Dividing God’s LandBy Ludwig SchneiderIsrael Today

In Joel 3:1–2, God states that He will bring back the people of Judah and Jerusalem and then enter into judgment withthe nations who have scatteredHis people and divided His land.

God calls the Jews My peopleand Israel My land. Nations thatcome against the Jewish peopleand the Land of Israel are thuscoming against God’s own pos-session: “The Lord your God haschosen you to be a people for Hisown possession out of all thepeoples who are on the face ofthe earth” (Deuteronomy 7:6).God has even sworn to give Israelto the Jewish people—“the landwhich He promised on oath toAbraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob”(Genesis 50:24). Israel–Light To The NationsIsrael–Light To The NationsBy David Parsons, www.JPost.com

“Indeed He says, ‘It is too small a thing that you should be My servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob, and to restore the preserved ones of Israel;I will also give you as a light to the gentiles, that you should be My salvation to the ends ofthe earth.’” (Isaiah 49:6)

Jesus did not arrive out of nowhere, but cameaccording to the promises that God had madeto the “fathers”—Abraham, Moses, David, andother Hebrew patriarchs. He was the “light ofthe world” (John 8:12), but He arose out of thelight of Messianic hope and expectancy alreadygiven to Israel. To better understand this biblicalprinciple, consider that light is oftenused as a metaphor for truth inScripture. It reveals eternal realities, illuminating the way things really are, since our spiritual understanding can often be veiled.

“Oh, send out Your light and Your truth!Let them lead me...” (Psalms 43:3)This aspect of light as a revealingagency of eternal truths is especiallyso regarding the true nature andcharacter of God, which brings us toIsrael’s central role in being a “light to the nations.”

The nation of Israel has gifted the world with many spiritual blessings, the foremost being our Messiah. Itwas also through Israel that God choseto reveal His nature and character tothe world.

In His covenants with Israel, Godreveals His personality. We see Hisgrace and faithfulness, His holinessand justice. This is summed up in onepowerful passage in Exodus where Goddescribes His own attributes to Moseson Mount Sinai (Exodus 34:5–7).

Through the revelation at Sinai, weunderstand that He is the awesomeand all-powerful Creator, and yet Hedoes not want to stay out there ineternity forever. Rather, He loves creation and wants to interact withhumankind, even to “dwell” with us(Exodus 29:43–46; Revelation 21:3).

The Sinai revelation gave rise to ethical monotheism—belief in the onetrue God and Creator of all, Who isultimately good and holy and engagedwith the world, and to Whom we willall give answer some day, therebyencouraging us to live uprightly.

Humankind’s highest wisdom in ancienttimes gave us the Greek pantheon ofselfish gods. But Israel insisted theCreator is not like that; He is merciful, holy, slow to anger, and ever open tothe repentant soul.

[ ISRAEL—LIGHT TO THE NATIONSCoverStory p.2

This was a precious light shining forthinto darkness. And the Israelites weremade custodians of this light for allpeoples.

We see this in the visible symbols oflight which God placed in the WildernessTabernacle, and later at the Temple—the menorah and the holy fire that fell upon the altar. The light of God’s glory and presence was also seen in the pillarof fire that accompanied Israel in thedesert, and was reflected in the glorythat shone upon the face of Moses.

Israel has carried this magnificent lightfor generations, and indeed the ApostlePaul lists “the glory” as one of the greatredemptive gifts to the world which“belong” to Israel (Romans 9:4). Thus,Christians should be forever gratefulfor this divine light which has come tous through Israel.

Having just visited Greece, Turkey, and Israel,I can attest to the difference between theGod of Abraham and the gods of the Greekpantheon. The yearning in mankind for aFather in Heaven is innate; it is the “God-sized hole” in the heart. The Greek poetsreached to invent that Father but fell shortwith their all-too-human little gods with various frailties. Not so with the God of Abra-ham. Paul introduced the Greeks to Abba, El Shaddai, and Ha’Rishon v’HaAcharon (theFirst and the Last) and changed the worldforever. —Myles

DIVIDING GOD’S LAND continued from cover

Therefore, the struggle over the divisionof the Land is not simply a political con-flict between the State of Israel and thePalestinians. In reality, the nations, underpressure from the Palestinians, are chal-lenging God to a duel. God will enter intosevere judgment with the nations whohave divided His land and will condemnthem in the Valley of Jehoshaphat—meaning the Valley of Decision (Joel 3:2).

One might question whether Joel’sprophecy applies to our time. Joel lived in the post-exilic period around 400 BC,or some 100 years after the return of theIsraelites from the Babylonian exile. So,one could deduce that he was referring to the Babylonians. Yet neither the Babylon-ians nor the Assyrians ever divided the land.

Joel does not accuse just one nation—as would be the case with Babylon—but rather all the nations who have scattered Israel as a people and divided the Land of Israel. Therefore, it is clear that he is referring tothe time after the dispersion of the Jewsthroughout the nations following the de-struction of the Second Temple in 70 AD.

The Roman leader Pompey had alreadydivided the land between 63–55 BC andallocated it to the Idumeans, the Itureans, the Samaritans, and the Ptolomeans, leaving only the small area of Judea forthe Jews. After the fall of the RomanEmpire, the Byzantines occupied Israel, followed by the Persians, then theMuslims, the Crusaders, and finally theOttomans, who were defeated by theBritish in 1917.

The 1917 Balfour Declaration, which wasincorporated into the British Mandate bywhich pre-state Israel was governed from1920 to 1948, states: “His Majesty’s

Government views with favour the estab-lishment in Palestine of a national homefor the Jewish people.” The Mandategranted to the Jews the entire areabetween the Mediterranean Sea and theJordan River, and from Mt. Hermon in thenorth to Eilat in the south. This was for-mally recognized in 1922 by 52 states inthe League of Nations; it was revised bythe UN, founded in 1945, in the PartitionPlan of 1947.

The Partition Plan divided the area thatwas initially assigned by the League ofNations solely as a Jewish state into twostates, one Jewish and one Arab, withJerusalem as an international zone to be

administered by the UN. The Jews acceptedthe division of their Promised

Land. The Arabs flatly

rejected it.

The fact that the United Nations

was asked to decide for or against aPalestinian statereflects the events prophesied by Joel, that one day all

the nations will be judged by God withregard to their position on His land andHis people.

Blessed is he who decides in favor of Godand His land.

Civilizations rise and fall based on their decisions regarding the AbrahamicCovenant (Genesis 12:3). The U.S. hasnever been this alienated from Israel inword and deed. Believers in Americamust stand for and speak out for ourMiddle East ally in the face of worldwidepressure and at the risk of losing popu-larity. Now is the time and we are thepeople. —Myles

Dividing God’s Land brings God’sJudgment

A VOICE OF REASON

Waiting for MartinBy Myles Weiss

Where’s the Muslim Martin?Where is the voice of reform that will transform this religion of overone billion people?

We need a voice similar to MartinLuther, who challenged the forces ofcorrupt Christianity. In his day, hedared to call for the end of sellingindulgences, that vile practice thatenslaved poor families who purchasedtheir hopes of eternity with their meager finances. The church of Luther’sera sold empty promises. Lutherdemanded change. He spoke out for a more spiritual future for those whofollowed Christ. He called on leaders toadmit their failures and change theirways. Regarding the Jewish people, he“flew well, but landed poorly.” Whenthe Jews did not convert following hisrevelations, Luther became an anti-Semite. However, his contribution tothe family of faith must be acknowl-edged. He led the way for each of usto have a direct relationship withMessiah and not remain dependenton a priestly class.

Where is the voice in Islam today towithstand the stranglehold that themullahs and imams have on the heartsand minds of everyday Muslims?

We need a voice like Martin LutherKing Jr., who challenged the forces ofsegregation and spoke up for the civilrights of black people in America. Heused non-violent protest to drawattention to shameful bigotry. Hisvoice changed our country.

Where is the so-called moderateMuslim majority? Why do we not hearfrom them daily, standing against theradical Koran-carrying leaders whofoment war around the world? Appar-ently they are as afraid as Westernleaders, unwilling to make a publicdeclaration of the issues—as Dr. Kingdid in America.

Where is a voice like Dr. King’s intoday’s Islam?

Perhaps we need a voice like MartinShort. Yes, Islam needs to lighten up andlaugh! This Martin’s self-deprecating,comedic styling may be instructionalfor the Muslim world. Islam has a des-perate need for a sense of humor. It is a tragic fact that the world is acceptingIslam’s declaration that any expressionof humor regarding Islam is “hate-speech”! The ability to laugh at oneselfis seemingly absent from the mentalityof mainstream Islam. If it is present,we need to hear it.

