Johanna Covert & Toni DiJorio

CO-PRESIDENTS OF OUR LADY’S GUILD

I'm sure all who knew Joan Dimon are as sad as I am about the passing of our dear sister. Her cheerful nature and generous spirit brought joy to everyone who knew her. She has left us with wonderful memories of kindness and friendship and fun, that will make us smile and help us forget just how much we miss her. Let's remember Joan in our prayers and fond memories.

September General Membership Meeting Highlights

Susan Junker and Cynthia Bach of the St. Vincent de Paul Dream Center and Lyn Frimer, Guild

Program Chair, admire the generous donations from our members for the Dream Prize Box.

Our Lady's Guild has a lot to be thankful for. We are a group of faithful Catholic women who support and encourage each other, while fundraising for various charities in our community. Johanna and I would like to thank several of our members who have really stepped up to make a difference. Thank You Sandy McCullough for taking over as our Spiritual Advisor – the position previously held by our dear Sister Patt. You have our ears and our hearts. Thank You Sharon Forbes for bringing your personality, creativity and energy to what is sure to be a great Holiday Bazaar. We are all looking forward to a wonderful event. Thank You Lyn Frimer for arranging a very informative program about St. Vincent dePaul given by the Director of Development Susan Junker and Cynthia Bach, Director of the Dream Center. Thank you Guild members - always generous, for filling their Prize Box with goodies for the children who visit the Dream Center. Thank You Tyra Moore for spearheading and leading a very successful first meeting of the “Evening Edition” - a Guild meeting held the same day as our general meeting but from 7 to 8:30pm in the Parish Center. The “Evening Edition” makes it possible for Parish women who cannot meet in the morning to come together later in the day. Thank You Nancy and Kathy Cisar for once again hosting our Fall Welcome Coffee on Saturday, Oct. 17 at 10am. This event is open to all Parish women and is a wonderful opportunity to meet and make new friends while introducing them to all Our Lady's Guild has to offer. See you all at the next general meeting to be held on Tuesday, Oct. 20 when Susan Miller, a faith based motivational speaker and author will talk about personal relationships and how to manage stress. Her program is loaded with laughs, audience interaction and improvisation because Susan believes we learn BEST when we're laughing and involved. May God Bless You, Toni

SAN CARLOS PARISH CHRISTMAS PROJECT

Beginning the weekend before Thanksgiving, Our Lady’s Guild will once again be facilitating the San Carlos Christmas Project. Christmas gifts will be collected for young Catholic students at the St. Charles Apache Mission School.

Since 2002, we have shared our blessings with the less fortunate at a small Catholic elementary school (grades K-6

th) on the

San Carlos Indian Reservation. These young children have been affected by the dysfunction and violence associated with drugs, gangs, abuse, neglect and alcoholism. There is no private employment on the reservation and approximately 85% of the parishioners live below the federal poverty level. Operating the “only” Catholic school on the Apache Indian Reservation, they are significantly dependent on AZ tax credits, grant funding and private donations. They do not receive any casino profits.

Our courtyard trees will feature the familiar “Red Bags” for St. Charles. Red bags will ask for fleece jackets, socks and a toy or book. For some students this may be their only Christmas gift. Additionally, there will be tree tags for reading motivator gifts such as balls, card games, puzzles, coloring books, board games, hot wheels, Legos, jewelry, beading, etc., that will be used as prizes for their Accelerated Reading Program. There will also be tags for teacher classroom supplies.

The San Carlos Project starts the weekend before Thanksgiving with the distribution of the red bags.

November 21-22 – week one – distribute red bags.

November 28-29 – week two – hopefully all red bags have been distributed and collections can begin. Focus on gift tags.

December 5-6 – week three – continue collections.

December 12-13 – last minute donations.

Tuesday, December 15 – beginning at noon, sorting in the Teen Center.

Wednesday, December 16 – continue sorting, loading of vehicles.

Thursday, December 17—gather at OLOJ for blessing, continue on to San Carlos.

We need help in the Church courtyard assisting parishioners with their gift selections, sorting and transporting.

To volunteer, contact Guild members:

Jody Svitak - [email protected] - or text or call 970-333-8578

Marian Kuzma – [email protected] - or text or call 480-431-2929

It will be held at Harold’s in Cave Creek on Thursday, October 22 at 9:00 am. Breakfast will be available to order from Harold’s menu, or feel free to bring a goodie (no obligation).

Book Nook – CALLING all readers, not just those

who have Kindles, tablets, or IPads, but those of us

who still enjoy the feel of picking up an actual book

and turning the pages!! If you have any gently used

paperback or hardcover books of all reading genres,

for all ages (no textbooks please), that are collecting

dust on your shelves please consider donating them

to the Book Nook for the Holiday Bazaar.

Beginning Monday, Oct. 5th you may drop off your

book donations at the Teen Center at OLJ. Then

visit the Book Nook at the Bazaar and have some

fun selecting a whole bag of new books you haven’t

read before!! How awesome is that?! Thank you for

your generous donations to the Book Nook.

Questions, call Sue Brimmer 623-547-6300.

Corner Café – In previous years you have been generous in your donations to the Corner Café. These donations really help to offset our expenses, and earn more money in support of our local charities. This year we are in need of donations of bottled water (16.9oz case), and cases of coke, diet coke, or sprite. As you will soon be delivering your book donations to the Teen Center for the Book Nook, perhaps you could help with our beverage request. We appreciate any and all donations! Lyn and Geri

Vendors – Requests are continuing to come in from vendors wishing to be a part of our 2015 Holiday Bazaar. The most recent requests are now being placed on a waiting list as we are filling the last of our spaces. We have an excellent mix of hand crafted and manufactured items. Vendors will receive their space placement in early October along with the bazaar flyer. Most of our vendors help to advertise our event on social media and by posting flyers. Please continue to build support for the bazaar among your friends. The 2015 Holiday Bazaar promotional flyer was emailed to you on September 8th. SHARE SHARE SHARE! If you need another copy, please contact Sharon Forbes, [email protected]. The vendors are anxious to share their wares with us and we would like to have a fabulous turnout. Thank you, Lena and Mindy
