Brief Order For Confessionand ForgivenessPlease remain standing

Pastor: In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

All: Amen

Pastor: In Christ's dying and rising, we are reborn; we are no longer dead in our sin. Let us return to the shepherd and guardian of our souls, confessing our sin.

If you are able, please kneel -- or you may be seated

Pastor: Almighty God . . .

All: We confess before you our preference for things that pass away, our silence in the face of injustice, our reluctance to accept the freedom of forgive-ness. Make us whole again; renew in us the grace of baptism; and set our minds on the things that are above.

Please remain kneeling

Pastor: God calls us to seek good and to turn away from evil. To those who believe in Jesus Christ, God grants forgiveness of sin, strength in weakness, and the promise of eternal salvation.

All: Amen

Opening Hymnplease stand if you are able

1. O day full of grace that now we seeAppearing on earth's horizon,Bring light from our God that we may beReplete in his joy this season.God, shine for us now in this dark place;Your name on our hearts emblazon.

2. For Christ bore our sins, and not his own,When he on the cross was hanging; And then he arose and moved the stone, That, we, unto him belonging,Might join with angelic hosts to raiseOur voices in endless singing.

3. God came to us then at Pentecost,His Spirit new life revealing,That we might no more from him be lost,All darkness for us dispelling. His flame will the mark of sin effaceAnd bring to us all his healing.

4. When we on that final journey goThat Christ is for us preparing,We'll gather in song, our hearts aglow,All joy of the heavens sharing,And walk in the light of God's own place,With angels his name adoring.

Pastor: The grace of our Lord, Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit, be with you all.

All: And also with you.

Pastor: Let us pray . . . O God, on this day you open the hearts of your faithful people by send-ing into us your Holy Spirit. Direct us by the light of that Spirit, that we may have a right judgment in all things and rejoice at all times in your peace, through Jesus Christ, your Son and our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

All: Amen

Psalm Psalm 104: 24-34, 35b

Lector: O LORD, how manifold are your works! In wisdom you have made them all; the earth is full of your creatures.

All: Yonder is the sea, great and wide, creeping things innumerable are there, living things both small and great.

Lector: There go the ships, and Leviathan that you formed to sport in it.

All: These all look to you to give them their food in due season;

Lector: when you give to them, they gather it up; when you open your hand, they are filled with good things.

All: When you hide your face, they are dis-mayed; when you take away their breath, they die and return to their dust.

Lector: When you send forth your spirit, they are

created; and you renew the face of the ground.

All: May the glory of the LORD endure forever; may the LORD rejoice in his works

Lector: who looks on the earth and it trembles, who touches the mountains and they smoke.

All: I will sing to the LORD as long as I live; I will sing praise to my God while I have being.

Lector: May my meditation be pleasing to him, for I rejoice in the LORD.

All: Bless the LORD, O my soul. Praise the LORD!

First Lesson Acts 2: 1-21 New Revised Standard Version

Pentecost was a Jewish harvest festival that marked the fiftieth day after Passover. Luke portrays the Holy Spirit being poured out upon the disciples before the gathered and aston-ished people assembled in Jerusalem for the festival. Filled with the Spirit, the disciples were able to witness to the power of Christ's resurrection.

1 When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. 2 And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. 3 Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. 4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability.

5 Now there were devout Jews from every nation un-der heaven living in Jerusalem. 6 And at this sound the crowd gathered and was bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in the native language of each. 7 Amazed and astonished, they asked, “Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? 8 And how is it that we hear, each of us, in our own native language? 9 Parthians, Medes, Elamites, and resi-dents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, 11 Cretans and Arabs—in our own languages we hear them speaking about God’s deeds of power.” 12 All were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, “What does this mean?” 13 But others sneered and said, “They are filled with new wine.”

