Preview of Next Sunday’s Readings Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time

October 27, 2019 First reading: Sirach 35:12-14, 16-18 Second reading: Timothy 4:6-8 Gospel: Luke 18:9-14 A reading from the Book of Sirach The LORD is a God of justice, who knows no favorites. Though not unduly partial toward the weak, yet he hears the cry of the oppressed. The Lord is not deaf to the wail of the orphan, nor to the widow when she pours out her complaint. The one who serves God willingly is heard; his petition reaches the heavens. The prayer of the lowly pierces the clouds; it does not rest till it reaches its goal, nor will it withdraw till the Most High responds, judges justly and affirms the right, and the Lord will not delay. A reading from the Letter of Saint Paul to Timothy Beloved: I am already being poured out like a libation, and the time of my departure is at hand. I have competed well; I have finished the race; I have kept the faith. From now on the crown of righteousness awaits me, which the Lord, the just judge, will award to me on that day, and not only to me, but to all who have longed for his appearance. At my first defense no one ap-peared on my behalf, but everyone deserted me. May it not be held against them! But the Lord stood by me and gave me strength, so that through me the proclamation might be com-pleted and all the Gentiles might hear it. And I was rescued from the lion's mouth. The Lord will rescue me from every evil threat and will bring me safe to his heavenly kingdom. To him be glory forever and ever. Amen. A reading from the holy Gospel according to Luke Jesus addressed this parable to those who were convinced of their own righteousness and despised everyone else. "Two peo-ple went up to the temple area to pray; one was a Pharisee and the other was a tax collector. The Pharisee took up his position and spoke this prayer to himself, 'O God, I thank you that I am not like the rest of humanity -- greedy, dishonest, adulterous -- or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week, and I pay tithes on my whole income.' But the tax collector stood off at a distance and would not even raise his eyes to heaven but beat his breast and prayed, 'O God, be merciful to me a sinner.' I tell you, the latter went home justified, not the former; for whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and the one who humbles him-self will be exalted."

Pray for the Dead PRAYERS ARE REQUESTED for our Parishioners,

Mary Gallager and Anna Alvarez Our most sincere sympathy is extended to their families.

Religious Education Office Twenty-Ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time October 20, 2019 Sunday’s Gospel, Luke Reflection for Parents What happens when our children pester us long enough for something? If it’s not life threatening and they’ve bugged us long enough, we usually find a way of giving in without losing face. We know just how the judge in Luke’s Gospel felt! Let the story of the persistent widow strengthen your prayers. Even if they are not answered in just the way we ask, God hears our prayers and cares for us. Bringing the Good News Into Your Family Be faithful praying with your children. Teach them simple prayers for starting their day, grace before meals, and prayers at bedtime. Say prayers every day. For a collection of rituals, bless-ings, prayers, and traditions meant to encour-age and inspire Catholic families to keep prayer at the heart of their home, check out Our Family Prays. Question of the Week Children: How often do you put off chores until you are forced to do them? Who is hurt by such a decision? Adults: Whose needs might you be failing to listen to right now?

This Sunday The RCIA Program will sponsor the Donut Sale. Next weekend The Parents of The Youth Confirmation Program will sponsor the Donut Sale. Thank You, to all organizations who give so much of their time to support the Donut Sale.

Know the signs of denial Denial is a commonly used defense mechanism for abuse vic-tims. Because they want to believe that things will go back to normal, victims often feel trapped into just allowing the situa-tion to play out. Fear of change can be overwhelming, espe-cially if the victim has been manipulated by his or her abuser. Victims may also struggle with accepting what’s happening because they know their abuser closely, as a family member or friend. It’s important to recognize the signs of denial and how to break through those barriers that can keep a victim from true healing. To learn more, get a copy of the VIRTUS® article “The Many Faces of Denial, Part 2,” at http://www.la-archdiocese.org/org/protecting/Pages/VIRTUS-Current-Online-Articles.aspx.

School News

We are kindly asking for donations to support families in our Youth Confirmation Program who are in need of financial

assistance to pay for their tuition fees. The $150.00 tuition fee covers class materials

and retreat expenses for the year. Are you able to sponsor a student?

Are you able to donate a portion of the tuition? Any amount you are able to donate would be greatly

appreciated and would ease the financial responsibility from the students and their families.

We appreciate your consideration to donate to our students. If you are interested in making a donation,

please contact Roy Ramirez, Youth Confirmation Director at (562)879-9478.

Thank you so much for your generosity and support.
