On Saturday October 27th, ONT Media, along with Alderman John A. Pope’s office, the Hegewisch Community Committee (HCC), Baltimore Foods and Hegewisch Fruit Market brought the first annual Oktoberfest to the Hegewisch neighborhood. This inaugural event was held on the property previously occupied by Cousin’s restaurant on 133rd and Baltimore Ave and was attended by over an estimated 250 community residents. The one day event was the first of its kind to be held in the community for over a decade. “We have always tried to open our events to include as many diverse people and organizations as we can,” said Sam Gomez, General Manager of ONT. “From day one we have always felt a community that works together is a strong one…overall a great success!”

Beginning November 5, 2012,

construction crew will start work on the reconstruction

of South Torrence Avenue between 130th street and 134th

Street. The reconstruction is being performed to lower

existing Torrence Avenue and 130th street for a proposal

grade separation at the Norfolk southern Railroad. Closure of South Torrence Avenue is expected to continue through

April 2014.

approximately 18 months. 130th street will remain open. Access to driveways for the

Norfolk southern buildings will be maintained.

The year 1961 brought south Chicago Community Hospital, now known as Advocate Trinity Hospital, one of its

lifelong pediatric doctors. Dr. Harvey DeBofsky maintained his residency at the hospital alongside his pediatric partner Dr. Maris Nasatir, for 51 years. This past August, Dr. DeBofsky decided upon his retirement from his practice after having been a valuable part of the community Born and raised in the city’s Hyde Park neighborhood, Dr. DeBofsky has cared and attended to hundreds, if not thousands, of children throughout the city of Chicago. “[I stood in the area because] I liked the clientele, I liked the hospital and I got to do a lot of things,” said Dr. DeBofsky. “I didn’t think I’d go this long but I was hoping I would stay as long as I had the facilities.”Throughout his years in practice, Dr. Debofsky has seen many children walk through his door. As well as many children of the children he used to care for. Generation after generation of Southeast side families would flock to the Dr. based

on his professionalism and dedication to his practice.“I went to him until I was about 19 and always trusted him as my pediatrician,” says local Southeast side resident and former patient Amanda Rivera. “I chose his practice to care for my children because I felt that he’s always been dedicated to caring for the children in the community”.looking back on his practice, Dr. DeBofsky recalls many patients and has easily seen his fair share of epidemics. He recalls a story about a very particular patient during an outbreak of the chicken pox.“I do remember one patient, this one I will never forget. There was a chicken pox epidemic, this was before the vaccine. The mother called me up and said that the child was breaking out in black and blue spots. So I told her, bring her down to the office. she brought the child down, and like I said this case I will never forget,” recalls Dr. Deofsky. “she was about 5

years old and looked like she had been through a bottle of blue ink. I immediately sent her down to Michael Reese Hospital. We did two total blood exchanges but unfortunately she didn’t make it. she had something that was secondary to the virus. You see this maybe once in a lifetime and that case I’ll never forget.”Though not all cases ended in such tragedy, Dr. DeBofsky prides himself in also being able to help push his patients to go and do great things with their lives. “I’ve had a few go on to very prestigious ivy league schools,” said Dr. DeBofsky. “Which made me feel good. You see kids that came from a very similar background as I did [and] I did my best to push them on. My advice is that if you don’t think that you’d be happy in any other field, then go into medicine.”even with Dr. DeBofsky going into retirement, his presence will still be felt within the walls of Trinity. He will be on the honorary staff and will be attending all conferences. His acknowledgments

He will be missed, especially here at Trinity, but he will always be a part of our family.” At a recent retirement party for Dr. DeBofsky we asked, “What are you going to do with your time once you retire?” Eternally a kid at heart, his response seemed appropriate… “Watch TV… I’m going to watch a lot of cartoons on TV,” said Dr. DeBofsky. Pope, Cook County Circuit Court Judge Marcia Maras and local resident and recent centennial birthday celebrant, Helen Jolly, were among the notable guests present at this year’s Annual Senior Spaghetti Dinner, held on October 20, 2012. since taking office, the alderman has helped arrange this annual event, which features a complimentary three-course meal as well as music and prize raffles for area senior citizens. “This is just a small way to recognize them for all they’ve contributed to the neighborhood and society. We do it, because it’s the right thing to do,” said

Pope.The event was held at the Knights of Columbus hall located at the intersection of 112th and ewing Avenue. The KoC is a community-oriented organization, which takes great pride in participating in charitable activities. Past Grand Knight Darryl Tabernacki explained how the money collected by the KoC’s fundraising is given to three separate state recognized charitable organizations, including Mann Park super stars. local students from st. Francis and George Washington high schools volunteered their services and could be seen serving plates and cleaning up tables. Alderman Pope, who brought his mother along with his son, said that keeping the dinner multigenerational is a great way to give younger people a chance to interact with their elders. “You can hear from someone who was in the war, and it’s not a video game. These people were in dire situations.”

