Holy ursday was the most beautiful day of our Lord’s life. It was the greatest day of His love and tenderness. ere would be an end to His suerings, and Good Friday was to last only a day. But Holy ursday would continue to the end of time. For it was that very day He gave us the gift of the priesthood and the gift of the Eucharist – a life, a love, a presence.

In the year 2008, Pope Benedict XVI, speaking about the Eucharist, called it a school of charity and solidarity. He said, “e Lord and Creator of all things became a ‘grain of wheat’ to be sown in our land, in the furrows of our history. Christ became bread in order to be shared. He became our food in order to give new life, His own divine life.”

On Holy ursday we remember, we celebrate, we believe. at day the mystery of love was communicated. Jesus had fullled His promise. His love is perpetuated on earth. He is here with us to nourish us, to strengthen us, to make us “divine” and give eectiveness to our prayers, works, joys and suerings.

at dramatic scene – Jesus got up from the table and put on an apron. He knelt and washed their feet. e tenderness of that moment! I choose to wash your feet because I love you. en one simple question: “Do you realize what I have done for you?” I have shown you my love, I have given you my love, and I have given you an example. “What I have done – so you must do!”

In a very special way, Holy ursday is the most beautiful day for priests as we remember, celebrate, and believe that God has marked us indelibly and made us shepherds after His own heart.

is year, the good Lord gave the Archdiocese of Saint Paul and Minneapolis a sign of His tenderness in the person of a new shepherd, Archbishop Bernard Hebda, an ardent but gentle servant of the Gospel.

We rejoice in the Lord always, and we look to our men who now “go to the altar of God.” ey are preparing to walk the way of Jesus, the man of passionate love – hopefully with reverence and gratitude.

We pray for their journey and oer some moving words for them to ponder as they remember, celebrate, and believe:

Supper was special that night.ere was both a heaviness and a holiness hanging in the air.We couldn’t explain the mood. It was sacred, yet sorrowful.

. . .We were dwelling in the heart of mystery.ough dark the night, Hope felt right

as if something evil was about to be conquered.

And then suddenly the One we loved startled us all. He got up from the tableand put on an apron. Can you imagine how we felt? God in an apron!

Tenderness encircled us as He bowed before us.He knelt and said, “I choose to wash your feet — because I love you.”

seminary newswelcome, archbishop bernard hebda!

e Saint Paul Seminary School of Divinity welcomed the news on Holy ursday that Pope Francis had appointed Bernard A. Hebda as the Archbishop of Saint Paul and Minneapolis. Archbishop Hebda has served as apostolic administrator to the diocese since June 2015.

With the Triduum as the setting for the announcement from Rome, Archbishop Hebda recognized the connection between the timing and the role of a diocesan bishop: “Our Lord came to serve rather than be served, and a Holy ursday nomination is a wonderful reminder for a new archbishop that it’s all about service.”

Archbishop Hebda will be ocially installed on May 13 at the Cathedral of Saint Paul. On May 14, he will ordain eology III seminarians to the transitional diaconate at the Basilica of St. Mary in Minneapolis. Two weeks later, he will ordain eology IV seminarians to the priesthood on May 28 at the Cathedral of Saint Paul.

“Our Holy Father has given us good news of great joy,” said Msgr. Callaghan. “It was an answer to prayer, for we have come to know Archbishop Hebda as a father, a brother, a friend.”

e seminarians, graduate students, priests, faculty and sta of e Saint Paul Seminary School of Divinity pray for and look forward to working with the new shepherd of the Archdiocese of Saint Paul and Minneapolis.

Spring semester for a eology IV deacon means that ordination is just around the corner. For the past four years, he has been immersed in a variety of experiences that are designed with the four pillars of formation in mind: human, intellectual, spiritual and pastoral.

is year, 16 men will be ordained to the priesthood, representing eight dioceses and one religious order. Some heard the call to priesthood when they were very young; others as adults. ey are academics, athletes, photographers, musicians, playwrights, artists, carpenters, cooks and travelers. ey come from large and small families as well as urban and rural dioceses.