We are waiting for the “religion of peace”to demonstrate a self-correcting move-ment toward moderation. We are waitingfor the masses of Islam to demand corrections to jihadist theology. We arewaiting for the civil rights enjoyed byMuslims in America and Israel to begranted by Muslims to women, Jews,Christians, Buddhists, Hindus, etc. inMuslim lands.

We are waiting for a kind, humanity-enhancing humor that reaches acrossdifferences and celebrates the universalhuman condition by “lightening up”and laughing a little.

Where is the Muslim voice of humor, life, laughter, and love?

We are waiting … for Martin.

STILL STRUGGLING WITH THE LAW

Q.

A.

Ask The ChaplainBy Dr. Todd D. Baker ZLM Staff Theologian

Jesus said He did not come to de-stroy the law but to

fulfill it. And He did keep kosher becauseHe was Jewish. We know He never atepork or other non-kosher food ever. Howdo we reconcile this?

Jesus also made sacrifices in the Temple on Passover (Mark14:12; Luke 2:41–42). Must we

do that, too? Of course not, because Hisonce-for-all-sacrifice on the Cross put anend to those sacrifices that were requiredunder the Law (Hebrews 9–10).

We can’t pick and choose doing partsof the Law we like or what is conven-ient; if you are going to be justified bythe Law, you have to obey all of it. ButChristians are not justified by the Law;we are justified by the blood of Jesus.Either He fulfilled all the law in Hislife or He didn’t.

Paul said Messiah Jesus is the fulfill-ment of the Law for Believers (Romans10:4). He completed the Law by Hislife and ministry. Jesus explains howHe fulfilled the Law and the Prophetsin Luke 24:27: “And beginning at Mosesand all the Prophets He explained tothem in all the Scriptures concerningHimself.” In other words, He showedhow He was the answer to prophecy,His life and ministry the fulfillment ofthe Law and the Prophets.

Nowhere in the New Testament arewe required to place ourselves underthe ordinances of the Law—like eatingKosher, offering animal sacrifices, etc.—since Christ Jesus has fulfilledall those requirements for us. OUR MAN IN HAIFA www.tents-of-mercy.org

Surf Israel!By Eitan Shishkoff

You can’t call Israel’s Haifa coast asurfers paradise. But you can catchsome decent waves when oceanstorms stir up the normally calmEastern Mediterranean waters. I’veseen plucky lads (rarely any females)in their thermal wetsuits in mid-win-ter, grabbing every swell imaginable. With today’s short, pointy-noseboards, the better riders are able tomilk many twists and turns out ofeach brief ride.

One summer, as a 12-year-oldSouthern California boy, I fell in lovewith surfing. The board I learned onwas 9.5 feet, fully twice my height. Tocarry it, I folded a towel 14 times(well, OK, 4 times) to keep my headfrom being disfigured by the weightof the monstrous piece of fiberglass-covered polyurethane foam.

Although 50+ years have passed sincethat summer, my fascination with thesport has not faded. Thus, when I metTodd McWerthy, a young man passion-ate about Jesus and about surfing—we hit it off. Todd was drawn to Israela few years ago and gained a love forthe land, the people, and the surfers. Now he’s made a film that weaves allof these together.

Todd envisions opening the Israelisurf scene to the rest of the world, thus revealing an adventure-loving,peaceful nation rather than the war-mongering oppressors we’re por-trayed as by many of the internationalmedia. Watching Todd’s film, which premiered in Israel in November, myheart was touched by the sense ofcommunity and friendship Toddachieved in a relatively short time ofgetting to know the surfers and surf-board makers here.

Messianic-Jewish lore includes thesurfing background of Dr. David

Stern, translatorof the Jewish NewTestament andauthor of numerousgroundbreakingworks, includingthe Jewish New

Testament Commentary. Long beforefinding Yeshua or gaining respect as apre-eminent biblical scholar/spokesmanfor our movement, Dr. Stern co-authoredthe 1963 classic Surfing Guide To South-ern California. It’s even got awesomephotos of Lunada Bay, where I grew up.Long a resident of Jerusalem, Stern (76)actively surfed until very recently.

Messianic Rabbi Barney Kasdan of SanDiego, California, does his fellow JewishBelievers proud by appearing in Todd’sfilm, catching a wave near Tel Aviv. Hisexplanation of the Messianic signifi-cance of the Passover Seder providesviewers with a tasteful introduction toYeshua as the Jewish Messiah.

As you can tell, I still love surfing andI’m enthused about this documentary. For more information, contact Todd [email protected]. He’s pouredhimself into this project and is a truefriend of Israel.

CLASSIC ZOLA: 2002—10 years ago

Our “Good Friends”the SaudisBy Zola Levitt

Just when you think the U.S. is waking upto the truth about Israel’s rights, some-body muddies the waters of effectiveMiddle East strategy.

In the midst of continued terroristatrocities by Palestinian murderersagainst Israeli citizens comes theknee-jerk reaction of the U.S. to throwits support behind Saudi Arabia’s“innovative” plan to broker peace inthe Middle East. This plan, offered byCrown Prince Abdullah, seeks toreduce the size of Israel, increase theterritory of the Palestinians, and allwithout bothering to deal with thecontinued murder of Israelis.

The United States returns to its mantraof “peace, peace, peace.” When it comesto the oil-rich Arab states, we continueto bow down in the throne rooms ofSaudi Arabian despots in exchange foran uninterrupted flow of oil at reason-able prices. We call them “allies” and“friends,” but do we really know theSaudis? Wasn’t Osama bin Ladenraised in Saudi Arabia?

Recently, a court in Saudi Arabia concluded a case involving rape. Thevictim received 65lashes and sixmonths in jail. That’s right. Thevictim was pun-ished. The attacker, her brother-in-law,received 4,750 lashes plus sixyears in prison—not for rape, but for having relationswith his sister-in law.

Why do I bring up this heinous injustice? Becausefor all the years

Washington has called Saudi Arabia our ally, we’ve been telling you that it is our worst enemy. Think of it. After September 11, 2001, President Bush was quick to reiterate our position of “cooperation” and “friendship”with the Saudis, but the fact is that we have nothing in common with thisbackward, feudalistic dictatorship. They are not democratic. They openlyviolate the most basic of human rights, disallow any religious expression exceptIslam, and foster a culture of hate which,in fact, gave us 15 of the 19 terroristswho attacked us on September 11.

We came to their defense against Iraq, putting our lives on the line for theircitizens (and oil), but they visit NewYork with a bit of cash and tell us, “Howtragic, but it is your fault.” They’ll signtheir names to the list of coalition part-ners, but don’t expect them to offer any real support against al-Qaeda. “BinLaden is one of ours,” they tell us, “andeven though he’s been bad, most of ourpeople adore him. What can we do?Besides, America is getting too chummywith Israel and we give millions toArafat’s fight against the Zionists.”

Don’t expect much help from our“friends.” But don’t ruffle their featherstoo much; we wouldn’t want gas pricesto go up.

SHALOM FROM SANDRA

We finished with Amazing Grace inHebrew. I tell you, there was not a dryeye anywhere.

We each left a piece of our heart as weplanted trees with our own hands andprayed over the Land of Israel. Thencame Qumran and the Dead Sea Scrolls, and Gideon Springs, where faith istested.

Finally, Jerusalem and the overlook atMt. Scopus at sunset—our first glimpseof the Holy City/the City of Gold/God’sEternal City. As we toured the JewishQuarter, the Western Wall, Mt. Zion,Yad Vashem, and finished at the GardenTomb, all of our senses were touched. It will not be our last time in Israel.

I got to spend time with Myles andKatharine Weiss as we toured. Godmade sure I got to know these wonder-ful people. Zola had a time with thisministry, Jeff and I had a time, and nowMyles and Katharine have their time. Iam convinced that these are the rightpeople at the right time. They possessgreat knowledge and compassion. Icannot wait to see where God is leadingthis ministry.

God bless you,

Sandra

Back To TheHoly Land Israel is the same! Galileehas not moved, Jerusalem is still there, and I love the people and the land asmuch as ever. I thought 2008’s tourwould be my last time in Israel. Godhad other plans. Wow, what plans Hehad for me!

Fall Tour 2011 started in Athens, Greece.Or as one of my friends said, “I was onthe riot and rocket tour.” Yes, we sawsome of the Greek riots. If you lived inthe suburbs and the ruckus was down-town, would you know it? You would, but you’d be far from it. Same as inGreece. The Parthenon was closedbecause of the strikes, so we regroupedand went to Mars Hill and walkedaround the Parthenon. They are withina block of each other. The pilgrims gota taste of what it must have been likefor Paul when he spoke of an “unknownGod” on Mars Hill. On Patmos, ourpilgrims sensed what John must havefelt and seen as he wrote his Revelation;and again on Ephesus, where Paulpreached against the idols. Real sightsand real insights.