“In 5th grade, I wrote a poem about a girl who wouldn’t dance with me,” CoJack says of the first time he used rhyme to express himself. So begins the journey from Corey Cahill to CoJack. The moniker is surprisingly not a reference to the popular 1970s cop show Kojak. “I knew CoJack as my nickname before I even knew there was a Kojak TV show,” Corey explains. “CoJack” is actually a family nickname, the result of Corey’s older brother combining his new sibling’s first and middle names (“Corey” and “Jack”) back when they were both toddlers. It wasn’t long after writing his first poem that CoJack heard his first rap song. “Bonethugs’ “Crossroads” was the

first rap I heard. I liked the rap, but I couldn’t relate to Bone. I mean, I was a 5th grade, middle-class white kid,” says CoJack. “I couldn’t relate to moving bags or the 1st of the month. Back then, I didn’t really know what the hell they were talking about, I just liked the sound of it.” As the years passed, CoJack honed his poetic skills both on and off the mic. In high school, CoJack listened to and was influenced by groups as eclectic as alt-rap ones such as Insane Clown Posse and Kottonmouth Kings, as well as punk bands like NOFX and nu-metal chart-toppers limp Bizkit. Poetry and rock-influenced modern rappers may have been his entry point, but he used them as stepping-stones to find the roots of hip hop. “I grew out of all that and learned about the world of hip hop and how it started. I mean

you got to look at the history of Kool Herc in New York to see where that all began.” CoJack’s interest in making hip-hop was cemented after he heard a song by indie rap duo Eyedea and Abilities. In their work, CoJack found that a rap’s subject matter didn’t just have to be about street or party cultures. It could also be about philosophy. “He was 19 and rapping about Copenhagen’s interpretations of Quantum physics,” CoJack beams.

Halloween Bash 2012

With an impressive DJ lineup, ONTertainment hosted a Halloween Bash like none other in the area, at Small World Inn on October 26th. In the mix that night were Mix Master DJs: Joe JamMasterC, DJ Mad One, DJ IllBoy, DJ Absolute, DJ Pete Roxx, DJ Geo, DJ louie Bird, DJ Chase and DJ Frisco. The mix of DJs easily brought in a variety of

local faces of all ages. For best female and male costumes of the night $50 was awarded, while bottles of Miller lite were the prize for those who were able to answer Halloween themed trivia questions correctly throughout the night. CoJack recalls the first song he recorded, a remix of a Tom Petty hit. The recording was done at home on a battery-operated tape recorder, but led to more professional studio time. “I showed it to a friend’s cousin, who showed it to this guy Buddy G who had his own studio. I wrote verses and songs all the time, and he made beats so he’d record me.” CoJack has since been more active in local venues, often performing with a three-piece backing band made up of friends who also grew up on Chicago’s southeast side. Dave Granado, Andy Celio and Dan Pistello helped CoJack win ONT’s Battle of the Bands, held on saturday, June 16th at Papi Chulo’s.Today, CoJack has released his first official album, Clear My Mind. When asked about his inspiration, his answer was simple: “life is the influence. It’s a mixture of everything. What I read, what I hear, what I think. everything

could and should inform your art, I think.” The fact that CoJack draws from many creative wells is evident on the new album. Scattered throughout the 15 tracks are references to 80s pop culture, the writings of Plato, biblical tales, the evils of colonialism following Columbus’ arrival in the Americas, and yes, the TV show Kojak. CoJack’s eclecticism makes it unsurprising to hear both afro-centric 90s group Arrested Development and Bob Dylan mentioned in the same breath. The subject matter of the album varies from feel good party songs to tracks about blue-collar struggle and heartache. In Just a song, CoJack offers up a critique of street violence and discusses the role media plays in shaping a culture that glorifies drug dealers. Just a few tracks later, Rivers offers listeners CoJack’s reflections on man’s fascination with life and death. “I never wanted to fake the funk or act

