Dear Parishioners, This weekend we celebrate Independence Day. It marks the two-hundred and twenty fourth anniversary of the Declara-tion of Independence.

Throughout our history as a nation we often have significant challenges that engage the larger community. The current struggles with COVID-19, racial justice, and economic losses are examples of this. I suspect that this year will go down in history as one of the most pivot-al. Against this background other issues such as immigration policy, abortion, and church sponsored education have also come to the fore-front with rulings by the United States Supreme Court this past June Often these challenges are framed in either practical considerations or in the sorting out of future directions. But usually, an overlooked piece of the conversation are the questions about what are the values that are most important to us as a people. We are a nation that prizes freedom but also prizes respect for the law. We are a nation that is largely immigrant based (most of us have ancestors who were immigrants or we ourselves are) but also contains values and traditions that are unique to our heritage. We are always recreating ourselves yet seek to root ourselves in the past. In a sense, we hold a great many tensions in our existence. We are made up of fifty sovereign states and yet are one country. One of the most important things we can do is pray for our nation. Pray that guidance will be given to all in authority. Pray that we will be a nation that truly holds, “All men are created equal.” And that we live out that creed by cherishing and protecting the most vulnerable persons from conception to natural death. Pray that we remember the words of Abraham Lincoln, “Though passion may have strained, it must not break the bonds of our affection. The mystic chords of memory will swell again when touched, as they surely will, by the better angels of our nature.” A century later another American President, John F. Kennedy, told Americans, “Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country.” He understood that we are only as strong as our generous impulses. If a nation simply becomes a setting in which we take, without giving, then we will inevitably fail. We need each other. These months have brought home the understanding that we need each other. Something as simple as keeping social distance and good hygiene become acts of respect for others. If I can borrow on the sentiments of Kennedy, this parish needs you as well. In so many ways you have been generous with time and talent and treasure during these days. For this I am grateful. I am especially appreciative of the many volunteers on the Re-opening team. We need them to keep everyone safe and to allow religious services to go forward. The truth is, we need more. Many more! I suspect that the current restrictions which require registration and sanitizing will probably continue for many months, if not longer. Our volunteers need more help so that we do not burn out. The work is not difficult. Welcoming before Mass takes less than half an hour. Cleaning and sanitizing the church after each Mass takes about 20-25 minutes. We are getting this down to a system. If more people would commit to just one Mass each weekend (or every other weekend) it would make a big difference. In a special way, I want to appeal to our young people. This is an easy way to give back to this community that has nurtured your faith Life. Anyone interested in volunteering can contact the parish through the website. I pray your weekend is truly blessed. In Christ,

Father Mike
