PURPLE IS FOR PREPARATION

If you were a three year old spending time in the atrium of the

Catechesis of the Good Shepherd, you would know what each of the

liturgical colors stands for. You would know that when you see the

priest or deacon wearing purple, we are entering a season of

preparation. This season that begins this weekend is Advent and we

are preparing to celebrate Christmas.

As always, there are several levels of meaning attached to preparing

for Christmas. One preparation has to do with getting ready for

December 25, the day we call Christmas. We remember what

happened in Bethlehem and the great gift that the birth of Jesus has

been, and is to us. We are also encouraged to spend some time in

Advent remembering and celebrating how Jesus is born into our lives

each and every day. In a related way, we can think about the ways

that we can make Christ present for others to see and actually live in

a way that helps to make Jesus present to those around us. And if

that were not enough, we are to prepare for the coming of Jesus at the

end of time. We await his return for the fulfillment of his kingdom.

A word or two of caution and reminder about this season. It goes by

very quickly and our time of preparation is often crowded out by our

anticipated celebrations of Christmas. We are not very good at

waiting. We like things to happen and we like them to happen now.

Advent is counter-cultural for us. It is why it is so important that we

celebrate this season of preparation and waiting so that we can learn

how to do that better.

There are some traditional practices that can help us mark the days

of Advent rather than pretending that it is Christmas already. One of

those is an Advent calendar. These Advent calendars have all the

days marked and usually have some bit of the calendar to open so

that we can be reminded that each day is a day of preparation. We

also traditionally have Advent wreaths that mark the season one

week after the next, giving us a chance to see if we have done

anything to prepare or have we rushed ahead and pretended as if it’s

Christmas.

I would suggest that as many of us as possible celebrate the

Sacrament of Reconciliation, otherwise known as Confession during

this season of Advent. What better way to prepare our lives and

hearts than to come to our God of mercy and receive the gift of

forgiveness. This might also be a good time to remember those who

are less fortunate than you are. Find a way to be charitable toward

those who would benefit from your generosity. Some practice of

voluntary self-emptying helps us to become more dependent on God

and less dependent on ourselves.

When Jesus comes, will there be room for him in our lives?

The Parish Journeys

with the RCIA

Christian Moral Living

“Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter

the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the

will of My Father in heaven.” (Matthew 7:21) But how

can we know God’s will? How do we know what choices

to follow? These questions and others will be discussed

during today’s RCIA session. The most basic principle

of the Christian moral life is the awareness that every

person bears the dignity of being made in the image of

God. The gifts of intelligence and reason enable us to

seek out the true, good, and the natural order of things

established in God’s beautiful creation. However, the

darker impulses toward evil are the effects of original

sin.

Our conscience is our sense of the moral goodness or

evil of a thing. A good conscience is a lifelong formation

and in addition to the natural law, we Catholic

Christians have the Bible, the teachings of Jesus

Christ, the instructions and writings of moral

theologians and the authoritative teachings of the

Church. Using all our resources along with prayer and

practice will help to attain that well-formed conscience

to discern right from wrong and to accept the

responsibility to choose what’s right, God’s will.

Living a Christian moral life is a constant effort to be

one with Jesus making our everyday decisions

according to His mind and heart. When we interact

with our family, friends, co-workers, and strangers we

meet every day, do our actions and words confirm that

we are Christians? If we were on trial for being a

Christian, would there be enough evidence to convict

us?

High School Youth Ministry

We have a fun night for youth group tonight, November

28th! We will be having a video game and board game

night! Come on by, invite your friends, and enjoy the

games together. Our youth group meets from 7:00 pm -

8:30 pm on Sunday nights in the Ministry Center youth

room. It is open to all teens grades 9-12, friends are

welcome and encouraged!

Sunday night youth group exists for several reasons for

your teens. We meet to give your teens a safe place to be

themselves and make real friends. We also teach the faith

in ways that are relevant and interesting for where the

teens are in life. And finally, we like to have a lot of fun

and share the joy of Christ! There is no sign up for youth

group, teens can just show up. All are welcome!

1st Sunday of Advent

“But when these signs begin to happen, stand

erect and raise your heads because your

redemption is at hand.” (Luke 21:28)

We celebrate Advent each year in preparation

for the birth of Jesus, His first coming, as we await His

second coming. What will you do differently this Advent

season to grow in friendship and love with Jesus? How

will you inspire others to do the same? Start by sharing

your God story with others, especially those closet to

you. Invite and accompany them on their faith journey

this Advent.

Together For Life…

Next weekend in our church Allison Vollmer of our

parish, and Mitchell Divine will exchange wedding

vows and we asked God’s Blessing on their marriage.

Congratulations and Best Wishes

to them and to their families!

The Christmas Stories in Matthew and Luke

Presenter: Mark Etling, PhD.

Tuesdays,, December 7 & 14

10:00 am—12 Noon

The story of Christmas in our time is filled with joy and

wonderment about the birth of Jesus.

Mary and Joseph are visited by angels; the birth of the

Child is announced to shepherds by the heavenly

choirs; astrologers from the East come to worship Jesus

because they have seen his star; his life is threatened

by the treachery of King Herod. Yet in their original

context the Christmas stories are risky, even dangerous

tales of treason against the Roman Empire, and the

beginning of the restoration of God’s sovereignty in

Israel.

In this two-part series we will explore the dramatic

stories of Jesus’ birth as told in the Gospels of Matthew

and Luke.

Cost: $20 for series: $10 per session.
