Shoulder Ride

Those who reach the highest are those who sit on another’s shoulders. “Self-made” men and women are unaware of the people who have carried them, or ignore those who have helped them.

When my dad died in January, I lost the teacher who let me ride on his shoulders to learn about Faith. My mom has carried me and taught me about Love. Others who have carried me into new insight include: Carol Tuntland and her team for Worship, Jim Johnson for Encouragement, Dave Housholder for Communication, Greg Seeba for Service, Lyla Prindle for Thankfulness, Tom Reimers for Leadership, and Bruce Prewer for Liturgy.

I grew up hating liturgy, so it is surprising to include it in this list. However, a couple years ago I discovered Bruce Prewer, a Tasmanian and Australian pastor, online. He died last September, and I have never met him, but he continually encourages and surprises me with his writing for worship services. If you like a Confession, Affirmation of Faith or Prayer that we use, there is a good chance that I have borrowed it from him—such as our Affirmation of Faith in April. As we walk through Lent and Holy Week, his Palm Sunday poem encourages me, and I offer it to you:

“Only One” by Bruce Prewer (www.bruceprewer.com)

When I read that Bruce Prewer had gone home to Jesus, I wrote to his family to say thank you. Whose shoulders have you ridden on? Who can you say “thank you” to during Lent?

Come ride the strongest shoulders in the universe with us as we worship on Sundays, Lenten Wednesdays, Maundy Thursday and Good Friday: “About Benjamin he said: ‘Let the beloved of the Lord rest secure in him, for he shields him all day long, and the one the Lord loves rests between his shoulders’” (Deuteronomy 33:12). Even though the verse sounds like it is about me, there are room on God’s shoulders for you! One big question for you: Who are you bringing to Easter?

Only one king comes to our town not in a Rolls Royce or BMW with police bikes all around, but bareback on a runt of a donkey, like a comedian, feet brushing the ground. Only one high priest comes to our church not led by bishops and cardinals rich-robed with religious sentiment, but led by a grubby gang of street kids screaming their heads off with merriment.

Only one God comes down our street not surrounded by holy angels or shining like the sun at noon, but with tears running down his cheeks for those who play the devil’s tune. Only one true-man comes along this way never looking to be served or honoured with public praise, but to serve and give his life as a ransom for rebels and strays.

Maundy Thursday/Good Friday Prayer Vigil Join us in devoting time in prayer from 5:00 p.m. on Maundy Thursday

to 7:00 p.m. on Good Friday. There are opportunities to come and pray in the chapel, and also opportunities for you to pray from your own home. There will be a sign up sheet on the bulletin board by the water fountain.

Help us fill every hour in prayer! Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances;

for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

“Then the fire of the Lord fell and consumed the burnt offering and the wood and the stones and the dust and licked up the water in the trench.” 1 Kings 18:38

Spring is just around the corner! Lightning strikes the United States 25 million times a year. Lightning kills on average 47 people a year in the United States and injures hundreds more. Lightning carries a temperature of 50,000 degrees. Remember, no

place outside is safe when thunderstorms are near. If you hear thunder, lightning is close enough to strike you. When you hear thunder, immediately move to a safe shelter. Stay off corded phones, computers and other electrical equipment. Avoid plumbing, including sinks, baths and faucets. Stay away from windows, doors and stay off porches. Do not lie on concrete floors and do not

lean against concrete walls. These tips are to help you stay safe during thunderstorms. Keep yourself safe and may the good Lord watch over you and keep you! Wellness Committee

Praise Band If you have a passion for making music in praise of our Lord, and will be in high school or college

next fall, prayerfully consider becoming a member of the “Behind the Cross” Praise Band! The Praise Band assists in leading worship the fourth Sunday of the month, August – May.

Please contact Director Jo Beane or the church office for more information.

Easter Lily Would you like to sponsor an Easter lily to adorn our sanctuary on Easter morning? The cost is $15 each. You may take your lily after the 9:00 a.m. Easter

Sunday Worship service. Look for the sign-up sheet on the bulletin board above the water fountain or

contact the church office. Thank you!

Thank You Thank you to the many faithful volunteers

and staff who put in “extra time” during the Lenten and Easter services and Lenten suppers and to those who

sponsored Easter lilies. Your time, dedication, and generosity are greatly appreciated!

Thank You from the South Africa Mission Team We are so grateful for our family, friends, church family and prayer partners for all your support, donations, gifts and prayers. We could not have had a successful mission trip without you. We were able to be a part of the feeding program, eye glass distribution clinics, and Days for Girls hygiene kit distribution. We prayed and worshiped with the people of South Africa. We learned from them and grew in our spiritual life. What a gift from God!! We were amazed at the changes that have been made in South Africa. Mountain View church and school is supported by Blessman International and there are now 60 youth that attend church services and have come to know Christ. They also have new Enviro Loo toilets. The farming industry has also grown to feed the children and the surplus is sold and used for income. The Blessman’s teach a child to fish agriculture program training started this past week training ten teachers and students from 2 schools. They will help them plant gardens which will add 5,000 children being fed. That will bring the total to 20,000 that are fed daily. Many fresh water wells have been dug. The goal is for 10 more wells to be dug this year. They are hoping for donations to be able to purchase their own drilling rig which will save thousands of dollars, as they now have to hire the drilling. Blessman has started their second sewing center at Del Cramer and by May 1st they are hoping to begin baking bread for the kids and selling baked goods for income. God has truly blessed the mission work in South Africa and we are so grateful to have been a small part of God’s plan and be able to share God’s love and His Word. Sincerely, South Africa Mission Team

Help us fill every hour in prayer! Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances;

for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.
