our presentation at generative art 2011
DESCRIPTION
We carried out the biggest Internet survey on the aesthetic influence of the golden ratio so far.Our 660 subjects from all around the world did not know what this was all about. It's time to tell them and thank them.TRANSCRIPT

Our objective
Perform an Internet surveyto check whether
abstract designs based on the golden ratio are preferred
by our subjects
![Page 3: Our presentation at Generative Art 2011](https://reader033.vdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022060203/559dfa5d1a28ab5f468b46ff/html5/thumbnails/3.jpg)

Shortcoming
The compared paintings are different on so many
levels, we cannot attribute the choice on the sole
golden ration factor
![Page 6: Our presentation at Generative Art 2011](https://reader033.vdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022060203/559dfa5d1a28ab5f468b46ff/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)

Shortcoming
The use of cardboard rectangles
with different ratios hardly constitutes
an aesthetic experience
![Page 9: Our presentation at Generative Art 2011](https://reader033.vdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022060203/559dfa5d1a28ab5f468b46ff/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)

Subjects of second test:57 students
of a technical university

We wanted more
More subjects from different contexts
More aesthetic experience than isolated rectangles
but without too many other interfering factors
![Page 11: Our presentation at Generative Art 2011](https://reader033.vdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022060203/559dfa5d1a28ab5f468b46ff/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
To have more subjects

with invitations spread out by means of email and
social networks

Results
By far the biggest survey on the golden ratio
ever performed

Interpreting the results
Although we tried to leave out any other
aesthetic factor than the rectangle ratio
there seem to be at least two interfering issues
![Page 24: Our presentation at Generative Art 2011](https://reader033.vdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022060203/559dfa5d1a28ab5f468b46ff/html5/thumbnails/24.jpg)
Space-filling [S]
Subjects prefer compositions that fill the
available space in a better way: not too empty,
not overcrowded
![Page 25: Our presentation at Generative Art 2011](https://reader033.vdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022060203/559dfa5d1a28ab5f468b46ff/html5/thumbnails/25.jpg)
Ergonomics [R]
As most of the subjects are right-handed
(statistics says 87% of population)
when undecided there is a tendency to click on the right
![Page 26: Our presentation at Generative Art 2011](https://reader033.vdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022060203/559dfa5d1a28ab5f468b46ff/html5/thumbnails/26.jpg)
Interpreting the results
A combination of these two factors seems to offer
an explanation of the results
![Page 27: Our presentation at Generative Art 2011](https://reader033.vdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022060203/559dfa5d1a28ab5f468b46ff/html5/thumbnails/27.jpg)

Conclusions
Instead of providing indications on the golden ratio, our test yielded two more hypotheses to test,
about composition and about ergonomy
![Page 31: Our presentation at Generative Art 2011](https://reader033.vdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022060203/559dfa5d1a28ab5f468b46ff/html5/thumbnails/31.jpg)
Challenge
To design a test that isolates
one of several factors that affect
our aesthetic experience
![Page 32: Our presentation at Generative Art 2011](https://reader033.vdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022060203/559dfa5d1a28ab5f468b46ff/html5/thumbnails/32.jpg)
