2018 - 2019 Rooted in Christ: We Belong, We Believe, We Become
Principal’s Message:
Dear OLW Families:
Once again, with Holy Week now fast approaching during this fourth week of Lent,
we remember Jesus in his most dire hour of need, but we also remember and
celebrate His Resurrection. It is in this same hopeful vein that the Grade 2 and 7
teachers, Father Coyle and Father Joseph have been widening our students’
perspectives to focus less on the daily distractions of life and to see, hear and
emulate what Jesus does by example. April is a season that promises renewal, hope
and growth. Our staff and students fully embrace these gifts and processes, and
they have added an emphasis on action that is rooted in justice. The Our Lady of
Wisdom Catholic School community looks forward to further preparing our students
for the important Sacraments of Holy First Communion and Confirmation, as our
students in Grade 2 and 7 ready themselves for the next levels of their respective
faith journeys. It’s with much admiration and pride that the school community
applauds much of the strong student leadership that has already been
demonstrated. Specifically, the school would like to acknowledge Student Council
for organizing and planning this year’s Autism Awareness event, the Me to We
committee’s pledge to “Create Change” and provide goats globally for those in need
and the Eco team’s no nonsense approach to energy conservation during Earth Hour,
planned Eco assembly, City of Toronto Cleanup Day, and upcoming recycling
initiatives for used pens and batteries. We very much look forward to leading our
Lenten mass during this fourth week of Lent with our community schools and
grounding students in the reality of what this time means in the liturgical season, a
time to reflect, repent and as Pope Francis asserts, to prepare “in the knowledge
that our being conformed to Christ is a priceless gift of God’s mercy.” Thank you to
our parent volunteers who have so generously given of their time to make our Grade
8 hot dog fundraisers a phenomenal success, all in an effort to assist those who may
face barriers. It will no doubt be a typically busy month at OLW, but a fruitful and
rewarding one, as we also get ready to support and cheer on our Épelle-Moi French
Bee team and our Intermediate Science Fair participants, as well as, preparing our
Grade 4 students to write the ETIMSS Science and math assessment.
Sincerely,
W. Kwon

HOLY THURSDAY SERVICE
Intermediate students: Arielle T-H., Milan R., Kiara E. Gabriel B., Eduardo V-M., Dhani G.,
Christian R., Claudia N., Mira G., Alexis M., Ava S., Admire Z., have been planning and practicing
for a very solemn and meaningful Holy Thursday Service together with staff members, Mme.
Suzan, Mme. Mari Berje, Mme. Sui, and Mr. Kwon. On Thursday, April 18th, all students will take
part in a liturgy that involves a great deal of reflection and a prayerful response in three parts,
accented by beautiful music, “The Power of the Cross” and “You Raise Me Up.” The litugy of the
Word will then be followed by a revised French Version of the Stations of the Cross/Le Chemin
De LA Croix acted out and narrated by our intermediates.
VISITORS TO THE SCHOOL:
A reminder that “ALL” visitors must enter the school building through the front doors by using
the video monitoring system and sign in at the main office. Entrance through the school yard
doors or other entrances and exits, i.e. the Kindergarten wing is strictly PROHIBITED. In the
interest of safety for all students and to ensure that classes are uninterrupted, we need
everyone's total co-operation and understanding on this matter. If an item is being dropped off
for your child or pick up is required for an appointment, please come by the office. We will
contact the class directly.
If you need to speak with your child’s teacher or the principal, kindly call and make an
appointment. We are glad to meet with you at a mutually convenient time.

PLANNING AHEAD FOR THE 2019-2020 ACADEMIC YEAR
Please assist OLW in planning for our 2019-2020 academic year, specifically in finalizing our staffing and
class organization. It is important that you contact the main office and update the school if you will be
moving out of the area or if your child will be attending a different school as of September 2019. A
timely update will assist us in having up to date enrollment numbers. Thank you to all of those families
who have registered their Year 1 and/or Year 2 students in our school, and we look forward to welcoming
your children in the year ahead.
WELCOME TO KINDERGARTEN 2019
We are pleased to welcome you and your child to Our Lady of Wisdom Catholic School. Our school is dedicated to
nurturing your child academically, physically and spiritually through our faith-based curriculum and caring Catholic
environment.
We look forward to officially welcoming your child when the new school year begins in September.
To assist your family in preparing your child for this exciting new experience, we invite you to join us at our annual
Welcome to Kindergarten Parent /Student Orientation Session on:
Date: Wednesday, May 15, 2019
Time: 6 p.m.
Location: Our Lady of Wisdom CES, gym
This will be a wonderful opportunity for you and your child to familiarize yourselves with your new school and to
participate in a variety of fun and engaging learning activities.
The Toronto Catholic District School Board (TCDSB) is pleased to be working with the Learning Partnership in
offering the Welcome to Kindergarten Program in all elementary schools across TCDSB.
The goal of the program is to provide pre-school children with the resources and experiences to begin their formal
education with a foundation in literacy nurtured in their home. Your child will receive a variety of early literacy
resources in a canvas bag (e.g., magnetic letters and numbers, books, crayons, scissors, glue, paper, play dough and
more). Parents will learn strategies for using the resources at home with their child, in order to prepare for the
upcoming school year 2018/19. The orientation sessions are provided by school staff in conjunction with community
partners.
We look forward to seeing you and your child at this orientation session!