like I was gangster. You gotta keep it real, bottom line. With music, it’s about the right mix of medicine and sugar. People want a lot of sugar in their music. It’s almost like you need a bottle full of sugar to help that dash of medicine go down,” said CoJack. “There are lines about the human condition and more introspective things trying to make the song deeper. But you can’t be like that in every song. People sometimes just want to party. You gotta mix the medicine in. Trick them into listening to something deep, and maybe trick them into thinking more than they wanted to.”When asked what he does to command a listener’s appreciation, CoJack considered carefully before answering, “There’s really no blueprint, but I look at it as a three-tier system. You can respect music, feel music and relate to music. Respect is the technical aspect, how well it’s put together. Feeling something is just connecting to it on some level.

Relating is finding it familiar to your life. And just because you don’t relate to something doesn’t make it whack, you can still feel or respect it. I can respect Twista, I can respect and feel Bone. I like to say something that people can relate to. If I can do something that makes other people feel good and I feel good about doing it, then it’s good, right?” CoJack says he will continue making music because, “Making music is making meaning out of an apparently grandly meaningless life. Humans are just a flash in the pan, a gust in the wind. Most of what we do doesn’t really matter in the grand scheme of things, but I have fun creating meaning. I like to express myself and music became the medium.”

Am i A Communist?

First of all, I need to acknowledge that I may get in trouble for what you are about to read but, in this country, we have a thing

called free speech so bare with me. You might be saying to yourself, but if I am a communist, free speech shouldn’t apply to me right? Well, now I think we are ready to continue, because as the title suggests, I need to know if you, the reader, can help me find out if I am, in fact, a communist/socialist or not. The first thing I must admit to is that I have recently begun to receive, nearly completely free, medical coverage, or better known as socialized medicine, just like the people that live in Cuba! I should also mention the medical coverage I receive is provided to me due to my membership in an organization that may also have communist roots. Which anti-American facility do I go to receive medical coverage from you might ask? The Jesse Brown VA Medical Center. Here is a hint as to the socialist organization I belonged to in the past; it has to do with the “V” in “VA”. I am a proud Marine Corps veteran, you know, the organization that claims its members as property of the state? Did you know the government also provides its military members with clothes, food, shelter, medical coverage and a paycheck? Do you know how the government pays for all of this? With tax money, or as we fellow socialists like to call it, redistribution of wealth. As a matter of fact, redistribution of wealth is also how we pay for our roads, police, fireman and teachers, just to name a few. Also, while on active duty, I received such perks as all expense paid travel to exotic places like somalia, Kuwait and 29 Palms California, and in each location I was provided quarters that were fit for a king no less! Does being a military veteran mean I am a communist? Isn’t everything I just described almost the definition of communism? Now to admit the second reason I may

be a communist. I currently belong to an organization that many in this country seem to consider to be socialist. I am a dues paying member of seIu local 1, and everyone knows, all unions are just a bunch of commies right?This leads me to what I feel might be the most conclusive evidence as to why I must be a communist and that is because I love professional baseball! Actually, I like just about all of the major professional sports organizations, almost all of which, just so happen to be some of the biggest communistic organizations in the world.How could this country allow these organizations that practice such communistic beliefs as revenue sharing, collective bargaining agreements, and unionized membership, to operate here!? Did you know that MlB teams are actually penalized for being too capitalist? It’s called a luxury tax, and did you know that many professional sports organizations operate under something they call salary caps? This means that regardless of how much money any particular team has to spend, there are major penalties if they spend over an agreed upon amount. Have you heard of the MlB team called the Nationals? Did you know that they used to be called the Expos and they were located in Canada? The team was in dire financial trouble, but instead of letting the free market system do its job; do you know what they did? They didn’t allow the team to financially fail…COMMuNIsM! Did you know that when you buy your favorite team’s clothing, or watch them on TV or go to a game that money doesn’t just go to the team you are a fan of, a little goes to every team in their respective league… ReDIsTRIBuTION OF WeAlTH! And we all know every athlete in professional baseball and most other professional sports receive the best health care in the world, and all for free… sOCIAlIZeD MeDICINe!So, the next time you hear people say how they think socialized medicine, redistribution of wealth and collective bargaining agreements are all reasons to be deported and polar opposite of the most cherished American ideals, you can look them straight in the eye and say, “You sir, or madam, have no idea what you are talking about!”Well… am I communist? Or am I just about the most patriotic American you have ever heard of… you tell me.

