We have to desire God in order to recognize God. We have to open our hearts, minds, and souls to His Presence so that we can be rejuvenated and refreshed. But we cannot do this if we are distracted or napping. We have to be awake and alert! As a young child eagerly watches for and anticipates that arrival of their parent home, so too we must watch for God’s presence. If the anticipation of God’s arrival does not excite us and rouse us, then we need to ask why. The wise person keeps vigilant watch, knowing that in the end they will not be disappointed.

An Act of Spiritual Communion My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive you sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.

National Vocations Awareness Week Nov 1-Nov 7, 2020

Your Unique Mission Why does it matter that people discover their God-given vocations? Because the Church relies on the unique con-tribution of every soul. As St. John Henry Newman fa-mously reflected: “God has created me to do some spe-cial service; God has committed some work to me which has not been committed to another. I HAVE A MISSION.”

Confirmation

Please pray for the following who will be receiving their Confirmation on Nov 15th.

St James: Isaac Bleess, Sarah Hess, Kalen Kraft and Benjamin Meek

BISHOP'S ANNUAL APPEAL Thank you to everyone who is supporting diocesan min-istries through the Appeal. Our prayers are with you as we navigate these challenging times together. As of October 19, the Appeal raised $1,198,679 in gifts and pledges toward the goal of $1,300,000. Every dollar raised goes directly to ministries that support our Catholic faith and is not used for any other purpose. Will you help these ministries meet their funding needs? Visit www.stcdio.org/appeal.

INSPIRATION FOR THE WEEK

Do you consider yourself spiritually mature and awake? We can become a little presumptuous in the Christian life and even put a little too much stock in God’s mercy. We foolishly believe that in the end, God is going to give eve-ryone a passing grade and all will be well. Therefore, until that time comes, I can remain mediocre in my faith disciplines and put aside the effort needed to go from okay to excellent. We can be accomplished procrastina-tors! The meeting of God face-to-face either when we die or when Christ comes again, whichever comes first, is not going to be as casual as we may think. There is no earthly meeting in our experience that can even compare to what it will be like to meet God. To say that we are going to be caught up in awe is an understatement. But, there is something even more significant than that to consider: if we haven’t learned how to be attentive , rec-ognize, and long for the holy of holies in this life, what makes us think we are going to recognize and desire it in the next? Pray for the wisdom to act prudently.

Stewardship as a Way of Life: "Therefore, stay awake, for you know neither the day nor the hour.” - Matthew 25:13

Many of us have put off doing something because we think we are too busy. We’ve all said, “I’ll do it later when I have time.” Unfortunately, too many of us apply this attitude to our faith. Jesus’ call is urgent, in the here and now, in your current circumstances. Don’t delay. How is God calling you to use your gifts today? None of us is guaranteed tomorrow.

Artificial Intelligence

We pray that the progress of

robotics and artificial intelligence

may always serve humankind.

Dedicated to the Poor Souls in Purgatory

Today .... And every day.... we are grateful for our military service personnel, past and present, and the families who support them.

PRAYER FOR PRIESTS

Lord, give us holy priests; You Yourself maintain them in holiness. O Divine and Great High Priest, may the power of Your mercy accompany them every-where and protect them from the devil's snares which are continually being set for the souls of priests. May the power of Your mercy, O Lord, shatter and bring to naught all that might tarnish the sanctity of priests, for You can do all things. Amen

Thirty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time, Cycle A

Sunday, November 8, 2020

First Reading Wisdom 6:12-16 Wisdom will come to those who seek it.

Responsorial Psalm Psalm 63:2,3-4,5-6,7-8 Our souls are thirsting for God.

Second Reading 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 (shorter form: 1 Thessalonians 4:13-14) God will raise all those who have died.

Gospel Reading Matthew 25:1-13 Jesus tells the parable of the wise and foolish virgins, teaching his disciples the importance of being prepared to receive the Kingdom of Heaven.

Background on the Gospel Reading

In this week’s Gospel, Jesus talks about what it means to be prepared to receive the Kingdom of Heav-en. This week’s reading follows a series of warnings and predictions by Jesus about the coming of the Son of Man. Jesus wants his disciples to understand that the exact day and time cannot be predicted. He teaches the disciples that they must remain vigilant so that they will not be caught unprepared.

When thinking about the parable of the wise and foolish virgins, it is important to consider the first-century wedding traditions of Palestine. Scholars tell us that it was the custom of the day for young maidens—friends and family members of the bride—to meet the bridegroom when he came to bring his bride to her new home.

As with many of Jesus’ parables, several levels of interpretation are possible. In last week’s Gospel, we heard Jesus warn against following the example of the Pharisees and scribes. If read in the context of early Christianity’s struggle to define itself against Pharisaic Judaism, this parable is a continuing critique of Judaism. It suggests that the Jewish leaders were like the foolish virgins, unprepared to meet Jesus, the bridegroom of Israel.

In the chapter preceding this parable, however, Jesus warns about the destruction of Jerusalem, the trib-

ulation of the end times, and the coming of the Son of Man. When read in this context, today’s parable

is a warning to the Christian community to remain vigilant and prepared to receive Jesus, the Son of

Man who will return at the end of time. This interpretation is supported by the reference to the delay of

the bridegroom. The Christian community for whom Matthew wrote this Gospel was coming to terms

with the realization that the promise of Jesus’ return would not be fulfilled within their lifetimes. The

question remains for us to ask ourselves, Are we ready to receive Jesus? Will we be prepared to receive

him?
