Grateful Stewardsof God’s Gifts . . .

Laura Humphries,Parish Life & Stewardship Director

“Look up at the sky and count the stars, if you can.Just so... shall your descendants be”

(Genesis 15: 5).

God promises Abram a great reward. But Abram pouts, what good will such gifts be if I have no heirs? Then Godshows him the stars and says, “Your descendants shall beas numerous as these.” Abram believed God’s promise eventhough there was scant evidence to support it. God throughJesus has made similar “wild promises” to us: death is notthe end of life: love is stronger than hatred and violence;goodness will ultimately triumph over evil; God will neverabandon us. Sometimes we see very little evidence tosupport the fulfillment of such extravagant claims. But aGod who could create literally billions and billions of starsis, if nothing else, pretty extravagant! May we, like Abram, believe in God’s promises. An excerpt from Living With Christ

God loves us and wants us to be happy; he gives us giftsand talents to use while we are here on this earth to makeour lives better and the lives of those around us better. Godasks us to love each other and if we really do this andspread God’s love to others, we can overcome many badthings in our world. Hate and violence seem to be everywhere, but as long as God is in our lives, they will never overcomeus. Goodness will overcome evil, we can count on that, itmight take a while, but it will happen. God promised thathis church would never perish and we are his church. Wemust have faith that God will take care of us and neverabandon us, we must believe in his promises. Sometimesit seems as though all the world’s problems might swallowus up, but as long as we have faith in God it will come outokay in the end.