I have always thought of Greece as agreat prelude to Israel. Sort of a warm-up for the big game. We arrived in TelAviv, spent the night on the Mediterra-nean coast, and headed to Galilee. Westopped along the way to see CaesareaMaritima, Mt. Carmel, and Megiddo;continued through Nazareth andCana, and ended with the view of theSea of Galilee. And that was just thefirst day!

Best memories of the tour: Galilee—the area of our Lord, Yeshua; and thepilgrims praising and worshiping on afirst-century fishing boat on the Seaof Galilee. We all felt the Holy Spiritthat morning as we sang and prayed. As usual, I started crying as the StarSpangled Banner played and thenHaTikvah, Israel’s national anthem.

TOUR REPORT

Israel Awaits YouBy Tracie, Zola Tours Manager

I just returned from leading my 7thtrip to Israel. This trip, I’ve told many, was my most spiritual—and that’sreally saying something.

The bulk of the credit goes to our newtour pastors, Myles and KatharineWeiss. You may have already experi-enced their gentle teaching on ourtelevision program, Zola Levitt Presents.Certainly, Myles and Katharine arequalified to lead our tours. Aside fromhaving led many other Holy Land pilgrimages, they both attended Biblecollege. They also pastor a Messianiccongregation and speak regularly tolarge audiences. If your pastor wouldlike to invite them to speak at yourchurch, write to [email protected] call (214)696-8844.

Shepherding others through the HolyLand requires more than knowledgeof the Bible and biblical sites. It requiresa humble spirit, an ear pressed closeto God’s heart, a passion for His Land, and a heart for fellowship. Myles andKatharine have shown me a counte-nance and spirit that are too rare forteachers in the spotlight: they pourout their time and energy to benefit

the pilgrims and glorify God. They’reonly too happy to answer questions, provide prayer, and deliver devotionsat tour sites. Consequently, our pilgrimsconnect the dots as never before be-tween their Bible and Israel.

The number 7 represents completion,as in Gen. 2:2,3. I believe that the Lordused my seventh and the Weisses’ firstZola Tour to complete the past and in-augurate this new phase for our tours, television program, and newsletters. Iam delighted to partner with the Weissesand promote their teaching and leader-ship. Guess what, friend? We have maderoom for you on the spring tour by add-ing a second bus. It would be a privilegefor me to talk with you about our March,June, or October 2012 tours.

At the tours’ farewell dinners, pilgrimsrelate that they didn’t expect to bondso quickly or so deeply with one another.Such friendships blossom quicklybecause each group consists of peoplewith the same heart and spirit. They allseek to walk in the footsteps of Jesus, and know Him more deeply and inti-mately. It is a joy and privilege to haveMyles and Katharine leading thateffort! If you think you’d like to join usin 2012, I’d love to talk with you. Pleasecontact me at (214) 696-9760 or viaemail at [email protected]. I hope tohear from you soon.

ISRAEL’S CONTRIBUTIONS IN SCIENCE

World Ports Safer With Tracking TechnologyAs a Toyota sedan approaches a busy air-port, an Israeli-developed vehicle identityrecognition (VIR) system instantly givessecurity personnel a summary of the car’smake and model, the country or state thatissued the license plate and the holder ofthe plate.

Much more than simply tracking usersat this sensitive security point, the VIRis also a first alert. What if the car isrecognized as a Corolla but the plateis registered to a Ford Focus owner?Either the license plate was switchedor the car is stolen—a clear red flag.

VIR is the newest product of Hi-TechSolutions (HTS) Israel, which has specialized in optical character recog-nition (OCR) solutions since 1992.Forty countries use HTS products tofight terrorism and crime, as well asmanage cargo, traffic and toll roads—including all ships leaving the ports of the United States.

The privately held Rishon LeZion-basedcompany owns its technology. It doesall development at a customer serviceand R&D center in the northern Israelitown of Migdal HaEmek.

Each of Ports America’s 42 seaports in the U.S. is equipped with HTS tech-nology to speed merchandise fromship to shore and keep tabs on it atthe same time. At these ports and 15European and Asian ports as well, thesoftware identifies every container inreal time during loading and unload-ing, and cross-checks information onthe source and destination of thecontainer.

HTS recently com-pleted a successfulcargo-scanning pilotprogram at a majorairport in Europe, and its system hasbeen digitally scanning cars enteringBen-Gurion International Airport nearTel Aviv for several years, alertingsecurity personnel if any driver is listedas a suspicious person. Similar systemsare installed at other airports and atentrances to office and residentialcomplexes.

Border crossings are another hot spotwhere HTS technology is increasinglydeployed around the world. HTS vice-president Meta Rotenberg says borderpatrols are primarily concerned aboutsmuggling of drugs, weapons, andeven people. The company’s softwarecounts and monitors every vehiclecoming in and out.

Recently, the company began to inte-grate its recognition software on handheld devices used by municipalinspectors and police officers aroundthe world for maintaining order incities, roads, and parking areas. Thatcan extend to catching speeders, mon-itoring municipal traffic loads, andtracking down stolen vehicles.

They say, “You’re never alone in Israel”—a tongue-in-cheek reference to the hightech security measures used to protectthe country. Our recent trip into Beth-lehem illustrated this sentiment clearly:The birthplace of Yeshua has been socommandeered by Muslims that theborder crossing is difficult for everyone. The Israelis are forced to monitor, check, and re-check vehicles for terroristsupplies. The situation causes a hasslefor the honest Arab inhabitants, and apotentially deadly assignment for theuniformed and armed Israelis.—Myles

them virtually entombed in a head-to-toe shroud. What wounding, to seewhat their ideology does to them inthe name of “modesty” and “virtue.”Many are prisoners of a perverse de-mand for “holiness” that is mandatedand enforced by men.

So the question arises: Where are theusually vocal members of the Westernfeminist movement? Why the silence?

Islam’s treatment of women should bea front-page issue for feminists. In itsmost virulent forms, the practices ofKoran-following Muslims produceabusive systems of power differentialsbetween the sexes. In some cases, suchas in Saudi Arabia, it takes the form ofineligibility to obtain a driver’s license. In more primitive societies, Islamrequires genital mutilation to preventpleasure in God-ordained intimacy.

Barbaric?Absolutely, and yet the same peoplewho insist on the right to any form ofsexual expression are seemingly absentwhen these issues of Islamic oppressionare raised. The Steinems and Greersand even the currently omnipresentOprah never say a word against Islam. We must speak out—for the women of Islam and against the ideology thatenslaves them.

I love this woman—smart, funny, gorgeous, and spiritual. —Myles

Selective SisterhoodBy Katharine Weiss

After twenty-five years of marriage, Ican honestly agree with the old rumor“Jews make the best husbands.” Atleast my Jew—Myles—has been awonderful friend, father, and followerof Yeshua. Every Shabbat (Sabbath), hepraises me as a Proverbs 31 woman (evenif I don’t always feel like one), and re-minds all who are present when I lightthe candles that the Light of the Worldcame through the womb of woman.

He honors me and requires our chil-dren to do the same. Myles is generousand likes to lavish me with gifts eventhough he hates to shop. In fact, he isthe opposite of the stereotypical por-trait of the “cheap” Jew. I feel loved.

I have good news for you women:Whether you are married or not, ifyou are a Believer, you have the great-est Jewish husband in this world! Healways believes the best in you andhas written you the most beautifullove letter ever. He is watching overyou at all times and delights in yourunique expression of His love to thisworld. He is the most generous Kingand provides you with His gifts andblessings. I hope you feel loved.

Sadly, this is not the case for the womenof Islam. What a painful picture, to see

ARCHAEOLOGY

Tiny Token of Christian Faith from 6thCentury Jerusalem By Matti Friedman, Associated Press

A tiny, exquisitely made box found on an excavated street in Jerusalem is a token of Christian faith from 1,400 years ago, says Yana Tchekhanovets of the Israel Antiquities Authority, one of the directors of the dig where the box was found.

When the lid is removed, the remains of two portraits are still visible in paint and gold leaf. The figures, a man and a woman, are probably Christian saints, possi-bly Jesus and His mother.

The box was found in an excavation outside the walls of Jerusalem’s Old City inthe remains of a Byzantine-era thoroughfare. Uncovered two years ago, it wastreated by preservation experts and extensively researched before it wasunveiled at a recent archaeological conference.

The box is important in part because it offers the first archaeological evidencethat the use of icons in the Byzantine period was not limited to church cere-monies, she said. Part of a similar box was found three decades ago in Jordan, but this is the only well-preserved example to be found so far. Similar icons are still carried today by some Christian Believers, especially from the EasternOrthodox churches.

The relic was found in the City of David excavation. The politically sensitive digis located in what is today the Palestinian neighborhood of Silwan, just outsidethe Old City walls in East Jerusalem, the section of the Holy City captured byIsrael in the 1967 Six-Day War and now claimed by Palestinians as their capital.

