Over the years along with seeing my children and my granddaughter right af-ter they were born, I’ve seen hundreds of newborns just hours after their birth. What a joy to stand with new parents and other family members and join them in the pure joy of seeing new life. Newborns are innocent, tender and give you a sense of hope for the future.

Here we are some two thousand years later and like Mary & Joseph we’re still celebrating the birth of “the” child of history. For Mary and Joseph, in spite of the hardships, I imagine that night was filled with all the emotions each of us have had when our children were born or the first time we held our adopted child. Just like you and me, their hearts were filled with wonder and amazement. Like us their lives would never be the same. However we know for Mary and Joseph not only were they overjoyed with the birth of their son, they realized they were holding the Child of Promise, the Son of God. They realized that their Son would be the One to change the world. He had already changed their lives and would continue to do for the next thirty-three years.

I wonder this year if more of us will take the time to realize just how special Jesus’ birth really is. WIth the amazement of birth comes the reality that God has entered our world so that He could reach us. As life changing as Jesus’ birth was to Mary and Joseph I wonder if through the joy of the season if we’ll be captivated by a child who is God with us. I want to challenge you to allow His birth to change your life by allowing Him to be real in your life. I pray that this season will bring to you a fresh awareness that God is present with you no matter what. May all our lives be filled with the awe of the season but most of all the miracle of our own new birth in Christ. Have a great Christmas celebrating the birth of our Savior,

SShh! Grab your dark shades and go un-dercover to join the exciting Christmas mission of We Three Spies. Agents E, L and F are recruits with the CIK (Christmas Intelligence Kids), a covert group of spies who secretly bring Christmas cheer to the needy. But this year they’re facing an es-pecially difficult challenge: keeping Ms. Harriet (pronounced “Har-ret”) King, a Scrooge-like landlord, from evicting them from their headquarters, confiscating do-

nations, and cancelling their Christmas Nativity program. It takes a little expert espionage and a lot of God’s unconditional love for Ms. King to change her tune as she finally joins the CIK and the entire town in a musi-cal celebration of the true meaning of Jesus’ birth.

This Christmas, your classified mission – should you choose to accept it – is to join We Three Spies as they blow their cover to proclaim joy to the world! Join the HHBC Kids in the Worship Center on Sunday, December 15th at 6:00 p.m. for We Three Spies. It is a great way to celebrate Christmas and enjoy some fun music.

Pre-orders for dVd’sWe are taking pre-orders for the Children’s Christmas Musi-cal CD. We are asking for a $10 donation. A sign-up sheet is lo-cated in the Upper Lobby and Welcome Center.

S T U D E N T M I N I S T R Y N E W S Student Ministry Planning Day

From 9am-12pm Saturday, Dec. 7th I want to invite any MS or HS student to join the Youth staff in evaluating and planning the future of the HHBC Student Ministry.

Senior Ski Retreat Meeting Sunday, Dec. 8th at 10:30am in the SMC Showroom. I will be going over the details of our trip, answering questions and collecting the remaining balance from each student.

Christmas Caroling Wednesday, Dec. 18th from 6-8pm. Meet at the SMC.

We will be in the Campbell Co. area spreading Christmas cheer.

Sunday Night Electives—Winter Semester 6-7:30pm Sunday, Jan. 12th is the kick-off for the Winter semester of Sunday Night Electives. We have three great classes to begin signing up for this week. “Daniel-

Spiritual Living in a Secular World-Pt. 1” by David Michon, “Standing Tall When Tempted” by Tanner Petty, and “Using your God-Given SHAPE” by Pastor Brian.

Breana Parker and the Missions Serve Team have spearheaded a campaign since October challenging students to bring in school supplies to send to a ministry in Haiti.

The students have brought in about 6 cases of supplies from paper and pencils to rulers and note cards. I am so impressed with the vision and effort of our Missions Team but also with the compassionate response from so many of our students. The campaign will conclude Wednesday, Dec. 4th but we will still be collecting money to pay for the shipping of all of these items. We are asking everyone to bring $1 to defray the cost.

S E R V I C E P R O J E C T S

Following our New Believer’s Class in October a number of the students who participated stated that they wanted further ongoing support and direction for their spiritual journey. As a result I have laid out a plan and challenge to our leaders to commit to discipling a willing student for a certain time period with the purpose of helping them move toward

spiritual maturity. There are five specific goals and several commitments that we are striving to achieve and develop in your student.

To date, ten students have requested a mentor and I still have seven additional leaders willing to disciple a student. If your student is interested in a serious, one-on-one,

spiritual discipleship challenge then please encourage them to talk with Pastor Brian to arrange for a pairing with one of our amazing volunteers.