While their backgrounds, biographies and skill sets vary, they are ready to serve God’s people as priests.

e following pages include a timeline of their journey, from Admission to Candidacy as eology I seminarians to their nal semester as eology IV transitional deacons. Please pray for them as they are ordained and begin their priestly ministry.

For the second year in a row, a group of faculty, lay graduate, and undergraduate students traveled to Honduras to participate in a medical brigade at the Holy Family Surgery Center on the grounds of the Nuestros Pequeños Hermanos orphanage, 23 miles northeast of the capital city of Tegucigalpa.

According to Academic Dean Dr. Christopher ompson, this January Term experience is part of a broader eort by the School of Divinity to provide a theological education that is both comprehensive and culturally sound.

“As an institution we are able to put the Gospel into action,” he said. “Anytime you put yourself in a position to serve with others, God uses that work and blesses it.”

HONDURAS 2017Plans are underway for the January 2017 mission to Honduras. School of Divinity graduate students, faculty and staff are encouraged to contact Associate Dean Dr. Kenneth Snyder for additional information, including scholarship opportunities:

Michael Gross, Master of Arts in Pastoral Ministry It’s day three of surgeries and we’ve had so many amazing encounters with the local Hondurans as well as members of the medical brigade from across the United States. In high supply are both teamwork and good humor.

It has been a joy to put my Spanish to good use as an interpreter and to draw on my chaplaincy experience and oer a pre-surgery prayer whenever it is welcome.

I've been moved by the spiritual fervor of the Honduran people and their great gratitude for everything we try to do through the medical mission. It's really well organized and there is always some way that each of us can chime in to serve one another.

Highlights today were: post-surgery smiles, good humor of the nursing crew, moments in prayer, a hearty meal at supper, and the spirit of solidarity. Looking forward to seeing more patients tomorrow!

Marcus Wobschall, Master of Artsin Theology St. Francis of Assisi is credited with saying, “preach the Gospel always, and, if necessary, use words.” is means that preaching the Gospel primarily involves action, not words, and that our connection to Jesus Christ is manifest by what we do.

As we nish our trip to Honduras, this quote comes to mind because I saw the Gospel lived out in a concrete way without anybody preaching lofty or pious words. e faith of these disciples was evident in their actions, whether it was scrubbing the oor or surgically operating on a patient.

Bishop Michael Warfel, Diocese of Great Falls-Billings, installed 26 men as lectors during the Installation of Lectors Mass on February 23.

During the rite of installation, each seminarian knelt before Bishop Warfel and received the Lectionary as he said, “Take this book of Holy Scripture and be faithful in handing on the word of God, so that it may grow strong in the hearts of His people.”

Along with the 16 eology I seminarians were 10 men preparing for ordination to the permanent diaconate. For each man, installation is a call to a deeper appreciation of the word of God and a commission to proclaim the word during liturgies.

music fills the chapel

Musicians, choral ensembles and chamber choirs have long enjoyed the acoustic and architectural qualities of St. Mary’s Chapel. Recently, some of the region's nest have come to perform sacred music in this prized space.

On February 5, Liturgical Music Director Dr. David Jenkins performed a Baroque chamber music recital on the harpsichord and organ. He was joined by University of St. omas music faculty member Dr. Chris Kachian on guitar, and UST art history professor Shelley Nordtorp-Madson, who lectured on art and costume during the time of Bach.

e Rose Ensemble, an internationally recognized chamber ensemble, performed on February 20. e program,“Sainte-Chapelle de Paris,” featured Medieval and Renaissance vocal music and a world premiere choral piece by Minnesota composer Linda Kachelmeier.

Johann Sebastian Bach was celebrated in the chapel on March 19 with the “Before Bach’s Birthday Bash,” a live broadcast on Minnesota Public Radio featuring local organists and musicians, and then again on April 15 when the Bach Society of Minnesota Orchestra, under the direction of Paul Boehnke, performed with e Saint Paul Seminary Chorale and St. omas’ Schola Cantorem.

Two events remain on the spring music calendar: Exultate, a Twin Cities’ chamber choir and orchestra, will perform “Stabat Mater” on Saturday, April 30, at 7:30 p.m. And premier chorale ensemble Kantorei will perform “Songs of Love and Nature” on Sunday, May 1, at 4:00 p.m.