To sum it all up: the relic, precious to Christians, is most likely from the 6thcentury—before Islam existed. The neighborhood, King David’s, has been partof the Jewish capital for 3,000 years. The land WON by Israel in 1967, is NOWclaimed as the capital forwhat Muslims hope willbe the 57th Muslim state. That Jerusalem is nevermentioned in the Koranand prayers are directedtoward Mecca must beminor points. One won-ders what other treasuresand illuminating findswill be unearthed inother “politically sensi-tive” digs. —Myles

Thirty-Five MillionAmericans HarborAnti-SemitismBy Corky Siemaszko, NYDailyNews.com

Millions of Americans harbor an uglysecret—they’re suspicious of the Jews.

A nationwide survey released recentlyby the Anti-Defamation League foundthat 15% of the country holds deeplyanti-Semitic views—and that numberappears to be growing.

“It is disturbing that with all of thestrides we have made in becoming amore tolerant society, anti-Semiticbeliefs continue to hold a vise-grip ona small but not insubstantial segmentof the American public,” the ADL’sAbraham Foxman said.

Old stereotypes about Jews beingpushy and controlling the economyare festering—especially among theleast-educated Americans, the surveyfound.

Among other things:

• 19% answered “probably true” to thestatement “Jews have too much con-trol/influence on Wall Street,” a fivepercentage point increase since 2009.

• 14% agreed with the statement that“Jews have too much power in the U.S.today,” an increase from 13% in 2009.

• 15% agreed Jews are “more willing touse shady practices.”

• 16% agreed that Jewish “businesspeople are so shrewd, others don’thave a chance.”

• Other anti-Jewish canards continueto be believed by millions ofAmericans.

• Some 31% believe the Jews wereresponsible for crucifying Christ.

• And 30%—a percentage that hasstayed steady since 1964—insist Jewsare “more loyal to Israel than toAmerica.”

• Nearly half of all respondents agreedwith the statement that Jews “sticktogether more than other Americans.”And a quarter of the country says Jews“still talk too much about what hap-pened to them in the Holocaust.”

The survey found that the most-edu-cated Americans were the least preju-diced and foreign-born Hispanicswere more likely to hate Jews thanU.S. born Hispanics.

• Some 29% of the African-Americanssurveyed expressed strong anti-Semiticviews.

• On the plus side, even the anti-Sem-ites gave Jews credit for their strongfaith in God (79%), being big on family(84%), and for contributing to Americanculture (64%).

An adage says, “Just because you’reparanoid doesn’t mean they’re not outto get you.” Just below the surface ofany “civilized” culture, anti-Semitismis ready to explode into its nextexpression against the Jews. Germanywas considered the apex of moderncivilization in the early 20th century.Blame-shifting and scapegoating areas old as the Garden of Eden, andcould happen anywhere, even inAmerica. —Myles

CALLING GOOD EVIL & EVIL GOOD

Promoting Hatred For IsraelBy Manfred Gerstenfeld, YNetNews.com

This past fall, it became known thatthe German EVZ Foundation hadfinanced two high school student pro-grams that promoted hatred of Israel. This state foundation was created tocompensate Holocaust slave workersand fight contemporary anti-Semitism.In one of the programs, Dutch-Jewishanti-Israel extremist Hayo Meyer cameto the Anne Frank High School inGutersloh. He equated Palestinian suffering with the mass murder of Jewsin the Holocaust and termed Israel a“criminal state.”

Since then, in the Nesbru High Schoolin Asker, Norway, an exhibition spon-sored by Norwegian Church Aid, washeld on “Palestine.” It included a pictureof an Israeli flag crossed out and“Murder” written in reverse underneathit. After protest by an Israeli studentand some bad publicity, the schoolfinally decided to remove the exhibition. It is crucially important to know muchmore about hatred spread againstIsrael and Jews in schools in the Westernworld. This contributes to the forma-tion of a new generation of Israel hatersand anti-Semites.

Very few studies give information onthese topics. In the 1990s, MitchellBard studied the most widely usedhistory textbooks in American highschools. Regarding Israel, he foundthem “full of factual errors, oversim-plification, omission, and distortion.”Bard concluded that American “highschools are, as far as anti-Israeliteaching is concerned, even worsethan universities.”

In 2008, another analysis by GaryTobin and Dennis Ybarra confirmedthis. They also found that Arab andMuslim interest groups try to white-wash and glorify all things Islamic andthus promote Islam. In this way, awhole series of lies has permeatedAmerican textbooks.

We should not be surprised, butsoberly consider how much interven-tion is needed to awaken society andrevive the Church, especially concerningIsrael. Replacement Theology reachesits peak in Arab maps where Israel hasbeen literally “wiped off the map” andin textbooks that contain “history”that never happened. The Good Newsis that a Jewish King is returning to aJewish Jerusalem to reign over a wor-shipping world made up of Jews andgentiles—distinctly different, yet witha shared destiny. Only God can workthis one out! —Myles

“BAD FAITH” NEGOTIATOR

“Moderate” AbbasReveals True ColorsBy Dan Calic, www.YNetNews.com

The assumption has been that if aPalestinian state is approved, it wouldbe based on pre-’67 borders, whichmany believe are indefensible. [Ed.Note: Israel captured the West Bank, the Gaza Strip, the Sinai Peninsula,East Jerusalem, and the Golan Heightswhen it won the Six-Day War in 1967.]Yet the application presented to theUN by Palestinian Authority PresidentMahmoud Abbas is not based on pre-’67borders. It is based on the original 1947partition plan of UN Resolution 181.

First, aside from the irony of requestingthe identical item from the identicalbody that his Arab brethren rejected in1947, Abbas’s application negates whatvirtually all proponents of the “two-statesolution” have supported, (includingthe Saudi proposal in 2002): a returnto pre-’67 borders.

Second, the area of land designated forIsrael under the ’47 partition is 5,500sq. miles—30% smaller than the 8,000sq. miles the ’67 borders encompass.

Third, it would mean that several hundred-thousand Jews now livinginside the pre-’67 borders would endup outside Israel and inside a hostilePalestinian state. This is in addition tothe roughly 300,000 Jews who havebeen living in Judea and Samaria whoalso will be required to move, asAbbas is already on record saying,“there will be no room for a single Jewto live in Palestine.”

Thus, potentially over 500,000 Jewswould be forced to relocate, eventhough Israel has a 20% Arab popula-tion that is not being asked to move.

Fourth, Jerusalem would no longer beinside Israel. It would be cut off, wellinside and completely surrounded bythe Palestinian state.

By requesting the ’47 partition lines,Abbas is essentially asking for a sec-ond chance to accept a UN resolutionhis Arab brethren rejected 64 yearsago. This alone is precedent-setting. It also demonstrates that he has nointerest in peaceful coexistence with a Jewish State of Israel within secureand defensible borders. Rather, hisgoal appears to be to grab as muchland as he can, while remaining com-mitted to “the complete liberation ofPalestine, and eradication of Zionisteconomic, political, military, and cul-tural existence.” (Article 12 of hisFatah Party’s Charter)

The Middle East already has 22 Arabcountries, with a combined popula-tion of more than 300 million. Israel’ssix million Jews represent 2% of thatfigure, yet in order get “justice,” theArabs require a 23rd state and the Jews are being asked to slice up theiralready tiny state. Moreover, if Abbashas his way, Israel will be 30% smallerthan the already indefensible pre-’67borders, and its capital will be in themiddle of his hostile state.

Dan Calic recently made aliyah (moved toIsrael), and is a citizen of Israel. For manyyears, he has written insightful articles forinternational publications. Here, he stripsaway the naiveté that plagues Western viewsof the Middle East conflict. The frustrating one-sided solutions, where Israel gives and theArabs take, are potentially deadly. —Myles

HebrewLessonHealing and Praise By John J. Parsons

It is good to praise and trust the LORD despite our afflictions, and indeed, sufferingitself presents an invitation to come before God in prayer (James 5:13). Suffering offersus a nisayon, a test, for our hearts to be exercised in ways otherwise rendered impossibleshould the path of our lives be attended without real struggle.

In this connection I am reminded of a quote from Sadhu Sundar Singh, “Should painand suffering, sorrow, and grief, rise up like clouds and overshadow for a time the Sunof Righteousness and hide Him from your view, do not be dismayed, for in the end this cloud of woe will descend in showers of blessing on your head, and the Sun of Righteousness rise upon you to set no more for ever.”

