Message frOM The CEO

On behalf of Iowa Public radio and its board of directors, I would like to thank you for investing your time - listening, logging on or attending our events - and your gifts that will allow us to sustain the organization for years to come. Your contribution plays such an important role in enabling our network to deliver the highest-quality programming throughout the state of Iowa.

Your gifts helped IPr strengthen the impact of our work in the community, ensuring that there is always a space where true learning takes place, where in-depth information and fresh ideas are exchanged, and where the world can be explored on your terms.

specifically, I am delighted to share these accomplishments further demonstrating the impact of your gifts:

• Our statewide audience grew — evidence that Iowans enjoy our programming and continue to access our content through the radio, streaming online or via their mobile device.

• Our membership grew — we found our listeners enjoy the ‘shorter’ on-air fund drive and as a result we acquired more members during the campaign.

• Our corporate sponsorship support grew — more than 400 businesses invested in IPr, a 48% increase over the previous year.

• In News, more than 25 of IPr’s local stories aired nationally on NPr and our journalists — again — were honored with several regional and national awards for journalism excellence.

• In Talk, our team launched the first of many political discussion forums featuring eight regional and national political experts and drawing a crowd of almost 200 from ages 18 – 80 years old.

• In Music, we increased the visibility of Iowa’s symphonies and orchestras by adding a “third play” of their performances and increased our recording and live broadcasting of many Iowa musical groups — from the Maia Quartet in Cedar falls to Pieta Brown in a coffee house in Charles City.

all of these efforts are testament to our mission of enhancing civic and cultural connections across the state — strengthening Iowa’s communities.

We recognize that people don’t give their time, talent and treasure because an organization has needs — people give because an organization meets needs.

Thank you for your support and as always, thanks for listening.

Mary grace herrington

I’m a mEmbEr bECausE ...

If you could consume something guaranteed to make you smarter, better informed, wittier, more global and often delightfully entertained,

wouldn’t you seize it in an instant? That’s what being an IPr member does for a person. Thank you for your fine programming!

— Barb, Urbandale

I listen to hear news about my state, my country, the world. I listen to hear tremendous interviews, discussions on timely topics, touching stories. I listen for new music, old music, jazz, classical, world, rock, independent

singer-songwriter, world-famous, and local musicians and music.

NPr is my favorite radio station. That’s why I contribute.— Jennifer, Cedar Falls

We are members of Iowa Public radio because its news is always the “straight skinny” on what has and is happening virtually everywhere in

our world. Our day would be lacking the sustenance of unbiased news and information that we definitely rely on if IPr would cease to exist.

— Harold and Joyce, Mason City

Iowa Public radio pulled me through a really tough time in my life, filling my mind and heart with beautiful music and lessening the stress and strain of my days! Bless you all!

Long-time listener Marian higgins passed away on July 2, 2011. Marian was an avid listener of Iowa Public

radio for as long as her children can remember. IPr kept her entertained and well informed,

and it was one of the causes she felt was well worth her yearly support. she was proud of the

cultural heritage of Iowa and felt that public radio was a large part of maintaining that tradition.

she listened to all of the programming on IPr, but especially appreciated Talk of Iowa since it supplied

her with tips on activities, events and places to eat for her visiting children and grandchildren, all of whom live out of state.

Marian loved programs like Car Talk, Whad’Ya Know and Wait, Wait, Don’t Tell Me, but it was the news and information that kept her listening. It was

nearly impossible to bring up a current event or even a passing fad that she was not already familiar with. When asked how she had already heard of

these topics, she would always answer, “good old Iowa Public radio!”

Iowa Public radio will miss Marian higgins and remains grateful to her family and friends for their generosity to sustain our programming.
