DIRECTORS NOTE

TALKING WITH THE BOOK AUTHOR JENNIFER L. HOLM

Jalmer, “…it’s just one more piece of work we got to do turning this wilderness into a farm valley…I’m not sure I can do this..”

This show has pain. This show has love. This show has family. This show has sense of place. I hope you will fi nd this show as touching, painful, and beautiful as we have.

May Amelia, “I’m a Miracle. ‘Cause I was the fi rst girl born on the Naselle. But I wonder if I was a mistake.”

A sense of place. The Pacifi c Northwest is identifi ed by its mud, soggy moss, and rain; but also by sunshine, mountains, and rivers. Setting this story in the Naselle valley brings the landscape to life. It’s not just a cabin in the woods. It’s part of the valley, and the reinvention of the landscape.

Family. These characters face adversity and can only survive by pulling together. What would splinter some family’s bonds pull this one together.

The Author’s Note in the book tells us that your grandaunt’s diary inspired you to write Our Only May Amelia. How closely did you adhere to her diary when writing the novel?

In actual fact, my grandaunt’s diary was rather slender—only thirteen entries over a seven-year period (1899–1906). She generally wrote in it once a year, typically to relate some big news such as a baby being born or a wedding or a birthday. I was inspired more by the idea of being a girl at that time period than the actual incidents she wrote about in her diary. I did, however, borrow the name of her dog, Bose (Bosie in Our Only May Amelia) as well as the name of her best brother (Wilbert). In real life, baby Amy was Aunt Alice’s older sister and she lived to be a ripe old age.

What do you imagine your grandaunt Alice would say about the way you transformed her diary into Our Only May Amelia?

Love. May Amelia is a vibrant character. Her independence, strong will, and sensitivity are requirements for her survival in 1900. But those traits are pushed to limits by the arrival of her grandmother and new sister. She is sent to new places within herself. This show needs to be told: a young girl transitioning in life, trying to fi nd her place. And what she needs is her family.

Pain. We started our process with a quote from Picasso, “Destroy the thing, do it several times. In each destroying of a beautiful discovery, the artist does not really suppress it, but rather transforms it, condenses it, makes it more substantial.” This show has pain, confusion, and fear. But what is born? Love, connection, and family.

- Jon Tallman

I think Aunt Alice would be very pleased that her girlhood diary inspired me to write. She was a much-beloved teacher in the Naselle River Settlement for many years, and always loved a good yarn.

What are your favorite children’s books?

Reading is my favorite thing in the world. I love anything by Lloyd Alexander, especially The Black Cauldron. I think I read that book a hundred times!

What type of experience would you hope readers derive from reading Our Only May Amelia?

I hope it helps readers be true to themselves . . . even if they get into trouble along the way like May Amelia.

OUR ONLY MAY AMELIA

OUR ONLY MAY AMELIACAST BIOS:

Samantha Chandler (Alma) is thrilled to help tell the story of one NW pioneer family. She is a 5th generation Washingtonian, whose Great-Grandma Fern traveled to Eastern WA in a covered wagon in the late 1800’s, and whose Grandma Dorothy grew-up helping to haul water and weed the family’s large garden plot. Grandma Dorothy was from a family as big as the real May Amelia’s, but where there was only one boy. Must be why we all grew up to be such feisty women! As one of the co-founders of OFT, she is thrilled to be onstage in its new home. Many thanks to the cast, crew, and Irina.

Keith Eisner (Jalmer) is delighted to be playing in OFT’s new and very own space. It’s also great to be working again with the directing team of Jon and Sarah, as well as the dynamite tech crew and cast. Previous OFT roles include Korczak in Korczak’s Children, John Brown in The Abolitionist’s Wife, and an ensemble member in The Orphan Train. Thank you for coming to the show.

Clarke Hallum (Kaarlo) is thrilled to be appearing in his fi rst production at The Olympia Family Theater. He has appeared in both the National Tour and 5th Avenue Theatre productions of A Christmas Story the Musical. Clarke also appeared in both the Kids at Play and Season in a Box programs with Capital Playhouse performing in several productions including Secret Garden, The Full Monty, and Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. Many thanks to the entire production team and cast for this wonderful experience!

Kate Hayes (May Amelia) is very excited for the opportunity to play May Amelia. Kate’s family has been in Olympia for 150 years and were some of the fi rst settlers in this area, so this role has particular resonance for Kate! This is Kate’s second production with Olympia Family Theater. You probably saw her as the Irish lass, “Pegeen” in Orphan Train last season. Other favorite roles include: the “Artful Dodger” in Oliver, “Mary Lennox” in The Secret Garden, and “Molly” in Annie, all at Capital Playhouse. She is a Freshman at Olympia High School (the 5th generation of her family to attend

OHS) and, when she’s not involved in a show, she enjoys reading, singing, and playing ukulele and guitar.

Jeremy Holien (Matti) This is Jeremy’s third production for Olympia Family Theater, most recently having been seen in The Abolitionist’s Wife: The Saga of Mary Brown in the summer of 2013. Jeremy would like to thank his mom Debbie, Brian, and all of his other friends and family for their support. He also wants to add that it’s been an absolute pleasure working with many old friends and new ones, and an amazing crew. He hopes you enjoy the show.

Stephanie Kroschel (Mary O’Casey) After performing in The Monster Under the Bed, Steph is thrilled to return to OFT this season. She has also recently been seen in OLTs Red Herring and TAOs Peck of Plays. OFT has been part of her life since high school, and it is an honor to be part of the stories and the family here. Her favorite thing about this production is the honest sweetness in the story. When not onstage, she teaches 6th grade in North Thurston School District and works at Creative Theatre Experience. She sends love and peace to all.