For parking and ticket information, please visit our website: www.saintpaulseminary.org

Performances are made possible in part by a gift from the Philip and Julia Indihar Merrill Estate and friends of e Saint Paul Seminary. For more information about supporting sacred music at e Saint Paul Seminary, please contact Leah Santer: (651) 962-5791 or [email protected]

SJV then faced o against a team of priests in the championship round. e priests were trailing by three points with .06 seconds left on the clock

when Fr. Aaron Nett, Diocese of St. Cloud, sunk a three-point shot to tie the game. He was fouled on the shot, made a free throw, and led the priests to a 64-63 victory over the young seminarians.

Fr. Nick VanDenBroeke, member of the ordained team and organizer of the annual event for the past several years, said, “I look forward to this game every year as an opportunity to come together as priests and seminarians for a time of fraternity and fun.” Photo credit: D

omas Ryan

omas R. RyanVice President for Institutional Advancement

As our Board of Trustees was developing a joint long-range strategic plan two years ago for e Saint Paul Seminary and Saint John Vianney College Seminary, they wisely believed that, before moving ahead with any major initiative, it was essential to gather feedback from the bishops who send their men to our institutions for formation.

Over the course of several months, sta from the two seminaries visited with 17 dierent bishops. It was an ideal opportunity to share our plans for the future and receive their counsel and feedback. e information we received would be crucial for any Catholic institution, but particularly important for our seminaries.

ough each meeting was unique, two very clear and consistent messages came through. First, there was strong armation of the formation happening at both the college and major seminaries. All expressed great condence in the programs and exhorted that, as we look to the future, we should do so in a way that ensures the quality and faithfulness of the formation. ey stressed that delity to our mission and to the Church needs to be rst and foremost. To do otherwise would be ineectual and problematic.

Second, each bishop stressed the importance of the human element in forming ordained and lay leaders for the Church. An eective ecclesial leader must have more than an academic understanding of the Church’s profession of faith. ey also need to be a witness to that profession and live it with great joy and charity. e bishops were not referring to a supercial joy. ey were talking about the same joy that radiated from St. Stephen’s face as he was being martyred for the faith; the joy that enabled Corrie ten Boom to give God thanks for an infestation of lice while imprisoned in a Nazi concentration camp because “it kept the guards away;” and the joy that comes from the belief that there is grace for the journey and victory at the end.

We know that seminary formation is not an easy task, yet it is more important now than ever before. e world needs joyful, faithful witnesses who can authentically and faithfully lead the Church today and for generations to come.

As you support the seminaries with your nancial gifts, please also support our work with your prayers. Pray that as we move forward, we do so in a way that continues to form highly eective leaders for the Church who are both faithful and joyful.

Planne GIVINGeeGIVINGedddWhen the Protecting Americans from Tax Hikes Act of 2015 (PATH) was signed into law in December 2015, Tom and Danny Merrill wasted no time. Longtime prayerful and nancial supporters of the seminary, the Merrills took advantage of this opportunity to make a tax-free donation to something that, in their words, “will produce great fruit.”

PATH provides permanent extensions of certain tax benets for individuals that have long been temporary, most notably including a provision allowing IRA charitable rollovers. e IRS charitable rollover provision allows IRA owners age 70 ½ and older to donate as much as $100,000 a year directly to one or more qualifying charities.

Other details of this new law include:

• Donations, which count as part of the IRA owner’s required annual withdrawal, are excluded from the taxpayer’s income. • As in prior years, contributions made to non-operating private foundations, donor- advised funds, and supporting organizations do not qualify for the rollover benet, nor do distributions from employer-sponsored retirement plans such as SIMPLE IRAs and SEPs.• In addition, the rollover must be distributed directly from an IRA custodian to the designated charity.

Who is most likely to benet from using the IRA charitable rollover?

• Taxpayers with signicant charitable contributions • Taxpayers subject to a state income tax • Taxpayers who may be subject to the federal alternative minimum tax (AMT)• Taxpayers who do not itemize

For the Merrills, they chose the PATH option for the seminary because they believe in supporting those who give their lives to serve the Church. “We are so grateful for those who answer the call,” they said. “We can’t think of a better investment than supporting those who are willing to serve as apostles.”
