Higher Things Newsletter Report:The Higher Things conference tookplace July 30 - August 2, in Irvine,California. Twenty-one youth from OSL4:12 and four chaperones flew fromHouston to Concordia University -Irvine, to join with 400 Lutheran youthfrom all over the United States.
The conference theme was “Concordia”which is Latin for “with one heart.” Thesessions and Bible studies focused onbeing unified around the confession ofJesus as our Lord and Savior and that
true concord isn’t just a feeling of being onebut always being centered around theconfession of Christ and Him crucified. Welearned about defending our faith and how tostand up against the influences of the world.
Before the conference began, we were able tospend a day exploring Los Angeles andHollywood, as well as enjoying time atHuntington Beach. The experience was full offun and learning for everyone.
The youth group would like to thank thecongregation for their continued support ofthis type of special event.

Dear Brothers & Sisters in Christ:We continue our journey through the Book of Concord with our look at the three ecumenical creeds(Apostles’, Nicene, and Athanasian), this time focusing on the Athanasian.Martin Luther is credited with having said of the Athanasian Creed: “I doubt whether the NewTestament church has a more important document since the Apostolic Age.” However, in our day, theAthanasian Creed is not nearly as well-known as it was in Luther’s day.The Athanasian Creed is like the Apostles’ in that its author is unknown. It was written later than theNicene Creed, appearing in its complete form near the end of the eighth century, and is attributed toAthanasius (the 4th Century bishop of Alexandria) who was a staunch defender of the deity of Christ and the Trinity – thetwo main subjects of this creed.The Athanasian Creed is an excellent summary of the decisions of the first four ecumenical councils (Nicaea – 325,Constantinople – 381, Ephesus – 431, and Chalcedon – 451) against various and many false teachings concerning thefundamental teachings of Scripture.In the years 400-800 A.D. false teachers arose who began to deny the doctrine of the Trinity and the person and work ofJesus Christ. For this reason, the Athanasian Creed deals with the most fundamental truths of the Trinity, the Deity ofChrist, and His redeeming work. The creed confesses what must be confessed, and yet leaves the Trinity a mystery sincethere is nothing on earth that the Triune nature of God can be compared to.This confession consists of two distinct parts: The first sets forth in great detail the teaching of the Trinity. It goes beyondthe Apostles’ and Nicene Creeds which do not state the doctrine of the Trinity explicitly, but by implication. The secondpart contains a short and clear statement concerning the doctrine of the person of Christ, teaching the proper relationbetween the divine and human nature of Christ.Because of the length of this creed it is not commonly recited in the Church during public worship, except on special festivaldays, namely, Trinity Sunday. This has the effect of many people not being as familiar with the creed, and therefore oftentimes confused at some of the phrases or words used in it. So that there is no confusion, we should take note of a few things:• The expression “catholic faith” does not refer to membership in the Roman Catholic Church, but of those who are united
in the “universal Christian faith” and members of the Holy Christian Church. “Catholic” is the Latin word for “universal.”• The term “uncreate” reminds us that all three persons of the Holy Trinity (Father, Son and Holy Spirit) are equal and
without beginning or end. The Son was not “created” by the Father, nor was the Holy Spirit “created” by the Father andthe Son. All three persons have existed from eternity as one united equal God.
• The creed also goes into detail (“perfect God and perfect man”; “one altogether; not by confusion of substance but byunity of Person.”) to show that Jesus Christ was at once fully God and fully man. Jesus was not half God and half man,but as incomprehensible as it seems both immortal and mortal at the same time.
• Whenever works are spoken of in connection with the judgment it is good to remember:○ Good Works are those things done by believers in the true fear and love of God – for Jesus’ sake. The writer to the
Hebrews writes: “Without faith it is impossible to please Him.” (Hebrews 11:6a)○ These will stand as evidence of true faith in Christ, which alone saves. James declares: “So also faith by itself, if it
does not have works, is dead.” (James 2:17)In contrast to the peaceful tone of the Apostles’ and Nicene Creeds, the Athanasian Creed begins and ends with the strongcondemnation: “This is the catholic faith; which except a man believe faithfully and firmly, he cannot be saved.” While somemay oppose this harsh wording, the same is taught in Scripture: Jesus said, “I told you that you would die in your sins; forunless you believe that I am He you will die in your sins,” (John 8:24; cf. Acts 4:12, Mark 16:15-16). This creed should bringus great comfort, as it speaks clearly about our God and His plan for our salvation. Its clearness and boldness are refreshingin this age of doctrinal confusion. This is no wishy-washy confession. It states what the Scriptures teach – there is no Godbut the Lord revealed in the Scriptures, and there is no salvation outside of the name of Jesus Christ. All who deny thistruth, deny the Truth; and all who deny the Truth forfeit salvation. So, let us not be ashamed of God’s Word, and continueto proclaim both the Law and Gospel of Scripture to today’s world!In Christ’s Service and Yours,Pastor Krieg

I Will Sing of Steadfast Love and Justice;
To You, O Lord, I Will Make Music.
Psalm 101:1
It’s that time again to begin a new season of making music. There is room for anyone who wishes to be part ofthis ministry. There are a variety of choirs and groups to choose from and we are always looking for newmembers.
The Music Ministry officially begins on Thursday, September 5th.
Carillon Ringers: This is our handbell choir. We meet in the choir loft at 6:15 pm. Do you need to be able
to read music? No.
Do you need to be able to play an instrument? No.
Do you need to know your right hand from your left? Yes.
Bells take some time to get used to, but there is plenty of help. This group plays on allmajor Feast Days and periodically throughout the year. This group plays from Septemberthrough Ascension.
Jubilate Choir: This is our mixed adult Choir. We meet in the choir loft at 7:00 pm.
No prior musical knowledge is necessary and we will teach you to sing.
“I don’t have a strong voice.” Add your voice to others.
“I can’t sing.” No one is going to ask you to sing a solo.
“I don’t know how to sing.” That’s why we have rehearsal every week. We learn together.
This group sings twice a month, and at all major Feast Days, and goes from Septemberthrough our Patriotic Service.
Laudate Choir: This is our women’s choir. Note: This group will begin on SUNDAY, September 8th. Ifyou want to sing, but can’t make an evening rehearsal or can’t commit to the large amountof singing that the Jubilate Choir does, this group is for you.
Laudate practices the 2nd and 4th Sunday after Bible Class in the school music room forabout 30 minutes and sings about once every other month.
Cantate: This is our chamber group. If you play a string or woodwind instrument, we would loveto have you join us. We rehearse and play once a month and rehearse after Bible Class inthe church music room.
If you should have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to stop me or any member of our groups.We would be more than happy to answer any questions.

Dearest family in Christ:
We cannot even begin to tell you how grateful we arefor each and every one of you! Over the past severalmonths, you’ve lifted our daughter and family in yourthoughts and prayers. You have cooked us warm meals.You have sent us words of encouragement. You haveblessed us in so many different ways, while we travelthis journey with Acelynn. Every kind thought andgesture has not gone unnoticed and has truly touchedour hearts. Especially, the anonymous angels in ourcongregation, who were helping where needed themost, when no one was looking.
We could not be more elated to have our healthy girlback and this surgery behind her, and Acelynn couldnot be more excited to return to school with all of herfriends and teachers that she loves so dearly. It’smoments like this where God rejoices in our acts of loveand kindness towards one another, and we will certainlystrive to lead by your example in returning the samelove and generosity you’ve shown to us.
With grateful hearts,AJ, Stephanie, Acelynn & Aubrey Akhtar

I will sing of steadfast love and justice;