Adam Peters (Wilbert) is a 10th Grader at Olympia High School. He is excited to be in his fi rst majorly-adults show at OFT! Some roles he has played are Mr. MacAfee: Bye Bye Birdie (CTE, Summer 2014), a waiter : Hello, Dolly! (OHS, May 2014), Oberon Fairy/Ensemble: Midsummer/Jersey (OHS, November 2013), Sir Evelyn Oakleigh: Anything Goes (CTE, Summer 2013) Spencer Perry: 8 (directed by Brian Tyrrell, Olympia theater) Ugly: Honk (CTE, Summer 2012), Agwe: Once on This Island (CTE, Summer 2011), Candy Man: Willy Wonka (NOVA School, May 2011), Pirate/Ensemble: Pirates of Penzance (CTE, Summer 2010), Charlie Bradley: The Best Christmas Pageant Ever (Olympia Family Theater, December 2010), and Winthrop: The Music Man (OHS, May 2009). Next year

he is going to be an exchange student in Thailand and he would like to thank his parents, sisters Molly and Lucy, and friends Sydney and Christine for supporting him in his crazy life.

Diana Purvine (Patience) is delighted to be a part of Olympia Family Theater’s “OOMA family”. Her last appearance at OFT was in How the Slug Stole Solstice. Her most frequent roles for the last 25 years have been that of Costumer for various Olympia area theaters, including OFT, and/or supportive parent of actor Paul H. Purvine. She recently returned to the stage appearing in Olympia Little Theater’s Welcome Back to the Five & Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean (2015), Love, Loss & What I Wore (2013) and Night Must Fall (2012). She has a BA in Drama with a Children’s Theater emphasis from the Univ. of WA.

Debbie Sampson (Aunt Alice) is so excited to be performing on the OFT stage in Our Only May Amelia alongside an amazing cast, several of whom she’s fortunate to be performing with again. Her most recent roles include TAO’s productions of Improbable Peck of Plays 3D and Chamber Music. She sends love and thanks to her daughter Hannah, who never tires of helping her run lines. She sends extra special thanks and love to her husband Tim, for always supporting her, and believing all their dreams really will come true.

OUR ONLY MAY AMELIACREW BIOS

Jon Tallman (Director) is honored to be directing again for OFT, after taking the helm for The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe last year. Jon has been on OFT’s stage, work parties, tech deck, director chair, tops of ladders, and under stage decking. This can all be traced back to a life changing conversation outside the Midnight Sun in 2008 about needing a lighting designer for The BFG. Our Only May Amelia represents a change from his fringe theatre stylings. Realism presents a new challenge, and one that is timely. Thanks to KT for covering B’s tooth brushing and bedtimes, and B for (sometimes) cooperating.

Sarah Gene Jolley (SM/light board) is pleased to be a part of another fabulous OFT production, and especially happy to be teaming up with the wonderful and oh-so-talented Mr. Jon Tallman again! A lover and supporter of local theater, Sarah has worked on at least one show every season since OFT started. And now we have our own theater, y’all! Sarah is proud to have worked on boards, stages, and as a tech ninja in theaters around Olympia for the past decade. A million smooches to you, Smoochie. Hey Si: this one’s for YOU!

Joseph Wiley (ASM) is happy to be the assistant stage manager for Our Only May Amelia. He’s really enjoying technical theater and hopes to do more in seasons to come! He’s a 6th grader at Thurgood Marshall Middle School and he enjoys sleeping in, reading, and generally being a boss. Life is sweet in the country... sorry, wrong story. That’s about all there is to him, a normal middle schooler making his way into the world. He hopes you like the show!

Jill Carter (Scenic Designer) is delighted to be OFT’s Resident Designer, with 25+ years of experience in scenic, lighting and projection designs, for a variety of theaters in the NW. Some of her favorite scenic designs include Wind in the Willows and Cinder Edna for OFT, The Nutcracker and Swan Lake for Ballet Northwest and Cyrano de Bergerac, The Tempest, Romeo and Juliet, and

Boom for Harlequin Productions. She is happiest with a paint brush in one hand and a pencil in the other and has been absolutely thrilled to help OFT turn their new home into a lively creative space.

David Nowitz (Scenic Engineer) Building sets is what I do.Though I do show photos too.Do some ushering, working strike.OFT is what I like!

Becky Scott (Costume Designer) is delighted to be working again with OFT, Jon Tallman, and a stellar cast and crew. She began working in theater with the non-profi t Magnolia Children’s Theater in Long Beach, California. At college and under David Emmes’ direction she designed costumes and performed in You Can’t Take It with You, Playboy of the Western World and Blood Wedding and continued to study costume design at CSULB. After a hiatus to raise a family, she again became active in theater and is now associated with Olympia Family Theater as a costumer. Her designs for OFT include Korczak’s Children, Jungle Book, Christmas Story, Little Women, Wind in the Willows, Cinder Edna and The Lion The Witch and The Wardrobe. Becky sends hugs and kisses to her family, friends, and the special guy in her life, grandson James!

Jan Rocks (Prop Artist) has been a part of OFT from the very fi rst year. She enjoys crafting props, hunting for theater treasures at thrift stores, and re-purposing everyday items. She credits Olympia, Procession of the Species, and her friend Wendy, for helping her to express herself as an artist.