The leaders of the middle school ask that parents join us in the fol-lowing prayer requests for our ministry:

1. Overall health in the ministry.

2. Protection of Jeshua, Megan, and baby Elena.

3. Spiritual growth of our students.

4. Salvations of the lost.

5. Conviction of our students to take seriously their spiritual growth and sharing the Gospel with lost friends.

6. Rendering ineffective the plans of Satan to harm this ministry.

7. Joy and strength to fill the hearts of leaders and students.

Wednesday, December 19th, we will be Christmas caroling to some of our senior adults and shut ins. Caroling will be new for many of our students, but it will also be incredibly fun and rewarding. Many of those whom we will visit will be overjoyed to hear our stu-dents share with them in song.

After we finish singing, we will come back to the Student Minis-tries Center to announce and award the class who raised the most money for the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering with a special treat. The event is from 6-8pm, so please don’t be late. We look forward to seeing you all there!

The 8th grade boys are meeting after church on Sunday, December 8th for an afternoon of snow tubing at Liberty University’s Snowflex. The event will be from 12:30-4:00. They will meet at the SMC immedi-ately following church and after having a fun filled day of flying down the mountain they will be dropped off at the SMC.

Other than the fun and excitement, the best part about the event is that it is totally free! In fact, even lunch will be provided at no cost!

Their leaders, Tyler Andrick and Joe Layton, are using this event to invest their lives into our kids. All 8th grade boys are invited so do not miss out!

My favorite time of the year is here. Yes, it is Christmas. I always love this season and it is so much fun to be around chil-dren as their excitement builds towards that special day.

The next few weeks are going to be busy with activities for our chil-dren and of course that means busy for the parents as well. The big event in December is our children’s musical, which is sched-uled for Dec. 15. Our choir is working hard on the mu-sical, so make sure you make plans to be here.

Several of our dif-ferent ministry areas will be having Christmas par-ties over the next few weeks. The children’s Sun-

day School teachers will be celebrating together on December 21 at 5:00 PM at the student center. We always have a great time at this get together. On De-cember 13 our 5th and 6th graders will be getting together at the main wel-come center for our annual Christmas party. The theme this year is ugly Christmas sweater, so we are looking forward to see-ing what some of the kids will be wearing. We will have some great food, play games, and exchange sneaky Santa gifts. The exchanging of gifts is al-ways the highlight of the evening.

Awana clubs will be having a special night to celebrate Christmas. De-

cember 18 is the night each club will have special activi-ties to celebrate the holi-days. Please note we will not have Awana on December 25. We will finish out the month with a Christmas party in 252 on December 29.

As you can see there is a lot going on, but my chal-lenge to all of us is let’s not forget what Christmas is all about. Let’s keep Jesus first and celebrate His birth throughout the season. May God bless you and give you a wonderful Christmas.

Merry Christmas

As we do every year, our children’s ministry will be putting on a Christmas musi-cal. This year they are doing one called “We Three Spies”. The children will be performing on December 15 at 6:00 PM. This is always a great opportunity to invite friends and loved ones to

church as many will come to see children perform. Let me thank Wendy Ames and her staff of volunteers for doing such an outstanding job getting the children ready. They have done a great job with the 90 plus children in the choir and I am looking forward to the

program. If you have a child in the choir, please make sure they attend the last few prac-tices. Make plans to join us as we cele-brate the birth of our Savior.

welcome center here at church. We will meet at 6:00 PM and finish at 9:00 PM. At the party we will eat supper together. We will also be playing games and exchanging sneaky Santa gifts. We will also have a time of prayer and devotion. The cost of the activity is $7.00 to help cover the cost of the food and the prizes for the games. The kids are welcome to bring friends.

Make plans to join us for these activities and each Sunday in the 56 Spot for Church 56.

I wanted to formally announce the weeks of summer camp and VBS for 2014. The week of VBS will be July 14-18, which is a week later than the last few years. We wanted to move away from the July 4th weekend when so many people are on vacation. This year our theme is Jungle Safari.

Summer camp is always the biggest week of the summer for us. This year our week of camp is August 4-9. We will be going back to Oak Hill, but the camp raised their rates. Let me encourage you to start putting aside money now for this week. We will have

a kick-off and theme announcement on January 12.

It has almost been three years now since we switched our Super Sunday program over to 252. It has been a great change and I exited at how the kids are learning and focusing in on one virtue each month. If you are not plugged into a ministry and would like to join our team, please let me know. We would love to have you join us. We need about 5 new volunteers to be fully staffed.

This year we will have a Christ-mas party in 252 on December 29 for our first through fourth graders.

One of the most exciting minis-tries at Hyland Heights is Church 56. The past few weeks we have seen steady growth in this program. We have had a lot of new visitors and several of the kids are bringing their friends to check us out. I appreciate Steve Lipka leading this group. If you are looking for a place to serve we would love to have you join us on Sundays or for some of our special activities.