It’s been said that both the devil and God want your soul, but their approaches are diametrically opposite to one another... God offers you a bitter cup that, after it has beenduly tasted, will be turned sweet, whereas the devil offers you an artificially sweetenedcup that, after it has been duly tasted, will be found bitter to the last of its dregs... Whenyou accept your suffering as ordained by God—by the LORD of Glory who could easilydeliver you from all trace of its presence in but the twinkling of an eye—your heartacheis sanctified, and your praise becomes more dear to Him. Only the wise and loving LORDknows how bitter waters may be made sweet; only the great Refiner of our souls knowshow to bring beauty up from ashes... So heal me, O LORD (even if that means sufferingand pain for my life), and I shall be healed; save me, O LORD (do whatever it takes tobring me to the end of myself), and I shall be saved—for You are my praise.

If you are afflicted, troubled, or in any kind of pain, you have a great opportunity to glorifyyour Father in Heaven by offering Him your praise.... Praising God is the appropriateresponse to all of reality; the affirmation of God’s glory transforms everything. “Is anyoneamong you feeling bad? Let him pray. Is anyone feeling good? Let him sing praise”(James 5:13). Remember that regardless of how you presently feel, your emotional life is centered in the Presence of God... As George Mueller once affirmed, “Be assured—if you walk with Him and look to Him, and expect help from Him, He will never fail you.”

Zola’s Highlights:A Video Collection of Classic Zola Four 30-minute TV programs on one DVD

These programs celebrate the timeless teachings of the late Zola Levitt, one of the most beloved Bible teachers in America. Highlights from thirty years of television broadcasting are condensed into four half-hour programsthat examine Zola’s early, mid-career, and later teaching.Trademark, on-location footage from Israel gives viewersinsights into the Biblical world and Word.

1. ISRAEL, MY PROMISED Zola taught the Scriptures from a decidedly Jewish perspective. In one of his first series, Messiah, Zola taught about Jesus’ Jewishbeginnings; in Armageddon, he talked about The End. This program contains theseand more.

2. ISRAEL BY DIVINE RIGHT Drawing on Zola’s mid-career teachings, we see himinvestigate and extol the Gospel’s expansion beyond Jews—to non-Jews. Thoughmany knew Jesus as the Savior, Zola wanted the world to know Him as the JewishSavior. This program offers samplings of this emphasis, and also delves into theDead Sea Scrolls, introduces Islam, and considers prophecy.

3. JERUSALEM FOREVER Zola’s contagious love for Israel—which mimics theScripture’s—is apparent in his music, books, and TV productions. This program visitsZola in mid-career when he teaches about the Bible’s Jewish roots, emphasizing histrademark topic: prophecy.

4. FRIENDS OF THE RABBI Viewer interest in how the Old Testament holy daysconnect to New Testament events made The Holy Days of Our Lord one of Zola’s morepopular series. Zola examined that connection by focusing on those who claimed tofollow Jesus: early Believers, Crusaders, and others. The program concludes with aninterview with author Tim LaHaye.

Arab Christians Fear “Arab Spring”In Baghdad, the head of Lebanon’s MaroniteChurch (an offshoot of the Roman CatholicChurch) expressed deep concern about the

“Arab Spring.”“I support the spring when it is a spring, not

Messiah Coming Soon

Jews familiar with an ancient exegesis called YalkutShimoni say that current tension between Iran and SaudiArabia matches a prophecy regarding the year in whichthe Messiah—the King who redeems Israel and theworld—is to appear.

In particular, the recent Iranian plot to assassi-nate Saudi Arabia's ambassador to the U.S., andArab nations pressuring the West to attack Iran, appear to fit the sequence of events predicted inthe Yalkut Shimoni. For a more detailed reportvisit: http://wp.me/pieUD-14W

Saluting FromThe AfterlifeZola made some television programs thatyou’re never going to see. In March 2006,he was within a month of meeting hisMaker: Metastasized lung cancer hadscheduled his graduation to Heaven forApril 19. But he insisted that our TV production crew shoot some last-minuteteaching. “I’m a soldier,” he declared ashe waged his final campaign.

Ken Berg has been ZLM’s producersince day one. He leveled with me,explaining that the programs, despiteZola’s best intentions, weren’t up tosnuff because Zola looked too ill. Zolahad already taught all that he had toconvey during prior efforts. And I’mdelighted to announce that this min-istry is going to give his best teachinga grand finale encore.

Why just now? First ofall, Zola’s programs wereshot in standard ratherthan high definition (orHD), which we’ve usedsince 2006. The window of opportu-nity is closing before all of our TVnetworks and stations will requirepredominantly HD. Second, a bufferof Zola’s most perennial classics willnicely segue Jeff’s teaching to Mylesand Katharine’s. Third, we’ll buysome time to develop the footage ofMyles and Katharine in Israel intotop-quality programs.

The new television programs withMyles and Katharine are spirituallystupendous. Many viewers will agreethat, with their clear teaching, touch-ing dramas, and ethereal music, theyrival and surpass most of what we’veproduced. Not that Jeff’s teachingfalls short. Not that we’ll ever forgetour founder (we’ll always have ClassicZola outtakes). But the timing is rightto call on Zola for a “hits on parade”last hurrah. What a delight for himand you!

You probably have gathered that I’m apretty good administrator but, at best,a mediocre theologian. Just as a prizefighter needs an assertive coach, aBible teacher who speaks to nationaltelevision audiences relies on an effec-tive administrator. Months ago, ZLMadvertised for “The Rocky Balboa (risingchamp) of Bible Teachers.” Myles fulfillsthat role; I identify with silver-screen-Rocky’s coach, MickeyGoldmill, the characterplayed by Burgess Meredith.(Sometimes my soul feelsas old as that reveredactor looked.)

Before our television broadcasts switchover completely to our newest HD con-tenders, however, we’re going to call onthe soldier who groomed me to carry onhis life’s work. Zola’s going to be backon the frontlines (your TV screens) fora couple of memorable months, so youmay want to set your recording devicesand invite your friends to watch.

From P.S. (PA): ZLM continues to teach the deeper things of God, like “The Seven Feasts ofIsrael,” unlocking the meaning of the Feasts to a gentile Believer like me. I loved the picturein the Oct ’11 Levitt Letter (p. 25) of the old olive tree that had a young one grafted on topof it. God bless this ministry!

From L.S. (OK): I like that ZLM teaches me about the history of my faith as a whole andnot just “church” history.

From R.B. (OH): I used to watch Zola back in the 1980s. I recently watched the new guyon the Internet. I think he’s good too. You bring us gentiles a correct perspective that wedo not find in our churches, and you make quality programs, which I appreciate. Thank youfor your ministry. I am glad that you are continuing forward.

From B.C. (CO): I wish I had a gazillion dollars so I could order everything I want all atonce and support your ministry with a bigger offering! Oh well, a little at a time. Love/willmiss Jeff, look forward to future programs. May God continue to bless your ministry!

From T.F. (AZ): I started watching Zola 30 years ago. He changed my life and opened myeyes and soul! I will always be grateful. I miss my teacher and guide. It took me a longtime to come back … but I am!

From M.P. (IL): I saw your TV program this past weekend and learned a lot about a Biblepassage that I didn’t fully understand until hearing the explanation from a Jewish perspective.

From A.Z. (MI): Love your programs. Would love them more if you used David Stern’sComplete Jewish Bible! It says it perfectly in a Hebrew (Heavenly) way!

From K.C. (KS): We are ordering two Israeli flags this time as our other flag was stolen offthe house. Apparently we offended someone. Praise the Lord!

From M.L. (TN): Here’s mygift for the To The Jew FirstMinistry. I am heartbrokenand at times disgraced to seeanti-Semites among the recent“Occupiers” around America. I know they are always there, but I disliked seeing them grabthe spotlight. Keep bringingthe Good News of Yeshua tothe Jewish people—somethingworth speaking up about—and a message full of love andhope. Thank you to Todd andother TJF missionaries.

Enjoyable Insights

Dear ZLM,I enjoy the Levitt Letter, especially the articles by Myles and

the Hebrew Lesson with John Parsons’s insight and challenges inthe Word. May the Lord keep blessing ZLM in all your endeavors.

S.M.S. (NC)

Shalom S.M.S.—Thanks for the kind words about my articles, and I want to say “Amen!” to

your assessment of John Parsons’s Hebrew Lessons. I grew up in a ConservativeJewish home, attending Hebrew school 3 days per week until my Bar Mitzvah.Even with that background, I consistently learn from John’s lessons, and treasurehis teachings and Bible exposition. Becoming Familiar

Dear Myles and K.,You will find a little extra in my monthly giving to make up for those

who jumped ship either because of Zola’s passing or Jeff’s leaving. It is humannature to cling to the familiar. You and K. are not “familiar” yet. Remember, ittook Jeff a while to reach his “familiar” after Zola’s torch was handed to him.