SCHOOL BUS RIDER ON-SITE SAFETY TRAINING:
Thank you to Lisa and her colleagues from the Toronto Student Transportation Group for two very entertaining and
informative bus safety presentations, which took place on Thursday, March 21, for the Primary and
Junior/Intermediate students. Students were instructed on many of the do’s and don’t’s of bus safety and what to
do when faced with an emergency on the bus, specifically what to do in the case of a split evacuation, how to avoid
danger zones around the school bus and all emergency related evacuation situations. Students came away from both
presentations with renewed confidence to make sound, informed decisions when it comes to school bus safety, an
increased knowledge of the safe rider program, the importance of the bus driver and the need to demonstrate
respect for their role at all times and follow safety rules on the bus and around roads.
2018 - 2019 Rooted in Christ: We Belong, We Believe, We Become
ICFF NELLY ET SIMON FRENCH FILM EXCURSION FOR GR. 4 AND 5
Grade 4 and 5 students from both Mlle. O and Mme. Sui’s classes will be taking part in the ICFF (Italian
Contemporary Film Festival) to view the French Film, Nelly Et Simon. Students will enjoy an original fun film in
French which explores the sleuth or mystery genre in which characters go on a quest to determine the existence
of the Abominable Snowman behind the backdrop of late 1950’s Quebec and the Himalayas. This is an excellent
French Learning Opportunity for the students in which they get to explore the mystery genre, discuss which
elements of film they enjoyed and the reasons why, aligned with the Grade 4 and 5 FI Ontario curriculum as they
interpret messages for a variety of purposes and Speak to interact.
AUTISM AWARENESS 2019
Autism, for some a mysterious disorder which is easily misunderstood. Not the case anymore, thanks to members
of OLW Student Council and Mlle. Falsetti. Their presentation had at its core the intent to build empathy in all and
present Autism as an often misunderstood spectrum disorder which affects the way a person thinks and behaves
around others. Moreover, the presentation elicited from the audience responses on how people with Autism ought
to be treated and supported, as well as highlighting that bullying is often a sad reality 63% of Autistic students
from the ages of six to fifteen.
2018 - 2019 Rooted in Christ: We Belong, We Believe, We Become
STUDENT LEADERSHIP:
OLW ECO team initiative:
The Eco Club is planning various initiatives for the month of April. They will kick start their
initiatives with Earth Hour on March 29. Classes at OLW played a part in conserving energy,
even if for 60 minutes, by turning off all non-essential lighting between 10 and 11 a.m. Earth Day
will officially be celebrated at OLW on Tuesday, April 23rd. Students are being challenged to
bring in used pens, markers, highlighters and batteries. The Eco Club will ensure that they are
recycled properly. If students meet the challenge, they will be rewarded with a complimentary
Civvies day! Please stay tuned for a calendar of events.
City of Toronto Cleanup Day/Live Green Toronto on Friday, April 26, 2019:
It's a perfect time to bring students and teachers together to clean your school yard or neighbourhood
park after a long, cold winter. Classes will be invited to take part in de-cluttering and beautifying the
school grounds on April 26, 2019.
OLW will receive a free school cleanup kit with litter bags, blue recycling bags and two boxes of nitrile
gloves. All registered schools will be acknowledged for their support.
2018 - 2019 Rooted in Christ: We Belong, We Believe, We Become
Me to We Committee:
OLW acknowledges the collective efforts of Mlle. Ongpin and the We Day Extra-
curricular Team, as they wrap up their next global social justice minded initiative!
WE create change, as the WE team kicks off their coin drive to help raise money
for education and clean water. Did you know a large coffee cup full of loonies is
enough to send six children to school in some of the countries our organization
helps? The WE team was successful during their last campaign during the
holidays. They were able to raise enough money to buy a goat, clean water, and
provide a child with education with the help of the OLW community. Now they are
encouraging students to look around for loose change to contribute to the same
cause. They will be collecting coins throughout the month of April, hoping that
small change can make a big change in someone’s life.

ROBOTICS CLUBS
Students in Grades 4 and 5 banded together to design and program another guided Lego project with
our We Do 2.0 kits in which they investigated “How some organisms contribute to the life cycle of
plants?’ They worked together in small groups to create and program a model of a bee and a flower to
simulate the relationship between pollinators and plants with the expectation afterwards to explain their
model, how it works and what they commands they included in their programming.
Additionally, other students had some fun with the Ozobot EVO, as they explored the online
“Playground” application and challenged themselves with brainteasers, such as, the “Bridge” and the “Tile
Master” maze in which they had to select and drop a variety of Ozocodes to lead the Ozobot from a
starting point to the finish line, within a finite time and number of movements.

