The Catholic Church is the Church founded by Jesus Christ; it is the same Church mentioned in the New Testament of the Christian Bible. The term "Catholic" means "according to the whole;" it was used early in the Church's history to distinguish her from a number of other gatherings whose teachings and practices were not true to the authoritative teachings of Christ's apostles. All human persons are invited and encouraged to accept the salvation offered by Jesus through His one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church by living the sacramental life offered by the Catholic Church. It is the mission of Our Lady of the Prairie Catholic Church to offer this life to the people of Belle Plaine, Minnesota and its environs. If you would like to become Catholic, please contact Fr. Brian Lynch in person or by email at: [email protected].

A Message from the Pastor...

St. Patrick

Patrick was born in Great Britain about 390 A.D. At the age of 16, Patrick was kidnapped by Irish pirates who took him to Ireland, where he spent 6 years as a shepherd slave. During that time Patrick suffered from solitude and the elements, and through this experience he got religion. One day Patrick heard a voice saying, “Behold your ship is ready.” He was led by God to the east coast of Ireland, where he boarded a ship ready to set sail. He spent 3 days at sea, landed in France, and travelled with members of the pagan crew across France for nearly a month. He was able to escape from them after they had reached Italy. Upon escaping, Patrick began traveling back toward Britain with the intention of visiting his family; however, on the way he came across a monastery on a small island off the coast of France where he stayed for a few years. Patrick eventually left the monastery and returned to his family in Britain. Once there he had a dream in which a man gave him a letter, and in reading the letter, Patrick imagined the voices of the pagan Irish people calling him back to the land of his captivity. He became convicted of his calling to return there as a missionary; however, he was not yet ordained. He went to France to study; however, it would be at least 14 years before he returned to Ireland. Eventually Patrick was ordained a bishop and sent to Ireland in about 432 A.D. After about nine years of missionary work in Ireland, Patrick visited Rome to consult with and receive the blessing of Pope Leo. In Rome he received relics of the Apostles Sts. Peter and Paul, which he brought back to Ireland to help demonstrate his authority in establishing Catholic churches. Shortly after returning to Ireland, Patrick was given some land near Armagh in Northern Ireland and established a monastery there. Patrick loved monasticism and found the younger people of Ireland receptive to it. As a consequence, many monasteries sprung up in Ireland. Patrick seems to have died of natural causes in his mid seventies. Although the year of his death is not known exactly, his entrance into Heaven has always been celebrated on March 17. Though hundreds of years of legends have portrayed St. Patrick as a mythical Irish folk hero, his enduring legacy is having done something that the Roman empire itself failed to do. By his missionary preaching and introduction of Latin to the Irish people, Patrick civilized the pagans of Hibernia and united the far-flung island to Europe. (This is a summary of Ireland’s Saint: The Essential Biography of St. Patrick by Bury and Sweeney) All the Best in Christ, Fr. Brian Lynch

March is the month of St. Joseph! Here is a beautiful, powerful, ancient prayer recently shared on Relevant Radio: Oh St. Joseph, whose protection is so great, so strong, so prompt before the throne of God, I place in you all my interest and desires. Oh, St. Joseph, do assist me by your powerful intercession, and obtain for me from your Divine Son all spiritual blessings, through Jesus Christ, Our Lord. So that, having engaged here below your heavenly power, I may offer my thanksgiving and homage to the most loving of Fathers. Oh, St. Joseph, I never weary contemplating you, and Jesus asleep in your arms; I dare not approach while he reposes near your heart. Press Him in my name and kiss His fine head for me and ask Him to return the kiss when I draw my dying breath. St. Joseph, patron of departing souls---Pray for me. This prayer may be said as a novena for nine days.

The “Know it all” News

Our Lady of the Prairie Catholic Church and School, 200 East Church Street, Belle Plaine, Minnesota 56011

I continue to use my Tuesday mornings in the classrooms to read our students Bible stories. As you may recall, I often pray with the 5-6th grade students using the Gospel passage we will hear at Mass on Wednesday morning. In the other classrooms I read stories from children's Bibles, often at their request. Recently, in the 1-2 grade classroom, I had a sustained fit of laughing that was embar-rassing. It was set off because I tried to use the game of musical chairs to explain the "casting of lots" used to identify Jonah as the cause of the stormy sea, and one of the students voiced disbelief that they would have played musical chairs on a ship in danger of

sinking! It was a reasonable response, but I certainly didn't mean it that literally. Anyhow, I guess it was a chance for the kids to see that I am human, perhaps more than they had thought. All the Best in Christ, Fr. Brian Lynch

our play corner we have been busy making Valentine's for everyone in the school. We are excited to see what our play corner changes to in March! This week we are also talking about dental health, and we will be making a project to help us remember to brush our teeth!

- Mrs. Urlick ————————

What a winter! We have been playing catch up all month in our room. In reading both grades are working on long vowels, first grade is learning about silent E and second grade is working on vowel pairs. In math we are work-ing on measurement and double digit addi-tion. We are excited to start the Read-a-thon, watch for information to come home soon. Thank you to everyone who attended the Gala!

- Mrs. Zabel ————————

Saturday is the official start of the Iditarod. Students are learning about Alaska, the race, and picked a musher to track throughout the race. This unit is a highlight for many. We will

be praying for the mushers, the dogs, and for good weather. In math, the third graders are double digit multiplication. The fourth graders are working on long division, with and without remainders. In science each student is re-searching a type of severe storm, hurricanes or tornadoes. We will present our findings to the class next week.

- Ms. Cates ————————

The 5th and 6th graders are excited about the upcoming Read-a-Thon sponsored by the Our Lady of the Prairie School HSA. They can't wait for the "Reading Party" on March 4th! Students have been working on the study skill of note taking. For our latest book report students have been reading a book from the "Who Was..." series and taking notes on new vocabulary and interesting facts. They will be using their notes to write a report on a president or first lady and give a presentation on the person they read about.

Mrs. Alessio _______________

We are entertaining warm thoughts in 5th and 6th grade as we continue our current Life Science unit - Plants! Through the use of mul-tiple resources we are gathering information about the different parts of the plant as well as exploring specific plants from around the world. As the students have been sharing their findings with the class it reminds us all that winter will, eventually, end and the green images we see on the screen will in fact re-appear outside. Again, eventually. For Social Studies we are on the brink of War in the North American British Colonies. The 5th and 6th graders are learning about what it meant to be a Loyalist or a Patriot during the time of the American Revolution and are seeing the points of view of the conflict through the eyes of those involved.

- Mr. Lopahs ———————

This week kindergarten met a new superkid! Her name is Ettabetta and she loves the letter Ee! We learned that she loves to do puzzles and solve riddles. In math we are learning about what makes different numbers 1-10. In
