Why here in Poughkeepsie? Many factors are taken into account before a new refugee resettlement office can open in a given area, including access to affordable housing, transportation, schools and employment opportunities. We are proud Poughkeepsie has met all this criteria and are confident it will serve as a safe and welcoming place for refugees. Where will the refugees come from, and when? As a global humanitarian organization and refugee resettlement agency, we support the displaced and the vulnerable from all over the world—not exclusively from any one country of origin. We look forward to welcoming refugees to Dutchess County in 2017. What are most refugees like? Refugees are ordinary people seeking safety and freedom. They are parents, children, teachers, neighbors—ready to contribute skills, determination and hope to their new communities. Where will CWS Poughkeepsie be located? CWS only recently received approval from the State Department to open this new refugee resettlement office, so CWS staff is currently searching for an office location in Poughkeepsie. What kind of services will CWS Poughkeepsie offer? CWS Poughkeepsie will offer newly arrived refugees basic needs support, case management, cultural orientation, health access assistance, and job preparation and placement help. What is Church World Service, exactly? Church World Service is a faithbased organization transforming communities around the globe through just and sustainable responses to hunger, poverty, displacement and disaster. CWS is also one of nine refugee resettlement agencies in the United States. The federal government contracts with refugee resettlement agencies like CWS to resettle refugees across our country and directly administer services that help newly arrived refugees rebuild their lives and become selfsufficient, productive members of their new communities in the U.S. What is CWS Poughkeepsie? CWS Poughkeepsie is CWS’ new refugee resettlement office in Poughkeepsie, New York. Already, CWS resettles refugees in three New York locations: Syracuse, Rochester and Buffalo. Across the U.S., CWS directly administers nine local offices —now including Poughkeepsie—and contracts with an additional 25 affiliate offices around the country. Together, CWS’ 34 offices partner with local organizations, volunteers, and faith communities to help refugees resettle. How experienced is CWS in refugee resettlement and immigration work? Very. Over the past 70 years, CWS has helped more than 850,000 refugees, Cuban and Haitian entrants, and other immigrants rebuild their lives. Whether by serving the most vulnerable where they are or by fostering welcoming communities and networks of vitality, CWS has been helping refugees resettle and rebuild ever since it opened its doors in 1946. Learn more about CWS’ extensive work with refugees and immigrants on our website: cwsglobal.org. Why is it so important that we help refugees right now? Today, we face the worst humanitarian crisis since World War II. More than 65 million people worldwide are forcibly displaced from their homes because of war, violence or persecution. Last year, an average of 24 people were forced to flee every minute. A staggering 51 percent of all of the world’s refugees in 2015 were children. our new refugee resettlement office cwspoughkeepsie.org | @CWS_global ABOUT CWS POUGHKEEPSIE Paul Jeffrey
