Following Christ to the Cross:

People in John’s Gospel

This is the Year of John at St. Michael. In Advent and Christmas, we reveled in John 1:1–18 with the theme The Word Became Flesh. During the Epiphany Season, we found great delight in Christ’s seven miracles in John’s Gospel. Now, as Lent begins, we take up John’s Gospel with the theme, Following Christ to the Cross: People in John’s Gospel. The plan is to look at ruthless villains like Caiaphas, Judas, Barabbas, and Pontius Pilate. Also on the docket are some of the most notorious sinners we will ever meet—the Samaritan woman (who had been married five times), Peter (who denied Jesus three times), and Mary Magdalene (who once was possessed by seven demons). Along the way, we will encounter the most amazing person of them all—Jesus. The Sunday morning adult Bible class is studying John’s last writing—Revelation. While John writes this book from the Island of Patmos and directs it to seven churches in Asia Minor, its message is for us—to inspire our hope and ignite our faith. It’s still not too late to be a part of this engaging and transforming study! You will be glad you did. Bring friends!

Connect with God’s Word

The Book of Revelation The Book of Revelation is the culmination of the entire story of salvation. It is the end point of all that is written in both the Old and New Testaments. While the four gospels narrate the life of Jesus, Revelation pictures his ascension and exaltation at the Father’s right hand and what this means for the church. Where the gospels end, Revelation picks up. Throughout the book God’s people sing and celebrate in the midst of horrific circumstances. Join us on Sunday mornings at 9:30a in the gym as Pastor Lessing presents this study on the Book of Revelation.

BREAD, BELONG, AND BIBLE STUDY

Everyone is invited to gather together in Luther Hall following the Saturday 5:00p worship service to enjoy:

BREAD a light dinner together BELONG a time of fellowship with others BIBLE STUDY studying God's Word together

Plan to join us every second and fourth Saturday and discover God’s vision for you as uncovered in the Me I Want to Be by John Ortberg. We conclude by 7:15p and childcare is provided. Questions? Contact Christine Harrison at [email protected] or Janet Olson at [email protected].

Young Moms' Bible Study The Young Moms' Bible Study meets every first and third Tuesday of the month through May 16 from 9:15a-10:45a in Luther Hall. If you are looking for a place to connect with other mothers, please join us. Childcare is provided. Contact Laura Moll for more information at (785) 304-4092.

2017 Scripture Memory Challenge A new verse is listed in the bulletin each week. You can also find them listed at www.stmfw.org. Do you have a difficult time memorizing Scripture verses? Memverse.com is a GREAT tool that can help you!

A faithful teacher of God’s Word and Luther’s closest friend, JUSTUS JONAS greatly assisted churches in times of transition during the Reformation. He shared Luther’s fiery personality and possessed strong translation, organization, logical-thinking, and preaching and teaching skills. His dedication to the Reformation never wavered—even when he was forced to become a wandering preacher near the end of his life.

All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking,

correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may

be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

Pastor Lessing’s Ministry Plan

Ongoing Priorities Present sermons, Bible studies, and seminars that are insightful, biblical, and practical.

Be involved in our three schools. Teach in our preschool, our Getz Road ESM classes, and our seventh grade classes at the Union St. ESM campus. Regularly attend meetings at Concordia Lutheran High School and lead chapel there once a year.

Coordinate and help plan our church’s ministries.

Get to know people. To date, 215 first time visits have been made to members in their homes.

Promote the foundational text in our Strategic Plan—Romans 12:1–2, “By the mercies of God...be transformed.” Transformed and changed lives for Jesus is my single, passionate, and most compelling priority in all things.

Ministry Plan for the Next Year Serve on the call committee for a pastor who will lead our Millennial Ministry.

Help our Church Council realign its governance structure so that we simplify what is often too complex.

Invest time and effort in our Acts 1:8 Mission Team by leading them and our church staff through the book Hinges: Opening Your Church’s Doors to the Community

Plan and promote our trip to Israel in October 2018.

Secure a part time volunteer coordinator.

Take the lead on celebrating the 500th Anniversary of the Reformation at St. Michael. This includes: Paying off our mortgage on October 29, followed by a German Fest, complete with brats, sauerkraut and

a German polka band! Our Lenten challenge of completing 178 service projects before Easter. Proudly wearing a new St. Michael 500 Reformation t-shirt that goes on sale on March 1. Teaching in our Vacation Bible School that will feature Luther’s famous hymn, A Mighty Fortress is our

God. Helping promote an Adult Bible Class on Luther in September. Encouraging members and friends to attend a viewing of the new Luther movie on October 26. It’s called

Martin Luther: The Idea that Changed the World. Educating the J.O.Y. (Just Older Youth) group about Luther’s devotional life (January); Luther on Baptism

(April); Luther on Biblical Interpretation (July); and Luther for Today (October).

Long Range Strategies Reignite our foreign mission trips.

