The Twenty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time - Gospel
Reflection
The incident in today's Gospel is recorded only by Mark. The
key line is what the crowd says at the end: "He has done all
things well." In the Greek, this echoes the creation story, recalling that God saw all the things he had done and declared th em
good.
Mark also deliberately evokes Isaiah's promise, which we hear in today's First Reading that God will make the deaf
hear and the mute speak. He even uses a Greek word to describe the man's condition (mogilalon = "speech impediment") that's
only found in one other place in the Bible—in the Greek translation of today's Isaiah passage, where the prophet describes the
"dumb" singing. The crowd recognizes that Jesus is doing what the prophet had foretold. But Mark wants us to see something
far greater—that, to use the words from today's First Reading: "Here is your God." Notice how personal and physical the drama
is in the Gospel. Our focus is drawn to a hand, a finger, ears, a tongue, spitting. In Jesus, Mark shows us, God has truly co me in
the flesh. What He has done is to make all things new, a new creation. As Isaiah promised, He has made the living waters of
baptism flow in the desert of the world. He has set captives free from their sins, as we sing in today's Psalm. He has come t hat
rich and poor might dine together in the Eucharistic feast, as James tells us in today's Epistle. He has done for each of us what
He did for that deaf mute. He has opened our ears to hear the Word of God, and loosed our tongues that we might sing praises
to Him.
Let us then, in the Eucharist, again give thanks to our glorious Lord Jesus Christ. Let us say with Isaiah, Here is our
God, He comes to save us. Let us be rich in faith, that we might inherit the kingdom promised to those who love Him. By Dr. Scott Hahn—St. Paul Center for Biblical Theology

9 AM Mass. Sacred Heart School’s 8th Grade students will serve at
the altar, share the readings, offer the petitions and bring up the
Gifts. We hope that many of you will be able to join us in this
Eucharistic celebration.
Our students offer this prayer in memory of those who gave their
lives on September 11th:
Loving God of Peace: On this anniversary of unbelievable sorrow,
comfort those who mourn, and guide our hearts toward healing
and hope. Remind us of the love of Christ, love which leapt over
cultural and ethnic boundaries to feed the hungry, seek the lost and
care for the least. Make of Your children one human family, bound
together in the work of justice and peacemaking. Make us one with
the Light that shines in the darkness and illumines a path toward
understanding and reconciliation. Let love be our genuine call.
Amen.

Below are just a couple of the CD titles available in our Lighthouse Media Collection:
The Seven Pillars of Catholic Spirituality – Matthew
Kelly
Would you like to deepen your faith? Matthew Kelly will revitalize your spiritual life by taking you on the adventure of a lifetime! In a bold, practical and inspiring way, he will help you rediscover the true meaning of life as expressed in the seven pillars of authentic Catholic spirituality. “Catholicism is a way of life,” Matthew says, “designed by God to help you become all you can be.”
Who Do You Say That I Am? – Fr. Robert Barron
A sought-after speaker on the spiritual life, Fr. Robert Barron here illuminates and explains the conviction of the Catholic Faith that Jesus of Nazareth is the promised Messiah and the revelation of God become man. He shows how Jesus fulfills the four tasks of the Messiah according to the Old and New Testaments, and how the living legacy of Christ, God and Messiah, is proclaimed by the Church. We kindly ask for a donation of $4.00 per book (or otherwise specified suggested donation), $3.00 per CD, $2.00 per booklet and $0.50 per pamphlet so that we may continue this program. Please make all checks out to “OLMM.” Won’t you reach out and help bring someone home?
