CD OF THE WEEK Understanding My Value ToMy Church Community

Laura Humphries, Parish Life Coordinator

May 15th is the feast of St. Isidore the Farmer. Born inMadrid in 1070, Isidore spent his life tending the farmof a wealthy landowner. He wrote no books, foundedno religious community, performed no great works. Heand his wife Maria had one son who died in childhood.Isidore won the respect of all who knew him becauseof his love for God, for others, and all creation. He waskind to the poor, giving them food even when he hadlittle. One winter day he opened a sack of corn he wascarrying and poured half of it on the ground for hungrybirds. Some thought this foolish but when he arrived atthe mill, his sack was full.

Isidore spent much time in prayer, both in the fieldsand in the local church. It is said that when he stayedtoo long in church, angels did the farm chores for him.Isidore was 60 years old when he died in 1130. He wascanonized in 1622, and is the patron saint of farmers.

An excerpt from The Little White Book

We can all make a difference, each one of us. We don’thave to do grandiose things. We don’t have to make alot of money and give it all to the poor. It is the littlethings that can go a long way to help in this world. Wecan teach our children that little kindnesses sometimesare worth gold. Reaching out to others, someone whois alone or different, is sometimes courageous andbold. Just as the angels helped Isidore, God will helpus be the people he has asked us to be, if we let him.

Bryce Baldwin, father of Deborah Metzger.