Prepare the church to purchase additional property to the south—if and when it becomes available.

Encourage a building program that will add meeting rooms, restrooms, expand our nursery and preschool, create more effective interior signage and complete the narthex.

Thank you so very much for the privilege of serving as your pastor. We have exciting work to do!

Hymn of the Month Holden Evening Prayer is the hymn we will learn and sing in all of our mid-week

services. The beautiful words point us to the light of forgiveness and life that pierces the darkness of lent.

As the darkness of the evening Draws us toward the end of day, May the cloak of sin and sadness Never block us from your way. Like the stars up in the heavens May your hope and joy shine through, In the light of your forgiveness Give us strength and peace anew.

During Sunday worship, we will learn the hymn How Deep the Father’s Love composed by Stuart Townsend.

Praise Song of the Month This month’s contemporary song is Lead Me to the Cross composed by Brooke Fraser. The chorus of this song proclaims the forgiveness and love we receive as Christ pays the price for our sin at the cross.

Lead me to the cross where your love poured out. Bring me to my knees, Lord, I lay me down. Rid me of myself—I belong to you. Oh lead me, lead me to the cross.

You can listen to recordings of both of these songs at www.stmfw.org/hymns-songs/.

From the President

February was a month of lessons for me. Some of the lessons reinforced what I already knew; some of the lessons changed what I thought I already knew; and some of the lessons taught me something completely new. We have been learning a lot here at St. Michael as well. We have learned that just living in our community does not make us a citizen. We have to actively engage with our neighbors and have done so with efforts like our garage sale last summer, our work with Shepherd of the City Lutheran Church, and our new Bridge Ministry. We will also be impacting those around us through the efforts of those who participate in the Lenten Challenge of 178 Service Projects. If you have not looked at the postings in the narthex, I encourage you to do so. There truly is something for everyone. We have also learned (but I am sure we already knew) that our timing is not God’s timing relative to the process of calling our missional pastor. To that I would only respond, “be not dismayed.” God has a great plan for us that he will reveal at the right time. Our Call Committee, under the outstanding leadership of Shayne Ulmer, continues to discern God’s will and the right candidate will be made known to all. If you see a committee member, please thank them for their time and effort. Clearly these are just my thoughts, I think the Bible says it much better than I can in Romans 8:28: “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” I pray that each of you find the Lenten season to be one of reflection and renewal. God bless you!

Connect People to Jesus

CLIP IN—Risking Hospitality in your Church

By Jim Ozier & Fiona Hayworth

How intentional are the members of our congregation in providing hospitality? We are not just speaking to our teams of greeters and ushers, who do a marvelous job, but to each one reading this.

The bicycle is our reference! Intentionality is the frame of the bicycle. It is the structure that supports everything else. A culture of hospitality happens when every person, every weekend, is intentional about making connections: connecting to someone they do not already know; connecting one person they meet to yet another person; connecting people to God through their intentionality, behavior and life. In short, when people make themselves available in this way, they can become the bridge over which someone walks to experience the light of Jesus Christ for the first time. Look closely at the 5 – 10 LINK RULE. 5 REFERS TO TIME: Fellowship and visiting with friends is so important in church. Five minutes before church starts and five minutes after it ends, meet someone you do not know! 10 REFERS TO SPACE: When someone you do not know comes within ten feet of you, reach out to them, and invite them into your group of friends. LINK REFERS TO CONNECTING: When you meet someone new, immediately link them to someone else based on some common affinity (occupation, home state, interests etc.). This is a big step and a big commitment on the part of the church! It is a covenant we make with each other. Pastors, staff, lay leaders, and members must reinforce each other. People often think of hospitality before a service starts but some of the most effective hospitality takes place after the service ends. We are “Connecting People to Jesus.”

The Bridge is for young people who are looking for a place to ask questions about faith. It is for those who are looking to find other believers with which to connect. Help The Bridge serve those in need on Sunday, March 12, at 11:00a in Luther Hall. In March we are gathering donations to put together care packages for local homeless individuals and families. Come to help pack on March 12 and/or bring a donation. Recommended items: socks/underwear, water bottles, crackers, hand wipes, toothbrush/paste, maxi pads, gift cards for fast food. Bring your items to the donation containers in the narthex. Our Next Bridge Gathering is on Sunday, March 19, at 11:00a in Luther Hall! Our theme for the gathering is Happy. There are so many lies we are told in this world about what will make us happy. Come and explore with us how we can ignore the bad advice that traps us and embrace what God has to say about happiness. We would love for you to join us for music, a meal, and a video Bible study on March 19.

“Freely you have received,

freely give.” —Matthew 10:8b

In Ephesians 4, Paul talks about pastors and other leaders as gifts that God has given

the church “to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ.” Stephen Ministry has provided a method to equip those gifted for caring, so they can build up the body of Christ by providing Christian care and support to those experiencing a difficult time. If you would like more information on our Stephen Ministry, call Margaret Jones at 672-3594.
