The Day of PentecostOn this day, the fiftieth day of Easter, the Day of Pentecost, the church gathers to celebrate the ongoing life of the Holy Spirit who is its breath, vitality, and inspi-ration. We remember the day the church was born, when the tongues of fire rested on the disciples, and they began to preach the good news to all who could hear in their own language. We remember and we celebrate that this same Spirit is with us now, enlivening us and sending us forth to spread the Gospel.

First Lesson Acts 2: 1-21 New Revised Standard Version

Pentecost was a Jewish harvest festival that marked the fiftieth day after Passover. Luke portrays the Holy Spirit being poured out upon the disciples before the gathered and aston-ished people assembled in Jerusalem for the festival. Filled with the Spirit, the disciples were able to witness to the power of Christ's resurrection.

1 When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. 2 And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. 3 Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. 4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability.

Pastor Bob: Do you believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God?

Confirmands: I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead.

Pastor Bob: Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit?