A huge thank you goes out to all who participated in sending care packages to military mem-bers in our church family. We put together 18 boxes filled with goodies for the following service members: James Bigham, Thom Breland, Anna Cambre, Devin

Dormer, James Lawrie, Aaron Meany, Joey and Jonathan Montenegro, An-drew Morgan, Mark Saye, Keith Vaughn, and Hunter Witt. Please keep these and their families in your prayers. November 10th we took time to honor our veterans during church ser-vices. We want to express our sincere gratitude to all the men and women who have served and are serving in our Armed Forces. Your commitment is valued and your sacrifice is appreciated beyond what our words can ad-equately express. The Military Ministry will not be meeting during the month of Decem-ber. Our next meeting will be Thursday, January 2, at 7pm. We meet on the main campus in Room A109 and invite you to come join us. All patriots are welcome to attend - military service is not a requirement to participate.

December 15th - Avante Christmas caroling and visiting. Please consider this event even if you are shy and you do not sing. We need smiling faces :) we will make up some care packages to share. Maybe in a stocking.

December 19th - at 6:00 PM - Caroling-Community and a Nursing home possibly.

2014 is around the corner. Our meeting times will be: The First Friday and the Third Thursday of each month. The first Friday will be a scheduled activity. We will look at bowling, movies, and some trips. Some examples will be the Sight and Sound Theater, a trip to Abington, etc. We will meet the third Thursday of every month for Bible study and guest speakers at times. If you have anything to share or talent, let me know.

Stephanie Rhodes

Lari and Nolan Squier The concept of contentment

is almost unimaginable in our mod-ern-day society. We are constantly bombarded with offers to buy, bor-row and obtain. Every commercial on television challenges us to see ourselves enhanced by new prod-ucts and services. Yet, once we ob-tain those things we find that we are only satisfied for a short time.

The Bible speaks about contentment. Jesus said that our ba-sic necessities will be provided by God if we first choose to seek the advancement of God’s kingdom. He even contrasted the life of the Gentile with the believer. He said that the Gentile is one that seeks the things of this life while having no interest in the King-dom of God. Jesus challenges believers to seek God’s kingdom and trust that God will meet his needs in the process. The Apostle Paul comments on contentment in I Timothy 6. There he says that contentment with godly living is gain. Paul even defines contentment as simple food and clothing. He goes on to warn us that the rich of this world run the risk of being hurt by a lack of contentment. In some instances they are overcome by foolish and hurtful desires that have even lead some of them to abandon the faith. The battle for us involves living in a culture that is material-istic and not easily satiated. We are constantly tempted to gain something else that will fulfill our desires. Yet, the more we give in to the desire to fulfill the need the greater the need grows and the more it requires to be satisfied again. Our best bet is to follow the words of Paul and settle for the basics of life. Take a moment to examine your own life. Do you find your-self striving to meet your own needs or do find God as your sup-plier? Is contentment something you are even considering or do you find that there is always one more thing you need to buy or gain to feel complete? Last, have you come to the conclusion that the desire to have is never satisfied and only intensifies as it is fed?

The goal of parenting is not merely surviving, but thriving. Parenting Matters is an intensely practi-cal ten-week DVD course designed to give you the tools necessary to parent effectively & proactively. Each lesson builds upon the truths found in the Word of God regarding the nurturing of character healthy children. We explore Biblical theory of par-enting & practical application adaptable to differ-

ent families & family situations.

Together we will learn the nine practices necessary for proactive parenting in today’s permissive world.

Lessons incLude: - the importance of modeling proactive behavior - elevating virtues above feelings - building moral muscle - stocking the shelves in your child’s moral mart - the responsibility tree . . . . and much much more.

Our goal is not simply well behaved, outwardly compliant children, but rather a generation of character healthy leaders prepared to impact their world for Christ. Parenting Matters will provide you the confidence to make wise and thoughtful parenting decisions without being blown and tossed by worldly and destructive philosophies.

Jericho minisTries Toy driVeAfter December 12th, we will be collecting for the Jericho Ministry which helps reach kids in downtown Lynchburg.

In October our guest speaker was Debby Weiser, and she spoke on “Choosing to be Thankful”. What a great reminder that our cir-cumstances do not have to dictate our attitudes. Also, we played our rendition of “Let’s Make a Deal” and Clayton Noel, one of the contes-tants, walked away with a camouflaged bandana. Now he’s ready to be a guest on Duck Dynasty! In November, our guest speaker was Jean Harris. She volunteers with the Red Cross and shared great information on being prepared for disasters. We had a drawing and gave away two emergency kits.A group of twenty-two senior adults enjoyed an evening with the Gaither Vocal Band. The music was wonderful and Mark Lowry was hilarious, as usual. The evening was totally delightful. On the way home, the Candler’s Mountain view of Lynchburg was heavenly. There are many seniors in our community who are not active in a church, and the Young at Heart gathering is a great place to get plugged in. So invite them to come and join us. Remember the early church in Acts 2? They “devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer”. Let’s do likewise.
