Why We Need to Go to Sunday Mass – Every Sunday!

Why do we have to go to Sunday Mass every Sunday?

God himself has given us the divine precept in the Third Commandment to keep holy the Lord’s Day. As Christians, the Lord’s day is the day that commemorates the Resurrection, Christ’s victory over sin, death and the devil – Sunday.

Private Worship is not enough! Yes, we can pray to God anywhere and anytime, but we cannot receive His Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity, crucified and resurrected, in the Eucharist anywhere and anytime. The Eucharist is the source and summit of our lives as Christians and is properly celebrated in Mass.

The Need for Community. God made us social beings and it is in the community of the faithful that our faith is confirmed, acknowledged, strengthened and comes alive.

The Mass has the power to transform your life. If we offer ourselves: our needs, strengths and weaknesses, prayers and penances, suffrages, good times and bad times, challenges and achievements, then we will find that placing them on the altar our lives will be transformed by God’s grace.

The Mass Brings the Word of God to Life. Literally, the Eucharist is the Word of God made flesh before our very eyes. It is not only the proclamation, preaching and profession of the Word of God, but it is the opportunity to once again see the Word made flesh just the way the shepherds and magi did that first Christmas.

Only in the Sacraments do we have the guarantee of God’s presence and that we are actually receiving the effects symbolized in the ritual. The word sacramentum means: “holy mind” and was used by the ancient Romans to signify a “guarantee”. In Roman law, that which is a sacramentum is guaranteed because one could not go against that which was holy since it was sworn between them and God. The Sacraments, therefore, are the guarantee of God’s grace and, furthermore, guarantee that what they signify by liturgical signs they actually effect. For instance, a “Stop” sign that actually could make your car stop would be a sacramentum because it can actually affect what it signifies.

Lastly, the Mass re-presents and unites us with the event of our salvation. The Mass re-presents the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ that we may have a real experience and relationship with the salvific events of the Paschal Mystery. "The Eucharist, when celebrated at Mass, transcends time and brings us back to Calvary and the hollowed tomb, that we may have a real experience of the event of our salvation and then go forth and announce it to the world. (Philip-Michael Tangorra, Holiness and Living the Sacramental Life, (Steubenville: Emmaus Road Publishing, 2017) 103)"

So, that I know that you read this, next time you see me, which ought to be next Sunday’s Mass, give me a high-five instead of shaking my hand before or after Mass. Thought I would bury this in my article to see who is actually reading the bulletin and paying attention. Yet, the most important reason why we need to go to Mass is because God gave us free will so that we could either love him or reject him. And, if we don’t go to the Mass which he gave us so that we could receive his love and be united with his saving event for us, then what does that say to him? “Nah, don’t really want your love.” Guess where you will spend eternity? Have fun, I hear its 24-7-365 Macy Gray music.