r E V i E W: Ben Affleck’s e x c e l l e n t thriller Argo does what all films based upon ‘true stories’ should: Find a historical tale very few are familiar with, and tell it with great

fiction. At the outset of the Iranian Hostage Crisis, CIA operatives must rescue six escaped diplomats by pretending they are part of a Hollywood film crew shooting a fake sci-fi film: ‘Argo.’ This movie is wonderfully made, and features a tremendous ensemble cast. It’s a fun and extremely tense film. It is the kind of story that absolutely deserves to be a movie, and Affleck proves himself the perfect man for the job. That is the mark of spectacular filmmaking, and the clearest sign of Affleck’s directorial talent is his ability to assemble and creatively enable a truly remarkable crew. Chris Terrio’s script is outstanding, moving through complex exposition briskly and without a hint of dryness; cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto’s work is measured and reserved, effectively atmospheric without calling attention to itself; the lovely, understated musical score by Alexandre Desplat works in flawless harmony with the visuals; Sharon Seymour’s intensely tangible production design evokes the period with ease; and William Goldenberg’s editing is rapturous, mastering various tempos with expert precision for maximum tension. If Affleck has established himself as one of American cinema’s single most exciting directors, he’s done so by understanding that filmmaking is not about ego, but teamwork. Though Argo contains some meaningful and timely analysis of America’s relationship with the Middle east – which is inseparably linked to the film’s discussion of action-based morality – I do not find it quite as emotionally or intellectually stimulating as Affleck’s earlier works, Gone Baby Gone and

The Town. It is a simple matter of taste, as my interests always lean towards the character driven, and Argo, while not objectively weaker in any noticeable way, is much more preoccupied with plot. This is a straightforward, crowd-pleasing thriller. Argo is, absolutely worth seeing.

Affleck has taken an unbelievable slice of reality and miraculously improved upon the truth, and the results could hardly be more satisfying.

The George Washington High school Girls’ Junior Varsity swim Team took 9th Place at City Finals on saturday, November 3, 2012 at North side Prep High school out of 25 schools in Chicago. After coming off a successful regular season this year, the GWHs JV swim team went 8-0 this year and the GWHs Varsity swim Team went 12-2 this year. The girls did a tremendous job despite most being new to the sport of swimming and competing at a high school level. With exceptional coaching from Head Varsity Coach Androniki Ganczewski, Varsity Coach Rachel Yzaguirre, and JV Coach Marisol Cholewick, the girls that were brand new to the pool ended the season looking like they’ve been swimming for years.On sunday, November 4, 2012, the Girls’ Varsity swim Team took to the pool at the University of Illinois

at Chicago (uIC) competing at their City Finals. last year, the GWHs Swim team had only ten girls all year swimming multiple events but this year the team had over 35 girls tryout and 27 made it on the 2012 GWHs Swim Team. The GWHs Varsity swim Team placed 11th out of 32 city schools. They had only lost two previous meets being that this was their first year in a super Conference competing against high schools like little Village, lindblom, Morgan Park, Chicago H.s. of Agricultural science and Kennedy. Three competitors placed in their individual events for the GWHs Varsity swim team. For the 50 yard freestyle and the 100 yard butterfly, Samantha Sosa, in the 500 yard freestyle was Amanda Morales Quintana and in the 100 yard backstroke was Bobbie Gorski. Three of the GWHs Junior Varsity competitors placed in their individual events as well. In the 50 yard freestyle

was Nadia estrada, in the 100 yard butterfly was Haidy Perez and on the 100 yard backstroke was Alicia Jimenez. support the GWHs Girls’ Varsity team saturday, November 10, 2012, 1 p.m. at lincoln Way east High school in Frankfort, Illinois for the state Sectionals. In other sports news at George Washington High school, the GWHs Boys’ 16 inch softball team took the win in the softball tournament this year versus lane Tech High school in the finals. The tournament took place at the Chicago High school of Agricultural Science and it was quite an upset as lane Tech had won the tournament for the last three years in a row. Also, congratulations goes out to the GWHs Boys’ soccer Team making it all the way to the state semi-finals this year. Good luck next year.