W.S. (MA)

Dear W.S.—Thank you for the extra gift this month. I especially appreciate the

wisdom that you sent with it. You noted that your giving was not based on Zola,Jeff, or Myles and Katharine but an offering to the Lord for His work throughZLM. Blessings —Myles

Not Funny!

More comments on cartoons in the Levitt Letter, particularly “In God’s Sofa” on page33 of the November issue and “Jesus Clears the Temple” on page 6 of September’s:

From R.B. (TX): not quite blasphemous, but inappropriate.

From J.W.D. (MS): I was offended … expect to find this in a worldly magazinenot in a Christian publication.

From J.B. (GA): trivializes Almighty God! Spreading the Gospel of Jesus isserious business.

From B.P.T. (NC): November issue has 11 cartoons on 31 pages of articles.Frivolous … and detracts from your serious mission and message.

From A.G. (TX): I feel offended at the comics you put in the Levitt Letter … Idon’t think Yeshua would like the jokes … lighthearted ones like “Jesus Clearsthe Temple” seem OK.

Dear R.B., J.W.D., J.B., B.P.T., and A.G.—I hope you don’t mind if I answer these letters as a group, in the interest

of space. Several of your letters were lengthy, which makes it difficult for us toreprint them in their entirety. However, they deserve consideration. The cartoonsin our Levitt Letter have stirred quite a bit of controversy. Some appreciated them, some thought they were inappropriate, and some called them blasphemous. What seems clear from the wide range of reactions is how subjective these thingscan be. I don’t want to minimize our responsibility to be appropriate, but Ihonestly believe that the cartoons merely “spice” up the magazine, and are notour raison d’etre (reason for being).

As a new Believer, I received a pearl of wisdom from Moishe Rosen(founder of Jews for Jesus). He said, “Myles, if it’s not the Bible, read it with apencil!” In other words, Scripture is sacred, but minor things (especially man’sideas in print) are just that: minor. They are negotiable, can be crossed out, erased, and debated because they are “subjective.”

The Levitt Letter addresses many issues of extreme importance. We usethe Bible as our standard of faith and practice. Beyond that, like Jewish peoplefrom time immemorial, we employ humor to lighten the burden of life.

Some will “get it,” some won’t. Some jokes hit the target, some miss. Please don’t let cartoons deflect from the thrust of our purposes: the Gospel tothe Jew first, the centrality of Israel in God’s plan, and His desire that noneshould perish. Blessings —Myles

Use Only MY Bible—No, Only MINE!

Dear ZLM,I would like to see the KJV used as the Scripture source in the Levitt

Letter. Many people hold to a “KJV only” view, and I am one. How can a Believertrust a “Bible” that is copyrighted for money? Jesus and his martyrs gave theirlives so men would have the Word of God freely given, not copyrighted. I entreatyou to consider this request and I pray that God will move you.

—J.T. (VA)

Dear J.T.—There is not one monolithic manuscript that is free from copyist or

scribal errors—including the family of manuscripts that comprise the TextusReceptus that constitutes the KJV. But the miracle of preservation is such thatout of all the 24,000 manuscripts we have (dating from the first century B.C. totenth century A.D.), and with over 240,000 variant readings or so between them, not one difference changes or denies any major doctrine of the Judeo-Christianfaith. When compared, these manuscripts agree with each other over 98%of the time, and the less than 2% variance concerns minor issues of grammar, inclusion, or omission—which, again, do not impact any major orthodox doc-trine of the faith. God’s miraculous preservation of His Word over the longcenturies from original composition to multiple copies is truly amazing!

You might be surprised to learn that modern translations are based ontexts older than the KJV (the benefit of further archaeology). Most moderntranslations—New Revised Standard, New International Version, New AmericanStandard, and even New Living Translation—have incorporated this newscholarship. The New King James did update the OT but still used the TextusReceptus for the NT.

Also, the KJV was and is copyrighted! It remains under copyright in theUnited Kingdom, but is not enforceable elsewhere. —Theology staff

Answers in a Nutshell from Todd

C. (NJ) asks: Does Ezekiel (40–44) teach that there will be animalsacrifices for the nations during the thousand-year reign of Christ?A. Yes; Ezekiel interpreted literally says there will be animal sacrifices offeredduring the Millennial Kingdom. But they will be no more efficacious to perma-nently take away sin than they were during the Old Testament times. Nosacrifice before or after Messiah Jesus saves. These sacrifices are memorialin nature, pointing back to the Cross of Christ. For just as the Lord’s Supper isa memorial looking back to the Cross, so too do the sacrifices by Israel in theMillennial Kingdom point back to the Cross.

D.F. asks: When did the early Church start building “buildings” to gather in toworship the Lord as a congregation? A. The earliest so far discovered is the UpperRoom where Jesus celebrated His last Passover on Earth and where James andthe Apostles met with the early Church. Archaeologists excavated in the lastdecade and found the Messianic seal on the mezuzah at the entrance and onanointing receptacles inside the structure. The seal fuses together the Menorah,Star of David, and Christian fish symbol. So by the late first century, Believerswere already worshipping in building structures. Please see the book about thisamazing archaeological find, The Messianic Seal of the Jerusalem Church byRaymond Fischer and Reuven Schmalz (at bookstores and Amazon.com).

L.A. asks: Is Islam an offshoot of Old Testament Judaism? Is Mohammed inthe Koran reacting to a heretical branch of the Eastern Church in his day thatwas common in Arabia known as Monophysitism? Did he ever meet OrthodoxChristians? A. Islam is not a deviant form of Judaism: note that manyKoranic utterances call for the destruction of the Jew, whereas biblical Judaismpromises that God’s love, preservation, and protection of the Jewish people areguaranteed forever. True, both religions forbid eating pork, but this is a superficialsimilarity. Mohammed did have contact with the Coptic, Syrian, and ArabicChristians—and called for their destruction as infidels. He did adopt DoceticGnosticism when writing in the Koran that Jesus did not really die on theCross but only appeared to, as a phantom.

P.A.R. asks: Zola once stated on TV that the Dome of the Rock has an engravingon the top that says, “God had no son.” I have mentioned this to several people, and they do not know what I am talking about. I do not believe that Zola wouldmake this up. A. Yes, you heard Zola correctly. Written in Arabic around the cir-cular border of the Dome, it states that Allah has no son, nor has he begottenor is begotten. I confirmed this with the late Zvi Rivai, award-winning Israelguide and chief tour guide for Zola Tours for about twenty years. It shows atonce the anti-Christ spirit behind the religion of Islam!

S.M.S. asks: Is this transliteration from Hebrew to English correct? Zechariah12:10 in English: “They will look on me, the one they have pierced, and theywill mourn for him as one mourns for an only child, and grieve bitterly for himas one grieves for a firstborn son.” The key word here is “pierced.” The Englishtranslation is “the One they have pierced.” However, in Hebrew, it translates“those who were pierced.” It’s plural, not singular. It is mourning the deathsthat were in Jerusalem at the time of the destruction of the First Temple.A. The Hebrew text of Zechariah 12:10 is third-person masculine singular. Theancient rabbis and the Jewish writers of the New Testament understood it to bea Messianic prophecy referring to the suffering Messiah—fulfilled in the deathof Jesus when He was pierced in crucifixion (John 19:37).

S.M.S. asks also: I would like your interpretation of Jeremiah 16:16 and whetherit refers to an end-times Holocaust. A. The historical context of Jeremiah 16 isthe Babylonian invasion of Israel in 586 B.C., not the end-time eschatologicaljudgment and Israel “converting” to Christianity. Verse 16 refers to the soldiersof Babylon making a meticulous house-to-house search of Jews living in Judahand Jerusalem to either kill them or carry them away captive to Babylon. Thefirst rule of Bible interpretation is context.

S.E. asks: Matthew 5:32 says, “But I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, makes her the victim of adultery, and anyone whomarries a divorced woman commits adultery.” What about physical or emo-tional abuse? These are not grounds for divorce? A man beats his wife daily andshe can’t divorce? A. The Word of God in 1 Corinthians 7:15 allows for divorcein case of abandonment. That would most certainly include abuse where thespouse’s safety is threatened. Logic, common sense, and the attributes of God’smercy and justice are such that He would not expect anyone to stay marriedunder these heinous circumstances.

Constantine’s “Christianity”

Dear Todd,On page 27 of the Nov. Levitt Letter, Myles said, “Constantine officially

broke with the Hebrew roots of the faith in 333 A.D.” What did he do? —D.W.