14 But Peter, standing with the eleven, raised his voice and addressed them, “Men of Judea and all who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and listen to what I say. 15 Indeed, these are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is only nine o’clock in the morning. 16 No, this is what was spoken through the prophet Joel: 17 ‘In the last days it will be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams. 18 Even upon my slaves, both men and women, in those days I will pour out my Spirit; and they shall prophesy. 19 And I will show portents in the heaven above and signs on the earth below, blood, and fire, and smoky mist. 20 The sun shall be turned to darkness and the moon to blood, before the coming of the Lord’s great and glorious day. 21 Then everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.’

Reading of the Gospel Lesson John 15:26-27New Revised Standard Version

26 “When the Advocate comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who comes from the Father, he will testify on my behalf. 27 You also are to testify because you have been with me from the beginning.

Pastor: This is the Gospel of the Lord. All: Thanks be to God.

Pastor Bob: Do you believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God?

Confirmands: I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead.

Pastor Bob: Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit?

Confirmands: I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen

Pastor addresses those making affirmation

Pastor Bob: You have made public profession of your faith. Do you intend to continue in the covenant God made with you in Holy Baptism:

-to live among God’s faithful people, -to hear his Word and share in his supper, -to proclaim the good news of God in Christ

through word and deed, -to serve all people, following the example of

our Lord Jesus, -and to strive for justice and peace in all the

earth?

Each making affirmation answers in turn:

I do, and I ask God to help and guide me.

those making affirmation will please kneel at the communion rail

Pastor Bob: Let us pray. . . Gracious Lord, through water and the Spirit you have made these young people your own. You forgave them all their sins and brought them to newness of life. Continue to strengthen them with the Holy Spirit, and daily increase in them your gifts of grace; the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord, the spirit of joy in your presence; through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord.

Confirmands: Amen6

The Service of Confirmation11:30 Service Only

Pastor Bob: The following persons have been instruct-ed in the Christian faith and desire to make public affirmation of their baptism

Katera DobsonTia Leung

Pastor Bob: Dear friends, we rejoice that you now desire to make public profession of your faith and assume greater responsibility in the life of our Christian community and its mission in the world.

Brothers and sisters in Christ: In Holy Baptism our Lord Jesus Christ received you and made you members of his church. In the community of God's people, you have learned from God's Word God's loving purpose for you and for all creation. You have been nourished at God's holy table and called to be a witness to the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

(addresses the confirmands) Now, therefore I ask you to profess your faith in

Christ Jesus, reject sin, and confess the faith of the Church, the faith in which we baptize.

Do you renounce all the forces of evil, the devil, and all his empty promises?

Confirmands: I do.

Pastor Bob: Do you believe in God the Father?

Confirmands: I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

Eucharistic Prayer

Pastor: Holy God, Breath of life and fire of love; with a mighty wind you brought creation into being, and by a pillar of fire you led your people into freedom. In the name of Jesus, you now gather all people into your promised redemption.

All: Amen, Come Lord Jesus.

Pastor: In the night in which he was betrayed our Lord Jesus took bread and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples saying: Take and eat; this is my body given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.

Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks,

and gave it for all to drink saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me.

And so, in remembrance of these your mighty acts in Jesus Christ, we offer ourselves in praise and thanksgiving, in union with Christ's offering for us.

Send now your Holy Spirit upon us and this meal. Anoint us with your gifts of faith, hope and love, that, with thankful hearts, we may be witnesses to your Son.

All: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread;and forgive us our trespasses,as we forgive those who trespass against us;and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen

Pastor: Come, all has been prepared; eat and drink with delight, and be satisfied.

The Perfect church . . . for those who aren’t !

This year marks our 95th year of ministry in Queens. Orga-nized in 1923, Our Saviour Lutheran Church includes people from 26 nations of origin, gathered together to celebrate in Word and Sacrament the Gospel of Jesus Christ and to root our hope in the power of the Good News.

As a people who have been touched by God’s love in Jesus Christ, we respond by giving our lives in friendship and service.

We are: A Joyful people ! A Diverse people ! Gathered for worship ! Scattered for ministry !Welcome !
