Our Monthly Bulletin Nan Chiau Primary School April 2017
Dear Parents,
The first term has come to an end. It was a fun, busy and fulfilling term.
In addition to celebrating our 70th School Anniversary, our students
have also participated in various competitions, concerts and sports
events. I would also like to take this opportunity to extend my heartfelt
thanks to all our teachers, staff, Alumni, students and parents who have
graciously lent their support in one way or another at various events held
in Term 1.
I hope that our students are fully recharged and ready for the new Term.
Term 2 will be another fulfilling term with many activities in stored, one of which is the
Primary 5 learning journey to the NEWater Visitor Centre to learn about Singapore's water
sustainability strategy and the importance of water. Another highlight for the term is the
Primary 3 learning journey to SHHK to learn about the culture and history of SHHK. There
will also be the much anticipated annual SHHK Inter-school Sports Meet. I know that our
athletes have been training hard and our school will be there to cheer them on as they display
exemplary sportsmanship.
To end my note, I have a piece of good news to share with you! I am pleased to announce
that the Business Excellence Assessment Committee from SPRING Singapore has endorsed
our school to be of Singapore Quality Class and People Developer status. This is affirmation
and motivation to continue our improvement efforts in reviewing our processes for the
holistic development and education of our students. We will continue to uphold the name
of the school and make the necessary improvements to take Nan Chiau Primary School to
greater heights!

Road Safety
For students walking to the school
Please advise your child to use the appropriate pedestrian crossing and
adhere strictly to traffic light signals when entering the school. Remind
your child not to use mobile phones or other electronic devices when
crossing the road. Wait for vehicles to come to a complete STOP before
crossing even though the traffic light is in the pedestrians’ favour. Your
child should practice the kerb drill before crossing:
Stop • Look right • Look left • Look right again
Raise their hands while crossing in order to alert the drivers
For parents who are driving
We have observed that our parents continue to drop their children off along the main road
outside Gate A and Gate B. This causes inconvenience to road users and nearby residents.
For the safety of our students, please drop off your children only at Gate C. Do not park your
cars at the kerb side along Anchorvale Link as this obstructs traffic. If needed, park your
vehicles at the public car park opposite the school. We appreciate your cooperation with traffic
marshals who are our parent volunteers and the security guards to ensure overall safety of
everyone and smooth traffic.
As role models to our children, let us demonstrate safe practices through our actions and be a
responsible road user.

School Events
Primary 2 Learning Journey to Kidzania
The Primary 2 students visited Kidzania for their Learning Journey. They experienced different
jobs showcased in Kidzania. They had the tricky task of managing their time to experience as
many jobs as they could. They also learn how to budget and use their ‘Kidzo’ dollars (the
currency used to trade in Kidzania) wisely. On that day, the students had many opportunities
to exercise decision-making.
“I feel very excited and happy to learn about the many occupations. I love the hands-on
activities such as baking buns and cutting sweets.” - Johanna Boh (2PS)
Nan Chiau 70th Anniversary SHINES Carnival and Home-Coming Reunion Tea
Nan Chiau High School organised the SHINES Carnival and Home Coming Tea Reunion on
11 March 2017 as part of the Nan Chiau 70th Anniversary Celebration. The Carnival had many
food and games stalls set up by Nan Chiau High students and their Parent Support Group. Many
of our students, parents and staff participated in the Telematch events and Carnival. It was a
joyous occasion with a festive mood as staff, students and parents enjoyed the activities
together as a big Nan Chiau family. In the afternoon, Nan Chiau Alumni members had a great
time catching up and reminiscing about the good old school days with former classmates,
teachers and principals. It was a moment of nostalgia that would be fondly remembered by all
who attended.

Primary 1 to 6 Story Sharing by Ms Tan Ter Cheah
The school invited Ms Tan Ter Cheah, the author of the book ONE, to
give an assembly talk in conjunction with the school’s “Readers For Life”
programme. This is a school-wide programme aimed at cultivating a
reading culture in NCPS. During the
assembly talk, Ms Tan gave a short
sharing of her autobiography, ONE. She
lost her right leg to synovial sarcoma at
the tender age of six and her book is based on her recollections.
She shared about how she persevered and overcame her
difficulties. She used her personal experience as a springboard
to share tips on how everyone can overcome their fear, sadness,
anger to become someone useful and independent. She even
brought a prosthetic leg to show our students to enhance their
learning and understanding.
“I enjoyed the talk by Ms Tan very much as I got to see a
prostatic leg. I realised that the problems I’ve faced is not so
serious after all!” - Christy Lim Ke En (5IT)

Primary 5 Dragon Boat Rowing
The Primary 5 students went for their dragon boat rowing activity at the Kallang Water Sport
Centre during the March holidays. It was conducted by the Singapore Dragon Boat Association.
The activity helped to develop sporting excellence, cultivate mass participation in the sport and
most importantly, team work. The students had an enjoyable morning rowing the boats and
even had a rowing competition just before the end of the session.
“Teamwork and coordination is needed. If I were to
row alone, I would not be able to move the boat but
with the help of my fellow classmates, teachers and
instructors, we were able to row the boat. I am
thankful that I had an opportunity such as this. It is not
every day where you can find twenty over people to
dragon boat with!” - Chloe Ang (5RP)
Primary 5 NEWater Learning Journey
The Primary 5 students visited the fifth NEWater
Visitor Centre. They gained very useful insights on
the purpose of the plant and were awed by the fact
that the plant is able to produce 50 million gallons
of NEWater a day. The students were thankful that
the plant has the capacity to supply water for about
25 years. They were enthusiastic about how the
NEWater Visitor Centre produces enough water to
fill 92 Olympic size swimming pools. The self-
learning kiosks provided the students with
opportunities to explore on their own to acquire more knowledge independently.
“I like the visit to the NEWater Visitor Centre as I have learnt that there are four sources of
water supply. Water is precious and we must save water so that we will have enough water to
use in future.”- Faustine Tan Xiao Xuan (5PS)

Primary 6 Camp
The Primary 6 students attended a camp in
March at the MOE Outdoor Adventure
Learning Centre at Dairy Farm Road. They
worked and played hard together as a class
throughout the 3-day 2-night stay. The
students loved the camp activities as they
were able to discover their interests &
talents as they experienced the outdoor &
adventure activities. They learnt to
overcome their fear and built their
confidence. Through this camp, students
developed a sense of class identity and
belonging as they forged meaningful
friendships through the activities. Students
also had the opportunity to develop their
social and emotional competencies, as well
as leadership skills.
“I am thankful for this entire camp. This camp was beyond my expectations and it had also helped me
to build a stronger friendship with my friends. This camp had helped me reach my inner strength that I
never knew was there. Thank you very much!” - Lim Yik Bin (6SC)
“I am thankful for this camp. I had to step out of my comfort zone
and get to experience how life is like in a completely different
environment. I even got to cook a simple meal outdoors. I also
got to bond with my classmates and teachers through different
exciting and fun activities conducted by the instructors. I am
thankful to all the instructors and teachers as they were the ones
who guided me through when I was facing an obstacle.” - Amber
Chua Zhi Xuan (6PS)