Dear D.W.—In 333 A.D., Constantine went after the Jewish elements still left in the

Christian faith. With his new paganized form of Christianity—that laterevolved into full-fledged RomanCatholicism—hemade it illegal for“Christians” to cel-ebrate the Passoverand observe theSabbath, stating ineffect that Judaismwas incompatiblewith Christianity. —Todd

Why Iran MightWelcome BombingBy Amir Taheri, www.NYPost.com

Israel’s quarrel is with Iran’s Khomeinistregime. A Shiite version of pan-Islamism,Khomeinism harbors global ambitions. For Khomeinists, Iran is not a nationwith its own national interests but partof an Islamic ummah (world) that is at war with the United States and itsallies. And the Khomeinists are tryingto seize control of the Israel-Palestineissue in the hope of seducing the Arabsinto accepting their hegemony.

This isn’t a new strategy. Egypt underNasser used it, as did Libya underKaddafi, Iraq under Saddam Husseinand Syria under Hafez al-Assad. Justas those Arab despots armed terroristgroups against Israel, the Khomeinistregime is using Hamas, Islamic Jihad, and Hezbollah to target the Jewish state.

Yet the Khomeinists appear to welcomea bombing campaign from Israel and/or the United States. Such an attackthat is not part of a broader strategyto topple the Khomeinists would onlystrengthen their regime.

That’s what happened in Egypt in 1967,when Nasser was defeated but allowedto remain in power. And in 1986, afterLibya was bombed by the U.S. butKaddafi was allowed to live to bragabout his “great victory.” Similarly, in

1991 Saddam Hussein was defeatedbut allowed to remain in power.

In 2006, in military terms, Israel defeat-ed the Lebanese Hezbollah. Hezbollahlost a quarter of its full-time fightersand all its bases close to the frontier,as well as 80 percent of its arsenal. Yet,because its leadership was left intactin Beirut, it could claim “the greatestvictory in modern Islamic history.”

Another reason that Khomeinists maywelcome bombings that only woundthem: They face a difficult electionnext spring, with the threat of anotherinsurrection against their corrupt andbloody rule. A bombing raid wouldgive them an excuse to crush theopposition in the name of nationalunity and claim fresh legitimacy.

The Khomeinist regime is a mortalenemy of the Iranian people, of Israel, and of the West. Those who are thinkingof a bombing raid should rememberMachiavelli’s advice: “Do not wound amortal enemy and let him live. Eitherturn him into a friend or kill him.”

The U.S. used this strategy in WW II: Destroy, humiliate, and then rebuild. Consequently,Germany and Japan became allies of the UnitedStates. Modern battles seem to have lost thatedge, and the new rules of engagement requirehalf measures that put our own troops at risk.Israel’s experiences in Lebanon and Gaza areprime examples of this warfare without follow-through. Let’s pray for wisdom on the part ofIsraeli and American leaders. —Myles

$36.4 million and save 250 lives a yearfrom cardiovascular disease alone.

However, the plan has its opponentswho argue that only 1 percent of thecountry’s water supply is for drinking, thus the mineral need not be added toall supplies, and that there are otherways to give the population additionalmagnesium such as pills or supple-menting food. They also argue thatwater costs would rise. But the min-istry counters that Israel has one of thehighest desalination rates and that thepopulation needs supplementation.

Meanwhile, if the decision does gothrough, the civil and environmentalengineering department at the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology in Haifahas developed a better and cheapermethod for adding magnesium todesalinated water, making it fit fordrinking and agricultural uses. Underthe Technion technique, seawater isthe source for magnesium, which isexchanged with calcium using a processcalled cation exchange.

Israel’s Health Ministry wants magnesiumto be added to potable water because theincreasing desalination of the water supplyhas removed much of the mineral.

If the Water Authority and otherauthorities agree, Israel will becomethe first country in the world to addmagnesium to its water.

Of the 1,400 million cubic meters ofwater that are consumed every year,300 million are already desalinatedfrom the sea due to the dearth of rain-fall, the ministry said. This figure couldrise to 750 million in 2020. Desalina-tion, which eliminates the salt, alsoremoves the magnesium, which isvital for normal function of cells.

Recommended human consumptionof magnesium, according to the WorldHealth Organization, is 30 milligramsper liter, or 400 milligrams per day.But most Israelis get no more than 200to 300 milligrams, which is consideredvery low. Water supplies about a fifthof magnesium to the body; a deficitcan cause health problems, such asischemic heart disease, high bloodpressure, and cancers such as ovari-an, breast, rectal, and stomach. Thus, the lack of magnesium consumption, the ministry said, is “worrisome.”

Perspiration causes the loss of addi-tional magnesium, as does chronicstress, which increases the amount ofadrenaline in the body, which causesthe mineral to be eliminated throughthe urine.

The ministry said that a professional, interdisciplinary committee wasappointed to look into the matter thatincluded representatives of the WaterAuthority, the ministry’s public health, nutrition, and environmental protec-tion branches, and the Israel Unionfor Environmental Defense. Theywrote that increasing the amount ofmagnesium in the water would cost

62 Years LateBy Aviel Schneider, Israel Today

On May 11th, 1949, one year after itsestablishment, the State of Israel wasaccepted into the United Nations.Today, the Palestinians are seekingrecognition as the 194th memberstate of the UN. But they are 62 yearslate. Had the Palestinians agreed tothe UN Partition Plan, Resolution 181,of November 29th, 1947, like Israeldid, they would have become the59th member state following Israel at 58.

Abba Eban, Israeli statesman and quote-worthy diplomat, said, “The Palestinians never miss an opportunity to miss an opportunity.” Instead of accepting statehood andthe massive land grant of the day, fiveArab armies attacked Israel on May15, 1948. In doing so, they set thetone for the following decades. Nowit is clear that only Sar Shalom (thePrince of Peace) can settle the duststirred up so long ago. —Myles

Arabs Clamor to Join Mossad, IDFBy Shlomo Mordechai & Ryan Jones (r) Israel Today

Thanks to the “Arab Spring,” a growingnumber of Egyptians, Syrians, Jordani-ans, Iraqis, and others are realizing thatIsrael is much better than their owntotalitarian societies. Therefore, thou-sands of Arabs from Mideast countrieshave sent requests to Israeli governmentagencies seeking asylum, visas, and evenoffering to serve in the Israel DefenseForces (IDF) and the Mossad spy agency.

Israel’s Foreign Ministry told the YediotAhronot newspaper that it is evenreceiving requests from “members ofArab parliaments, members of politicalmovements, and other importantpolitical figures.”

“You are the only country [in the region]that respects personal freedom,” wroteDawoud, a computer technician fromIraq seeking political asylum in Israel.

“The people of Israel are the strongestand most cultured in the region,” wroteanother young man from Iran who wantsto move here with his family.

Houmam from Iraq asked for a loan fortreatment for his sick father, saying, “Iknow you [Israelis] love to help others.”

Most requests were submitted via the Foreign Ministry’s Arabic website, though others wrote directly to theMossad and IDF.

Muzzling the Gaza MediaIsrael Today

In a blatant attempt to restrict freedomof the press, Hamas has announcedthat journalists must apply for a visafive days before arriving in the GazaStrip. “This requirement would obvi-ously hinder the ability of journaliststo cover Gaza,” the Foreign PressAssociation in Israel said. Until now, journalists have routinely crossed intoGaza from Israel.

Before the Hamas ruling went intoeffect, Swedish freelance reporter TerjeCarlsson was almost denied entry intoGaza, despite having reported fromthe coastal territory half-a-dozen timesbefore. The reason was that Hamas haddecided to blacklist Carlsson’s “fixer”—a person who arranges contacts andinterviews for visiting journalists andtakes them around. After reluctantlyallowing him to enter Gaza, Hamasofficials instructed Carlsson to find anew “sponsor” that the group approved.

Carlsson says the restrictions are rem-iniscent of the former Soviet Unionand that Hamas wants fixers to knowthat the only way for them to makemoney is not to be critical of theregime. “This is a way to tighten theflow of information,” he said.

Al-Qaeda’s EnglishMagazine Israel Today

A little-known fact is that al-Qaedahas been in the business of English-language media for several years. Justtwo weeks after the 10th anniversaryof the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the U.S., al-Qaeda publishedthe seventh issue of its English-languagemagazine Inspire, which is postedonline to gain as much exposure aspossible.

The latest issue is a tribute to the 9/11attacks and calls them the “GreatestSpecial Operation of All Time.” Otherarticles in the 20-page issue praise theIslamic agenda and global jihad, andpromise future attacks on all “countrieswith which Islam is at war.”

Hitler’s minister of propaganda, Joseph Goebbels, said, “The English follow the principle that whenone lies, one should lie big, and stick to it. Theykeep up their lies, even at the risk of lookingridiculous.” It is often simplified as: “Tell a bigenough lie long enough, and people will believeit.” Putting this into practice, Islam claims tobe a “religion of peace.” With this repeated lie,it has held the West’s emotions captive andnumbed our brains until we have been cowedinto a politically correct fear of offending Muslims, while they openly call for world domination andcelebrate 9/11. Palestinian archaeological revisionism aims to nullify

Rewriting Jewish HistoryBy Giulio Meotti, www.YNetNews.com

Palestinians are using archaeology to advancetheir statehood bid. Prominent archaeologistGabriel Barkai called it “cultural intifada.”

