of our children enrolled in our program is only made possible if we have enough volunteers to serve as catechists. Please carefully review the information in the registration letter with regard to our need for Catechists and return the Catechist Volunteer Form that was enclosed in the registration packet to the ministry center ASAP. If you would like more detailed information about becoming a catechist, please contact Trish at [email protected] or leave a message at the Parish Ministry Center 973-256-5200.

The Fisherman’s Bride Book Signing Award-winning author and parishioner Catherine Magia will be discussing her book The Fisherman’s Bride: Untold Story of the Wife of Simon Peter on Sunday, April 22nd at 2:30 PM in St. Francis Hall.
Catherine has belonged to Holy Angels parish since the age of eight.
This is the story of the nameless wife of the man who would become St. Peter, the first Apostle. It is the story of a woman’s struggle with economic hard times, her husband’s restlessness, and
oppression of the Roman Empire over her people. Then her life is changed when her mother is saved by a miracle — by a carpenter who speaks with understanding and acts with compassion. A man who can inspire the extraordinary.
Catherine will be available to sign books after the presentation.

Cursillo 2018 A 3-Day Course in Christianity Cursillo is an international movement. Literally tens of thousands of Catholics have "made" a Cursillo and found it to be a life changing event in their adult
Christian life. Not only do people come away from the experience knowing more about faith, they come away with a sense that they belong to a great community of believers with whom they can share and grow in their faith, hope and love.
Cursillo is an experience that can give you a renewed understanding of our faith. Its goal is to make faith alive for those who participate in this course. If you are looking for such an experience, there are dates available for both women and men.
Men’s 193rd Cursillo Thursday evening, May 3-Sunday, May 6, 2018
Women’s 177th Cursillo Thursday evening, May 31-Sunday, June 3, 2018

Volunteers Needed St. Vincent’s Nursing Home & Rehab Center is set quietly away on E. Lindsley Road in Cedar Grove. The setting is a fitting atmosphere to care for wonderful human beings who are in need of assistance in their daily lives. The excellent rehabilitation program offers therapy to restore quality of life to those who have suffered a stroke or physical injury.
In addition to the employees of St. Vincent’s, the lives of the residents are touched by the kindness of volunteers. These generous and caring people transport residents back and forth to Mass and to a myriad of activities. In some cases, a volunteer may be someone’s sole visitor. Volunteers allow a resident to communicate and laugh with others, be present for special musical activities, play bingo or create a handmade poncho or an individual flower garden. In order to make these wonderful opportunities available to residents, volunteers are necessary to transport an individual and chat along the way.
If you are interested, please call Sr. June at 973-754-4831. You will never dream of how important you can be to others.
