THIRD SUNDAY OF ADVENT
PPastoral Reflection
C.S. Lewis wrote, “Joy is the serious business of heaven.” St. Paul, in his Letter to the Galatians, listed joy as one of the nine fruits of the Holy Spirit along with love, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.
In 1930, newly widowed Irma Rombauer decided to spend a quiet summer in Michigan. She took her recipe collection to work on a possible cookbook. Her book, “The Joy of Cooking: A Compilation of Reliable Recipes with a Casual Culinary Chat,” was privately published in 1931. It became quite popular for the “chat” parts which contained humor, advice, family stories and anecdotes. Five years later, Bobbs-Merrill Publishing Company began publishing it as “The Joy of Cooking” and it has been in continuous publication since.
On the original cover, Irma chose a silhouette of St. Martha, sister of Mary and Lazarus, and the Patron Saint of Cooks. Her daughter, Marion, drew the illustration which shows St. Martha with a purse dangling, a broom in her left hand, and a dinner plate above her head as a halo while “slaying the dragon of kitchen drudgery.”
During the time between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day, families and friends gather and enjoy a variety of traditional favorite foods. It is one of the ways that people of all cultures and traditions find joy during the holidays.
OUR LADY OF GUADALUPE On Monday, December 12, we celebrate the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe. At 5:00 AM, the Spanish Community of St. Andrew’s will begin the celebration with a walk from Veteran's Park to St. Andrew’s Church. At 6:30 PM, Exposition and Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament will be held and a solemn Mass will be celebrated at 7:00 PM. A celebration of “Our Lady” will follow in the Parish Center gym. All are invited to the festivities.
God, give us: the faith we need to help us live, the faith we need to help us love,
the faith we need to help us believe, the faith we need to give us hope,
the faith we need to act with justice... the faith we need to speak your word of truth...
Give us faith that leads us to share what we have in serving the poor; to work for a harvest of justice and peace;
to restore the beauty of your creation... God, give us faith in you
and in our neighbors and in ourselves...
“A time to be born into the waters of Baptism” July 2016 Milan, son of Michelle & Moosa Ayub Penelope A., daughter of Irina & Esteban Beita Naomi, daughter of Maria & Gregorio Garcia
August 2016 Zoey Juarez, daughter of Raquel Perez & Francisco Juarez Allyson, daughter of Micaela & Cesar Juarez Varela Cesar, son of Micaela & Cesar Juarez Varela
You are a child of God. You are wonderfully made, dearly loved, and precious in His sight. St. Andrew’s community welcomes you!
Simbang Gabi Mass
Saturday, December 17 at 6:30 PM, the Filipino Community will celebrate “Simbang Gabi”, the Filipino celebration marking the beginning of “Night Masses” from December 16 to December 24. It is one of the most popular traditions which had been imported by missionaries from Mexico. As Filipinos have moved all over the world, they have brought this tradition with them. It is a tradition open to all members of the community. I would like to invite everyone to come and join us for this Mass. Afterwards, we will have a dinner-reception in the Multipurpose Room of the Parish Center. We invite you to bring your favorite dish. Everyone is invited for the Mass and dinner.

to share those gifts.
ST. ANDREW’S MEMORIAL TREE You may make a gift of a leaf for our St. Andrew’s Memorial Tree and have it inscribed in memory of your loved one. Your gift and loved one’s name
will live on in memoriam and the donations collected from this tree will be used towards the operating expenses of the Parish. The cost of each leaf is $50. (Maximum 30 letter inscription - see sample leaf form). Forms will be available in the back of the Church and at the Parish Center.
FOOD PANTRY ASSISTANCE NEEDED Our food pantry is in need of your help! The many requests for assistance have significantly reduced our supply of the basics used to support our local families who are most in need. If you can donate an item of food, drop it off in either the church before or after Mass, or anytime at the Parish Center, we would be most grateful. Supermarket gift cards or monetary donations are also welcome.

We congratulate our second graders of St. Andrew’s Parish on receiving the sacrament of First Reconciliation. May God continue to bless all of our second graders as they prepare to receive their First Holy Communion in the Spring. Please join us for our annual Christmas Concert on Wednesday, December 14. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. All are welcome. Our eighth graders took their Co-op entrance exams in early November. They will find out the results of their Catholic high school applications in January.
SHINE A LIGHT ON HUMAN TRAFFICKING
In solidarity with Pope Francis’ call to action, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) and Catholic Relief Services (CRS) continue to fight human trafficking. They are urging support for the passage of the Business Supply Chain Transparency on Trafficking and Slavery Act of 2015, H.R. 3226/S. 1968. This legislation would require companies to make information about their products’ supply chains public to ensure their products are not the result of child and forced labor, slavery and human trafficking. Our Catholic faith calls on us to defend life and human dignity, to fight conditions that lead to the enslavement of human beings.
Special Noon Mass
A special Mass and support group meeting for all who are affected by the disease of alcoholism will take place at Church of St. Mary, 20 Legion Place, Closter, on Saturday, December 17 at 12:00 noon. For information, please call 201-768-7565.