SCHOOL AND PARISH CONNECTION:
MONTHLY VISIT FROM FR. JOSEPH
Mlle. Falsetti and Ms. Greco’s Grade 7 students welcomed Father Joseph for his monthly visit. This
month’s visit focused on the Lenten Journey, as Fr. Joseph explained the significance of Lent as a season
which begins with Ash Wednesday, signaling a time of waiting for 40 days until Easter. Fr. Joseph
explained that “Lenzo” in Greek and Latin refers to the season of spring and in German refers to a
lengthening of days. Lent is a reminder of our need for penance, fasting and prayer to be brought out in
actions of charity, as we sacrifice and give to those people in need. Students also learned that Lent is
older than Christmas in terms of its celebrations, which started approximately in the 2nd century. The
forty of days of fasting is a form of penance, and it is ultimately a time to recognize the death and
resurrection of Jesus. Thank you Fr. Joseph for your commitment to assisting our students re-ground
themselves in their own Lenten journeys.

ONTARIO SCIENCE CENTRE EXCURSIONS
Science was the name of the game for our Grade 1 to 4 students, as March was a busy month for hands-
on workshops at the Ontario Science Centre, grounded in the Ontario Science Curricula, as students,
parent volunteers and teachers experienced a series of fun, interactive and informative science
workshops in French, such as, Energy in Our Lives, The Properties of Liquids and Solids, Forces and
Movement and Pulley systems, in which students explored how these simple machines can help us in our
daily lives by manipulating direction, force and speed. Thank you to Monsieur Etienne and the many
parent volunteers for their assistance.

Guidance Corner - April 2019
During this season of Lent, I encourage you to help your children to live out their faith by finding ways
to serve others. It is in recognizing the needs of others that we build empathy and strong relationships
with those around us.

http://www.mamaplusone.com/being-the-hands-and-feet-seven-ways-kids-can-serve-others/
Primary and Junior students have access to an electronic portfolio
on http://www.myblueprint.ca called All About Me, and can record and reflect on aspects of self-
awareness, goal-setting, experiential learning and classroom learning. Introducing students early in their
school career to the process of developing a personal portfolio helps them reflect on their strengths and
interests as learners as they prepare for transitions from grade to grade. Intermediate students also
have accounts on My Blueprint and can complete their Individual Pathways Plans.
Creating Pathways to Success: An Education and Career/Life Planning Program for Ontario
Schools, Policy and Program Requirements, Kindergarten to Grade 12, 2013 describes a
comprehensive education and career/life planning program for Kindergarten to Grade 12 designed to help
students achieve their personal goals and become competent, successful, and contributing members of
society. The foundation of this policy seeks to have schools and school boards provide opportunities for
students to explore 4 foundation questions:
Who Am I?
What Are My Opportunities?
Who Do I Want to Become?
What Is My Plan for Achieving My Goals?
This policy also seeks to ensure that students develop the knowledge and skills they need to make
informed education and career/life choices through the effective application of a four-step
inquiry process; provide opportunities for this learning both in and outside the classroom; and engage
parents and the broader community in the development, implementation, and evaluation of the program,
to support students in their learning. I have included a link to the MOE policy document for your
interest:

Monthly Update from the Board
April 2019
Budget Consultation
All parents, staff, students and stakeholders are encouraged to participate in the consultation regarding the 2019-2020
budget. By identifying your priorities for consideration, the Trustees of the Board will be better able to make decisions
that reflect the concerns and interests of TCDSB stakeholders. The budget website will be available as of Wednesday,
April 3rd. This website will include both video and printed materials outlining the budget, and the budget process, as well
as a breakdown of the various ways that everyone can participate in the consultation process. An online survey will also
be available through to May 3rd to ensure that everyone has an opportunity to share their views.

Sign Up for School Messenger
One of our greatest priorities is ensuring that all our students arrive safely to school each and every day. To enhance our
existing absence-checking procedure TCDSB has introduced a new, more efficient student absence reporting system
called SafeArrival. This new system will reduce the time it takes to verify student attendance, making it easy for you to
report your child’s absence and easy for staff to respond to unreported student absences. With SafeArrival, you are asked
to report your child’s absence in advance using any of these 3 convenient methods:
1. Using your mobile device, download and install the SchoolMessenger app from the Apple App Store or the
Google Play Store (or from the links at https://go.schoolmessenger.com). The first time you use the app, select
Sign Up to create your account. Select Attendance then Report an Absence.
2. Use the SafeArrival website, https://go.schoolmessenger.com. The first time you use the website, select Sign Up
to create your account. Select Attendance then Report an Absence.
3. Call the toll-free number 1 (833) 251-3286 to report an absence using the automated phone system.
These options are available 24 hours/day, 7 days a week. Future absences can be reported at any time up to a maximum
of 10 consecutive days. It is important to note that when setting up your account, you must register using the email
address and phone number associated with your child’s Trillium account. In addition, schools will use the
SchoolMessenger Communicate automated notification system to contact parents whose child is absent when the
absence was not reported in advance. The automated notification system will attempt to contact parents at multiple contact
points until a reason is submitted for the absence. If our system is unable to reach the designated contacts, office staff will
follow up.

max) to explain a big idea in one of these fields: Physics, Mathematics, Life Sciences. Your film can take any
form you like: animation, talking head, documentary, dramatic reconstruction, whatever. It’s worth keeping in