The PA will seek World Heritage status forthe birthplace of Jesus—Bethlehem—nowthat the UN’s cultural agency (UNESCO) hasadmitted them as a full member. HamdanTaha, the Palestinian Authority minister whodeals with antiquities and culture, also listedNablus and Hebron among 20 cultural her-itage sites which he said could be nominatedas World Heritage Sites.

Professor Taha is a pioneer of the new Pal-estinian revisionism. Last January, NationalGeographic magazine ran a “Travel Palestine”ad that appeared to blot out the State ofIsrael’s existence. Published by Taha’s Min-istry of Antiquities, the ad said, “Palestinelies between the Mediterranean coast andJordan River.” This is just one example ofTaha’s propaganda successes around theworld. (See Ben-Hur article on p. 34.)

As their UN bid brings the Palestinians closerto an independent state, the historical andarchaeological claims are playing an increas-ingly prominent role in the building of thenational consciousness.

The former Vatican archbishop in Jerusalem,Michel Sabbah, who just promoted an appealto the UN and U.S. to “stop the Hebraizationof Jerusalem,” and the current Latin Patri-arch of Jerusalem, Fouad Twal, who isdenouncing the “Judaization of the city,”are just two major Christian figures whoembraced Taha’s rhetoric.

Taha is also mastering a new Palestiniandenial meant to cancel any trace of Jewishpresence in the Holy Land. According toTaha, the Bible is a “mythological narrative.”

On the outskirts of Nablus, Tel Balata, site ofJoseph’s Tomb, is one of Judaism’s holiestsites. Despite Tel Balata being identifiedwith ancient Shechem in Samaria, where theIsraelites buried Joseph’s bones when they

returned from Egypt, Palestinians now claimthat the tomb in reality is the final restingplace of Sheikh Yusuf Dukat, a locally vener-ated Muslim who lived about 150 years ago.

When Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahudeclared in 2010 that two religious sites,Rachel’s Tomb in Bethlehem and the Cave ofthe Patriarchs in Hebron, would be among150 Israeli heritage sites considered for ren-ovation, Taha declared that the Jewish char-acter of the two holy shrines was “artificial”and “a robbery.” He said that even the DeadSea Scrolls were “stolen” from Palestinians.

On October 21, 2010, UNESCO formallydeclared that Rachel’s Tomb is the Bilal ibnRabah mosque, endorsing one of Taha’s lies. The world is now told that the Jews stole thepast, that the Jewish monuments are Arabtreasures stolen by the Zionists, and that theJews are no more than invading colonizers.

Archaeologist Barkai once said that this revisionism is even worse than Holocaustdenial. Yet for now, Palestinians are winningthe war to rewrite history.

Muslims are rewriting the story of the peo-ples, the land, and the past. They are raisingtheir children with propaganda to hate Jewsand Christians. The next generation of Jewsand Christians is underinformed about thetruth of the conflicts. You and I have an obligation to pass on understanding to theup-and-coming Believers. —Myles

JEWISH HUMOR, ETC.

Forbidden FruitA Jewish rabbi and a Catholic priest meet at a New Year’s luncheon. Old friends, they begin their usual banter.

“This baked ham is really delicious,” the priest teases the rabbi.“You really ought to try it. I know it’s against your religion, but I can’t understand why such a wonderful food should be forbidden! You don’t know what you’re missing. Tell me, Rabbi, when are you going to break down and try it?”

With a big grin, the rabbi answers,“At your wedding.”

Note: Zola liked to end this joke somewhat differently: “Try marriage; it’s better than ham!”

Ben-Hur–A Palestinian?Blog.camera.org

The Los Angeles Times has converted Judah Ben-Hur, the fictional enslaved Jewish nobleman who serves as a protagonist in Charlton Heston’s 1959 Hollywood blockbuster, into a “Palestinian nobleman.”

In September, the paper reported:

Based on the novel by LewWallace, the period dramarevolves around Judah Ben-Hur(Heston), a Palestinian noblemanwho is enslaved by the Romans, engages in one of the mostthrilling chariot races ever captured on screen, and evenencounters Jesus Christ.

Of course, there was no such place as“Palestine” in the time of Jesus, sincethe Romans didn’t rename Judea as“Palestina” until a hundred years afterthe death of Jesus (a fact that even The

New York Times had to correct). (See“Rewriting Jewish History” on p. 32.)

In earlier coverage, the Los AngelesTimes had correctly described Ben-Hur’s Jewish/Judean identity. Forinstance, a March 15, 2001 articlereferred to “the rich, honorable Jewishman Judah Ben-Hur;” a June 17, 1994article correctly described him as “theJudean;” and a Sept. 14, 1990 articlereferred to him as “prince of Judea.”

Perhaps the paper’s 2011 remake ofBen-Hur, the Judean, into Ben-Hur,the “Palestinian,” is testament to thesuccess of ongoing efforts to misleadthe masses into believing that a sover-eign Palestinian entity did in fact existbefore 1948, either in antiquity or inmore recent history.

To understand how deeply this revi-sionist history runs, see Zola’s TV serieson DVD Whose Land is It?, offered onpage 18. In it, he interviews HananAshrawi, an Arab spokeswoman forthen-PLO leader Yasser Arafat. Her creative rewriting of history is mind-boggling. Zola keeps his cool andallows Christian Arab commentators to challenge her bizarre conclusions. Itis a must-see for anyone on this Israeltrail! —Myles

Yossi, I’ve heard that one of your rabbis was detained for incitement.

Yes Ahmed,that’s right.

A top Muslim cleric, who was exiled, even spoke in Tahrir Square. There is total freedom of speech!

And? What didhe say?

You call that democracy? Israel should learn from Egypt after the fall of Mubarak. People can say what they think!

That Israel must bedestroyed, of course!

BEYOND A DOUBLE STANDARD

The Crucifix Provokes MuslimsBy Raymond Ibrahim, www.Hudson-NY.org

The Washington, D.C. Office of HumanRights confirmed that it is investigatingallegations that Catholic Universityviolated the human rights of Muslimstudents by not allowing them to forma Muslim student group and by notproviding them rooms without Christ-ian symbols for their daily prayers. The investigation alleges that Muslimstudents “must perform their prayerssurrounded by symbols of Catholicism—such as a wooden crucifix, paintingsof Jesus, pictures of priests and theo-logians which many Muslim studentsfind inappropriate.”

John F. Banzhaf III, a George Washing-ton University professor, asserts thatMuslim students are “particularly of-fended” because they have to “meditate”at the school’s chapels and cathedral, where they pray while “having to stareup and be looked down upon by across of Jesus.”

Banzhaf notes that neighboringGeorgetown University, a nominally“Christian” university, “provides itsMuslim students with a separateprayer room and even a Muslimchaplain”—as if it is not well knownthat Georgetown’s Arab and Islamdepartments receive much largesseby way of donations from the radicalWahhabis of Saudi Arabia—who, inci-dentally, refuse to permit churches, oreven a Bible in their country.

Conversely, consider Muslim behaviortoward Christian symbols, specificallythe crucifix, where Muslims are themajority and thus in charge.

A Christian student in Egypt whorefused to obey his Muslim teacher’sorders to cover up his cross wasstrangled and beaten to death by theteacher and fellow students. Whenthe headmaster was informed of theattack, he ignored it and “continuedto sip his tea.” As usual, Egyptian

media, insisting the conflict was“non-sectarian,” covered it up.

The Maspero massacre, in which theEgyptian military killed dozens ofdemonstrating Christians—includingrunning over live Christians witharmored vehicles—was a product ofanti-Christian sentiment. Muslimsinsisted that a Coptic church bestripped of its dome and cross, so itwould not resemble a church. As aMuslim elder put it, “the Cross pro-vokes us and our children.” WhenChristians refused to budge, Muslimsdestroyed the church. This is whatChristians were protesting when theEgyptian military mowed them downto cries of “Allahu Akbar” (Allah isGreater”).

Where Islam is weak, Muslims, spear-headed by Islamist organizations likethe Council on American IslamicRelations [CAIR], demand respect fortheir “human rights.” Where Islam isstrong or dominant, Muslims simplyviolate the human rights of others. Inall cases, the motivation is the same:to suppress all things “infidel” until,in the words of the Koran (2:193),“idolatry is no more and Allah’s reli-gion reigns supreme.”

Spot on! My friend former Muslimterrorist Walid Shoebat wryly notes,“The evangelicals will give you aheadache, but the Muslims will takeyour head off”—a disparity deftlyillustrated in this article. —Myles
